Airbus Updates No.4268

Germany's Condor takes first A320neo

Condor (DE, Frankfurt International) took delivery of its first A320-200N on April 24, 2024, kick starting the renewal of its narrowbody fleet.

D-ANCZ (msn 12031) was ferried directly from Toulouse Blagnac to Frankfurt International. The aircraft is on lease from Avolon and configured for up to 180 passengers in a single-class layout. Condor plans to induct the aircraft into revenue service on May 15, with the first flight to Palma de Mallorca.

The German leisure specialist plans to add 41 new-generation narrowbodies, comprising thirteen A320-200Ns and twenty-eight A321-200Ns. The first A321neo is scheduled for delivery in June. Only two units of each type are on direct orders from Airbus, with the remainder due from various lessors. The ch-aviation fleets module shows that at least two A320neo and four A321neo will come from BOC Aviation, and at least seventeen A321neo from Air Lease Corporation. The deliveries of the new-generation narrowbodies are set to conclude by 2029.

The A320/1neo will replace Condor's current narrowbody fleet, which includes twelve A320-200s, thirteen A321-200s, and nine B757-300s.

Condor recently retired its last B767-300ERs and completed the renewal of its widebody fleet, which currently comprises fifteen A330-900s. It has eight more due, including four from Airbus and four from lessors (including two from AerCap). The carrier's fleet renewal was sparked by the acquisition by Attestor Capital in 2021.

Condor to lease four Airbus A321neo, two Airbus A320neo

Condor (DE, Frankfurt International) will dry-lease two new-build A320-200Ns and four A321-200Ns from BOC Aviation, with deliveries due in 2027-2028.

The Singapore-based lessor announced a new order directly from Airbus to source the aircraft for Condor. It did not reveal the duration of the dry leases.

The German leisure specialist currently operates twelve A320-200s, eleven A321-200s, four A330-200s, twelve A330-900s, nine B757-300s, and four B767-300ERs. It plans to rollover its narrowbody fleet to the A320neo Family with a firm order for four A320-200Ns and six A321-200Ns directly from Airbus. Condor also has confirmed commitments for a further nine A320-200Ns and twenty-two A321-200Ns, including at least one A320-200N and seventeen A321-200Ns from Air Lease Corporation. The airline also plans to add two more A321-200s formerly operated by Heston Airlines (HN, Vilnius) and ten more A330-900s.

The ch-aviation fleets ownership module shows that BOC Aviation currently owns seventy-eight A320neo and thirty A321neo (including four A321-200NX(LR)s), but does not lease any aircraft to Condor. Including the new commitment, the lessor has unfilled orders for forty-four A320-200Ns, sixty-five A321-200Ns, and ten A321-200NY(XLR)s directly from the manufacturer.

Condor Takes Delivery Of Airbus' 100th A330neo

Airbus has delivered its 100th A330neo, with German carrier Condor receiving the milestone aircraft. D-ANRJ arrived in Condor's eye-catching 'Condor Beach' livery and operated its first revenue flight yesterday.

Airbus hits A330neo century

The European planemaker delivered its first A330neo over four years ago and has now achieved 100 deliveries of the next-generation widebody following the arrival of D-ANRJ at Condor. It is an impressive achievement for Airbus given the disruption caused by the COVID pandemic, although aircraft deliveries have gotten off to a rocky start in 2023 after Boeing overtook Airbus in quarterly deliveries for the first time since 2018.

D-ANRJ touched down at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) on April 7th following a 90-minute flight from Airbus' facility at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS).

About D-ANRJ

Condor's latest Airbus A330-900 completed its first flight on March 16th and is equipped with two Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines. It can seat up to 310 passengers - 30 in business, 64 in premium economy and 216 in economy class.

Since arriving at Condor, the plane has conducted its first revenue flight with a ten-hour, 38-minute trip from Frankfurt to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) in Mauritius on April 12th. The carrier's next-generation widebodies also serve the Maldives, Punta Cana, Varadero, New York-JFK and Cancún.

Condor has now welcomed five Airbus A330neos into its fleet in the space of less than four months, with its first jet arriving on December 20th, 2022 - the carrier will take delivery of another 11 aircraft as part of an order for 16, hastening the retirement of its older Airbus A330-200 and Boeing 767 fleet.

