Germany's Condor takes first A320neo

Condor (DE, Frankfurt International) took delivery of its first A320-200N on April 24, 2024, kick starting the renewal of its narrowbody fleet.

D-ANCZ (msn 12031) was ferried directly from Toulouse Blagnac to Frankfurt International. The aircraft is on lease from Avolon and configured for up to 180 passengers in a single-class layout. Condor plans to induct the aircraft into revenue service on May 15, with the first flight to Palma de Mallorca.

The German leisure specialist plans to add 41 new-generation narrowbodies, comprising thirteen A320-200Ns and twenty-eight A321-200Ns. The first A321neo is scheduled for delivery in June. Only two units of each type are on direct orders from Airbus, with the remainder due from various lessors. The ch-aviation fleets module shows that at least two A320neo and four A321neo will come from BOC Aviation, and at least seventeen A321neo from Air Lease Corporation. The deliveries of the new-generation narrowbodies are set to conclude by 2029.

The A320/1neo will replace Condor's current narrowbody fleet, which includes twelve A320-200s, thirteen A321-200s, and nine B757-300s.

Condor recently retired its last B767-300ERs and completed the renewal of its widebody fleet, which currently comprises fifteen A330-900s. It has eight more due, including four from Airbus and four from lessors (including two from AerCap). The carrier's fleet renewal was sparked by the acquisition by Attestor Capital in 2021.

JetBlue inks six more A220, A321neo sale/lease-backs

JetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) and BOC Aviation have entered into a new sale-and-leaseback agreement, this time covering three A220-300s and three A321-200neo through BOC Aviation (USA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Singapore-based, Hong Kong-listed lessor.

In a stock market filing, BOC Aviation said the finance leases of the aircraft are scheduled to close in 2024.

It is the fourth finance agreement between both parties, bringing the tally to 33 aircraft (twelve A321neo and twenty-one A220-300s).

ch-aviation reached JetBlue for comment on the sale-and-leaseback transaction, requesting information regarding the aircraft registrations and serial numbers involved in the agreement. The airline wasn’t immediately available.

Condor to lease four Airbus A321neo, two Airbus A320neo

Condor (DE, Frankfurt International) will dry-lease two new-build A320-200Ns and four A321-200Ns from BOC Aviation, with deliveries due in 2027-2028.

The Singapore-based lessor announced a new order directly from Airbus to source the aircraft for Condor. It did not reveal the duration of the dry leases.

The German leisure specialist currently operates twelve A320-200s, eleven A321-200s, four A330-200s, twelve A330-900s, nine B757-300s, and four B767-300ERs. Condor also has confirmed commitments for a further nine A320-200Ns and twenty-two A321-200Ns, including at least one A320-200N and seventeen A321-200Ns from Air Lease Corporation. US’s JetBlue inks ten more A220, A321neo sale/lease-backs

JetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) has entered into another sale-and-leaseback agreement with BOC Aviation, this time covering eight A220-300s and two A321neo aircraft through BOC Aviation (USA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Singapore-based, Hong Kong-listed lessor.

A stock market filing says BOC Aviation (USA) will lease the Airbus aircraft back to the airline under finance lease transactions that are expected to close in 2023.

It is the third finance lease agreement that BOC and JetBlue have signed recently, bringing the tally to 27 aircraft. Deals inked in June and September covered two A321neo and five A220s, and five A321neo and five A220s, respectively.

According to ch-aviation fleets advanced data, JetBlue currently operates twenty A321-200NX, of which it owns 14 and leases the other six from DAE Capital. Solomon Airlines in talks for second A320

Solomons - Solomon Airlines (IE, Honiara) is looking to secure a second A320-200 to capitalise on demand for travel to Honiara for the 17th Pacific Games later this year. Solomon Airlines CEO Gus Kraus told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Commission that a letter of intent (LOI) had been signed with the lessor and lease negotiations were expected to commence shortly.

If the lease proceeds, it will provide the state-owned carrier with its second jet aircraft and offer some much needed capacity when the other aircraft goes out of service. Kraus did not provide specific information on the incoming aircraft, other than saying it was former Jetstar Airways (JQ, Melbourne Tullamarine) Airbus stock, and that he hoped to have it by July or August.

“The purchase will see us having a new modern airplane that is under 10 years old," he said. "That’s the newest airplane we’ve got." Solomon Airlines currently operates a fleet of five aircraft, including one 18.04 year-old A320-200, one 31.79 year-old DHC-8-100, and three DHC-6-300s variously aged 47.08 years, 47.49 years, and 53.32 years old.

Kraus says aside from providing extra capacity over the Pacific Games period, the additional jet would be used on charters, including seasonal work charters, and flights to Port Moresby and Kiribati. "There's plenty of work ahead," he said. "In the longer term, we want to talk with Tonga and Samoa if they have a need for airline services as they don’t have national airlines."

According to ch-aviation fleets advanced data, Jetstar has exited three A320-200s since the start of 2022, with the two most recent transferring to Network Aviation (NWK, Perth International), a closed charter specialist airline also owned by Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith). However, ch-aviation has confirmed that the aircraft under negotiation is 2-HVFN (msn 5566). Jetstar returned the plane, then registered as VH-VFN, to BOC Aviation in October 2022. The aircraft is 10.16 years old and is currently at Singapore Seletar for maintenance. Representatives from Solomon Airlines plan to inspect the aircraft next week.

