AirAsia converts A321neo to LRs; to resume deliveries

AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur International) has converted 36 orders for A321-200NX to the A321-200NX(LR) variant as it prepares its narrowbody fleet for a planned merger with the long-haul unit AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur International), the CEO of parent holding Capital A Tony Fernandes told reporters during a briefing.

"It's traditionally never been done by low-cost carriers, but we believe now that with the aircraft that Airbus has given us, the A321-200NX, A321-200NX(LR), A330-900, and soon to come the A321-200NY(XLR), we can build the first global network carrier and connect the world with low fares through our hubs in Kuala Lumpur InternationalBangkok Don Mueang, and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta," he declared.

The A321-200NX(LR)s are scheduled to start delivering in 2025. AirAsia currently has a firm order for 362 A321-200NX powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines, and the bulk of the commitment will remain in the non-(LR) variant for now. While AirAsia has not taken any new aircraft since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, as it was heavily affected by restrictions on travel across Southeast Asia, it is now picking up the pace.

The ch-aviation fleets history module shows the last new aircraft to deliver to the group were three A321-200NX to AirAsia and Thai AirAsia (FD, Bangkok Don Mueang) inducted on December 31, 2019. Since then, the group has added a limited number of second-hand aircraft, but Fernandes expects deliveries direct from Airbus to resume in June 2024. A total of 24 new aircraft are expected by the end of this year.

In terms of the A320neo Family, the Malaysian carrier also operates twenty-nine A320-200Ns and two A321-200NX, while Thai AirAsia operates eleven A320neo and two A321neo. Both airlines, as well as Philippines AirAsia (Z2, Manila Ninoy Aquino International) and Indonesia AirAsia (QZ, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta), also operate A320-200s.

The aircraft will complement the twenty A321-200NY(XLR)s on order by AirAsiaX. The long-haul unit currently operates eighteen A330-300s and has fifteen -900s on order.

Fernandes emphasised that the LRs would increase the carrier's flexibility in serving destinations in North Asia, Australia, and Central Asia. On an unrelated point, he pledged to launch services to Kenya - the group's first African destination - by the end of 2024. Going forward, the carrier plans to use the A330neo for a much broader intercontinental expansion, including through a host of fifth-freedom routes. Currently, the group's only intercontinental routes are to Australia.

"The network expansion is to cities like London, Paris, Amsterdam SchipholBratislavaBarcelona El PratCopenhagen KastrupCairo InternationalNairobi Jomo Kenyatta, and Cape Town International. East Coast in North America - New York, Miami InternationalToronto Pearson - will be via Europe, and West Coast - San FranciscoLos Angeles InternationalVancouver International - via Japan," he said.

Fernandes added that the proposed sale of AirAsia and AirAsia Aviation Group, the investment vehicle for AirAsia-branded carriers outside Malaysia, to AirAsia X was progressing.

"It's moving. It's off the airbridge. It's moving towards the runway," he said. "The stages would be approval from the stock exchange, sale and purchase agreement signed, shareholders' approval, court and raising capital. To do this plan, we also need to raise capital".

Iraq's Global Airlines secures two A321s for 2024 launch

lobal Airlines (Iraq) has leased two A321-200s from AFG Aviation Ireland, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AFG Air Finance, ahead of the planned launch of Hajj and Umrah charters later this year.

The lessor identified the aircraft as YI-BBA (msn 6399) and YI-BBC (msn 3458). While the former was previously reported as headed to Global Airlines, the second unit is a new addition to the start-up's fleet.

The 9.2-year-old ex-avianca airlines YI-BBA was registered in Iraq on February 2, 2024. In turn, the other aircraft - a 15.9-year-old, ex-Nordwind Airlines jet, remains registered in Bermuda. Both A321s remain parked at Cairo International airport for maintenance.

Global Airlines did not disclose any detailed plans beyond saying it would focus on religious traffic. It was incorporated in 2021.

JetBlue inks six more A220, A321neo sale/lease-backs

JetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) and BOC Aviation have entered into a new sale-and-leaseback agreement, this time covering three A220-300s and three A321-200neo through BOC Aviation (USA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Singapore-based, Hong Kong-listed lessor.

In a stock market filing, BOC Aviation said the finance leases of the aircraft are scheduled to close in 2024.

It is the fourth finance agreement between both parties, bringing the tally to 33 aircraft (twelve A321neo and twenty-one A220-300s).

ch-aviation reached JetBlue for comment on the sale-and-leaseback transaction, requesting information regarding the aircraft registrations and serial numbers involved in the agreement. The airline wasn’t immediately available.

According to ch-aviation fleets data, JetBlue currently operates twenty-six A220-300s, 130 A320-200s, sixty-three A321-200s, twenty-one A321-200NX, ten A321-200NX(LR)s, and fifty-three E190s. The ch-aviation fleets ownership module shows the airline owns around three-quarters of its fleet.

Meanwhile, BOC Aviation owns 426 aircraft, including eighteen A220s, eighty-three A320ceo, 122 A320neo, eight A330ceo, six A330neo, nine A350s, sixty-one B737NGs, sixty B737-8/9s, twenty-seven B777-300ERs, and five B787s. It also manages an additional 34 aircraft, and has 224 on order.