A330 Day

Not missing out on an opportunity to express its pride in the versatile widebody, Airbus celebrated 'A330 Day' on March 30th. The A330 program has registered over 1,750 orders since its inception - as per Airbus' orderbook, the A330-900 has attracted 290 orders, with the manufacturer completing 90 deliveries overall by the end of March.

The manufacturer adds that there are 22 operators of the A330neo-family - which includes the -900 and the smaller -800 variant - on over 200 routes and destinations globally. Following the arrival of the first A330neo to launch customer TAP Air Portugal in December 2018, other carriers to fly the widebody include Delta Air Lines, Virgin Atlantic, Lion Air and Corsair International.

Condor Takes Delivery Of Its 2nd Airbus A330neo

Condor has welcomed its second Airbus A330neo following the arrival of its first earlier this month. The latest A330neo to arrive is part of a deal for six of the next-generation aircraft with lessor AerCap.

Another A330neo for Condor

The German carrier's second Airbus A330-900 (registration: D-ANRH) touched down in Frankfurt (FRA) on Thursday following an 85-minute flight from Toulouse. The brand-new Airbus A330neo, acquired on lease from Irish firm AerCap, departed Toulouse at 15:31 before arriving in Frankfurt at 16:56.

The aircraft has been painted in Condor's eye-catching new livery - unlike its first A33neo sporting its 'Island' green, D-ANRH has been decorated with the 'Beach' beige design. The new aircraft is scheduled to enter service in mid-January.

Peter Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer of AerCap, said,

"We are delighted to announce the delivery of the first of six new Airbus A330-900neo aircraft to Condor, and to see the aircraft painted in their distinctive new striped livery design. The A330neo aircraft is the perfect choice for Condor and will enable them to expand their network using the most modern, fuel-efficient technology while supporting their sustainability commitments. We wish the team every success and we look forward to continuing to build our partnership in the years to come."

More to arrive from next summer

Condor will induct five more A330neos as part of its leasing agreement with AerCap. The next plane is scheduled to arrive in the summer of 2023, with the final delivery taking place in 2024.

Björn Walther, Chief Financial Officer of Condor, said,

"With AerCap as our very experienced and supportive partner, we are looking forward to welcoming the next A330-900neo within the upcoming months. Thanks to the great cooperation we are able to take an important step towards a successful future."

In fact, Condor will eventually have 16 Airbus A330-900s in its fleet as the German launch customer of the type - the jet is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and offers around a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. As reported by Aviacionline, Condor plans to fly its A330neos to Male, Maldives (MLE), Varadero, Cuba (VRA) and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (PUJ).

First A330neo flight was a success

Following the delayed arrival of its first A330neo on December 19th, Condor has now successfully operated its first commercial flight with the efficient aircraft. On December 27th, the airline flew its first A330neo (registration: D-ANRA) from Frankfurt to Mauritius, departing FRA at 16:26 and landing at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) at 06:13+1.

The airline made headlines earlier this month after its first A330neo collided with a building in Toulouse, delaying its delivery and entry into service. Fortunately, the plane completed a Customer Acceptance Flight a few days later and has now entered service.

Condor's A330neos can carry up to 310 passengers - 30 in business, 64 in premium economy, and 216 in economy. Simple Flying took a closer look inside Condor's A330neo interior, boasting lie-flat seats in business class, Bluetooth connectivity and high-speed internet access.

Airbus Updates No.3889

Condor welcomes first Airbus A330-900

On 19 December 2022, Condor took delivery of its first Airbus A330-900. The aircraft is registered D-ANRA (1966) and arrived at the airline's base at Frankfurt late in the evening.

Airbus engineers worked really hard to deliver the aircraft on time as earlier, on 12 December 2022, the aircraft sustainted damage to its right wing when colliding with a building while being towed at Toulouse-Blagnac. As the damage was minimal, Condor was able to conduct the final acceptance flight on 16 December 2022, clearing the aircraft for delivery.

