Aegean Airlines to wet-lease two A320s

Aegean Airlines (A3, Athens) will wet-lease two A320-200s from Cyprus Airways (CY, Larnaca) under a long-term ACMI deal covering all of 2024. The first aircraft began operating for the Greek airline on December 19, 2023.

5B-DDQ (msn 4055) was ferried from Larnaca to Thessaloniki on December 18 and operated its first flight for Aegean Airlines to Prague Václav Havel the next day, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. The second aircraft, 5B-DDR (msn 3933), will begin operating for the Greek airline in March 2024.

Besides the two A320-200s, Cyprus Airways also operates two A220-300s. The airline is planning to add more A220, considering the type the foundation of its future fleet. The airline operates in a highly seasonal market that has been heavily affected by the drop in demand from/to Israel due to the war in Gaza, as Israel is a key international market for Cyprus.

"We are very happy and proud to take the next step in our strategic cooperation with Aegean. We already have an extensive codeshare agreement in place where we work closely to offer and optimise our joint products and services," Cyprus Airways' Chief Executive Paul Sies said.

In turn, Aegean Airlines operates twenty-eight A320-200s, sixteen A320-200Ns, five A321-200s, twelve A321-200NX, nine ATR72-600s, and a single DHC-8-100. The turboprops are placed on the AOC of Olympic Air.

Air India Takes Delivery of its First Airbus A350-900

On 23 December 2023, Air India unpacked a nice Christmas-present in the form of taking delivery of its first Airbus A350. The A350-900, registered VT-JRA (554) was welcomed with a traditional water salute at Delhi after completing its delivery flight from Toulouse-Blagnac.

The aircraft is the first of six A350-900s the airline will take delivery of until March 2024. These six A350-900s were originally destined for Aeroflot and the cabins have received slight modifications to reflect the Air India-brand. They will be outfitted with 28 Business Class, 24 Premium Economy, and 264 Economy Class seats. Air India will start deployment of its first A350 in the coming weeks, initially serving domestic and short international destinations in order for the crew to get familiarized with the type.

Originally, Air India ordered six A350-900s and 34 A350-1000s but recently announced a change to its order. It has now reconfigured its A350-order into orders for 20 A350-900s and 20 A350-1000s.

The delivery of its A350 marks the first step of the renewal and expansion process of Air India's widebody-fleet. Next to the Airbuses, this will also be done by its order of 20 Boeing B787-9s and ten B777-9s.

HiSky welcomes 1st Airbus A330

On 19 December 2023, HiSky Europe welcomed its first Airbus A330. The airline announced in September 2023 that it planned to expand the fleet with the type, and now it has taken delivery of A330-243 YR-KID (1138). The Airbus was previously flying passengers for Sichuan Airlines and has been retired by that airline in March 2022.

Next to utilizing the A330 for charters, HiSky is planning to launch direct Bucharest-New York (NY) as of 7 June 2024. It will fly the route four times a week, making it the only Romanian airline to fly the route.

HiSky Europe also operates four A320s, and two A321neos. Subsidiary HiSky from Moldavia has a single A319.

Sunclass welcomes 1st Airbus A321neo

On 20 December 2023, Airbus announced that Sunclass Airlines from Denmark took delivery of its first A321neo. The aircraft, A321-251NX OY-VKA (11690) is leased from Air Lease Corporation and was already ferried to Copenhagen from Hamburg-Finkenwerder on 13 December 2023.

Sunclass is planning to renew its current fleet of nine A321s with A321neos in the coming years. Next to this, the airline also has one A330-200, one A330-300, and two A330-900s in the fleet. The airline has two more A330-900s on order via Air Lease Corporation, which will be used to replace the older ones in the fleet.

By 2030, Sunclass aims to be an all-neo operator.

Transavia Airlines takes delivery of its first Airbus A321neo

Hamburg, 19 December 2023 – Dutch low-cost carrier Transavia Airlines, part of the Air France-KLM group, has taken delivery of its first A321neo on lease from Air Lease Corporation (NYSE: AL). The aircraft was delivered from Airbus’ Hamburg production facilities taking advantage of Airbus’ option for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on its delivery flight to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. With this new aircraft Transavia becomes a new Airbus operator of the type.

This first A321neo marks the beginning of Transavia Airlines’ transition to an all-Airbus latest-generation fleet. Due to its lower fuel consumption and emissions, the A321neo will play a key role in the airline group’s sustainable development goals.

