Wizz Air firms up 75 Airbus A321neo options

Wizz Air Holdings has firmed up seventy-five A321-200N options as it seeks to both grow its fleet and lower its fuel consumption.

"On 14 September 2022, [Wizz Air] gave notice to Airbus to exercise Purchase Rights in relation to 75 Airbus A321neo aircraft. Delivery dates of the Purchase Option Aircraft are subject to agreement between Wizz Air and Airbus and will be subject to the approval of Wizz Air shareholders as a Class 1 transaction under the Financial Conduct Authority's Listing Rules," the carrier said in a stock market filing.

The options were secured as a part of its 2021 order for seventy-five A321-200Ns and twenty-seven A321-200NY(XLR)s, Wizz Air's share of an order for 255 aircraft placed by the LCC's investor Indigo Partners.

Wizz Air said the new order would bring it closer to its target fleet of around 500 aircraft by the end of the 2020s. The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows its Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) subsidiary currently operates fifty A320-200s, six A320-200Ns, thirty-five A321-200s, fifty-three A321-200NX, and a single A330-200F (operated on behalf of the Hungarian government). Wizz Air UK (W9, London Luton) operates three A320s, six A321-200s, and eight A321-200NX, while Wizz Air Abu Dhabi (5W, Abu Dhabi Int'l) operates four A321-200NX. The holding's order book prior to the new commitment comprised thirteen A320neo, 245 A321neo, and forty-seven A321neo(XLR)s.

 Teleport to add Airbus A321P2F aircraft

Capital A, the holding company owning AirAsia (X) and Teleport, has announced it has signed a lease-agreement with lessor BBAM for the delivery of three  Airbus A321P2Fs (Passenger-to-Freighter). The aircraft are set to be delivered from the first quarter of 2023.

The three A321P2Fs will join Teleport's single Boeing B737-800BCF, which is operated by K-Mile Air from Thailand. It's expected, however, that the Airbuses will be operated by AirAsia for the cargo airline.

Teleport launched it's dedicated cargo-flying operations in November last year to boost the company's e-commerce logistics operations. It expects to grow to a fleet of 100 freighters by 2030 if the e-commerce boom continues.

HiSky to lease A321neos from Air Lease Corporation

HiSky has signed a lease-agreement wtih Air Lease Corporation in which it secures the leases of two Airbus A321neoLRs (A321-200NX). The duo is planned for delivery in March 2023 and are coming from ALC's existing orders for the A321neo it has with Airbus. The airline will use the new type as of April 2023 to serve new, longer-range, destinations which it will announce in the coming months.

HiSky is a Moldavian carrier but also has significant presence in Romania. It launched operations last year and currently flies with one Airbus A319 and four A320s, which are also leased from ALC. The airline operates charter as well as scheduled services.

Air Transat new A321XLR-customer

Air Transat is the newest customer for the largest-range variant of the Airbus A321neo, the A321XLR. The airline has signed a lease-agreement with Air Lease Corporation for three A321XLRs with an option on a fourth aircraft. The three aircraft are planned to be delivered at the end of 2025 and in 2026. If taken-up, the fourth aircraft could be delivered in 2027.

With an increased range of 15% compared to the A321LR (A321-200NX), the addition of the A321XLR will give the airline new options to reach more destinations with its narrowbody-fleet as the aircraft can fly up to 8,700 kms.

The new aircraft will join a fleet of seven A321-200s, twelve A321-200NXs, eleven A330-200s and one A330-300. Air Transat also has orders for seven additional A321LRs.

On 15 June 2022, the Airbus A321XLR took to the skies for the first time, kicking-off its flight test programme and road to certification. Airbus expects to have this finalized next year, with entry into commercial service in 2024.

1st A330neo for Virgin Atlantic painted

Airbus has, on 6 September, released picture of the first fully painted Airbus A330-900 for Virgin Atlantic. The aircraft involved is currently registered F-WWCG (2018) and will become G-VJAZ. It flew for the first time on 12 August from Toulouse and is expected to be delivered end of September/Early October. It's planned for entry into commercial service on 12 October, flying from London-Heathrow to Boson-Logan International (MA).

In total, the airline has sixteen Airbus A330-900s on order, which are a combination of directly purchased aircraft as well as leased. Three A330-900s are planned for delivery this year, while the remaining thirteen will all be delivered before end 2026.

They will join a fleet which now consists of ten Airbus A330-300s, nine A350-1000s and seventeen Boeing B787-9s.