The A330-900 is the first of a total of eighteen Condor has on order. Its first commercial flight is scheduled to take place in the coming week and will bring it from Frankfurt to Mauritius. Later, the A330-900 will also be deployed to the Maldives and Punta Cana. The airline is using its new A330s to replace its ageing Boeing B767-300ERs.

Condor's current fleet consists of twelve A320-200s, eleven A321-200s, four A330-200s, two A330-300s, thirteen Boeing B757-300s, and nine B767-300ERs.

Germany's Condor chooses Airbus for narrow body renewal

Condor (DE, Frankfurt Int'l) has chosen Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) for its narrowbody fleet renewal with plans to source at least forty-one A320neo Family jets.

In a statement, the German leisure specialist said it would procure thirteen A320-200Ns and twenty-eight A321-200Ns via lease and direct purchases. It also has an unspecified number of purchase rights. Deliveries will start in Spring 2024.

"As of early 2024, we plan to phase in 6-10 of the short/medium haul aircraft to start the rollover of our short/medium-haul fleet," a spokeswoman told ch-aviation while declining to comment on the acquisition's exact make up.

Condor will use the new generation Airbus jets to replace its existing narrowbody fleet of thirteen A320-200s (of which nine are owned and the rest leased), ten A321-200s (of which all are leased), and thirteen B757-300s (of which two are owned and the rest leased).

The carrier is expecting sixteen A330-900s to replace its widebody fleet of sixteen B767-300(ER)s with deliveries due from late 2022 through until mid-2024

Condor Breaks The Mold With Its Colourful New Livery

German leisure carrier Condor has seemingly reinvented the aircraft livery. Those fed up with the euro white livery being adopted by so many carriers these days will rejoice as the German airline has instead opted for beach towel-like vertical stripes along the entire fuselage.

Condor clearly had to think about timing with the reveal of its new corporate identity. The airline's new livery is enough of a head-turner that it would've been categorized as an April Fool if it had been released on Friday. However, it seems as though the stripy paint scheme, available in five colors, is legit and here to stay.

Inspired by summer?

It seems as though Condor has taken inspiration from the summer holidays with its latest livery concept. According to the carrier, the stripy design set to adorn its aircraft is inspired by "parasols, bath towels, and beach chairs".

The livery will be applied to aircraft in five colors,

  • Yellow (Sunshine)
  • Red (Passion)
  • Blue (Sea)
  • Green (Island)
  • Beige (Beach)
According to Condor, these colors will stand for the diversity of the carrier's guests, employees, and opportunities to discover the world. The German leisure carrier isn't the only airline to update its livery with various colors. Icelandair's new paint scheme also comes with five variations, though the differences are much more subtle.

The livery will be rolled out across the fleet gradually. Around 80% of the airline's airplanes will have it by 2024. Condor officially launched the new design on an undelivered Airbus A330neo in Toulouse, though an older aircraft will be debuting the new livery tomorrow. D-AIAD is an eight-year-old Airbus A321. It will debut the livery tomorrow on a flight to Lanzarote with the yellow variation of the new livery. According to data from FlightRadar24.com, the jet flew out to Maastricht to be repainted on March 23rd.

Over the coming weeks, five more aircraft from the Airbus A320 and Boeing 757 families will be painted, presumably at least one in each color. The six aircraft are predominantly scheduled to fly to Mallorca, Greece, the Canary Islands, and Egypt.

Updating the entire brand

Though the new livery is the only thing revealed by Condor so far, the brand update won't stop there. The airline announced that everything from crew uniforms to boarding passes and even staff ID cards would find their way to the new branding.

However, it will take some time to reach this milestone. The airline revealed that nothing with the old design would go to waste. This means that existing stockpiles of items such as blank boarding passes, drink cups, and blankets will be depleted before the new design is rolled out. Condor believes that this is the most sustainable way to approach the redesign.

Why refresh the brand?

But why is Condor refreshing the brand at all? It is all to do with something that happened around two and a half years ago. When the Thomas Cook brand collapsed in late 2019, Condor was able to keep flying. The airline was quick to replace the Thomas Cook logo on the tail of its aircraft, though planes have essentially been flying with the Thomas Cook livery ever since. The new corporate identity is the latest move away from the airline's Thomas Cook history.