The newly delivered A321neo for Transavia Airlines seats 232 passengers in a single class layout. The cabin features Airbus’ Airspace XL bins. The larger bins provide a 40% more stowage space than previous ones for a more relaxed boarding experience for passengers and cabin crew. In addition, USB-C ports are available for passengers at every seat, and the latest lighting system enhances the overall passenger experience.

The A321neo is the largest member of the Airbus A320neo Family, offering unmatched range and performance. Equipped with sharklets and powered by new generation CFM International LEAP-1A engines, the A321neo delivers a 50 per cent reduction in noise footprint and 20 per cent reduction in fuel burn and CO₂ emissions compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft. 

To date the A321neo has captured more than 5,600 orders received from over 100 customers across the globe.

easyJet orders a further 157 A320neo Family aircraft

Toulouse, 19 December 2023 - easyJet has confirmed a firm order for 157 additional A320neo Family aircraft following shareholder approval. The firm order comprises 56 A320neo and 101 A321neo aircraft and also includes the upsizing of an existing order for 35 A320neo into the larger A321neo. The agreement is part of easyJet’s fleet renewal and upgauging plan and is also bringing substantial sustainability improvements to its business.

Lufthansa Group orders additional 40 Airbus A220s

Toulouse, 19 December 2023 - Lufthansa Group’s Supervisory Board decided to place a firm order for an additional 40 A220-300s for its short and medium-haul fleet. The A220 has been in service with the Group since 2016, when SWISS put the first aircraft into scheduled service.

“With today's order for 40 additional Airbus A220s, we are continuing our unique partnership with Airbus,” said Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “Just a few months ago, as the largest airline customer, we received our 600th aircraft from Airbus, and we look forward to taking delivery of number 700. Our customers are looking forward to these additional modern, economical, and fuel-efficient aircraft.”

"The Lufthansa Group was one of the first customers for the A220 and has successfully operated the aircraft in its SWISS route network ever since. With its latest order Lufthansa reinforces its long standing relationship with Airbus. Since the A300 in the 1970’s, Lufthansa Group has operated all members of the Airbus product family, from the A220, A320-Family, A330 / A340, A350 and the A380.

The latest state-of-the-art A220-300 is the larger sibling of the successful A220 Family, carrying between 120 to 150 passengers on flights of up to 3,400 nautical miles (6,300 km). The aircraft offers 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft. It also has the largest cabin, seats and windows in its class, ensuring superior comfort. 

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). All Airbus commercial, military aircraft and helicopters will be capable of being operated with up to 100% SAF by 2030.

By the end of November, Airbus won 849 orders from 31 customers for the A220, of which 303 have been delivered. The A220 is already in successful service with 18 airlines worldwide on 1,350+ routes.

Qantas Group takes delivery of its first Airbus A220

Mirabel, 15 December 2023 - Australia’s national carrier has taken delivery of its first new generation A220, becoming the 20th operator of the type. The aircraft is the first of 29 A220s ordered by the Qantas Group for operation by QantasLink, their regional airline that services metropolitan and regional destinations across Australia.

Featuring a unique livery based on an Aboriginal artwork, the aircraft will depart the Airbus final assembly line in Mirabel in the coming days for a delivery flight to Sydney, with stops in Vancouver, Honolulu and Nadi.

The A220 will gradually replace the existing 717 fleet at QantasLink. Flying twice as far, the A220 can connect any two points across Australia non-stop, while also bringing a significant 25% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft.

The A220 also has the largest cabin, seats and windows in its class, offering passengers superior comfort. With a total of 137 seats, Qantas’ A220s will be configured in a two class layout seating 10 passengers in business and 127 in economy.

Specifically designed for the 100-150 seat segment, the A220 is the most modern airliner in its size category. Powered by the latest generation Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines, it can fly up to 3,450 nautical miles or 6,390 kilometres non-stop. 

As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be capable of operating with 100% SAF by 2030. 

Airbus has received close to 850 orders from 30 customers for the A220, of which over 300 have been delivered worldwide.

Azul Linhas Aéreas discloses incremental order for four A330neos


São Paulo, 15 December 2023 – Azul discloses a firm order for four additional A330-900 from a purchase agreement signed in June 2023. With these aircraft, the airline will expand its fleet and international route offering.

