Lagos, Nigeria - Nigerian low-cost startup Green Africa Airways has signed a provisional agreement with Airbus to acquire 50 Airbus A220-300 jets.
The order commitment by the African carrier was announced by the European planemaker on Feb. 13. The planes will be powered by Pratt & Whitney's PW1500G engines.
The airline had also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Boeing for 100 737 MAX jets in late 2018. If materialized, the A220 order will be the largest ever order for the type in Africa at a time.
Lagos-based African carrier proceeds an ambitious growth plan to become the largest low-cost operator in the continent. No delivery date has been revealed for the 20 A220-300s. Both A220 and 737 MAX orders need to be firmed up by the company before deliveries start.