Meanwhile, Kraus also said having its sole A320-200, H4-SIB (msn 2445), out of service multiple times this year had proven a costly exercise for the small state-owned airline. He said the aircraft was out of service for ten days in January, three days in March, and fourteen days in late April/early May. The beneficiary was Nauru Airlines (ON, Nauru) which billed Solomon Airlines SBD4.5 million Solomon Islands dollars (USD540,000) for charter flights.

"All revenues made from selling tickets, we don’t keep because we must pay it out for the chartered flights," said Kraus. "This affects us in two ways; us paying another operator to provide our services, and paying the Airbus lease payments."

He confirmed the most recent out-of-service incident was due to a fuel contamination issue in the wing fuel tanks, which he says are checked every time the aircraft lands. "The recent contamination was found in the wing tanks. This saw our maintenance controller in Brisbane making the decision for us to ground the plane."

Kraus also said that H4-SIB would be out of service for two weeks from May 22 for scheduled maintenance at Melbourne Tullamarine. During this time, Nauru Airlines will operate many of Solomon Airlines' scheduled A320 flights but Kraus said he was also looking for another short term wet-lessor to cover what Nauru Airlines could not.

BOC Aviation Orders 80 More A320s Bringing Total Airbus Order To 453 Aircraft

Aircraft leasing firm, BOC Aviation, has announced that it has signed a firm order for 80 Airbus A320neo family jets. The order will comprise 10 A321XLR, 50 A321neo, and 20 A320neo. Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled between 2027 and 2029.

Speaking about the deal on Monday, Robert Martin, BOC Aviation Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, noted,

“We are proud to continue our long-standing relationship with Airbus, with whom we have partnered for more than 26 years. This is the largest single order that we have ever placed and it will bring our total Airbus aircraft purchased since inception to 546. It underscores our continued confidence in the A320neo family for its reliability and operational efficiency and reflects the popularity of the aircraft amongst our airline customers. We look forward to continuously providing our customers with such fuel-efficient and technologically advanced aircraft solutions.”

Why Airbus?

The A320neo is an upgrade of Airbus’ popular narrowbody series and has totaled over 7,900 orders from over 120 customers since its launch. Over 2,100 A320neo family aircraft have been delivered since its entry into service six years ago.

The jet has been a popular choice with carriers thanks to its new generation engines and “Sharklets,” which can deliver 20% fuel and CO2 savings, with an additional 50% noise reduction. Airbus reports that the jets have contributed to saving 10 million tons of CO2 since 2016. The A321XLR provides a range up to 4,700NM, with a flight time of 11 hours.

BOC Aviation’s A320neos have gone on to serve in the fleets of various carriers, including MEAIndiGo, and Wizz Air, with the aircraft lessor having over 100 of the type in its catalog.

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, added,

“Airbus thanks BOC Aviation for its unwavering trust and endorsement of the A320neo Family with its single largest order ever placed. This significant long term order for 80 additional aircraft is a great testimony of the sustained value of our Single Aisle products by one of the world’s leading lessors, BOC Aviation. We salute its vision and foresight in securing future delivery positions of these most desirable assets in the single aisle segment now and in the longer run.”

Growth for BOC Aviation

While certain parts of the aviation sector have struggled throughout the pandemic, BOC Aviation has thrived; at one point the company is reported to have leased 99% of its inventory. BOC Aviation notably saw a 10% year-on-year increase in earnings through 2021, posting a net profit of $561 million for the full year ended 31 December 2021. The aircraft lessor has moved to expand its fleet further, with 530 aircraft in its catalog for Q1 of 2022.

Its current Airbus portfolio as of April 2022 comprises 117 A320ceo, 125 A320neo, 17 A330, and 9 A350

Colombia's Avianca Airlines returns last A321neo

Avianca Airlines (AV, Bogotá) returned its last two A321-200Ns to lessor SMBC Aviation Capital having kept the aircraft in storage since March 2020.

ch-aviation research shows N759AV (msn 7770) and N761AV (msn 7847) were ferried from Bogotá and Medellín José Maria Córdova to Orlando Sanford on August 21, 2021. The former had been in storage at the Colombian capital uninterruptedly since the initial COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020. The latter had initially been stored in Medellin but was ferried to Fortaleza for maintenance on August 2 and returned to Colombia for one day on August 20, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows.

Avianca Holdings, the Colombian carrier's Panama-based parent, is a major A320neo Family customer. During two separate deals in 2012 and 2015, the holding ordered a total of 133 aircraft. However, facing financial hardship even before the pandemic, it gradually trimmed its outstanding commitment to 88 in January 2020. At that time, the group had already taken delivery of three A320-200Ns from its direct order with Airbus and a further seven via SMBC, as well as the pair of A321neo ordered directly by Avianca but subsequently sold and leased back from SMBC, according to the ch-aviation fleets history module. Since then, it has not added any more A320neo and said that no deliveries would happen before the end of 2024. The ten A320neo already delivered are split between the AOC of Avianca Airlines in Colombia (seven units) and Avianca Airlines El Salvador (three).

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, besides the eighty-eight A320neo on direct order from Airbus, Avianca Airlines plans to add two second-hand ex-Interjet units of the type on lease from Aviation Capital Group, two ordered by Avianca Holdings but due to come on lease from Aviation Capital Group, and ten on lease from BOC Aviation. It does not have any A321neo on order either directly or from lessors.
