Airbus Updates No.4726

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines welcomes 1st Airbus A350-900

After a flight of almost 1,5 hours from Toulouse-Blagnac, KLM's first Airbus A350-900 touched down at Schiphol on 2 October 2026. Registered PH-ZNA (809), the aircraft was greeted by a welcome ceremony including the traditional water-salute by the airport's fire brigade.

The A350 is the first of 22 the airline has gotten allocated of the 99 A350s Air France-KLM (both passenger-aircraft and freighters) has ordered in total with Airbus. The airline group also holds purchase rights for another 40 aircraft.

Within the KLM-fleet, the A350-900 will be used to replace its older fleet of Airbus A330s and Boeing B777-200ERs.

On 3 October 2026, KLM will begin crew familiarisation flights with its new aircraft by deploying it on two round-trips from Amsterdam to Stavanger. In a few weeks, the A350 is set to be used on flights to Toronto. The other destinations the aircraft is planned for in the upcoming Winter 2026-schedule are Montreal, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, and Zanzibar.

KLM's second A350-900 is scheduled to be delivered later this year, with a third following early next year.

The widebody-fleet of KLM is currently made-up of five A330-200s, five A330-300s, fifteen B777-200ERs, sixteen B777-300ERs, thirteen B787-9s, and fifteen B787-10s.

 Animawings in financial trouble

Trouble is brewing at Animawings. On 29 September 2026, the airline was forced to park its Airbus A220s due to unpaid lease fees and conflict with their lessors. A day later, the airline began insolvency proceedings at the court in Bucharest.

The proceedings will enable the airline to restructure and find new investors. For now, it will continue operations with its A320s while they work on resolving the issue with the lessors of the A220s.

Animawings said that technical issues with the A220s, as well increased fuel prices has impacted the airline's financial outlook in a very negative way.

The airline was founded in 2019 and began flying a year later. It currently has a fleet of six Airbus A220-300s and two A320s.

Airbus A350F flies for the 1st time

On 29 September 2026 Airbus conducted the first flight of the A350F, a major step for the programme. The aircraft, A350-1041F F-WXLD (700), took off from Toulouse-Blagnac at 10:30 local time for a four hour test-flight above France.

Airbus announced the A350F in July 2021, with formal board approval received a few months later. The aircraft is a mix between the A350-900 and the A350-1000. It has a slightly longer fuselage then the -900 and the wings and engines of the -1000. The A350F is 70,8 meters, four meters longer than the -900 and four meters shorter than the -1000. The length was chosen to have the right center of gravity.

The A350F has a payload of up to 111 tonnes. That is about two to nine tonnes less than a Boeing B747-400F. However, as the airframe is 32 tonnes lighter, it will burn 40% less fuel compared to the Jumbojet. It can fly it's cargo up to 8,700 km, a range that fits one of the world's busiest cargo routes; Hong Kong to Anchorage (AK).

After first flight, Airbus expects that the certification process will take up to nine months. A second test-aircraft is due to fly later this year and join the test programme. If they're able to meet the expectations, Airbus foresees certification in the third quarter of 2027, and delivery shortly thereafter.

Since the launch, Airbus has logged 115 firm orders for the A350F. The breakdown of those can be found in the table below.

Airbus Updates No.4721

Air Niugini turns to airBaltic for A220 pilots

Air Niugini (PX, Port Moresby) has entered into a cooperation agreement with airBaltic (BT, Riga) under which up to 45 airBaltic pilots may "voluntarily operate" Air Niugini's A220s from 2027, the Latvian carrier confirmed to ch-aviation.

In a September 10 press release, Air Niugini chief executive Alan Milne separately announced that 44 experienced airBaltic pilots would support its own A220 operations from next year, as the carrier seeks about 100 pilots for its future growth while continuing to train its own workforce.

Air Niugini's Airbus fleet currently comprises three dry-leased A220-300s and it has a further eight A220-100s on firm order. The latter are due for delivery between 2027 and 2029 and will directly replace the carrier's ageing F70s and F100s.

The pilot arrangement comes as airBaltic undergoes substantial network and fleet cuts, with the Latvian carrier announcing in August plans to reduce its A220-300 fleet from 54 aircraft to around 36 by the end of 2026, before gradually rebuilding it to around 40 by 2031.

Air Niugini disclosed the agreement four days before airBaltic filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States on September 14. Two days later, the court granted interim approval for an initial EUR140 million euros (USD161 million) of a EUR350 million (USD404 million) debtor-in-possession financing facility.

airBaltic confirmed the pilot agreement to ch-aviation after the Chapter 11 filing, though it did not clarify whether the restructuring had changed the terms of the cooperation. ch-aviation has similarly reached out to Air Niugini for comment.

Vietnamese airlines signs MoUs with Airbus

On 10 September 2026, the president of France and Vietnam held a summit in Paris to strenghten their economic ties. Part of the summit was the signing of two Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) by Vietravel and Vietnam Airlines with Airbus.

Vietnam Airlines agreed in the MoU to work on finalizing an order for five additional A350-900s. The new aircraft are planned to be delivered between 2033 and 2034. Today, the airline already operates fourteen of them.

Vietravel in its turn signed-up for 20 A220-300s and 30 A321neos, which will also include the A321XLR. Deliveries of this order is due to begin in 2029. Currently, it has a fleet of one A320 and four A321s.

AIRCAIRO places order for 15 Airbus A320neo aircraft

El Alamein, Egypt, 8 September 2026 – AIRCAIRO, Egypt’s National growing Air-carrier, has signed a firm order for 15 Airbus A320neo aircraft at the El Alamein International Airshow 2026. The agreement marks an important milestone in the airline's strategy as it introduces direct aircraft ownership alongside its leased Airbus fleet to support long-term growth.

Having grown rapidly from seven aircraft five years ago to a fleet of over 45 aircraft today, AIRCAIRO is building on this momentum to grow to a fleet of over 130 aircraft by 2034. The firm order provides the airline with the capacity, flexibility, and operational efficiency needed to expand connectivity across its domestic, regional, and international networks.

Hussein Sherif, Chairman & CEO, AIRCAIRO, said: “This agreement represents a natural next step in AIRCAIRO’s growth. Combining owned aircraft with our leased fleet gives us greater operational flexibility and financial efficiency as we scale up. The A320neo will provide the capacity needed to expand our network, serve the growing demand for travel to and from Egypt, and support the country's aviation and tourism sectors in close partnership with Airbus.”

“We are delighted that this first direct acquisition from AIRCAIRO reaffirms the airline’s confidence in the A320neo to power its next phase of growth,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business. “The A320neo provides AIRCAIRO with the efficiency and flexibility to scale up its network. This commitment highlights the strength of our partnership and AIRCAIRO’s confidence in the A320neo to expand connectivity between Egypt and key international destinations.”

The A320 Family is the world’s most popular single-aisle aircraft, having won more than 20,200 orders globally. The Family includes the largest member, the A321neo, offering unparalleled range and performance. The Family offers at least 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft, while maximising passenger comfort with one of the widest single-aisle cabins in the sky.
