Airbus Has Orders Worth USD$35 Bln From India

European plane maker Airbus has orders worth USD$35 billion from India, a senior company executive said on Friday, with recent record order wins in the fast-growing market accounting for more than half of the total orders.
Indian carriers are rapidly expanding their operations as an economy growing at nearly 9 percent spurs business travel and the middle class, long accustomed to rail travel, increasingly takes to the air.
Airbus has an order backlog of more than 400 planes to be delivered to Indian carriers over the next 15 years, Joost Van Der Heijden, Airbus's head of airline marketing for Africa, India, South East Asia and Japan, told reporters in Mumbai.
He said India is the seventh-largest market for Airbus but expected it to climb in coming years.
"India will move up with traffic growth higher than anywhere in the world," Heijden said.
"The Indian fleet will certainly more than double and could even triple in the coming years," he said on the sidelines of an industry conference.
Indian budget carriers Indigo and GoAir last month placed orders worth nearly USD$23 billion in total with Airbus.
Rival Boeing has existing orders of about USD$15 billion with airlines in India, the senior official in its Indian unit said on Thursday.
Boeing expects India's commercial plane market to reach USD$150 billion over the next 20 years, as a burgeoning middle class is expected to drive demand in Asia's third-largest economy.

Airbus and German Aerospace Centre (DLR) perform research tests for fuel cell powered autonomous taxiing

 

Results feed aviation industries’ general understanding of technology and its potential

Airbus is strongly engaged in developing greener aircraft and increasing the eco-efficiency of its modern product line. One of the most promising contributors for emission free ground operation is fuel cell technology. Together with its research partner DLR, Airbus is examining the potential of this technology, its integration into the aircraft and has already successfully performed the first flight test on a civil transport aircraft in 2008, where a fuel cell system provided power for the aircraft’s back-up systems.

In order to gain more details on the potential of fuel cell technology as supply for electric power in aircraft ground operation, a DLR designed technology demonstrator has been installed in the DLR owned A320 fuel cell test aircraft at the Airbus site in Hamburg. The technology demonstrator consists of a fuel cell powering an electric motor which drives the nose landing gear wheels allowing the aircraft to taxi autonomously. The objective of these tests is to further validate the potential of the integrated fuel cell technology for powering future aircraft functionalities such as autonomous taxiing. The data collected in the tests will be analysed by Airbus and the DLR to further develop the overall integration of this technology and potential further optimisation possibilities.

Within the joint R&T activities, Airbus is in charge of the overall aircraft system architecture and technology integration into the aircraft, whereas the DLR is driving some of the basic research activities for aerospace fuel cell technology. The landing gear itself with the integrated DLR-designed fuel cell powered motor is provided by Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg.

Airbus considers fuel cell technology as key contributor to the ACARE 2020 goals, which foresee the reduction of CO2 emissions by 50%, NOx emissions by 80% and noise by 50%. Consequently Airbus is pursuing engagement of industrial research partners in that field. In addition Airbus is strongly engaging in implementing and testing bio-fuel technology and actively supports the installation of local bio-fuel value-chains around the world. With regard to wider initiatives such as Air Traffic Management (ATM), Airbus co-operates with all the protagonists to deliver the best solutions for airlines and the environment. Airbus has a leading role in the SESAR programme to improve the efficiency of European ATM and works with teams involved in the NEXT GEN project designed to do the same for US ATM.

The month in review: June 2011

 

Airbus logged orders for 601 aircraft in an exceptional month of June – with many of these bookings announced during the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget Airport, where the company was on centre stage throughout this week-long gathering of the world’s aerospace industry.

The volume brought 2011 year-to-date net orders to 640, and boosted Airbus’ backlog to 3,934 aircraft – marking a record level, and representing nearly eight years of production at current output rates.

Leading this volume of new business was the A320neo (new engine option) – paced by the 200-aircraft acquisition by AirAsia, along with IndiGo’s firming up of its order for 150 of these eco-efficient jetliners. The landmark Air Asia booking makes this customer – including its AirAsia X operation – the largest Airbus customer in terms of aircraft, with an acquisition total of 413 jetliners.

The 188 other A320neo orders in June were from GoAir (for 72 aircraft), GE Capital Aviation Services (60 jetliners ordered), SAS (with bookings for 30), TransAsia Airways (for six) and LAN Airlines (ordering 20). The current A320 Family product line also demonstrated its continued value with contracts for a total of 42 from IndiGo, Cebu Pacific Air, GE Capital Aviation Services, Air Lease Corporation and StarFlyer.

Airbus also was active with its widebody aircraft families, as a total of 13 orders for the A330 were received from Saudi Arabian Airlines, Air Lease Corporation, and CIT Leasing; while a repeat A350 XWB order was received from ALAFCO for six additional A350-900s.

The A380 order book also was enlarged with Skymark Airlines of Japan’s contract for two more of these 21st century Airbus flagships.

June was a busy month for deliveries as well, with a total of 41 jetliners provided to customers – composed of 32 A320 Family aircraft, seven A330s (including another A330-200F freighter to Turkish Airlines and the first direct delivery of an A330-300 to Aeroflot), and the handover of one A380 each to Singapore Airlines and Air France. 