Commenting on the change, Condor's CEO, Ralf Teckentrup, remarked,

"Condor has undergone a transformation over the past two and a half years: From a subsidiary of a vertically integrated travel group to an independent airline that looks back proudly on its history and tradition, while at the same time embarking on the path to the future. We want to express this unmistakably through our corporate identity: Condor is vacation and Condor is unmistakable - like our new design, with which we are now launching into the future."

Airbus Updates No.3770

Condor Will Fly Its Ex-Etihad Airbus A330s On 15 Routes

Condor took delivery of an ex-Etihad Airways A330-200 on February 9th. It is one of four that it'll have, with the other three to be delivered soon.

The former Etihad A330s will have 262 or 256 seats, with the business class, in particular, being a significant upgrade for Condor's passengers. It'd be logical to assume the aircraft are to increase capacity, especially during the summer, aided by the withdrawal of Condor's B767-300ERs in 2020. However, the main reason seems to be to train 400+ crew members ahead of the carrier's incoming A330neos, with the first of 16 due later in 2022.

Condor's first ex-Etihad A330

Condor's first A330-200 was delivered to Etihad in January 2009 as A6-EYR, according to ch-aviation.com. The 13.24-year-old aircraft was stored in Abu Dhabi before being handled by Avolon, the lease management company, with the registration OE-ISR. It was subsequently stored at Ciudad Real and Düsseldorf, and the registration was changed to D-AIYC.

D-AIYC has been kept busy since February 12th with crew training. According to Flightradar, it has undertaken multiple short flights within Germany. On February 13th, for example, it completed 12 sectors. It left Frankfurt at 06:33 and arrived back at 12:38, presumably for a crew change. It then departed at 14:47 and came back at 20:56. When writing on February 15th, it has so far flown Frankfurt-Leipzig-Stuttgart-Leipzig, with more to come.

The A330 enters service on May 1st

The former Etihad A330s will begin revenue-generating flights on Sunday, May 1st, according to schedules submitted to OAG. Perhaps not surprisingly, the first flight will be between Frankfurt and Palma, just 778 miles (1,252km) apart. Mallorca is enormously popular with Germans, with 11 million seats for sale involving 25 German airports in 2019. In 2021

The flight will be DE1504, departing Germany at 13:35 and arriving in Palma at 15:35. Returning, it'll leave at 16:35 and arrive home at 18:45. Unless more flying is added, that'll be it until May 8th, when another round-trip to Palma will be conducted. Things start to increase from May 15th, with the A330 used to Seattle, followed by Punta Cana and Toronto the next day. The A330 will, of course, replace the B767-300ER.

15 A330 routes this year

While the schedules might not be finalized, Condor's A330s are currently down to serve 15 routes this year, as shown below. All but two will be from Frankfurt, with Frankfurt to Palma the only short-haul route. There are two one-stop services, and they'll operate triangularly: Frankfurt-Zanzibar-Mombasa-Frankfurt and Frankfurt-Puerto Plata-Santo Domingo-Frankfurt.

  • Frankfurt to Palma: 324 departures by the A330 this year; starting May 1st
  • Frankfurt to Seattle: 160; May 15th
  • Düsseldorf to Palma: 155; May 20th
  • Frankfurt to Punta Cana: 141; May 16th
  • Frankfurt to Toronto: 85; May 16th
  • Frankfurt to Cancun: 34; November 3rd
  • Frankfurt to Cape Town: 24; November 1st
  • Frankfurt to Malé: 23; November 2nd
  • Frankfurt to Mauritius: 20; October 30th
  • Frankfurt to Zanzibar and Mombasa: 17; November 4th
  • Frankfurt to Whitehorse: eight; July 26th
  • Frankfurt to Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo: six; November 2nd
  • Düsseldorf to JFK: four; September 8th

Condor Postpones Airbus A330 Launch To February 2022

German airline Condor will delay its Airbus A330 launch due to engine cowling corrosion. The aircraft was all set to fly on Condor’s Frankfurt-Tenerife route on December 15th until a technical inspection discovered the problem. The launch date has now been set back to February 2022.

