Airbus Updates No.4455

Aegean Airlines adds eight more A321neo to order

Aegean Airlines (A3, Athens) has announced that it has added eight more A321-200NX aircraft to its order book, amending it for the third time and confirming that the total number in its A320/A321neo order will reach fifty-eight.

According to the Greek carrier, its order now consists of twenty-one A320-200Ns, thirty-three A321-200NX, and four A321-200NX(LR)s. Of the 58 aircraft committed in total, 34 have already been delivered, leaving another 24 scheduled for delivery. Data from the Airbus orderbook shows that 12 (one A320-200N and eleven A321-200N) are currently listed as direct, disclosed orders placed with the manufacturer.

"The expansion of our investment plan with the additional order of eight new Airbus A321neo aircraft is essential for achieving our growth objectives and further enhancing the competitiveness of our operations. It is also clear that we have a strong preference for the larger-capacity and extended-range version of the A321neo type, which will soon represent two-thirds of our Airbus fleet,” CEO Dimitris Gerogiannis said in a statement.

Currently, five of the carrier's twenty A320-200Ns and six of the fourteen A321-200NX are inactive. Aegean said in the annual report that in the second half of 2024, between eight and 10 aircraft were grounded at any given time due to Pratt & Whitney engine issues.

"[The groundings] restricted capacity growth particularly during the peak season, reduced the cost benefits from their use and created the need for additional leases. The compensation received by the company from the manufacturers is significant but not sufficient to offset all effects from the groundings," the airline added.

Aegean Airlines initially placed the order in 2018 and the first deliveries started in 2020. ch-aviation fleets shows the airline’s in-house fleet currently comprises twenty-eight A320-200s, twenty A320-200Ns, four A321-200s, and fourteen A321-200NX. It also wet-leases capacity (three ATR42-600s, twelve ATR72-600s, and one DHC-8-100) from its subsidiary Olympic Air on certain domestic routes.

Air Hong Kong delays final A300-600F retirements

Air Hong Kong (LD, Hong Kong International) is holding onto its remaining A300-600Fs for longer than expected, retiring them from the fleet in 2025 rather than in 2024 as previously planned. The delay, first reported by Cargo Facts, was revealed in updated fleet data supplied by Cathay Pacific Group, Air Hong Kong's parent entity, when announcing its latest financial results last week.

ADS-B flight tracking data shows the three aircraft, B-LDB (msn 856), B-LDG (msn 870), and B-LDH (msn 871), continue to operate for Air Hong Kong on a daily basis. However, the cargo carrier did retire four A300-600Fs in 2024 and one in 2023. Air Hong Kong told ch-aviation it intends to return the remaining A300 freighters this year. The airline also continues to operate two A330-200Fs and ten A330-300(P2F)s. All of the aircraft, including the remaining A300 freighters, operate for DHL Express.

DHL Express's Malcolm Macbeth, SVP global air fleet management, told Cargo Facts that it was swapping out its Asia-based A300 freighters for A330-300P2Fs. The smaller freighters will go to Europe where maintenance support is easier. However, delays at conversion facilities may be slowing down this plan. Air Hong Kong also told ch-aviation that its A300 freighters would be replaced by A330 freighters. The A300-600F's are expected to be transferred to DHL's European network operating out of Leipzig and East Midlands Airport.

Air India Express schedules A321neo debut for early 2Q25

Air India Express (IX, Delhi International) is set to commence scheduled operations with A321-200N aircraft on April 15, 2025, the ch-aviation schedules module reveals. The low-cost carrier will start operating the type on the Delhi International-Bengaluru International and Delhi-Srinagar routes.

The company will also deploy the aircraft on services from Delhi to Ayodhya International and Jaipur starting on April 20.

Air India Express' A321-200N will feature 180 seats in economy and 12 in business class. The carrier does not have an outstanding order for the type. Parent Air India currently operates two A321-200Ns, VT-RTC (msn 11156) and VT-RTD (msn 11183), equipped with 192 seats in dual-class configuration. The carrier also has a firm order for another 210 units of the type directly from Airbus.

It is currently unknown if Air India Express will receive the aircraft from the fleet of Air India or if they come from its parent's orderbook.

ch-aviation reached out Air India Express for comment.

Air India Express operates twenty-four A320-200s, twelve A320-200Ns, forty-one B737-8s, and twenty-six B737-800s. It is expecting to add fifty B737-10s and ninety-nine B737-8s.

Plagued with supply chain issues

Meanwhile, Air India has been struggling to expand and modernise its aircraft fleet due to the supply chain problems that are plaguing the industry. Speaking at Skift India Forum, an industry event, the flag carrier's chief executive, Campbell Wilson, said that the company is seeing constraints in the supply of engines, fuselages, and first and business class seats.

Wilson noted that delivery delays of factory-new jets from Airbus and Boeing will hamper the airline's growth for four or five more years. "There is not a lot we can do. We are victims of circumstance, as is every other airline," he added.

Due to these issues, Air India cannot expand its network as fast as it initially anticipated. The carrier is keeping older aircraft in the fleet for longer, so its maintenance costs have risen. Increasing the network and fleet by leasing aircraft has also become more difficult as competitors have scrambled to source additional capacities, Wilson said.

