Airbus Updates No.3727

Qantas Reactivates Its Second Airbus A380

After the hoopla surrounding the reactivation of the first Qantas A380, the return of the second A380 was a far quieter affair. Over the weekend, VH-OQD Fergus McMaster made the journey from storage in California to Sydney, landing back home on Monday morning local time.

VH-OQD departed Los Angeles mid-evening on Saturday for the 14 hour plus flight down to Sydney. The Airbus A380 touched down in wet and overcast conditions just after 06:00 on Monday. The superjumbo had covered 7,641 miles (12,297 kilometers) on this flight.

Eagle-eyed planespotters were anticipating the return to service of the second Qantas A380. They’d spotted this plane doing some laps over Los Angeles in the runup to Saturday’s transpacific flight.

Youtube channel LA Flights has some nice footage of the jet pushing back in Los Angeles on Saturday evening. The A380 takes off right at the end of the footage. That plane is followed by a Qantas Dreamliner – both bound for Sydney.

Weekend A380 laps over Sydney

Qantas resumes scheduled A380 flights between Sydney and Los Angeles on Tuesday, January 11. The thrice-weekly flights are a stop-gap measure to solve a problem caused by out-of-action 787-9 Dreamliner crews.

Qantas reactivated another A380 in early November. VH-OQB Hudson Fysh made a splashy return home and has been busy operating familiarization flights over Sydney for out-of-practice A380 crews.

VH-OQB will depart Sydney and operate QF11 to Los Angeles on Tuesday evening. It will be the first Qantas A380 carrying fare-paying passengers since March 2020. Since the middle of last week, that plane has made multiple take-off and landings from Sydney Airport.

Over Wednesday and Thursday, VH-OQB operated four flights over Sydney, each of approximately one hour’s duration. The flights put crews and the aircraft through it their paces. By the weekend, the tempo of flying was really picking up.

On Saturday and Sunday, VH-OQB operated ten flights around Sydney. By breakfast time on Monday, the superjumbo was up in the air again. The flights typically comprise a loop out southwest towards the Wingecarribee area before turning back towards Sydney, running out over the Royal National Park, and going out to sea before heading back into the airport.

Qantas plans to reactivate 10 of 12 Airbus A380s

The decision to reactivate the Qantas A380s with VH-OQB and VH-OQD is a slightly odd one. Whereas VH-OQD is refurbished with the latest top-notch Qantas cabin product, VH-OQB is not. From a passenger’s point of view, it’s a lucky dip as to what plane you get.

Qantas plans to reactivate 10 of its 12 Airbus A380s. The airline has already refurbished six; VH-OQD, VH-OQG, VH-OQH, VH-OQI, VH-OQJ, and QH-OQK. Six still sport previous generation cabins. It’s not known which two A380s will not return to service. However, you might assume the two would come from the half dozen older yet-to-be refurbished planes.

The oldest Qantas A380 is VH-OQA Nancy Bird Walton, which arrived at Qantas in September 2008. The next two oldest A380s are Hudson Fysh and VH-OQC Paul McGinness, both of which landed at Qantas in December 2008. All three remain unrefurbished. However, the return of Hudson Fysh suggests at least one of the oldest Qantas A380s has a future at the airline.

ANOTHER SINGAPORE A380 DEPARTS ALICE SPRINGS

Singapore Airlines A380-841 9V-SKY

A third Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 has this week exited long-term storage and landed back to Singapore.

9V-SKT took off from Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport at 12:28pm local time on Thursday and touched down at Singapore’s Changi Airport just after 5pm local time, after completing the nearly eight hour journey.

It comes after Singapore Airlines announced it will bring its Airbus A380s back into service on select flights between Singapore and London from mid-November, and on flights between Sydney and Singapore from 1 December.

9V-SKT had previously been parked in the Alice Springs “boneyard” since April 2020, however it was ferried to Sydney on Tuesday ahead of its planned return to Singapore.

The aircraft departed Alice Springs at 10:34am local time on Tuesday, landing at Sydney three hours and six minutes later, at 3pm.

It is the third A380 to make its way from long-term storage in the Australian desert back to Singapore ahead of a planned return to passenger service in recent months.

The first to be resurrected was 9V-SKQ, which departed the Alice Springs storage facility in February, followed by 9V-SKW, which followed in July.

While Singapore Airlines, the launch customer for the superjumbo, is set to retire seven of its A380s, it will crucially keep 12 in service.

As of earlier this month, the airline had already reinstated three of its A380s – 9V-SKU, -SKV and -SKM – on services connecting Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and has announced plans to bring the superjumbo back online for routes to London and Sydney in the coming weeks.

“Once Australia’s border restrictions are lifted, I am sure Australians will relish the opportunity to experience all the comforts of our A380 as they wing their way from Singapore to London,” said Louis Arul, Singapore Airlines vice-president, southwest Pacific.

“Our award-winning digital initiatives, as well as our industry-leading health and safety measures, will ensure Australians travel in comfort and safety as they reunite with family and friends.”

It comes after the first Qantas A380 to return to Australia from storage finally touched down in Sydney after nearly 19 hours in the air, ahead of its planned return to service in 2022.

VH-OQB was ferried from a maintenance facility in Dresden to Sydney earlier this month, finally landing at Sydney Kingsford on 9 November after taking the scenic route via Sydney Harbour.

It is the first time VH-OQB has seen Australian shores since it was first ferried to LAX on 26 March 2020, in the early days of the pandemic.

Qantas is expected to bring OQB back into service on its Sydney-LAX route by April 2022, while its second superjumbo will return by July.

Five of the airlines A380s are expected to be back up and running for passengers by the end of 2022 on routes to LA and London, while the remainder of the fleet will be reintroduced gradually by the end of 2023.

Like Singapore, Qantas will not be bringing its entire A380 fleet back into service, with the impact of the pandemic resulting in the airline fast-tracking the retirement of two of its 12 superjumbos.

The decision marks the beginning of the end of Qantas’ iconic A380 fleet, following the decided end of the Airbus A380 program, as Airbus nears delivery of its last-ever A380 to Emirates.

Airbus Updates No.3525

Qantas A380s to return next year

Qantas has released its strategy for gradually restarting international flights. The airline expects to be able to launch these flights again from December onwards based on the pace of vaccinations in Australia. Initially, Qantas will focus on destinations with high vaccination rates, with focus on Japan, Singapore, the UK and the US.

By mid-2022 the airline will return at least five A380s back to duty to meet the high demand to London and Los Angeles (CA). Qantas has also announced it will retire two of its twelve A380s but will fly the type for many years to come. To underline this, the airline recently ferried A380 VH-OQB (015) from storage at Los Angeles (CA) to Dresden where it will be receiving its cabin upgrade. Qantas plans to have all of its ten A380s refurbished and back in service before the end of 2024.

Another bit of interesting fleet news is that the airline is working with Airbus to increase the range of some of its A330-200s. This will enable it to operate the type on the Brisbane-Los Angeles (CA) and Brisbane-San Francisco (CA) routes and rightsize demand and capacity.