Air Greenland puts its sole A330-200 up for sale

Air Greenland (GL, Nuuk) has listed its sole A330-200 for sale. The airline has appointed Skytech-AIC to handle the transaction which will see OY-GRN (msn 230) leave the airline after 16 years of service. The company-owned plane, which is powered by Pratt & Whitney 4168A engines, is 24 years old and is available from March 2023.

The sale comes as the airline awaits the arrival of an A330-800N (msn 2020) which is due for delivery later this year. "(The) Airbus 330-800neo means an improved customer experience, lower CO2 emissions, more seats and more space for freight across the Atlantic," the airline's 2022 annual report says.

In addition to the A330-200, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows Air Greenland also operates a single DHC-8-200 and six DHC-8-Q200s as well as various helicopters. The airline serves 60 destinations in three countries, with the Airbus jet operating flights to Reykjavik Keflavik (Iceland) and Copenhagen Kastrup (Denmark).

ürkiye's AnadoluJet adds first A320neo

Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul New) has taken delivery of its first A320-200N for operation by its low-cost AnadoluJet (TK, Ankara Esenboga) division.

On lease from CDB Aviation, TC-LUK (msn 11103) was handed over on September 6, 2022, but has yet to be ferried from Toulouse Blagnac to Türkiye. It is the first of two units AnadoluJet plans to induct by October 1. Mainline Turkish Airlines does not operate any A320neo.

The short-haul division of Turkish Airlines will deploy the A320neo out of its base at Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen. AnadoluJet is opportunistically expanding its fleet, having scooped seven B737-8s and one A321-200NX not taken up by sanctioned Russian carrier S7 Airlines (S7, Novosibirsk) earlier this year. The division's fleet also comprises 39 in-house B737-800s and a further 13 of the type under a long-term ACMI agreement with SunExpress (XQ, Antalya).

The ch-aviation fleets ownership module shows that CDB Aviation also owns one B737-800 operated by AnadoluJet and one B777-300(ER) operated by Turkish Airlines mainline.

India's IndiGo again eyes UK using A321neo(XLR)s

IndiGo Airlines (6E, Delhi Int'l) is mulling broadening its international horizons and operating flights to the UK using the A321-200NY(XLR). The Indian low-cost carrier is due to take the first of the planes in mid-2024. With a range of 4,700 nautical miles (8,700 kilometers), the jet offers IndiGo the chance to significantly expand its international network.

“The XLR is a couple of years down the road. We are working out what is happening with the network. But it is too early to say,” AirInsight reports an IndiGo official saying. Asked about longstanding plans for London Heathrow flights, the official said it was too far out to give a firm answer, adding the airline would need to make a decision about one year out in order to apply for slots there.

IndiGo has a 50% plus domestic market share. However, its international network is now limited to Asia (as far east as Guangzhou, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Singapore Changi), the Gulf region, and as far west as Istanbul New. During a recent earnings call, CEO Rono Dutta also mentioned IATAT!LV, Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta, and even Milan Malpensa as other potential destinations currently on IndiGo's radar.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, IndiGo has a fleet of 273 aircraft including twenty-eight A320-200s, one hundred and forty-five A320-200Ns, sixty-five A321-200NXs, and thirty-five ATR72-600s. The airline also has a further 518 narrowbody jets on order from Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) across the A320neo and A321neo families including sixty-nine A321neo(XLR)s and 252 A321neo.

Meanwhile, as an interim step before potentially launching its own flights to the UK, IndiGo announced a new codeshare agreement with Virgin Atlantic (VS, London Heathrow) last week that will see carrier funnel passengers on and off Virgin Atlantic's multiple daily flights into India (2x daily to Delhi Int'l and daily to Mumbai Int'l). The agreement allows IndiGo to book its passengers through to the UK from multiple origin points in India.

SAS Scandinavian seeks to return 10+ aircraft to lessors

SAS Scandinavian Airlines (SK, Copenhagen Kastrup) wants to return around 10% of its in-house fleet to lessors as part of its SAS FORWARD restructuring program. Legal representatives of the airline filed a motion on September 3 to reject the leases and implement lease rejection and return procedures. SAS Scandinavian plans to jettison five narrowbody and five widebody jets in addition to two other relinquished leases. The airline also wants to return CFM International CFM56 engines.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, the carrier's in-house fleet currently entails four A319-100s (all owned), eleven A320-200s (two owned), fifty-two A320-200Ns (11 owned), seven A321-200s (four owned), three A321-200NX (all leased), eight A330-300s (four owned), six A350-900s (four owned), ten B737-700s (eight owned), and four B737-800s (all owned). Three E195s are operated via its SAS Link (SVS, Copenhagen Kastrup) subsidiary.

