South African Airways details new A350 long-haul plans

South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) has long-term plans to reintroduce A350 operations to resume most long-haul routes it was flying before the Covid-19 pandemic, says interim chief commercial officer, Tebogo Tsimane.

To start with, the state-owned airline plans to use its leased A330-300s to launch two long-haul routes – to Sao Paulo Guarulhos (Brazil) and Perth International (Australia) - by the end of the current financial year ending March 31, 2023, he said on a recent Travel News Weekly webcast.

A second phase will see the national carrier resume flights to Frankfurt International (Germany), London Heathrow (UK), Washington Dulles and New York JFK (USA) with A350s. It is also looking at routes in the pipeline before it entered bankruptcy in December 2019 and stopped all commercial flights in 2020, including another gateway to Australia – probably Melbourne Tullamarine – but "this would take a while," he said.

SAA previously operated four A350-900s between October 2019 and August 2020, including former Air Mauritius aircraft and two ex-Hainan Airlines aircraft leased from Avolon, the ch-aviation fleets history module shows.

"The routes that we've picked for this year are the routes that will be easier and quicker for us to start. They do not require the type of investment that will take us long," he explained.

Apart from restarting long-haul operations, the state-owned carrier also plans to add schedules to more coastal destinations, including between Cape Town and Durban, Johannesburg and George, and Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth, Tsimane disclosed.

SAA resumed commercial flights on September 23, 2021, as a vastly diminished carrier after a ZAR10.5 billion rand (USD570.3 million) bailout with a small fleet of six aircraft comprising three A319-100s leased from Castlelake, two A320-200s leased from Goshawk, and one A330-300 leased from Aero Capital Solutions. With the addition of three more A320-200s leased from GECAS, the fleet has since grown to ten aircraft, which includes one in-house A340-300 used as a spare, ch-aviation fleets advanced data reveals. The flag carrier operated 44 aircraft before it entered voluntary administration. Its business rescue plan foresaw a fleet of 26 aircraft by December 2021, comprising ten "small narrowbodies" [presumably regional aircraft], nine narrowbodies, and seven widebodies.

The airline initially resumed services on one domestic route between Johannesburg O.R. Tambo and Cape Town and on five regional routes: Accra (Ghana), Harare International (Zimbabwe), Kinshasa N'Djili (DRC), Lusaka (Zambia), and Maputo (Mozambique). It has since introduced services to Durban King ShakaBlantyre and Lilongwe (Malawi), Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), Mauritius, and Windhoek International (Namibia).

The airline is to receive another ZAR1 billion (USD) state bailout to settle a portion of the outstanding obligations on the implementation of its business rescue plan. The funds will be used to cover outstanding liabilities, specifically those relating to the final dividend payment to creditors and the refund of legacy unflown ticket revenue dating back to the pre-business rescue period in December 2019.

Commenting on the latest bailout, SAA's Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, John Lamola, stated: "SAA's operations have progressed positively since the airline emerged from business rescue, and as reported to Parliament earlier this month, SAA is no longer technically insolvent, a milestone which we reached a year earlier than projected".

Chief Financial Officer Fikile Mhlontlo added: "SAA has reached a point where we cover our operating costs. It must be emphasised that the allocation announced relates only to historical debt. These funds are not meant to bolster the business plan we are currently executing".

The airline explained that the ZAR1 billion allocation was part of ZAR3.5 billion (USD190 million) that its administrators had ring-fenced into a receivership. "The total balance expected from National Treasury has been reduced to ZAR2.586 billion (USD140.4 million). The airline will continue to negotiate with National Treasury for the balance of the funds and cooperate with all the conditions that may accompany the flow of these funds," it stated.

Takatso, the government's preferred strategic equity partner for the semi-privatisation of SAA, said the allocation fell short of clearing the historical debt, which the government has undertaken to do as one of the conditions for finalising the transaction that has been negotiated for almost two years since first announced in June 2021. "The partial fulfilment of this obligation is not what Takatso Aviation had expected. We will therefore have to assess the impact thereof on the progress of the transaction," it stated.

Lamola previously told ch-aviation that SAA would double its leased fleet to 12 aircraft by April 2023 as part of a fleet and intercontinental route expansion plan to be implemented irrespective of delays or even indefinite postponement of the privatisation deal with Takatso.

He said by April 2023, the fleet would consist of ten A320-200s, one A330-300, and another wide-body (A350) for intercontinental routes.

Air Senegal cancels A220-leases

According to Italian aviation news site ItaliaVola, Air Senegal has decided to cancel its lease-agreement with Macquarie AirFinance for five Airbus A220-300s. The reason for the cancellation is the continuous grounding of its single A220 and the late delivery of two new A220-300s, which were scheduled to occur in December last year. The late delivery and grounding of its single aircraft of the type is due to issues with the Pratt & Whitney PW1100 Geard Turbo Fan-engines.

Although issues with the engines have been resolved according to Pratt & Whitney, supply chain restraints prevent a quick upgrade to already produced engines. Air Senegal is not the only customer impacted by these engine issues. KLM cityhopper, for instance, has seven of its fifteen Embraer E195-E2s grounded, which use the same type of engines as the Airbus.

Air Senegal took delivery of its first, and now most likely, A220-300 on 27 December 2021. Now, the aircraft, registered 6V-AOA (55089), has been parked at the airline's base at Dakar since 19 November of last year.

