Breeze discloses additional Airbus A220-order

On 20 February 2024, Airbus announced that Breeze Airways has placed an order for more A220-300s. In total, the airline has signed-up for ten additional aircraft. With this latest order, the total number of ordered A220s by Breeze stands at 90, making it the third largest customer of the type.

Breeze has, so far, taken delivery of 21 A220-300s, which it operates alongside its ten Embraer ERJ190s, and six ERJ195s. The airline also announced that it will move to an all-A220 operation by the end of this year, phasing-out its Embraers.

Azorra places 1st Airbus A220s

Leasing company Azorra Aviation has announced on 26 June 2023 that it has placed its first two of 22 A220s it has on order with Airbus. Both will be leased to Breeze Airways, and are scheduled for delivery early 2024.

The airline is planning to utilize the duo to accelerate the phase-out of its ERJ190/195s, which has been impacted by the delay of new A220s. Breeze has ordered a total of 80 A220s directly with Airbus, and has so far taken delivery of fourteen of them. It also operates ten ERJ190s, and seven ERJ195s.

Breeze Airways' 3rd Airbus A220 Delivered After Diversion

Breeze Airways took delivery of its third Airbus A220-300 on Friday. However, the delivery of this aircraft was a little less straightforward than most. The aircraft's first attempt at reaching its new home had to be cancelled, with a diversion back to Mobile, Alabama. Fortunately, the second attempt was a success.

1st attempt failure

Severe weather at and en route to Fort Lauderdale (FLL) meant that Breeze's third Airbus A220-300 had to divert back to its origin of Mobile, Alabama (BFM). The US-assembled jet, registered N206BZ, departed Mobile at 09:22 local time, destined for its new home in Florida. However, just after flying over Tallahassee, unstable weather reported at FLL led to the aircraft being put in a holding pattern for about 30 minutes as the crew determined the next course of action. After circling twice off the coast of Florida, the aircraft returned to Mobile, touching down at 12:04 local time.

Indeed, examining data from FlightRadar24.com, Breeze's new A220 was far from the only aircraft affected by severe weather across Florida. Arrivals and departure data for Fort Lauderdale airport show that the majority of flights were delayed in landing or taking off, with a handful of services also being cancelled.

2nd attempt success

After touching down back in Mobile at 12:04 local time, it appears that the crew was confident in making a second attempt very soon after. Indeed, the jet spent very little time on the ground, having taken off at 12:36- a mere 32 minutes after touching down.

The second attempt was, thankfully, a success, with the aircraft completing a one-hour and 34-minute flight from Mobile to Fort Lauderdale. The jet touched down at its Florida destination at 15:10

Breeze's small A220 fleet

While Breeze Airways' fleet is dominated by the Embraer E190, it's no secret that the Airbus A220-300 is the type that will eventually be the backbone of the airline's operations.

The airline has a whopping 80 of the narrowbody jets on order. Initially, the carrier had placed an order for 60 A220-300s. However, in September of 2021, the carrier boosted its commitment with an additional 20 jets.

Although the airline now has three A220s, passenger operations have yet to begin. Breeze is expected to begin Airbus A220-flights in May.

US's Breeze Airways inducts first A220

Breeze Airways (MX, Salt Lake City) has taken delivery of its first A220-300 following the handover of N203BZ (msn 55128), which was then ferried from Mobile Downtown to Tampa Int'l on December 17, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows.

The jet is the first of 11 such aircraft due to be leased by Breeze Airways from AerCap. The second is slated for delivery by the end of the month, with the remaining nine due in 2022-2023. Breeze Airways will lease a further three A220-300s from Einn Volant Aircraft Leasing Holdings Limited, a joint venture between AerCap and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec investment firm. The three jets will be managed by AerCap and will deliver in 2022.

Breeze Airways has eighty A220-300s on order from Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) in total, including 20 confirmed in September 2021. The start-up, backed by David Neeleman, intends to use the jets for medium-haul flights, while short-haul legs of less than two hours will continue to be operated predominantly with E190/E195 regional jets.

The airline will deploy the A220s in a premium-heavy configuration with 36 business and 90 economy class seats (including ten with extended legroom). It has yet to file schedules for the type but said previously that it would begin their commercial operation in the first half of 2022.

Breeze Airways reveals new A220 livery, confirms order for 20 additional A220-300 aircraft from Mobile Final Assembly Line

Mobile, Alabama, 13 Sept. 2021 – Breeze Airways has revealed its new A220-300 livery, while confirming that it has reached a purchase agreement with Airbus for 20 more of the aircraft. This previously undisclosed order for 20 brings Breeze’s total order book to 80 A220-300s, the first of which will be delivered in Q4 2021.

The aircraft’s fresh paint job was completed at Airbus’ facility in Mobile, Alabama, which will deliver approximately one A220 per month to Breeze over the next six-and-a-half years. The airline plans to begin flights with the Airbus fleet in the second quarter of 2022. 

The A220 superior efficiency will support the new airline’s business objectives to offer a great travel experience, with low fares and high flexibility. Breeze is expected to provide nonstop service between underserved routes across the U.S. at affordable fares.

Breeze started airline operations in May 2021. This first A220 is the first new aircraft that will be operated by the airline.

The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market and brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines. Benefitting from the latest technologies, the A220 is the quietest, cleanest and most eco-friendly aircraft in its category. Featuring a 50% reduced noise footprint and up to 25% lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, as well as around 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards, the A220 is a great aircraft for urban operations.

Over 170 A220s have been delivered to ten operators in Asia, North Americas, Europe, and Africa, proving the great versatility of Airbus’ latest family member.

1st Breeze Airways A220 painted

The first A220-300 for Breeze Airways has rolled-out of the paintshop at the Airbus-plant in Mobile (AL). The aircraft will become N203BZ (55128) and is planned for delivery in October.

At the same time the airline announced it has decided to firm options on another twenty A220-300s. Already in April we reported on this order when Airbus booked the twenty aircraft for an undisclosed customer. With this order, Breeze now has 80 A220-300s on order. Today, Breeze operates a fleet of ten ERJ190s and three ERJ195s.

Utah's Breeze Airways boosts A220 order book - report

Breeze Airways (MXY, Salt Lake City) has reportedly ordered twenty incremental A220-300s increasing its total order for the type to 80 units, Reuters has reported citing internal sources.

While neither the start-up nor Airbus confirmed the order, on March 25, the European manufacturer did record an order for twenty A220-300s from an undisclosed customer.

With sixty firm-ordered A220-300s, Breeze Airways is already the world's third-largest customer for the family, tied with Air France. Only Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways have more A220s on firm order: 95 (including 49 already delivered) and 70 (one delivered), respectively. Breeze Airways is scheduled to start taking delivery of its A220s in October 2021 and hopes to induct the type into revenue service in late 2021 or early 2022. It will use the A220s primarily on medium-haul routes, while it will operate short-haul services with Embraer regional jets.

Breeze Airways has reportedly lobbied Airbus for an extended-range variant of the A220 with additional fuel tanks, which would permit it to deploy the aircraft on long-haul services to Latin America or Europe.