With this activity, Airbus’ 2011 year-to-date deliveries at the end of June totaled 258 aircraft for 66 customers.

Air France-KLM Decision On Jet Order In Summer

Air France-KLM hopes to announce the results of a contest between Airbus and Boeing to supply the European airline with wide-bodied jets during the summer, its chief executive said on Thursday.
The airline group is looking for 100 lightweight, fuel-saving aircraft in the mid-sized 250-300 seat range and is comparing the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with the future Airbus A350.
Chief executive Pierre-Henri Gourgeon told shareholders both plane makers had made competitive offers, sidestepping a recent row over pressure from French parliamentarians to support Airbus. But he indicated Air France-KLM wanted them to lower the price.
"Both are offering very competitive products in terms of technical performance and economic performance and our job is to improve the proposals, especially at the financial level," he told the airline group's annual shareholder meeting.
The order would notionally be worth some USD$25 billion at list prices but airlines typically negotiate discounts.
Officials at Air France-KLM have said the order is likely to be split between Airbus and Boeing.

Airbus Loses Last DAE Orders as Gulf Lessor Cancels 45 Jets

Airbus SAS lost 45 plane orders worth $5.8 billion at list prices from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise Ltd. as the leasing company runs down its aircraft commitments.

Dubai Aerospace canceled orders for 34 single-aisle A320 jets and 11 A350 widebodies, Airbus spokesman Stefan Schaffrath said by phone after figures released by the European planemaker today showed the Gulf business to have zero contracts remaining.
State-owned DAE, set up in 2006 with the aim of becoming one of the world’s biggest aircraft lessors, ordered 100 planes from both Airbus and Boeing Co. (BA) at the 2007 Dubai air show, only to scale back the plans when its financial situation weakened during the global recession. Some 25 Airbus jets were canceled by the company last August and 30 in February, Schaffrath said.
DAE, which didn’t respond to calls seeking comment, has previously overturned orders for 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 32 737s. Boeing data published today didn’t reveal any further cancellations by the leasing firm, and Marc Birtel, a spokesman for the manufacturer in Seattle, declined to comment.
Airbus, the world’s biggest planemaker, secured 777 new orders in the first half, according to its website. There were also 137 cancellations, including those at DAE, giving a net figure of 640 planes. It delivered 258 jets in the period.

Neo Boost

Some 601 orders were logged by Toulouse, France-based Airbus in June alone, the bulk of them at the Paris air show, with bookings for the re-engined A320neo leading the way.
Chicago-based Boeing said it delivered 222 aircraft in the first half, while net orders totaled 171 after 20 cancellations from Etihad Airways, Air Pacific and Gulf Air. Both planemakers are lifting output to work off record backlogs.
Dubai Aerospace posted a $10.4 million profit in 2010 versus a $21.1 million year-earlier loss as sales rose 1.8 percent to $1.6 billion, according to the annual report of DIFC Investments LLC, which has a 23.3 percent stake in the company.
DAE said on June 29 that Robert Genise, chief executive officer at its capital division, had left and that the leasing business would report to the company’s chief operating officer. DAE has aircraft assets in excess of $2 billion and clients in 14 countries, it said at the time.

