China Airlines Airbus A321neo Conducts Maiden Flight Between Taiwan & Hong Kong

On March 27th, the all-new Airbus A321neo aircraft for China Airlines made its spectacular debut on its maiden flight from Taoyuan, Taiwan to Hong Kong. Upon receiving a water salute from the fire engines, flight CI 909 took off from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at 10:24 am. The flight is scheduled for two daily passenger or cargo-only return flights before the airline allows for the fleet to be progressively dispatched to other destinations.

To celebrate the new aircraft's introduction into commercial service, China Airlines prepared an aromatherapy gift pack that included a hand wash, lotion, and light perfume for passengers on the first return flight back to Taiwan. And for additional peace of mind, the same passengers were also given an in-flight protection pack containing a face mask and alcohol wipes during the flight.

The Airbus A321neo passenger aircraft will be the main feature on regional routes for the Taoyuan-based carrier and is configured for 180 seats including 12 in Premium Business Class and 168 in economy. The spacious and comfortable cabins are designed for contactless service and enhanced epidemic prevention.

Business travelers and tourists flying on this route will be welcomed by brand-new cabin facilities. This includes fully reclinable seats in Premium Business Class, with the latest in-flight entertainment system and also state-of-the-art seatback displays.

Before starting on regularly scheduled light services though, this particular Airbus A321neo will be scheduled to other destinations such as Manila, Palau, and Yangon. And then, starting from May 4th, the Airbus A321neo will be scheduled to operate on the prime Songshan-Tokyo (Haneda) route with services set for every Wednesday and Saturday.

Small, but green and mighty

The neo promises to be 15 to 20% more fuel-efficient than the previous generation of narrowbody aircraft. Its noise footprint and harmful emissions are already 75% smaller and 50% lower respectively. What's more, China Airlines has specifically arranged for the new Airbus A321neo aircraft to operate using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on the ferry flight back to Taiwan, as this helps to further reduce emissions by another hefty 8%.

These tangible improvements in fuel efficiency represent the airline's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions as well as protecting the environment.

And that's not all, as the Airbus A321neo was also chosen for its high capacity and extreme versatility in its cargo handling system, which allows for China Airlines to better focus on the current demand levels for air cargo. This means that whenever the aircraft is not being utilized for commercial passenger services, the airline can opt to have it used for cargo-only flights to better optimize profit returns - a general win-win situation for the carrier.

Possible new entries

The Skyteam member airline has 25 of the aircraft type in Airbus' order books to improve on its efforts to become a much more environmentally-friendly airline. Three have already been received and will soon be progressively introduced into service. Another seven more are expected to be delivered this year.

Qatar Airways denies owing $220mn to Airbus

Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) has rejected Airbus's claims that it owes the manufacturer USD220 million for the two A350-1000s it refused to take, Bloomberg has reported.

The Qatari carrier argued that it was not in breach of their contract by refusing to take delivery of the two aircraft. It also underlined that Airbus did not provide any justification for how it quantified the damages owed.

The airline refused to accept any more A350s after the Qatari Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) grounded 22 of its A350s due to fuselage paint degradation, which exposed anti-lightning mesh. As the two A350-1000s' contracted delivery dates came and went, Airbus cancelled the commitments and sued the airline for USD220 million in damages.

While the airline acknowledged the problem, it maintains that it does not represent an airworthiness issue. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) supports the manufacturer's position, although Qatar Airways argues that the regulator's scrutiny was not "extensive" enough. While other carriers have reported similar issues with their A350s, the QCAA remains the only regulator to have grounded the type.

Qatar Airways has sued Airbus for damages by now exceeding USD700 million in relation to the grounding. The escalating tussle between the two sides also saw the manufacturer unilaterally terminating Qatar Airways' order for fifty A321-200neo, a step that the airline is trying to invalidate in court. Airbus underlined that the order's cancellation would not allow it to accelerate deliveries for other carriers as "some customer attrition" was always factored into projected delivery timelines.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Qatar Airways operates thirty-four A350-900s and nineteen -1000s, and has a further twenty-one -1000s on firm order from Airbus.