The airline is now considering its options and is actively considering the Embraer E195-E2, although is wary of this option due to the similar engines, as well as that it has less range than the A220-300.

Edelweiss Air eyes A320neos and A350s

In an interview with German aviation news site AeroTelegraph, the CEO of Edelweiss Air has outlined a few things regarding the airline's future fleet needs.

With mother Swiss selecting the Airbus A350, Edelweiss also eyes the same type to secure the synergies between the two airlines. Although its A340s could continue to fly until 2031, Edelweiss is looking to replace them in 2026 and 2027 with the A350. Today, the airline is flying with four A340-300s with one more to join in the coming months.

For its narrowbody fleet, Edelweiss is looking into bringing in the A320neo, with a possible introduction of 2025. Currently, its operating fourteen A320s. Some of them are relatively young but five of these are more than 20 years old.

Air Arabia to wet lease three A320/1ceo for Summer 2023

Air Arabia Maroc (3O, Casablanca Mohamed V) has signed a wet lease agreement with Bulgaria's Fly2Sky (F6, Sofia) for three A320ceo Family aircraft covering the Summer 2023 season.

"We are thrilled to partner with Air Arabia and support their growth by providing them with additional aircraft during the busy summer season. The three aircraft deal is a testament to the strong relationship between Fly2Sky and its partners with a focus on providing the highest quality of service," Fly2Sky Chief Commercial Officer Aleksandrs Gusevs said.

The Bulgarian ACMI/charter specialist said the contract would cover a mix of A320-200s and A321-200s but did not specify the exact split. It did not respond to ch-aviation's request for added colour. The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Fly2Sky's fleet comprises two A320s and two A321s, with an additional A320 due to deliver shortly.

The Moroccan unit of the Emirati LCC group operates nine A320-200s. Fly2Sky did not reveal where the wet-leased aircraft would be based. Air Arabia Maroc has bases at Casablanca Mohamed VFesNador, and Tangiers airports.

Tata-owned Air India to acquire 250 Airbus aircraft

Tata-owned Air India to acquire 250 Airbus aircraft

  • A350 aircraft of choice for Air India’s renaissance in long haul travel
  • A320 Family to be the cornerstone of Air India’s domestic and regional fleet

Mumbai, 14 February 2023 – The Tata Group-owned Air India has announced its commitment to order 250 Airbus aircraft to boost its domestic and international operations. The commitment includes 140 A320neo and 70 A321neo single-aisle aircraft as well as 34 A350-1000 and six A350-900 wide-body jets that will mark a new era for the country as the all-new, long-range aircraft celebrates its debut in the Indian market.

The order aims to both modernise and expand the airline’s fleet with the objective of creating a larger and premium full-service carrier that will cater to the growing travel demand in the region. Deliveries are set to commence with the first A350-900 arriving by late-2023.

“Airbus has been a longstanding partner of Air India, and these new aircraft will play an important part in delivering Vihaan.AI, Air India’s comprehensive transformation and growth strategy,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO and MD, Air India. “A core element of this transformation is the significant expansion of our network, both domestically and internationally, coupled with the elevation of our on-ground and onboard product to world-class standards. This order marks the start of a new chapter for both Airbus and Air India.”

“This is a historic moment for Airbus and for Air India. India is on the verge of an international air travel revolution and we are honoured that our partnership with the Tatas and our aircraft solutions will write that new chapter for the country’s air-connectivity,” says Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International. “The A350’s unique capability will unlock the pent-up potential of India’s long-haul market, its technology, long reach and second to none comfort will enable new routes and passenger experience with better economics and enhanced sustainability. Alongside the A350s, the A320 Family fleets will be the efficient, versatile asset to continue democratising and decarbonising air travel in the country – from domestic, regional, up to international levels.”

Christian Scherer adds: “We salute Air India for its visionary strategy, picking the two reference aircraft types in each of their categories. We are thrilled and humbled to see these aircraft become the cornerstones of Air India’s renaissance. This fleet will propel the airline globally where it deserves to be - with the best.

Over the next decade, India will grow to have the largest population in the world, its economy will expand the fastest among the G20 nations, and a burgeoning middle class will spend more on air travel. As a result, passenger traffic in India will grow fast, including on the long-range markets in the U.S., Europe and Asia-Pacific that the A350 is well positioned to serve.

The A350 is the world’s most modern and efficient wide-body aircraft in the 300-410 seater category. The A350’s clean sheet design includes state-of-the-art technologies and aerodynamics delivering unmatched standards of efficiency and comfort. Its new generation engines and use of lightweight materials bring a 25 per cent advantage in fuel burn, operating costs and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, compared to previous generation competitor aircraft.

The aircraft offers a 3-class configuration cabin that is the quietest of any twin-aisle and offers passengers and crew the most modern in-flight products for the most comfortable long-range flying experience.

The A321neo is the longest-fuselage member of Airbus’ best-selling, single-aisle A320 Family, comfortably seating 180 to 220 passengers in a typical two-class layout, and as many as 244 in a higher-density arrangement. The A320neo has already set the standards as the world’s most comfortable short-to-medium-haul aircraft that typically accommodates from 140 to 170 passengers, with a maximum capacity of up to 180 travellers. Its environmental performance allows for at least 20 per cent less fuel burn and CO2 emissions as well as 50 per cent noise reduction, compared to previous generation aircraft.