“We are proud to announce this order, as it confirms Azul as the airline with the most fuel- efficient fleet in the region, with over 80% of our capacity coming from next-generation aircraft. With the five A330neos we currently operate and the seven we now have on order, we will standardize our international fleet, allowing us to further enhance Azul’s renowned customer experience and on-time performance,” said Alexandre Malfitani, Azul’s Chief Financial Officer.

The A330neo is Airbus’ latest widebody aircraft. Powered by the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330-900 is capable of flying 7,200 nm / 13,300 km non-stop. At the end of November 2023, the A330 Family had accumulated over 1,800 firm orders from more than 130 customers worldwide, making it the world’s most popular widebody family, dominating the short-and medium-haul widebody market.

The A330neo features the award-winning Airspace cabin, which offers passengers a high level of comfort, ambience, and design. This includes more individual space, enlarged overhead bins, a new lighting system and access to the latest in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems.

Azul Linhas Aereas launched operations in 2008 and has since grown to become one of the largest airlines in Brazil by servicing more than 160 destinations within Brazil, the United States, Europe and South America. Azul received the Americas’ first A330neo in 2019 and operates 12 A330 Family aircraft. 

Airbus has sold over 1,150 aircraft in Latin America and the Caribbean. More than 750 are in operation throughout the region, with around 500 in the order backlog, representing a market share of 58% of in-service passenger aircraft. Since 1994, Airbus has secured 75% of net orders in the region.

Japan Airlines takes delivery of 1st Airbus A350-1000

With a special ceremony at Toulouse-Blagnac, Japan Airlines took delivery of its first Airbus A350-1000 on 14 December 2023. After the ceremony, the aircraft, JA01WJ (610), flew directly to the airline's base at Tokyo-Haneda.

The new Airbus is the first of thirteen A350-1000s the airline has on order. It already operates a fleet of sixteen A350-900s (with two more on order) since 2019. While the 900s are being used domestically only, the 1000s will be the airline's new international flagships.

Japan Airlines is outfitting its A350-1000s with six seats in First Class, 54 in Business Class, 24 Premium Economy, and 155 Economy seats. The first route it will serve is to New York-JFK (NY).

Turkish Airlines orders Airbuses for expansion

On 15 December 2023, Airbus and Turkish Airlines announced that both companies reached an agreement for a very large firm order for 220 new Airbuses. In total, the airline is ordering 150 A321neos, 50 A350-900s, fifteen A350-1000s, and five A350Fs.

Turkish also secured purchase options for 100 A321neos, 20 A350-900s, and five A350Fs.

Earlier this year, the airline already ordered fourteen A350-900s and the new ones are on top of those. In total, Turkish Airlines has now ordered 504 new Airbuses directly with Airbus, of which 212 have been delivered.

With these new aircraft, Turkish Airlines wants to expand its fleet and flights out of its hub at the new Istanbul Airport. Already today, the airline is the airline with the most destinations served in the world.

There have no delivery timelines been communicated by Airbus and Turkish Airlines on when the new aircraft should all be delivered.

Today, the Turkish Airlines' fleet is made up of six A319s, twelve A320s, 65 A321s, 41 A321neos, 10 A330-200Fs, 11 A330-200s, 36 A330-300s, sixteen A350-900s, 40 Boeing B737-800s, fifteen B737-900ERs, 20 B737-8s, five B737-9s, eight B777Fs, 35 B777-300ERs, and 22 B787-9s.

Viet Nam's Bamboo Airways adds A320 capacity for travel peak

In a sign the fleet consolidation process at Bamboo Airways (QH, Hanoi Noi Bai International) has bottomed out, the airline will lease two narrowbody Airbus aircraft to provide extra capacity over the upcoming New Year and Têt (Vietnamese New Year) travel peak.

The carrier confirmed the presumed wet-lease via a December 11, 2023, statement, saying it had sourced a single A320-200 and A321-200 from an unidentified lessor, with the aircraft due to enter service from January 1, 2024. They are the first additions to the Bamboo Airways fleet since the airline underwent a restructuring this year, resulting in many aircraft returning to lessors.

"The successful leasing of two aircraft and increased load to serve the Tet peak season affirms Bamboo Airways' recovery efforts, as well as demonstrates the trust of partners in the airline's existence and development," a spokesperson said.