Air India is reluctant to exercise its options for purchasing additional Boeing jets due to problems at the manufacturer and production caps set by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to the ch-aviation fleets module, Air India has 374 aircraft on order. Air India is set to receive ninety A320-200Ns, 210 A321-200NX, twenty-five A350-1000s, nineteen A350-900s, ten B777-9s, and twenty B787-9s.

Airbus Updates No.4452

EVA Air confirms six A350-1000s, adds three A321neo

EVA Air (BR, Taipei Taoyuan) has converted options for six A350-1000s held as a part of its 2024 order for 18 units of the type, and added three new A321-200neo to its order directly from Airbus.

The Taiwanese carrier said in a stock market filing that the agreed purchase price was up to USD436 million for each A350 and up to USD150 million for each A321neo. The total value of the deal is up to USD3.1 billion.

EVA Air currently expects the deliveries of the A350s to commence in the first quarter of 2027, with a slight delay compared to the original plan. The newly confirmed options are for deliveries in 2031 and later. Its current widebody fleet comprises nine A330-300s, thirty-three B777-300ERs, five B787-9s, and twelve B787-10s. Besides the A350s, it also has unfilled orders for eight more B787-9s and five -10s.

In turn, the A321neo are not due to enter into service before 2029. The three new orders increase the total commitment for the type to 18 aircraft and will extend the deliveries through 2032. They will replace the current narrowbody fleet comprising seventeen A321-200s.

The new orders follow the second year in a row of stellar profits. For 2024, the Taiwanese airline posted a net profit of NTD30.4 billion Taiwanese new dollars (USD922 million) on a consolidated basis, up 38% over the already record-high 2023 result.

Airbus Updates No.4447

Supply chain issues delay Airbus A350F EIS to 2027

Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) may experience delays in the introduction of the A350F due to supply chain problems, Reuters reported citing industry sources. The rollout of new freighter aircraft could be delayed by up to a year from the current schedule, which assumes a 2026 entry into service.

The manufacturer has not publicly commented on possible issues in the introduction and production of the A350F. The manufacturer is expected to announce updates on the issue on February 20, 2025, when it publishes its annual results.

Airbus is struggling to increase the production rate of the A350 due to issues with Spirit AeroSystems, a major US supplier that has been experiencing issues with quality control. Industry sources have said that Spirit AeroSystems cannot deliver a sufficient number of fuselage parts for the A350F, which is the reason for the potential late rollout of the freighter.

The issues will also likely prevent Airbus from ramping up its current production rate of passenger A350s, which is six aircraft per month.

At least nine airlines have ordered the A350F, the ch-aviation fleets module shows. Since Airbus announced the A350F programme in 2021, it has received orders for 66 airframes. Etihad Airways and Starlux Airlines are the biggest customers of the type, each ordering ten aircraft. Future operators also include Air France, CMA CGM Air Cargo, Cathay Pacific, Martinair (Netherlands), Silk Way West Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Turkish Airlines, while Air Lease Corporation has ordered seven aircraft and three were ordered by (an) undisclosed customer(s).

Air Greenland to take delivery of first A320neo by YE27

Air Greenland (GL, Nuuk) has signed a dry-lease agreement with Carlyle Aviation Partners for one A320-200N, the airline announced on its website. Delivery is expected in December 2026 with entry into passenger service planned for spring 2027.

The Greenlandic company intends to utilise the A320neo on the route between new Ilulissat airport, due to open by the end of 2026, and Copenhagen Kastrup, complementing the service of the carrier's bigger A330-800N.

"The delivery time for new Airbus aircraft is currently six to seven years, so we have chosen to lease the aircraft to be ready when the new international airport in Ilulissat opens and to gain financial flexibility as the route is still new," said Jacob Nitter Sørensen, chief executive of Air Greenland.

The lease agreement with Carlyle runs for six years, but the airline will have an option to extend it further into the future. The Nuuk-based carrier revealed that the cockpit of the A320neo will be crewed mostly by A330neo pilots thanks to the commonalities between the two aircraft types.

Air Greenland also plans to train some of its De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Dash 8 pilots for the A320neo operations. It further disclosed that maintenance on the new aircraft will be conducted in Copenhagen by SAS Scandinavian Airlines where its A330 is also being serviced.

Air Greenland currently operates ten aircraft, according to the ch-aviation fleets module. The bulk of its fleet consists of seven DHC-8-Q200s and it also has one DHC-8-200 and one Hawker 800XP(2). The Greenlandic airline recently added the A330neo to its fleet, replacing a legacy A330-200. During the summer of 2025, it will also wet-lease a B737-800 from Airseven. Air Greenland's domestic fleet includes H125, H155, and H225 Airbus Helicopters as well.

Qanot Sharq to lease five long-range A321neo

Qanot Sharq (HH, Tashkent International) has signed a dry-lease contract for five extended-range A321-200neo, including two A321-200NX(LR)s and three A321-200NY(XLR)s, from Air Lease Corporation.

The aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027, and will come from the lessor's existing orderbook with Airbus. The lessor has unfilled orders for twenty-two A321-200NX(LR)s and thirty A321-200NY(XLR)s.

Qanot Sharq, Uzbekistan's second-largest airline, currently operates two A320-200s, two A321-200NX, and two A330-200s. All six aircraft are dry-leased from Air Lease Corporation. The carrier also wet-leases one more A330-200 from Southwind Airlines. The airline did not disclose any specific plans for the newly contracted extended-range A321neo.
