Avianca to lease former Viva Air Airbus A320neos

On 26 June 2023, the Aviation Capital Group announced it has reached an agreement with Avianca for the lease of former Viva Air Airbus A320neos. In total, the deal is for eight A320neos and all will be delivered this year.

Colombian low-cost carrier Viva Air suspended all operations on 27 February 2023 due to financial struggles and was, unfortunately, unable to restart operations.

According to our information the eight aircraft involved are:

  • HK-5352 (10136), currently stored at Medellín
  • HK-5353 (10172), currently stored at Bogota
  • HK-5360 (10342), currently stored at Medellín
  • HK-5361 (10313), currently stored at Bogota
  • HK-5365 (10459), currently stored at Medellín
  • HK-5366 (10482), currently stored at Medellín
  • HK-5367 (10487), currently stored at Medellín
  • HK-5368 (10409), currently stored at Medellín

With the extra A320neos, Avianca is jumping in the capacity-gap left behind by the demise of Viva Air. Currently, the airline's fleet consists of nine A319s, 64 A320s, 21 A320neos, and thirteen Boeing B787-8s.

Cyprus Airways leases two A220-300s from ALC

Cyprus Airways (CY, Larnaca) has signed a lease contract with Air Lease Corporation for two A220-300s during the ongoing 2023 Paris Air Show.

Both aircraft are scheduled to deliver to the Cypriot carrier by the end of the month and will be in service already for this summer season. They will come from ALC's existing order book.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Cyprus Airways operates two A320-200s, wet-leasing a third unit of the type from Nordica (ND, Tallinn Lennart Meri). The first of its two A220s, C-FBPZ (msn 55208), is undergoing final completion works at Montréal Mirabel airport and will become 5B-DEA. The other is 5B-DEB (msn 55203). Both were originally destined for Air Sénégal (HC, Dakar Blaise Diagne International) but ultimately not taken up.

"The A220 will provide a new experience to our guests and marks our commitment towards sustainability. The A220 offers the newest technology on the market and gives great savings in fuel burn and direct operating cost," Chief Executive Paul Sies said.

ALC owns four more A220-300s already in service (all of the with ITA Airways (AZ, Rome Fiumicino)) and has firm orders for a further 63 as well as seven A220-100s, the ch-aviation fleets ownership module highlights.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi to move to A321ceo for engine "derisking"

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi (5W, Abu Dhabi International) will replace "most" of its current A321-200NX with A321-200s to minimise any potential issues Pratt & Whitney PW1133G-JM Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines may have in the Middle East, Wizz Air Holdings Chief Executive József Váradi said during the group's annual investor call.

"The GTF has performance problems mainly in a hot temperature, severe operating environment like the Middle East. And as a result, we decided that most of the Wizz Air Abu Dhabi fleet will get replaced with classic A321s. So we are derisking the GTF performance issues with that. Now that doesn't mean that the International Aero Engines V2500 engine operates the same way in Abu Dhabi as in Europe, which is considered to be a benign environment, but it means that it is a mature technology. So it is a lot less subject to unexpected breakdowns," Váradi said.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows the Hungarian LCC's Emirati joint venture currently operates eight A321-200NX and a single A321-200, which it added from Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) at the end of May 2023.

The group plans to increase its Abu Dhabi International-based fleet to 15 aircraft in the near term.

Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer Ian O. Malin underlined that while the UAE is an important market for the group, in terms of the fleet size, it has a limited share in the greater scheme of things.

Váradi conceded that while the PW1133 engines has had teething problems, they are "manageable" on a group level.

"Maybe the manufacturers were too eager to come to market, and they should have done more testing and more maturity themselves. They kind of outsourced all these diseases to the industry, but that's what it is... In terms of GTF operation in Europe, I think it's not perfect, but it is manageable. We are probably the one airline in the world that has not been grounding aircraft because of engines. I think everyone has started grounding because of running out of spares, but we have stocked up on spares on the one hand. And I think the way we have been allocating and operating the engines, maybe with some luck, we have been able to maintain operational integrity without grounding aircraft, and I hope we can maintain it that way," the CEO said.

The airline's European AOCs in Hungary, Malta, and the United Kingdom operate eighty A321-200NX with PW1133 GTF engines and six A320-200Ns with PW1127 powerplants, as well as a total of eighty-six A320ceo (A320-200s and A321-200s) with IAE V2500 engines.

Volaris orders 25 Airbus A321neos

Paris – Mexican ultra-low-cost airline and all-Airbus operator Volaris has disclosed 25 A321neo from a purchase agreement signed in October 2022. These aircraft bring Volaris total backlog to 143 A320neo Family aircraft, which will support the airline’s continuous fleet renewal and expansion, powered by Pratt & Whitney engines.