AirAsia To Extend Airbus Deal To 300 Planes

AirAsia will buy an extra 100 Airbus A320neo jets, taking its record-breaking order to 300 planes, a source said, a deal that would make the Malaysia-based low-cost airline one of the world's largest carriers.
AirAsia and Airbus announced an USD$18.2 billion deal for 200 planes at the Paris Air Show last month, shattering aviation records for the largest ever airline order. The additional order takes the list price of the contract to a staggering USD$27 billion.
The bumper order highlights Airbus's growing lead over Boeing and throws the spotlight on AirAsia's aggressive growth plans at a time when high oil prices and an uncertain global economy are clouding the outlook for travel demand.
Analysts expect the extended order to drive AirAsia's expansion as it competes with short-haul carriers such as India's IndiGo, Singapore's Tiger Airways and Australia's Jetstar in the Asia-Pacific region, the fastest growing in the world.
"AirAsia's last replacement order was in 2007/2008. These new orders are long overdue so it's not an aggressive order," said Kunal Sinha, an aerospace expert with the Frost & Sullivan consultancy.
"AirAsia's new fleet is to be used mostly to link Southeast Asia to India and China. By 2015, Southeast Asia will have open skies so you have to have a growth plan."
Boeing on Wednesday said it expected 33,500 new planes to be delivered by 2030, driven by growth in India and elsewhere in Asia.
AirAsia plans to list its operations in Thailand and Indonesia this year as it expands in those markets and is in talks to open a hub in Singapore, its chief executive Tony Fernandes has said.
Like the previous order, the additional 100 planes would also use CFM International engines, the source with direct knowledge of the deal said, declining to be identified because the deal is not public yet.
The source said AirAsia would receive a discount for the entire order, but did not give further details.
AirAsia's regional head for corporate finance and treasury Aireen Omar said, "We ordered 200 and so far there are no changes."
An Airbus spokesman said the manufacturer would not comment on commercial discussions with customers that were confidential.
GROWTH PLANS
AirAsia, which flies to 63 destinations in more than 20 countries, has 90 planes currently, almost all single-aisle Airbus A320s. Besides the 300 Airbus A320neo deal, it has another 75 Airbus aircraft already on order.
"Though we look aggressive, we have expanded very cautiously," Fernandes said this week. "But I have always said this airline is worth at least 500 aircraft."
According to International Air Transport Association (IATA) data, United Continental had the largest passenger fleet of 737 planes at the end of 2010, followed by Delta Air Lines with 722, American Airlines with 618 and Lufthansa with 427.
Non-IATA member Southwest Airlines, the only low-cost carrier currently in the top five, has around 550 planes.
"AirAsia had the first-mover advantage and it continues to stay ahead of the game by ordering fuel-efficient planes and keeping the size growing," said an aviation analyst with a Malaysian investment bank who declined to be identified due to company policy.
"But the key risk is if expansion plans do not succeed. The Malaysian base is fairly saturated so if the other markets do not grow or cannot take off because of protectionism or other factors, then they will find themselves having to manage a lot of aircraft," the analyst said.
Fernandes said the A320neo purchases would be funded by debt and cash flow as staggered deliveries begin in 2016.
"We're buying the planes now, we don't pay for it all now. They become due in 2016 so we're just paying some deposits now which is not erroneous at all to our balance sheet."
The A320neo is a version of Airbus's best-selling 150-seat passenger jet offering fuel savings with new engines from 2015. The huge orders for the single-aisle plane at the Paris Air Show have piled pressure on rival Boeing to come up with a newer version of its 737 workhorse.
Fernandes said his airline's growth was closely twinned with Airbus.
"We have a fantastic relationship with Airbus," he said. "They are much more than just suppliers to us. I credit them tremendously with our growth and I want to be more than just a customer of theirs."
It is now part of aviation industry lore that Fernandes asked Airbus chief salesman Joe Leahy to come on to the dance floor of a Paris nightclub before signing the A320neo deal.
"As part of a family we do some crazy things together," the 47-year-old Malaysian millionaire said.
Asian budget airlines placed a record USD$42 billion in plane orders during the Paris Air Show, illustrating their high expectations for travel in the world's fastest growing market and also triggering worries some may not survive.
Many of the no-frills carriers such as AirAsia and Indigo aim to more than double their fleets to power rapid growth, partly at the expense of full-service airlines such as Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines.
Worldwide passenger demand is expected to rise 4.4 percent over the next year with the Asia-Pacific region growing faster at 6.4 percent, according to IATA, which represents the majority of airlines operating in the USD$598 billion industry.
The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, an independent aviation market research provider, said low-cost carriers accounted for 16 percent of the market in terms of seats within Asia Pacific last year, up from 6 percent in 2005.
Their market share is set to rise 2 percentage points annually to about 26 percent in 2015, it said.

A passenger reported that the captain instructed cabin crew to discontinue service and stow the carts just after the service had ended. Some time later, about 70nm out of London the captain announced they had a cracked windshield and would be received by emergency services. The aircraft taxied to a stand, police embarked the aircraft, passengers disembarked. The passenger concluded: "The crack was quite huge." The aircraft landed safely. The aircraft got stuck on the ground in Kuala Lumpur until Jun 20th, when the aircraft was finally able to continue the flight reaching Phuket with a delay of 108 hours (4.5 days). Passengers in Phuket in the meantime were waiting to catch their flight VC-247 home to Brisbane. A small number of them were rebooked onto other flights. A stranded passenger waiting to depart Phuket purchased a ticket on Thai Airways to get to Bangkok and Brisbane and found plenty of empty seats on those flights challenging claims that no alternative flights were available. The airline explained that the fault was thought to be minor requiring only a short stay on the ground, however, a spare part was needed that had to be flown in from Toulouse. Another aircraft was chartered to complete the journey and bring those passengers waiting in Phuket home to Australia, however that flight didn't materialize. Passengers were provided with free accomodation, a full refund of the tickets and another free trip. Strategic is changing procedures learning from the incident and apologized to the passengers for disrupting their travel plans. Incident: Air Europa A332 over Atlantic on Jul 4th 2011, technical problem By Simon Hradecky, created Tuesday, Jul 5th 2011 10:07Z, last updated Tuesday, Jul 5th 2011 10:07Z An Air Europa Airbus A330-200, registration EC-KTG performing flight UX-63 from Madrid,SP (Spain) to Cancun (Mexico), was enroute at FL360 over the Atlantic about 400nm west of Porto (Portugal) when the crew decided to return to Madrid due to some technical problem. The airplane descended to FL100 still over the Atlantic and landed safely back on Madrid's runway 33L about 4.5 hours after the decision to return and about 6 hours after departure. The airplane stopped on the runway due to loss of nosewheel steering and was towed to the apron. A replacement Airbus A330-200 registration EC-JZL departed about 4.5 hours after landing and reached Cancun with a delay of 10 hours
