Vietjet to order 100 Airbus A321neo aircraft

Paris, France, 17 June 2025 - Vietjet, Vietnam’s largest private airline, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus covering a major new order for 100 single-aisle A321neo aircraft, with the potential to add another 50 in the future.

The agreement was signed during the Paris Air Show by Vietjet CEO Dinh Viet Phuong and Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business.

“This new agreement marks a significant milestone in our strategic partnership with Airbus,” said Vietjet Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao. “These modern and efficient aircraft have been instrumental in Vietjet’s growth, helping us make air travel more accessible and affordable for millions, while strengthening our role as a connector for economic development, cultural exchange and global connectivity. This landmark agreement represents a vital step in Vietjet’s growth strategy as a multi-national aviation group.”

“Our latest agreement comes just weeks after the airline placed an additional order for A330neo widebody aircraft,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry. “Together the A321neo and A330neo will be perfect partners for Vietjet to continue to spread its wings, efficiently matching capacity more closely to demand across its network. The airline will also benefit from the high levels of technical commonality that are unique to latest generation Airbus aircraft.”

Operating a fleet of more than 100 Airbus aircraft, Vietjet continues to expand its global network and fleet modernisation.

The A321neo is the largest member of Airbus’ best-selling A320neo Family, offering unparalleled range and performance. By incorporating new generation engines and Sharklets, the A321neo brings a 50% noise reduction and more than 20% fuel savings and CO₂ reduction compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft, while maximising passenger comfort in the widest single-aisle cabin in the sky.

At the end of May 2025, more than 7,000 A321neo aircraft have been ordered by over 90 customers across the globe.

As with all in-production aircraft, the A321neo is able to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with a target to increase to up to 100% SAF capability by 2030.

Vietjet takes delivery of 1st A330

On Christmas Day 2021, Vietjet took delivery of its very first widebody aircraft. The Airbus in question is A330-300 VP-CJW (974), which was welcomed at Ho Chi Minh City by a delegation and got a water-salute by the airport fire brigade. The A330 is leased from ICBC and was previously in use with AirAsia X as 9M-XXB and will be registered VN-A811 in the coming days.

Vietjet will take delivery of at least three leased A330-300s and has announced it will first fly the type to Moscow as its new long-haul destination. The route is due to start in mid-2022.

Vietjet to lease A330s

On 5 November, Airbus and Vietjet signed a strategic partnership agreement. In this agreement, both companies agreed on the delivery timeline of its remaining 119 Airbus aircraft on order as well as continued training for the airline's technicians as well as training support for flight crews. Most notable, however, was the brief announcement that both companies will also work together in establishing and developing the airline's long-haul fleet.

Vietjet's first foray into widebodies will be three A330s, which it will lease via an unspecified lessor. The aircraft are planned for delivery from this month already. It's unclear what the exact version of the A330s will be. Some websites are reporting the A330-900 but looking at the model being handed over in the picture, it is the A330-300.

Currently, the Vietjet Group has a total fleet of 91 aircraft consisting of 28 A320s, 44 A321s and nineteen A321neos. Of this fleet, ten A320s and six A321s are operated by subsidiary ThaiVietjetair.

VietJet A321 Suffers Runway Excursion in Vietnam

Upon landing in Ho Chi Minh City, VietJet (VJ) flight 322 suffered a runway excursion. The airline has stated that there were no injuries reported on board. The aircraft came to rest in the mud, with damage to the wheels and tires.

Flight 322 was scheduled between Phu Quoc (PQC) and Ho Chi Minh City (SGN). According to FlightRadar24, the registration of the aircraft was VN-A657, an Airbus A321 delivered to VJ on March 27, 2018. The aircraft MSN8215 is 2.2 years old.

The weather conditions in Ho Chi Minh was rain, with gusts and thunderstorms, attributed to the formation of Storm Nuri. Photos of the accident site show evidence of large amounts of rain in the area.
Ho Chi Minh Airport has two parallel runways, 25L/07R and 25R/07L.

Per the NOTAM, Runway 25L/07R was not open due to a disabled aircraft on the tarmac.

In June 2020, a massive 18-month runway upgrade project was begun, upgrading the 25R/07L runways as well as several taxiways.
VietJet is a Vietnamese low-cost carrier, starting operations in 2011. The airline serves a variety of national and international destinations in Asia. Its fleet has 75 Airbus A320 family aircraft currently in service.

The carrier’s launch was beset by long delays attributed to various causes, such as a global economic slowdown and regulatory issues.

Despite the setbacks, VietJet Air’s first flight was operated on December 25, 2011, flying from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. The carrier carried its 10 millionth passenger in December 2014, and its 25 millionth passenger in December 2015.