"The debtors are party to a number of aircraft lease agreements that are significantly above market or no longer fit their go-forward business plan," the filing to the Southern District of New York US Bankruptcy Court reads. "While the debtors sought various concessions from aircraft lessors prior to the commencement date, including amending existing leases on mark-to-market terms and returning aircraft, the debtors were unable to achieve the level of concessions needed to successfully implement SAS FORWARD."

The ten aircraft SAS has applied to return are;

• A320neo EI-SIF (msn 8109) on lease from SMBC Aviation Capital;
• A320neo SE-ROD (msn 7755) on lease from SMBC;
• A320neo SE-ROC (msn 7723) on lease from SMBC;

• A330-300 LN-RKT (msn 1697) on lease from Jin Shan 7 Ireland Company;
• A330-300 LN-RKS (msn 1665) on lease from Jin Shan Ireland Company Limited;
• A350-900 SE-RSC (msn 391) on lease from FS World Leasing Co., Ltd;
• A350-900 SE-RSB (msn 378) on lease from FLIP No.247 Co. Ltd., FLIP; and
• B737-700 SE-RET (msn 32734) on lease from ACS 18-Pack Irish DAC.

It had previously sought to relinquish:

• A321-200 OY-KBH (msn 1675) on lease from IC AirLease One Ltd;

The filing notes the application to return the aircraft follows a comprehensive fleet review that aims to reduce the mix of aircraft in operation considering market conditions, demand, and other business factors.

"While this review remains in progress, the Debtors anticipate reducing the size of their fleet and returning uneconomic aircraft and related equipment," the filing notes.

AirAsia to resume A321neo deliveries in 2024 - Fernandes

After pausing deliveries earlier in the pandemic, AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) will start accepting new A321-200NXs again from 2024. Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A (formerly AirAsia Group and owners of the AirAsia brand), confirmed the resumption while presenting the company's second quarter financial results in Kuala Lumpur this week.

Capital A posted an operating loss of MYR491.3 million ringgits (USD109.8 million) for 2Q22 but is enjoying exponential revenue increases with most travel restrictions eased in the company's core Southeast Asian markets. AirAsia operated 65 planes during the second quarter. By August, that had increased to 108 planes. By the end of the year, the Capital A anticipates having 160 aircraft flying. In addition to the Kuala Lumpur-based AirAsia, there are several affiliate AirAsia airlines including Thai AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, and AirAsia India.

"We will also be taking delivery of the new Airbus A321neos from 2024, which will further reduce our emissions per seat by 20% while further driving our business growth," said Fernandes. However, the CEO did not specify how many new aircraft he expects in 2024 nor did he provide a year-by-year delivery breakdown across later years.

The ch-aviation PRO airlines module reveals AirAsia has 362 A321-200NX on order, with deliveries expected through to 2035. To date, the airline has received just four of the type with two in service with the Malaysian AOC and two with Thai AirAsia. AirAsia India also has eight A321neo on order. In April 2020, AirAsia halted all deliveries pending a review of its order book which subsequently lead to 13 undelivered A320-200Ns being converted into A321neo.

Rossiya sued by GA Telesis over A319 seizure

Gain Aircraft Ireland, a subsidiary of GA Telesis, has commenced legal action in a UK court against Rossiya (FV, St. Petersburg) and sister carrier Aeroflot (SU, Moscow Sheremetyevo). The legal action concerns a leased A319-100 that was seized and kept inside Russia after sanctions imposed earlier this year isolated that country's aviation industry.

According Ireland's Independent newspaper, Gain Aircraft Ireland has joined a line of other lessors attempting to use the UK legal system to retrieve their planes or seek damages from Russian airlines after planes became stranded in that country or were effectively seized and re-registered by the Russian authorities.

Prior to the invasion, GA Telesis had a long association with Rossiya and Aeroflot. In early 2020, the company announced the closing of the purchase of two Airbus A319s subject to lease with Rossiya. At the time, GA Telesis' Marc Cho called Rossiya "an outstanding airline partner."

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, GA Telesis has two A319s with Rossiya: RA-73186 (msn 3942) and RA-73216 (msn 3998). Both jets were shunted to the Russian register in March 2022 having previously been VQ-BCO and VQ-BCP respectively on the Bermudan register. Both planes remain in active service, operating domestic Russian flights for Rossiya. It is uncertain which of the two planes the legal action concerns.
