Airbus Updates No.3979

Jet2 takes first A321neo, wet-leases two A321ceo

Jet2 (United Kingdom) (LS, Leeds/Bradford) has taken delivery of its first A321-200NX and sourced an additional two A321-200s under a two-year seasonal wet-lease contract.

G-SUNB (msn 11379) was registered in the United Kingdom on March 31, 2023, and delivered from Hamburg Finkenwerder to East Midlands for final repainting on April 1. On April 5, it was repositioned to Manchester International, but has yet to enter revenue service, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows.

The aircraft is the first of sixty-three A321-200NX ordered by Jet2 plc from Airbus. The leisure-oriented low-cost carrier ordered the initial batch of 34 aircraft in August 2021 but has since gradually upped its commitment. The aircraft will replace Jet2's ageing fleet of B737-300s (currently numbering seven aircraft with an average age of 25.1 years), B737-800s (84 aircraft with an average age of 13.7 years), and B757-200s (eight units, 32.5 years old on average).

However, as the airline strives to add more capacity for the busy summer season, it has also signed a long-term wet-lease commitment with Titan Airways (ZT, London Stansted) covering two A321-200s. G-POWN (msn 3830) started operating on behalf of Jet2 out of London Stansted on March 31, 2023. The other unit, G-POWU (msn 3708), has yet to be deployed into service on behalf of the LCC. Titan Airways said both wet leases would run through early November 2023 and will repeat during the Summer 2024 season.

Jet2 also operates a small in-house subfleet of three A321-200s, as well as one more unit of the type wet-leased from Hi Fly (5K, Beja).

Icelandair orders A321XLRs

On 6 April 2023, Icelandair announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for an order for thirteen A321XLRs (A321-200NY). The deal also includes options for twelve additional XLRs. Deliveries of the new Airbuses is expected from 2029 onwards.

Icelandair, however, plans to begin Airbus-operations by 2025 as the airline is also in advanced negotiations with lessors to lease four A321LRs (A321-200NX).

The airline is planning to use the new A321neos as the replacement for its fleet of seventeen Boeing B757-200s, two B757-300s, and three B767-300ERs. In the press-release, it also stated it will continue to operate its B737MAXs, of which the fleet today consists of fourteen B737-8s and four B737-9s.

Airbus wins order from Azerbaijan Airlines

At a ceremony in Baku on 6 April 2023, Airbus and Azerbaijan Airlines signed a contract for an order for Azerbaijan Airlines. In total, the national carrier is ordering twelve new Airbuses, consisting of A320neos and A321neos. The exact breakdown per type as well as the planned delivery timeframe hasn't been communicated yet.

Azerbaijan Airlines, which was founded in 1992, currently operates a fleet of four A319s, seven A320s, three A320neos, two A340-500s, one A340-600, one Boeing B757-200, three B767-300ERs, one B777-200LR, and two B787-8s.

The airline had once ordered ten B737-8s but decided to cancel that order back in 2019 after having "safety concerns" over the type. During last year's Farnborough Airshow, Azerbaijan Airlines did sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Boeing for four additional B787-8s but these haven't been firmed yet.

easyJet first to take over A320neo not taken by Viva

easyJet UK (U2, London Luton) has become the first carrier to scoop aircraft ordered by the dormant and financially stricken Colombian low-cost carrier Viva (Colombia) (VH, Medellín José Maria Córdova) and will shortly take deliveries of two A320-200Ns directly from the manufacturer.

G-UJEA (msn 11230) and G-UJEB (msn 11242) remain at Toulouse Blagnac in Viva's livery but have already operated their respective customer acceptance tests. Both have been on the United Kingdom's G- register since March 29.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that easyJet operates thirty-two A320-200Ns under its British AOC, eight under easyJet Europe, and seven under easyJet Switzerland. It has a further 132 units on direct order from Airbus. The group's A320neo Family fleet also includes fifteen A321-200NX with an additional 33 on firm order.

Viva operated six A320-200s and ten A320-200Ns when it suspended flight operations on February 27. The LCC has not thrown in the towel yet and is still hoping that an eventual merger with Avianca Airlines will allow it to restart. Despite the gradual downsizing of its future order book, Grupo Viva still has sixteen A320-200Ns on firm order from Airbus.

