Animawings cuts routes amid Airbus A220 delivery delays

Animawings (A2, Bucharest Henri Coanda) will cut two routes in its network during the 2025 summer season due to delays in the delivery of new A220-300s, the chief commercial officer Diana Dima told ch-aviation.

The Bucharest Henri Coanda-Oradea service will be suspended between June 11 and October 1, while the opening of a Bucharest-Dublin International route, planned for July 21, will be postponed indefinitely.

The airline had initially expected to add aircraft during the summer, but the delivery was postponed to September 2025. ch-aviation Commercial Aviation Aircraft Data data shows that Animawings is set to take two A220-300s under a dry-lease contract with Azorra, but the airline did not disclose whether both aircraft were planned for delivery during the 2025 summer season.

Animawings currently operates two A220-200s and three A320-200s. The company recently announced it would temporarily station one A320-200 at Timisoara and is considering opening more bases across Romania.

Animawings welcomes 1st Airbus A220-300

On 13 December 2024, Animawings took delivery of its first Airbus A220. The aircraft, YR-CHR (55316), arrived at Bucharest via Reykjavik a day later. Unfortunately, the aircraft is currently all white.

The Airbus is the first of two A220-300s the airline is planning to take delivery of this year. Both are leased from Azorra. The next fun is going to be YR-FUN (55321).

Earlier this year, Animawings announced a plan to expand the fleet to twelve aircraft by 2027. It plans to do so by adding the A220 as well as A320s. Before the delivery of the A220, the airline was operating a single A320.

Animawings has new owner and plans A220s/A320neos

On 15 February 2024, Aegean announced it has sold its 51% stake in Animawings to Romanian company Momento Group, which is now the sole owner of the airline. As a result of the sale of its shares, Animawings is also returning both its leased A320s to the Greek carrier. YR-AGA (3162) was returned on 27 December 2023 and is now flying again as SX-DGI, while YR-AGB (3316) is currently at Bucharest and being prepared for its return.

Once both aircraft are returned, Animawings will not have any plane in the fleet until March/April, when it is planning to take delivery of two leased Airbus A220-300s. It's currently unclear where the aircraft are sourced from.

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA - Romania's new airline Animawings has taken delivery of its first aircraft, an Airbus A320-200. The acquisition of the aircraft 13-year-old aircraft was carried out as part of the airline's certification and launch procedures.

The Airbus A320-200 with registration SX-DGI (MSN 3162) is configured to accommodate 174 economy class seats and was last in service for the Greek low-cost operator Aegean Airlines, which owns a 25% stake in the Romanian start-up.

The aircraft was ferried to the U.K. for repainting and preparation in mid-March and then ferried from the United Kingdom to Bucharest Otopeni on June 5.

It will shortly be re-registered as YR-AGA. The new charter operator still expects to run summer flights for Romanian tour operators to 19 tourist destinations in Greece, Turkey, Spain, Egypt, and Tunisia.

Animawings will launch with a single aircraft, but will add more capacity as and when the global demand for air travel returns to the pre-pandemic levels.
