 Starlux starts Airbus A350 operations

Starlux Airlines (JX, Taipei Taoyuan) has announced the start of A350-900 revenue flights on January 20, 2023. The airline's pair of Airbus widebodies will begin flying between Taipei and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Taipei and Macau International on that date, with the aircraft also operating flights to Tokyo Narita and Los Angeles International over the next few months.

The airline, which already has a fleet of A321-200NX and A330-900Ns flying around Southeast and Northeast Asia, began operations in January 2020. It took delivery of its first A350-900 - B-58501 (msn 480) - on October 26, 2022, and received its second on January 5 - B-58502 (msn 557). ch-aviation fleets ownership data indicates both planes are company owned.

According to releases on Starlux's social media, Starlux's twice daily roundtrip flights between Taipei and Bangkok will switch from A330-900Ns to A350-900s on January 20. The daily A321-200NX roundtrip flight between Taipei and Macau is also switching over to the A350-900N on January 20 and going double daily from February 1, with the A350-900 operating both services.

According to ch-aviation schedules data, Starlux Airlines operates two roundtrip flights a day between Taipei and Tokyo Narita, one operated by an A330-900N and the other by the A321-200NX. From March 1, the A350-900 will take over the A330-900N operated service, JX800/801. Starlux also advises the A350-900 will operate its Taipei - Los Angeles International route which is due to begin sometime in April.

The airline has a further sixteen A350-900s on order. Two more are due later this year, four are scheduled to arrive next year, and the remaining ten through to 2027. Meanwhile, Starlux Airlines also resumed flights between Taipei and Cebu this week. The daily roundtrip flights are operated by an A321-200NX and restarted on January 17.

Delta increases A220-orders

On 18 January 2023, Delta Air Lines issued a statement in which they announced the airline had decided to excercise options on the Airbus A220 into a firm order. In total, Delta has added firm orders for twelve more A220-300s.

Last year, the airline also converted twelve A220-300 options into firm orders and has now ordered a total of 119 Airbus A220s; 45 A220-100s and 74 A220-300s. The new aircraft are planned for delivery in 2026 and 2027.

Delta Air Lines is Airbus' largest customer for the A220, of which it now has 45 A220-100s and fourteen A220-300s in service. The airline took delivery of its first A220 back in 2018.

Croatia Airlines leases A220s from ALC

In October 2022, Scramble reported that Croatia Airlines has selected the Airbus A220 as its aircraft to renew its fleet with. Since then, the airline has signed a firm order in November 2022 for six A220-300s with Airbus, but also said it would look to lease an additional nine A220s in order to replace the whole fleet and standardize on a single aircraft-type.

On 16 January 2023, Air Lease Corporation announced it has reached a lease-agreement with Croatia Airlines for the lease of six A220s, which will be two A220-100s and four A220-300s. ALC said the A220s would be delivered in 2024 and 2025. It's unclear if the airline is seeking leases for three more A220s or that this is it for now.

With this latest lease-deal, the airline has now secured orders and leases for a total of twelve Airbus A220s, of which two are the smallest version. Currently, Croatia Airlines is operating a fleet of thirteen aircraft consisting of five Airbus A319s, two A320s and six DHC-8-400s.

Alaska Airlines completes Airbus A320ceo phase-out

Alaska Airlines (AS, Seattle Tacoma Int'l) has completed the phase-out of all of its A320-200s inherited from Virgin America (San Francisco, CA) following that carrier's 2018 takeover.

The type has exited the active fleet as of January 9, 2023, just a few days behind the most recent schedule which foresaw an accelerated retirement by the end of 2022. The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Alaska Airlines operated 29 leased A320s in mid-2022 and began their retirement in July 2022. Just 12 remained in the fleet at the end of 2022, of which six operated their last flight on January 8 and the other six the day later.

The 29 Airbus aircraft are currently in storage at Victorville (17 units), Greensboro (nine), Lake City, Everett, and San Antonio Int'l (one each).

The airline plans to retire all DHC-8-Q400s operated by its Horizon Air (QX, Seattle Tacoma Int'l) subsidiary by the end of the current quarter, and all ten A321-200Ns (ordered by Virgin America, although six were delivered post-takeover directly to Alaska Airlines) by the end of the year. Alaska Air Group's long-term fleet plan focuses on B737NG/MAX for the mainline and E175s for Horizon Air.

