Nigeria's Ibom Air launches A220 operations

Ibom Air (QI, Uyo) has begun operating revenue flights with its first A220-300 nearly half a year after the aircraft was delivered to Nigeria.

5N-CDA (msn 55250) debuted on the Uyo-Lagos route on April 29. Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows it has since been flying mainly between Nigeria's two main airports, Lagos and Abuja. The aircraft was delivered to Ibom Air directly from the manufacturer in early December 2023 and then stored at Uyo. It was activated for proving flights in late February and early March and then parked again.

Ibom Air has nine more A220-300s on firm order from Airbus Canada. The airline's fleet also comprises five CRJ900s.

Meanwhile, an E170 formerly operated by Tunisia's Jasmin Airways, 5N-CDP (msn 17000175), was ferried from Tunis to Lagos on April 6, already with the Nigerian registration. Local aviation sources indicate that the aircraft will be the second unit of the type for start-up Binani Air, joining also ex-Jasmin Airways sistership 5N-CCI (msn 17000169).

Ibom Air to wet-lease two A320-200s

Ibom Air (QI, Uyo) is planning to wet-lease two A320-200s from Lithuania's GetJet Airlines (GW, Vilnius) under a long-term contract.

LY-FAS (msn 4273) and LY-GYM (msn 2584) have both received Ibom Air's full livery but remain parked at Madrid Barajas for maintenance. GetJet told ch-aviation that it was still ironing out details with the Nigerian regional carrier and would not confirm the duration of the contract.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Ibom Air's fleet comprises five CRJ900s. The airline has a firm order for ten A220-300s with deliveries scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2023. The A220s will complement rather than replace the CRJs.

For its part, GetJet Airlines operates a single A319-100, six A320s, and three B737-800s. It also has a single B737-400 in storage.

Nigerian Ibom Air purchases ten Airbus A220 aircraft

Dubai, 16 November 2021 – Akwa Ibom state government owned airline in Nigeria, Ibom Air has signed a firm order for ten (10) A220s at the Dubai Airshow. The signing was done by Mfon Udom, the chief Executive Officer of Ibom Air, and Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International in the presence of the Akwa Ibom state Governor, Mr. Udom Gabriel Emmanuel.

Nigeria, with the largest population in Africa and the largest GDP, offers substantial growth potential in both domestic and regional travel. The A220 is therefore the ideal choice for a full range of services from very short-haul segments to intra-continental air routes.

“It gives me great pleasure to be here to announce Ibom Air’s order for 10 Airbus A220s”, said Mfon Udom, CEO of Ibom. “As an organization, we at Ibom Air are delighted with the steep growth we have achieved in just over two and a half years since we commenced operations, a growth chiefly driven by the massive embrace of our product and brand by the Nigerian domestic flying public. The addition of the A220 to our fleet will support our growth strategy and boost operational efficiency. It will also offer our passengers more space and enhanced cabin experience, as a value add for choosing us.”

“The A220 will allow us to increase the number of annual passengers through Akwa Ibom Airport, in Uyo, thus bringing more first-time visitors and business travelers to the region. These efforts reflect our commitment to supporting local commerce and making a positive contribution to socio-economic growth in Akwa Ibom state and Nigeria.” said the Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

Ibom Air currently operates two A220s. The airline flies to Uyo, Abuja, Calabar, Enugu, Lagos, and Port Harcourt. The purchase of the new A220s will enable the airline to continue on its growth path, offering new routes across not just Nigeria, but to the west African region and to Africa at large.

“We are thrilled to add Ibom Air as a new Airbus customer. The A220 is ideally suited to Nigeria's aviation needs, providing operational flexibility to grow the business by responding to demand for increased passenger services. Through this investment, Ibom Air is underscoring its ambition for regional and in due course, international connectivity and operational efficiency.”, said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International.

The A220 is the only aircraft purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market; it delivers unbeatable fuel efficiency and a wide body comfort experience in a single-aisle cabin, with extra wide seats, more leg room and onboard connectivity for entertainment and communication.

The A220 brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation geared turbofan engines. With a range of up to 3,450 nm (6,390 km), the A220 gives airlines added operational flexibility. The A220 delivers up to 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, and 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards. In addition, the aircraft noise footprint is reduced by 50% compared to previous generation aircraft - making the A220 a good neighbour around airports.

By the end of October 2021, the A220 had accumulated 643 firm orders.

Nigeria’s Ibom Air Takes Delivery Of Two Airbus A220s

Ibom Air has taken delivery of two Airbus A220 aircraft this month. These narrowbodies are on lease from EgyptAir and join the Nigerian airline’s five CRJ900 aircraft already in its fleet. The carrier is looking to grow with its state’s economy through the use of these planes.

Young aircraft for a young airline

The two aircraft were formerly operated by Air Sinai on the outfit’s covert Tel Aviv routes. These deliveries mark two years of services for Ibom Air. The Akwa Ibom state government commenced operations with the carrier on June 7th, 2019, following a flight from Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo to Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Uniquely, this operator was the first state airline to be founded in Nigeria.

Ibom Air took delivery of three CRJ900s ahead of the launch of flights, which, according to ch-aviation, started to arrive from February 2019. Two more units of the regional jet were also delivered last year.

Now, the airline is looking to scale things up with two units of the praised A220. This aircraft has been receiving several accolades across the globe by airlines for its modern approach to short and medium-haul operations. Its high fuel efficiency and comfort are two of the factors that have left airlines such as SWISS, airBaltic, Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, and Korean Air taking on the type.

A grand occasion

Umaru Fintiri, the governor of Adamawa state, was at the scene to mark the arrival of the new aircraft in Uyo. He shared that these moves are growing the overall aviation industry, and by extension, unlocking the economy of the country.

At the delivery press conference, Fintiri concluded the following:

“This is one airline that has been growing from number to number and from strength to strength.”

According to Radarbox.com, registration SU-GFD, the first A220-300 to arrive, left Cairo on June 5th to land in Lagos on the same day. Follow this, SU-GFA flew into the capital of Nigeria on June 11th. Both aircraft left for Uyo yesterday.

Nigeria's Ibom Air to add AirbusA220s for international growth

Ibom Air (QI, Uyo) will shortly add its first A220-300s ahead of plans to expand into the regional West African market, Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has revealed.

“We are actually planning a regional flight with Ibom Air, so we hope by next month we should take delivery of two brand new A220-300 series Airbuses, we want to use that for regional flights. I will get this to be discussed at the directors meeting of Ibom Air so that we can also consider Banjul,” he said in a statement following his meeting with the Gambian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohamadou Musa Njie.

Backed by the oil-rich state of Akwa Ibom located along Nigeria's Atlantic coast, Ibom Air operates a fleet of five CRJ900LRs (of which three are leased from Avmax Aircraft Leasing and two from Falko Regional Aircraft). Though based in Uyo, it offers regular flights between Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, and Calabar.
