Airbus Updates No.200

Incident: Spanair A320 near Milan on Apr 24th 2011, engine shut down in flight

A Spanair Airbus A320-200, registration EC-KOX performing flight JK-81 from Barcelona,SP (Spain) to Venice (Italy), was enroute at FL300 about 90nm south of Milan Malpensa (Italy) when the crew needed to shut the left hand engine (V2527) down. The aircraft diverted to Milan's Malpensa Airport for a safe landing about 20 minutes later.

A replacement Airbus A320-200 registration EC-JJD reached Venice with a delay of 6 hours.

EC-KOX's engine #1 is going to be replaced.

Incident: BMI A319 at Birmingham on Apr 25th 2011, hydraulic leak

A BMI Airbus A319-100 on behalf of Lufthansa, registration G-DBCD performing flight LH-954/BD-954 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Birmingham,EN (UK), was on final approach to Birmingham's runway 33 when the crew reported a hydraulic leak. The crew continued for a safe landing on runway 33.

The airport reported, runway 33 needed to be closed for 55 minutes as a result.

Three other aircraft already on approach to Birmingham at that time were pulled off the approach, entered holdings and subsequently diverted to East Midlands, two other aircraft diverted to East Midlands as well. All diverted aircraft completed their flights once Birmingham's runway opened again.


Incident: Delta A320 at Salt Lake City on Apr 25th 2011, lightning strike

A Delta Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration N317US performing flight DL-1158 from Seattle,WA to Salt Lake City,UT (USA), was on approach to Salt Lake City's runway 16R when the airplane experienced a lightning strike. The crew continued for a safe landing on runway 16R about 7 minutes later.

The FAA reported the aircraft received (unknown) damage.

Incident: Delta A319 at Salt Lake City on Apr 25th 2011, bird strike

A Delta Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration N357NB performing flight DL-2206 from Chicago O'Hare,IL to Salt Lake City,UT (USA), was on final approach to runway 34L when the aircraft ingested a bird into the left hand engine (CFM56). The crew continued for a safe landing on runway 34L.

The FAA reported the aircraft received minor damage.

Incident: Jet Airways A332 near Gander on Apr 23rd 2011, medical emergency

A Jet Airways Airbus A330-200, registration VT-JWK performing flight 9W-227 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Brussels (Belgium) with 215 people on board, was enroute at FL390 about 90nm southeast of Gander,NL (Canada) when the crew decided to divert to Gander due to a male passenger who had fallen critically ill. The crew reported the man had suffered from an infection and now had difficulty breathing, a doctor was on board and also recommended diversion. The airplane landed safely on Gander's runway 31 about 20 minutes later. The passenger was taken to a local hospital.

The patient had to be pronounced dead a short time after arrival in the hospital. An autopsy is going to identify the cause of the illness and death.