SAS To Return An Airbus A330 And A320neo To Lessors

On Monday, SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) petitioned a United States bankruptcy court to allow it to return two aircraft to lessors. The airline sought US Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July last year, and Monday's filing is another step in bringing the airline back to financial health.

As reported by ch-aviation.com, SAS has sought permission to return two Airbus aircraft, an A330-300 registered LN-RKR (manufacturer serial number 1660) and an A320-200neo registered SE-ROH (MSN 9173). The airline petitioned the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York because the two aircraft were "now surplus to requirements."

To add some weight to the argument, Michael Cox, senior managing director of Seabury Securities LLC, said the two leases were at above-market rates, and the decision by the airline to reject them was "a sound business judgment." The filing noted that "The excess aircraft are no longer required in the debtors' restructured fleet," adding:

"Thus, requiring the debtors to retain the excess aircraft would impose unnecessary costs on the debtors' estates with little to no corresponding benefit. Accordingly, rejection of the leases constitutes a proper exercise of the debtor's business judgment as it will reduce costs for the debtors' estates. Therefore, the rejection of the leases should be approved."

The lessors have until January 23rd to file their reply, which will no doubt paint an entirely different picture of who will be out of pocket if the two aircraft are left at an airport to be picked up. The court's final decision is set to be handed down on February 1st.

Fleet data from ch-aviation.com shows that the Airbus A330 is 7.4 years old and on a financial lease from a Japanese special-purpose vehicle named JPA No. 137 Co Ltd. The A320neo is close to three years old and is on lease from AVIC International Leasing.

This week's filing also said that when SAS sought Chapter 11 protection, it operated a fleet of 100 aircraft, including 63 on operating leases, 15 subject to Japanese operating leases with a call option, two loan-financed and 20 aircraft owned by the airline. Current data shows that SAS is operating a fleet of 69 aircraft, with a further 61 wet-leased and 13 inactive.

Leaving the wet-leased and inactive aircraft aside, the operating fleet includes four Airbus A319s, 10 A320s, 32 A320neos, four A321s, three A321neos, six A330s and four A350s. SAS also has four Boeing 737-700s and two 737-800s. In September, the airline said it was rejecting ten leased aircraft, including three A320neos, one AA321, one 737-700, two A350s and three A330s.

Away from the bankruptcy court, SAS carried 1.47 million passengers in December, an increase of close to 50% compared to December 2021. The passenger load factor for December 2022 was 71.7%, significantly up from the 57.1% reported in December 2021. While the lawyers and accountants battle it out in Manhattan, SAS President and CEO Anko van der Werff said, "Continuing the positive trend observed during autumn, December traffic came in at 1.5 million passengers, an almost 50% increase compared to December 2021."

"We are concentrating on ramping up ahead of the expected busy summer season. During the month, we released our extended summer program, with 20 new routes and more than 5000 weekly flights to more than 100 destinations."

Lufthansa to reactive more Airbus A340-600s

According to AeroTelegraph, Lufthansa will activate more A340-600s to cope with the increased demand and to cover for the delayed deliveries of new aircraft. Five more A340s will return, taking the total number of A340-600s to ten by summer 2023.

The following aircraft are set to return to duty:

• D-AIHF (543), stored at Teruel since 14 April 2020
• D-AIHW (972), stored at Frankfurt since 18 August 2022
• D-AIHX (982), stored at Teruel since 5 May 2020
• D-AIHY (987), stored at Munich since 14 December 2022
• D-AIHZ (1005), in maintenance at Manila since 18 December 2022

The ten A340-600s will be split evenly between Frankfurt and Munich.

ITA Airways set to introduce first A320neo

On 4 January 2023, the first Airbus A320neo for ITA Airways arrived at Rome-Fiumicino. The aircraft, still registered OE-IDC (11201), arrived from Shannon where it received the airline's livery. It will be registered EI-INA and is set to enter service later in January.

In total, ITA Airways has secured orders and leases for at least 23 Airbus A320neos to join the fleet. This consists currently of four Airbus A220-300s, seventeen A319s, 31 A320-200s, eight A330-300s, and six A350-900s.
