Airbus Updates No.4096

Turkish Airlines to order additional Airbus A350s

On 4 September 2023, Turkish Airlines announced, in a filing to the Istanbul Stock Exchange, that the airline is set to order additional Airbus A350s. In total, the deal will be for ten A350-900s, with delivery scheduled between 2025 and 2027.

Turkish Airlines is currently operating fourteen A350-900s, and has had twelve more on order. The airline also held five options on the A350 but it's unclear if these ten are (partially) conversions of these options into firm orders.

Earlier this year, Turkish Airlines announced it was planning to place a very large order for up to 600 aircraft, consisting of 200 widebodies and 400 narrowbodies. According to several news outlets, the airline is still working on these plans.

Airbus Updates No.4092

A321 Transavia 640Transavia's First Airbus A321neo Taking Shape

Announced in December 2021, the Air France-KLM Group opted to place an order with Airbus to replace their Boeing 737-fleet. That order comprised a combination of A320/321neos, plus A350Fs (with the option to convert them to passenger aircraft) for the cargo fleet.

We reported earlier on this, also that they secured more aircraft via ALC.

The Transavia CEO was quoted as saying: "For now, we have firm orders for 27 neo plus 17 options, so 44 in total. The split between A321neo/A320neo will be around 60:40, but we keep a close eye on the discussions around slot capacity at Schiphol. If the number will be reduced, the logical step is to look at larger aircraft. Upgauging is a clear instrument in our strategy to reduce unit costs and the A321neo is perfect for this, with lots of capabilities, lower noise levels, less CO2 and NOx emissions. For now, the split is 60/40, but we will confirm this later,” said the Dutch Transavia chief. His French counterparts are yet to reveal their preferences for the A320/A321 split.

Recently a first picture emerged of the aft fuselage and tail section of A321 PH-YHZ, plus parts of the sharklets. Planespotters.net gives this breakdown of the first five to be delivered, with the first one due later this year.

  • PH-YHA A321-251NX 11919
  • PH-YHW A321-251NX 11905
  • PH-YHX A321-251NX 11891

A380 HS TUB FRA 16dec12 Edward Kleiser 2 640Thai Airways offers Airbus A380s for sale

Thai Airways has begun the process of selling all six of its Airbus A380s in an “as-is, where-is” condition. Back in November 2022 we reported on the airline considering putting them back in service as passenger demand increased, but they since have gone back on that decision.

The airline sent out an invitation to interested parties on 23 August 2023, offering them the opportunity to bid on the A380s. All six were stored during the beginning of the pandemic between March and April 2020, with Thai Airways never bringing them back to service.

Bidders interested in acquiring any of the aircraft are welcome to put forth their proposals as well as a $50,000 deposit (per aircraft) no later than 11:59 pm Bangkok time (UTC +7) on 12 September 2023.

By completing the purchase of the aircraft, the buyer would also have to fly their aircraft out of Thailand or would have them dismantled on site. No Airworthiness Directives (AD) or Service Bulletins (SB) were completed on the aircraft. None of the six had their most recent C-checks completed, including two with C3 checks scheduled in May and June 2019.

All aircraft have a three-class layout, with twelve Royal First Class (Venus by Safran), sixty Royal Executive Class (Solstys by Stelia), and 435 Economy Class (CL3510 by Recaro) seats onboard.

Currently, the status of the aircraft is:

  • HS-TUA (087), delivered on 28 September 2012 and parked at Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi since 26 March 2020.
  • HS-TUB (093), delivered on 29 November 2012 and parked at Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi since 1 April 2020.
  • HS-TUC (100), delivered on 21 December 2012 and parked at Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi since 2 April 2020.
  • HS-TUD (122), delivered on 22 March 2013 and parked at Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi since 31 March 2020.
  • HS-TUE (125), delivered on 29 October 2013 and parked at U-Tapao since 14 April 2020
  • HS-TUF (131), delivered on 29 November 2013 and parked at U-Tapao since 14 April 2020

Kyrgyzstan's Aero Nomad to take A330-200 in 2024

Aero Nomad (KA, Bishkek) will add an A330-200 to its fleet in 2024, becoming the only Kyrgyz carrier to operate a Western-built passenger widebody jet.

The airline hinted that it would use the aircraft for flights to long-haul leisure destinations such as Thailand, Viet Nam, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Istanbul, and Antalya, although it said that specific details would be revealed in due time. Aero Nomad did not respond to ch-aviation's request for more information on the identity of the aircraft, which will be configured for up to 293 passengers in a dual-class layout.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Aero Nomad currently operates four A320-200s on a scheduled network out of Bishkek and Osh International, connecting the two cities with destinations in Russia, India, and Pakistan. The airline launched in late 2021.

The widebody aircraft currently operated by airlines in the Central Asian country are limited to Il-76, A300, and B747-200(F) freighters.

Airbus Updates No.4089

Qantas orders twelve Airbus A350s

Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith) will order two dozen long range widebodies, including twelve A350s and twelve B787s, to replace existing A330 and A380 types. The airline confirmed the order in Sydney on August 24 when announcing their FY22/23 results.

The order, which Qantas calls the "final piece of its jet fleet renewal program," is split between both manufacturers to provide maximum flexibility for future growth. The B787s will progressively replace the carrier's twenty-eight A330s, and the A350s will replace the carrier's ten A380-800s, which Qantas intends to start retiring from FY32. There are also additional purchase rights options.

"We can draw down the purchase rights as needed for further replacement of aircraft, or for future growth," said Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce. "Our financial framework will continue to guide our decision-making, and the phasing of these orders, coupled with the flexibility to shift deliveries, gives us confidence that we can fund this within our debt range and through earnings while we continue to return money to our shareholders." The Qantas Group includes Qantas, QantasLink, Jetstar AirwaysQantas Freight, and a highly profitable loyalty division.

The firm Boeing order includes four B787-9s and eight B787-10s, while the Airbus order sees Qantas take more of the A350-1000s, a type the carrier intends to begin inducting soon to begin servicing its Project Sunrise flights. Deliveries from both manufacturers will start in FY27 and continue well into the 2030s, while the purchase rights options extend through FY37.

Built into the order is a partnership with Airbus and Boeing to access 500 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from 2028, representing 90% of the SAF required to meet the Qantas Group's interim 2030 sustainability goals. The group will source eighty million litres of the fuel from existing SAF facilities while the remainder will come from new projects.

Separately, the group reported an FY22/23 underlying profit before tax of AUD2.47 billion Australian dollars (USD1.6 billion) and a statutory after-tax profit of AUD1.74 billion (USD1.13 billion) for the 12 months to June 30, 2023. Joyce calls it a substantial turnaround in the group's fortunes.