“These A321neos will support our long-term business viability and sustainability strategy, while moving us closer to operating an all-NEO fleet by 2028. Our 143 aircraft backlog demonstrates Volaris financial strength and will guarantee our growth in the Mexican market as well as in routes to the United States and Central America," said Enrique Beltranena, Volaris President and Chief Executive Officer.

“The A321neo’s superior performance and efficiency will continue to drive Volaris’ network growth. As the fleet grows the airline will be well positioned to meet future demand, especially in the Mexican leisure market. We look forward to working closely with Volaris as it continues to spread its wings," said Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International.

The A321neo is the largest-fuselage member of Airbus’ best-selling single-aisle A320 Family. The A321neo allows operators to cover the entire market, while offering the lowest seat-mile cost of any single-aisle available.

Volaris became an Airbus customer in 2006, and since then the airline has ordered 206 A320 Family aircraft, including more than 170 A320neo Family aircraft. Volaris is the largest A320neo Family operator in Latin America.

Airbus has sold over 1,150 aircraft in Latin America and the Caribbean. More than 750 are in operation throughout the region, with another 500 in the order backlog, representing a market share of nearly 60% of in-service passenger aircraft. Since 1994, Airbus has secured 75% of net orders in the region.

Air India firms up order for 250 Airbus aircraft, selects new services

  • A350 aircraft of choice for Air India’s renaissance in long haul travel

  • A320 Family to be the cornerstone of Air India’s domestic and regional fleet

  • IMS services to optimise Air India fleet operational performance

  • Skywise: Air India to boost its digital transformation as launch customer for Core X3

Paris -  Air India has firmed up its order for 250 Airbus aircraft and selected an Airbus maintenance and digital package to power the airline’s transformation and growth strategy.

The aircraft order includes 140 A320neo and 70 A321neo single-aisle aircraft as well as 34 A350-1000 and six A350-900 wide-body jets. The airline had signed a Letter of Intent to acquire these aircraft in February 2023.

Air India will also be counting on Airbus to help ensure the highest level of fleet availability with the Integrated Materials Solutions (IMS) from Satair, an Airbus company. The Airbus-powered maintenance solution will ensure that every time the airline needs a rotable or a consumable part, it is readily available and stocks are automatically replenished. And in its transformation and digitalisation journey, Air India will be the launch customer for Airbus’ Skywise Core X3, the latest and most advanced aviation analytics platform. This once again demonstrates the avant-garde cooperation between Airbus and Air India.

The purchase agreements for the aircraft as well as the Letters of Intent for maintenance and digital services were signed in the presence of N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD of Air India, Guillaume Faury, Airbus CEO, Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International, and Rémi Maillard, President and Managing Director, Airbus India and South Asia at the Paris Air Show 2023.

Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD, Air India, said: “Our ambitious fleet renewal and expansion programme will see Air India operate the most advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft across our route network within five years. We are proud to be working with all our partners, including Airbus, in this journey to rebuild a global airline which reflects India taking a more confident posture around the world.”

"We are excited to be a key partner in the renaissance of the Flying Maharaja. Under the leadership of the Tata Group and a focussed new management, this is one of the most ambitious projects in the airline business today. We are proud that the efficiencies, comfort and range capability offered by our latest generation aircraft will contribute to the process, as Air India reclaims its rightful position as a world-class premium carrier. The Airbus services package is a perfect future-oriented choice that will form a core element of Air India’s transformation,” said Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus.

The historic Air India order marks the entry into service of the A350 in India, the world’s fastest growing aviation market. The all-new, long-range aircraft will help unlock the pent-up potential of India’s long-haul market, its technology, reach and second-to-none comfort enabling new routes and passenger experience with better economics and enhanced sustainability. Alongside the A350s, the A320 Family fleets will be the efficient, versatile asset to continue democratising and decarbonising air travel in India – from domestic, regional, up to international levels. Deliveries are set to commence with the first A350-900 before the end of 2023.

The A350 is the world’s most modern and efficient wide-body aircraft in the 300-410 seater category. The A350’s clean sheet design includes state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics delivering unmatched standards of efficiency and comfort. Its new generation engines and use of lightweight materials delivers a 25 percent advantage in fuel burn, operating costs and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, compared to previous generation competitor aircraft.

The aircraft offers a 3-class configuration cabin that is the quietest of any twin-aisle and offers passengers and crew the most modern in-flight products for the most comfortable long-range flying experience.

The A321neo is the longest-fuselage member of Airbus’ best-selling, single-aisle A320 Family, comfortably seating 180 to 220 passengers in a typical two-class layout, and as many as 244 in a higher-density arrangement. The A320neo has already set the standards as the world’s most comfortable short-to-medium-haul aircraft that typically accommodates from 140 to 170 passengers, with a maximum capacity of up to 180 travellers. Its environmental performance allows for at least 20 per cent less fuel burn and CO2 emissions as well as 50 per cent noise footprint reduction, compared to previous generation aircraft.