German Government puts last Airbus A340 up for sale

The German Air Force/Luftwaffe (GAF, Cologne/Bonn) has put its last A340-300 up for sale via an online auction, with bids due by February 15, 2024.

16+01 (msn 274) is parked at Cologne/Bonn airport, having been retired from government service in August 2023 after an embarrassing technical fault stranded Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock forcing her to cancel her visit to Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand. It has since been operating sporadic test flights over Germany, most recently on December 21, 2023, according to AirNav Radarbox ADS-B data.

The 1999 vintage aircraft has accumulated 54,572 flight hours and 8,367 flight cycles. It has four CFM International CFM56-5C engines.

The Luftwaffe will ferry the jet to its next operator. While the aircraft has already been partially demilitarised, several items will only be removed after the ferry flight. The A340 is currently outfitted with a hybrid cabin featuring 24 full-flat business class seats in the executive section and 70 economy class seats in the aft.

The Luftwaffe planned to retire the two ex-Lufthansa A340-300s it operated in early 2024 but accelerated their exit after the August 2023 snafu. Sistership 16+02 (msn 355) was sold last year to an undisclosed customer in the United States and has since been re-registered as N577TA and remains parked at Roswell airport.

The two A340s were replaced with three brand-new A350-900s.

Airbus delays A321neo(XLR) induction to 3Q24

Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) has reportedly warned its customers that aircraft delivery delays will persist through at least early 2025, according to Reuters' sources. Aircraft due in late 2024 and early 2025 could be delivered a few months behind schedule.

While the carrier declined to comment, sources indicated that supply chain issues related to various parts have persisted. During an annual press conference, the manufacturer confirmed that the first A321-200NY(XLR) is now scheduled to enter into service in the third quarter of 2024, as opposed to the second quarter planned previously.

"We are finalising the [certification] documents, coming close to the certification. We need to close all of them, and there are thousands. So far, we have been planning the entry into service in Q2 2024, we have a slight delay, so it's shifting from Q2 to Q3 this year but we're very close to the entry into service and that's something we have also discussed with our customers, and for most of the aircraft, it doesn't change the delivery dates," Chief Executive Guillaume Faury said.

Airbus plans to deliver "a handful" of XLRs this year before ramping up production in 2025.

"We have as many bottlenecks as we have suppliers," he said, stressing that the specific nature of the bottlenecks depended on individual suppliers and their environment. "There is a lot of complexity, not a single bottleneck that is to be resolved. We're trying to find the right sweet spot between the very strong demand we have and the many, many bottlenecks on the supply side."

One of the complex issues is about engines. Although Faury stressed it was not the only one, he underlined that Airbus was "not happy" with the on-wing time of Pratt & Whitney PW1500G engines on the A220, but said that demand was proof that those issues had not dampened customers' appetites.

Airbus has grown its supply chain workforce by 150% over the last two years, Faury explained.

The current bottlenecks affect all aircraft families. While the A320neo Family comprises the majority of Airbus's deliveries and is thus bound to be affected, it is currently ramping up its A220 and A350 assembly rates much more rapidly, which thus creates pressure on these types.

Animawings has new owner and plans A220s/A320neos

On 15 February 2024, Aegean announced it has sold its 51% stake in Animawings to Romanian company Momento Group, which is now the sole owner of the airline. As a result of the sale of its shares, Animawings is also returning both its leased A320s to the Greek carrier. YR-AGA (3162) was returned on 27 December 2023 and is now flying again as SX-DGI, while YR-AGB (3316) is currently at Bucharest and being prepared for its return.

Once both aircraft are returned, Animawings will not have any plane in the fleet until March/April, when it is planning to take delivery of two leased Airbus A220-300s. It's currently unclear where the aircraft are sourced from.

According to its new owner, Animawings plans to grow the fleet to twelve aircraft in the coming three years and is specifically mentioning more A220s but also the A320neo as types

A321N KLM 640KM to introduce a slightly updated livery on the A321neo

On 13 February 2024, KLM announced it will introduce a slightly updated livery on its upcoming Airbus A321neos. The "swoop" downwards will now go lower, which means the dark blue line will be under the nosedome of the aircraft. Today, this line is over the nose of the aircraft. In the press-release, KLM states that having a nose in a single colour makes nosedome replacements easier. The new A321neos will also feature the raccoon-mask around the cockpit windows. It's unclear if the modification will also be transferred to other types in the fleet.

KLM is expecting to take delivery of four A321neos this year, which are all leased via CDB Aviation:

  • A321-251NX PH-AXA (11895)
  • A321-251NX PH-AXB (12144)
  • A321-251NX PH-AXC (12238)
  • A321-251NX PH-AXD (12254)

The A321neo will be equipped with 227 seats, featuring 197 economy seats and 30 business class/economy comfort seats.

On 26 August 2024, KLM will launch commercial flights and the first destinations will be Berlin, Copenhagen and Stockholm. After delivery of the second aircraft, KLM will add Edinburgh, London-Heathrow and Paris-Charles de Gaulle as next destinations.