Bamboo's existing fleet is down to 15 aircraft, including two A320-200s, four A320-200Ns, four A321-200s, and five ERJ 190-100LRs. The airline says the additional two aircraft will boost its available seat capacity by 20% over the holiday period. The Bamboo Airways spokesperson said the airline will deploy most of that additional capacity onto the Ho Chi Minh City - Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh - Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh - Vinh City, Ho Chi Minh - Thanh Hoa, and Ho Chi Minh - Haiphong city pairs.

Air New Zealand again turns to wet-leased A330 capacity

Air New Zealand (NZ, Auckland International) will revert back to wet leasing an A330-200 from Wamos Air (EB, Madrid Barajas) to operate on the Auckland - Perth International city pair between February 9 and April 30, 2024. The aircraft plugs a capacity gap caused by Pratt & Whitney engine issues. The Spanish ACMI/charter specialist had operated on behalf of Air New Zealand on the route for most of 2023.

"As Air New Zealand prepares some of its fleet to undergo maintenance next year due to global engine maintenance issues, which several airlines around the world are facing, the airline will be re-entering a temporary lease agreement with Wamos Air to help get customers to where they need to be," reads a statement issued by the airline this week. "Enlisting the help of Wamos Air will ensure that there’s extra flexibility in the operation due to the extra maintenance requirements and for any unexpected challenges or other disruptions beyond the airline’s control. This is a temporary, proactive measure to help protect our customers’ travel plans."

Under the current schedule, it takes almost 16 hours to work the 10,700-kilometre roundtrip flight to Perth, including two hours on the ground at that airport. Wamos had operated the A330-200 on the sector across the 12 months to October 28, 2023, when Air New Zealand redeployed one of its B787-9s back onto the route. That decision followed the induction of a B777-300ER from Air Lease Corporation on a three-year operating lease. However, the airline continues to experience a shortage of widebody capacity while it awaits the delivery of two more B787-9s and six B787-10s from Boeing (BOE, Washington National).

Exacerbating the capacity problem, Air New Zealand also expects several of its A320neo to temporarily cease operations over the coming months for engine removals and inspections following Pratt & Whitney's worldwide geared turbofan engine recall notice. Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran has previously said the carrier would need to adjust schedules and potentially put some widebodies onto routes normally operated by A320neo Family aircraft. Foran said Air New Zealand is also looking to lease additional aircraft to provide certainty around

Spain's Swiftair to add two A321-200(P2F)s

Swiftair (WT, Madrid Barajas) has signed a lease agreement with AerCap to add two converted A321-200(P2F)s in the second quarter of 2024.

"In line with our commitment towards more efficient and sustainable growth, we are delighted to be taking delivery of two of the most quiet and economical freighter aircraft in the world today. These aircraft mark a milestone in our fleet renewal program, allowing our customers to meet their carbon reduction targets and access to the most effective and reliable products in their class, available in the market today," Chief Executive Salvador Moreno said.

The aircraft will be converted by Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) at the ST Engineering Aerospace facility at Singapore Seletar airport. The deliveries are scheduled for April and June 2024.

AerCap ordered fifteen A321-200 conversions from EFW in 2022. The lessor currently manages two A321 freighters: an A321-200(P2F) leased to IndiGo Airlines (6E, Delhi International) and an A321-200(PCF) due for Sichuan Airlines (3U, Chengdu Shuangliu), according to the ch-aviation fleets ownership module.

Swiftair's fleet currently comprises five ATR42-300(F)s, one ATR72-200, six ATR72-200(F)s, six ATR72-500(F)s, three ATR72-500(QC)s, one B737-300(F), one B737-400(F), nine B737-400(SF)s, three B737-800(BCF)s, four B737-800(BDSF)s, two B757-200(PCF), one B757-200PF, three EMB-120RT(F)s, and one EMB-120RT(QC).

Uzbekistan's Humo Air details network launch plans

Humo Air (HJ, Tashkent International) plans to start flying on December 15 after it started selling tickets for flights.

The carrier says it intends to run daily flights from its Tashkent International base to each of SamarkandNukusUrgench, and Karshi. Operations are to be onboard A320-200 equipment although the first has yet to be delivered.

Flights to Almaty, Istanbul, and Dubai are scheduled to start in 2024.

Though already certificated for Special Aviation Operations by the Uzbek civil aviation regulator, Humo Air has yet to secure its commercial passenger services permit. It was acquired by Swiss private equity firm ValleyRoad Capital Humo S.A last year.
