BOC Aviation Orders 80 More A320s Bringing Total Airbus Order To 453 Aircraft

Aircraft leasing firm, BOC Aviation, has announced that it has signed a firm order for 80 Airbus A320neo family jets. The order will comprise 10 A321XLR, 50 A321neo, and 20 A320neo. Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled between 2027 and 2029.

Speaking about the deal on Monday, Robert Martin, BOC Aviation Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, noted,

“We are proud to continue our long-standing relationship with Airbus, with whom we have partnered for more than 26 years. This is the largest single order that we have ever placed and it will bring our total Airbus aircraft purchased since inception to 546. It underscores our continued confidence in the A320neo family for its reliability and operational efficiency and reflects the popularity of the aircraft amongst our airline customers. We look forward to continuously providing our customers with such fuel-efficient and technologically advanced aircraft solutions.”

Why Airbus?

The A320neo is an upgrade of Airbus’ popular narrowbody series and has totaled over 7,900 orders from over 120 customers since its launch. Over 2,100 A320neo family aircraft have been delivered since its entry into service six years ago.

The jet has been a popular choice with carriers thanks to its new generation engines and “Sharklets,” which can deliver 20% fuel and CO2 savings, with an additional 50% noise reduction. Airbus reports that the jets have contributed to saving 10 million tons of CO2 since 2016. The A321XLR provides a range up to 4,700NM, with a flight time of 11 hours.

BOC Aviation’s A320neos have gone on to serve in the fleets of various carriers, including MEAIndiGo, and Wizz Air, with the aircraft lessor having over 100 of the type in its catalog.

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, added,

“Airbus thanks BOC Aviation for its unwavering trust and endorsement of the A320neo Family with its single largest order ever placed. This significant long term order for 80 additional aircraft is a great testimony of the sustained value of our Single Aisle products by one of the world’s leading lessors, BOC Aviation. We salute its vision and foresight in securing future delivery positions of these most desirable assets in the single aisle segment now and in the longer run.”

Growth for BOC Aviation

While certain parts of the aviation sector have struggled throughout the pandemic, BOC Aviation has thrived; at one point the company is reported to have leased 99% of its inventory. BOC Aviation notably saw a 10% year-on-year increase in earnings through 2021, posting a net profit of $561 million for the full year ended 31 December 2021. The aircraft lessor has moved to expand its fleet further, with 530 aircraft in its catalog for Q1 of 2022.

Its current Airbus portfolio as of April 2022 comprises 117 A320ceo, 125 A320neo, 17 A330, and 9 A350