Airbus Updates No.3972

Sky Express new Airbus A321neo-operator

On 1 April 2023, Sky Express from Greece became the newest A321neo-operator by conducting its first commercial flight with the type. The aircraft, SX-GRA (8014) flew its first passengers to Santorini from Athens and was handed-over just two days earlier on 30 March 2023. Previously, this Airbus saw service with Interjet from Mexico.

The A321neo is the first of two of the type the airline is leasing, which will join a fleet of four ATR42-500s, eight ATR72-600s, one A320 and eight A320neos.

Lufthansa acquires second hand Airbus A350s

Last month, Lufthansa ordered additional new widebodies with Boeing and Airbus but the Group clearly has a hunger for more as it now acquired second hand A350-900s as well. In total, the airline has secured six A350-900s, which were previously operated by LATAM and South African Airways. The aircraft involved are:

  • N285BN (035), former LATAM, currently stored at Victorville (CA) since 19 August 2021.
  • N286BN (045), former LATAM, currently stored at Victorville (CA) since 26 October 2021.
  • N287BN (079), former LATAM, currently stored at Victorville (CA) since 21 July 2021.
  • N264AR (363), former LATAM, currently stored at Victorville (CA) since 25 June 2021.
  • OE-IPK (226), former South African Airways, currently stored at Teruel since 15 July 2020.
  • OE-IPX (245), former South African Airways, currently stored at Teruel since 11 July 2020.

When the six A350s will join the fleet is unclear but it's expected they will do so after an extensive refitting to the Lufthansa cabin lay-out.

It's not the first time Lufthansa secures second-hand A350s, as the airline has previously sourced four A350-900s from Philippine Airlines.

Today, Lufthansa has 21 A350-900s and a further 33 new on order with Airbus, making them one of the largest operators and customers for the type.

HiSky Europe takes first Airbus A321neo(LR)

HiSky Europe (H4, Iasi) has taken delivery of the first of two A321-200NX(LR)s on lease from Air Lease Corporation after YR-WOW (msn 10928) was ferried to Bucharest Henri Coanda on March 30, 2023. The jet is configured for up to 201 passengers, including eight business class seats.

The Romanian carrier debuted the aircraft in commercial service on March 31, with its first flight to Dublin International. Local aviation news website BoardingPass.ro said YR-WOW would initially be used on scheduled flights to Dublin, Malaga, and Tel Aviv Ben Gurion, as well as for charter services.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that HiSky Europe also operates four A320-200s, while its Moldovan sister carrier, HiSky (H7, Chisinau), operates a single A319-100.

Queen Of The Skies - Virgin Atlantic's 4th Airbus A330neo Touches Down

Virgin Atlantic has welcomed another Airbus A330neo, which it has named 'Queen Of The Skies' in homage to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The aircraft touched down at London Heathrow yesterday and becomes the fourth A330neo in the Virgin fleet.

Queen of the Skies returns

Readers scanning the headline of this article may have thought it another April Fool's joke, but Virgin isn't bringing back the Boeing 747. The airline has christened its latest Airbus A330neo 'Queen of the Skies', a moniker also bestowed on the iconic 747. The brand-new widebody (registration: G-VEII) can seat up to 262 passengers - 32 in Virgin's business 'Upper Class' (including two Retreat Suites), 46 in premium economy and 184 in economy.

Since receiving its first A330neo in October 2022, the airline has inducted three more and will gradually phase out its older A330-300s, of which it still operates 10 - the next-generation A330neo is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and offers 25% less fuel burn and carbon emissions compared to previous generation aircraft.

Not the first with this name

G-VEII is in fact the second plane in the Virgin Atlantic fleet to be named Queen of the Skies. One of the airline's now-retired Airbus A340s (registration: G-VEIL) was given this name back in 2004 during a ceremony led by the Queen herself, and served the carrier for over 12 years before it was withdrawn from use in 2016.

The airline announced the name of the aircraft back in January via its Twitter account, joining its three other A330neos - Billie Holiday (G-VJAZ), Space Oddity (G-VTOM), and Eliza Doolittle (G-VLDY). The jet would complete its customer acceptance flight on March 24th before departing Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS) at 13:18 on March 31st, arriving at Virgin's London Heathrow (LHR) base at 13:47.

Up to 16 A330neos

Virgin Atlantic has an order for 16 Airbus A330neos for delivery until 2026. The carrier first announced its order with Airbus back in June 2016 - for 10 A330neos and options for six more - with deliveries to take place between 2018 and 2020. However, the COVID pandemic forced Virgin to re-think its fleet plans, and it delayed deliveries of its neos until late-2022.