Air Canada Announces the Acquisition of 26 Airbus A321neo Extra-Long Range Aircraft

MONTREALMarch 22, 2022 /CNW Telbec/ - Air Canada today announced it is acquiring 26 extra-long range (XLR) versions of the Airbus A321neo aircraft. The aircraft has sufficient range to serve all North American and select transatlantic markets, while offering customers added comfort and improving the carrier's fuel efficiency to advance its environmental programs.

Air Canada Announces the Acquisition of 26 Airbus A321neo Extra-Long Range Aircraft (CNW Group/Air Canada)

Deliveries are to begin in the first quarter of 2024 with the final aircraft to arrive in the first quarter of 2027. Fifteen of the aircraft will be leased from Air Lease Corporation, five will be leased from AerCap and six are being acquired under a purchase agreement with Airbus S.A.S. that includes purchase rights to acquire an additional 14 of the aircraft between 2027 and 2030.

"Air Canada is committed to further strengthen its market-leading position, especially through investments in new technology. The acquisition of the state-of-the-art Airbus A321XLR is an important element of this strategy and will drive our core priorities of elevating the customer experience, advancing our environmental goals, network expansion and increasing our overall cost efficiency. This order also shows that Air Canada is emerging strongly from the pandemic and is ideally positioned to grow, compete and thrive in a reshaped global aviation industry," said Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada.

Air Canada's A321XLRs will accommodate 182 passengers in a configuration of 14 lie flat Air Canada Signature Class seats and 168 Economy Class seats. Among the aircraft's amenities, customers will enjoy next generation seatback entertainment, access to inflight Wifi and a spacious cabin design featuring generous overhead baggage storage bins. With a range of approximately 8,700 kilometres and an ability to fly up to 11 hours, the A321XLR can operate non-stop anywhere across North America and, pending Transport Canada approval for overseas operations, also fly transatlantic missions, bolstering the carrier's hubs and network. Air Canada is in the process of selecting an engine manufacturer for its A321XLR aircraft.

GHG reductions

The A321XLR will be used both for incremental growth of Air Canada's fleet and to replace older, less-efficient aircraft expected to exit the fleet. As a result, the new aircraft will yield significant operational cost savings and environmental benefits. Air Canada projects it will have up to 17 per cent lower fuel burn per seat than the previous generation narrow-body on a typical transcontinental flight and a projected reduction of up to 23 per cent versus previous generation wide-body aircraft on a transatlantic flight. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to help Air Canada fulfill its environmental commitments, which include the achievement of net carbon neutrality by 2050. The A321XLR is also expected to be quieter for passengers and airports than the aircraft being replaced with the A321XLR.

As of December 31, 2021, Air Canada had a combined 214 aircraft in its mainline and Air Canada Rouge fleets, including 136 single-aisle, narrow-body aircraft.

Iceland's PLAY takes first A320neo, to take A321neo(LR)

PLAY (Iceland) (OG, Reykjavik Keflavik) took delivery of its first A320-200N on March 1, 2022, and is preparing to add another new variant - the A321-200NX(LR) - by May 2022.

TF-PPA (msn 9357) was ferried from Ostrava to Reykjavik Keflavik on March 2 and began revenue operations on March 13 with the first flight being from Reykjavik Keflavik to Berlin Brandenburg Int'l, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. The aircraft owned by CALC is 1.9 years old, although it has not been commercially operated thus far as it was originally built for SaudiGulf Airlines (SGQ, Dammam) and was not taken up by the carrier.

The aircraft joins three A321-200Ns in PLAY's fleet.

The Icelandic low-cost carrier said it was planning to add two more Airbus narrowbodies in April and May 2022 - one A321-200NX(LR) and one more A320-200N. The A320neo will be TF-PPB (msn 10134), while the identity of the A321neo(LR) is not yet known. The LCC has no plans to increase its fleet beyond six aircraft for summer 2022 as it prefers a gradual ramp-up of its operations.