Corrosion discovered on engine

Condor was due to launch A330 operations in mid-December but has now been forced to postpone until February 2022. The decision was made after a routine C-check on one of its leased A330-200s (registration: D-AIYC) uncovered a corrosion problem.

While a Condor spokesperson declined to comment on where the corrosion was located, aeroTELEGRAPH reports that the corrosion was found on the engine cowling. The aircraft was set to enter service on December 15th to conduct Flight DE1478 from Frankfurt to Tenerife. Condor used an A321 instead to serve this route.

A C-check inspection is usually scheduled every 18-24 months and takes around three weeks to complete. The A330 in question arrived in Dusseldorf on October 30th, giving lessor Avolon six weeks to complete the inspection before its scheduled launch date.

A former Etihad A330-200

The affected aircraft is an A330-200 currently registered as OE-ISR, although under Condor it will be re-registered as D-AIYC. The plane is approaching 13 years old and served under Etihad Airways for over ten years before it was withdrawn from use in 2019.

The plane has since been in storage for two years before it was flown to Dusseldorf in October. Condor is leasing the aircraft from Irish leasing company Avolon along with three other A330-200s, two of which will come from lessor Altavair Air France. Etihad Airways previously operated all four planes.

A330neo plans disrupted?

As part of its fleet renewal, Condor placed an order for 16 A330-900neos in July. To prepare its crew for A330neo operations, the airline leased four A330-200s which it planned to use until its new A330neos arrive.

Now that the airline has to delay A330 training, Condor’s plans to introduce the A330neo could also be affected. The first A330neo is expected in Autumn 2022 and Condor expects all 16 jets to arrive by January 2024.

It is unclear whether this corrosion issue will affect the delivery of Condor’s other three A330-200s.

Earlier this month, Ralf Teckentrup, CEO of Condor, said,

“In January there will be a second, in April or May numbers three and four will follow.”

Data from ch-aviation shows that the three other A330-200s (D-AIYA, D-AIYB and D-AIYD) were all withdrawn from use in 2019 by Etihad and have been in storage ever since.

Condor to add A330-200s

According to CH-Aviation, Condor will add two A330-200s to its fleet. A first one is expected to arrive before the end of this year, the second early next year. Both are reported to be former Etihad Airways-aircraft currently stored at Teruel.

The airline is adding the A330-200s to train cockpit and cabin-crew and prepare the airline for the arrival of its first A330-900 in the autumn of next year.

Condor has ordered seven A330-900s with Airbus directly and signed a lease-agreement for nine more. The airline will use the new Airbuses to replace its ageing fleet of fifteen B767-300ERs.

Airbus Updates No.3480

Germany's Condor orders 16 A330-900s

Condor (DE, Frankfurt Int'l) has ordered sixteen A330-900s to renew its widebody fleet, with the first aircraft expected to deliver from autumn 2022 and all sixteen by mid-2024.

A spokeswoman for the German leisure carrier told ch-aviation seven aircraft have been bought and financed while the other nine will be leased through several lessors.

The A330neo will be configured with a three-class layout, including business, premium economy, and economy cabins. Condor did not, however, provide any further details concerning exact seating capacity.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, Condor's current widebody fleet comprises fifteen B767-300(ER)s, which are 25.8 years old on average. The airline owns one of the aircraft and dry leases the remaining fourteen from Castlelake (eight), AerCap (three), GECAS (two), and Fortress Ireland Leasing (one). The airline also operates twelve A320-200s, ten A321-200s, and thirteen B757-300s.

Condor has identified fleet renewal as one of its most pressing issues when looking for a new investor following the collapse of former parent Thomas Cook Group in September 2019. Initially, the required capital injection was due to come from the Polish Aviation Group - PGL, the state-owned parent of LOT Polish Airlines, which agreed to buy Condor in January 2020. However, the deal subsequently fell through due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Eventually, UK private equity firm Attestor Capital signed a deal to acquire a 51% stake in Condor in May 2021. The new majority owner said it would spearhead a rapid fleet renewal drive for the airline.

Orders suggest that the line numbers for some of these aircraft are as follows:

AIr Asia Group l/n's 1966, 1971, 1972, 1967, 1970, 1973, 1976 ( all whitetail aircraft parked at toulouse)

Garuda l/n 1988
