Incident: THY A333 at Port Harcourt on Dec 31st 2019, runway excursion, tyre damage

By Simon Hradecky, created Tuesday, Dec 31st 2019 17:55Z, last updated Tuesday, Dec 31st 2019 18:21Z A THY Turkish Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration TC-LOL performing flight TK-627 (dep Dec 30th) from Istanbul (Turkey) to Port Harcourt (Nigeria), suffered a number of damaged tyres upon landing in Port Harcourt at about 03:30L (02:30Z). Sources claim the captain landed the aircraft next to the runway due to confusion of runway lights (edge lights confused for center line lights). Local media claim citing Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority NCAA that the aircraft sustained substantial damage. Nigeria's NCAA confirmed the occurrence rated a serious incident, Nigeria's Accident Investigtion Board is going to investigate. The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Port Harcourt about 15 hours after landing. The return flight TK-628 was cancelled. LOT Polish leases two Airbus A340 from Air Belgium

Poland, Warsaw - The Polish flag carrier LOT is leasing two Airbus A340-300 from Air Belgium.

LOT Polish will operate the four-engined widebody jets between Warsaw and Toronto until the end of October 2020.

Air Belgium will send both aircraft to LOT with their crews. The Polish carrier already has 15 Dreamliners (eight Boeing 787-8 and seven Boeing 787-9) in the fleet for its long-haul routes.

But the company foresees additional demand for long-haul destinations from Warsaw in 2020.

Air Belgium has four Airbus A340-300 jets in its fleet. They are operated on the airline's Guadeloupe and Martinique routes, but they also regularly fly for third parties. For instance, Surinam Airways often used the A340s of Air Belgium for scheduled flights between Paramaribo and Schiphol.

A SWISS A330-300 was forced to return due to broken toilets

Zurich, Switzerland - A Miami bound Swiss International Air Lines flight had to return to the departure airport in Zurich when the crew noticed the all toilets in the aircraft were broken.

On December 20, a SWISS International Airlines flight from Zurich to Miami was forced to return after three hours from the departure due to the broken toilets.

The aircraft was over Atlantic, west of Ireland, when the problem was discovered. The pilots of the SWISS Airbus A330-300 decided to return to Zurich when the problem was reported by the cabin crew.

Technicians fixed the broken toilets of the aircraft at the Zurich Airport. The problem was identified as a defect in the wastewater system, which took around four hours to fix.

The flight eventually took off from Zurich for Miami again with eight hours of schedule delay.

“Of course, it’s very unpleasant when something like this happens,” a Swiss International Air Lines spokesperson told the Swiss news agency Keystone-SDA.

Spirit Airlines firms order for 100+50 A320neo Family jets

Spirit Airlines (NK, Fort Lauderdale Int'l) has firmed up a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) covering a total of up to 150 A320neo Family jets.

The Florida-based ultra-low-cost-carrier said in a stock market filing that it had signed a finalised deal on December 20. The purchase includes 100 firm order jets - A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo jets - as well as 50 additional options. Deliveries of the firm ordered aircraft will run through 2027.

"We went through an extensive fleet evaluation process and determined that the fuel-efficient A320neo family of aircraft was the best option to support our continued growth as we expand our network,” Scott Haralson, Spirit Airlines’ Chief Financial Officer, said.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, Spirit currently operates thirty-one A319-100s, sixty-four A320ceo, twenty A320neo, and thirty A321ceo. In 2020 and 2021, Spirit anticipates taking delivery of forty-eight A320neo.

As of November 30, 2019, it had 38 additional A320neo jets on order from Airbus.

Air Macau takes delivery of first A321neo

Air Macau (NX, Macau Int'l) inducted its first A321-200neo during a ceremony at Macau Int'l Airport on Tuesday, December 24.

Though B-MBQ (msn 9263) was handed over on December 13, it was subsequently ferried to Hong Kong Int'l for completion before heading to Macau on December 21. Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows it has already been deployed into service on flights to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Seoul Incheon, and Hanoi.

The twinjet is the first of two such aircraft to be leased from Air Lease Corporation. The second of the pair will deliver in May 2020. Air Macau is expecting a further three A321neo to deliver from AerCap between November 2020 and October 2021.

All five aircraft are powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1133G-JM motors and feature 12 seats in business class and 186 in economy class.

Air Macau currently operates two A319-100s, six A320-200s, three A320-200neo, and ten A321-200s. According to the ch-aviation schedules module, the A321s are currently deployed on routes to Thailand, China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Viet Nam.

Chief executive Hong Chen has previously alluded to using the A321neo's range to open up new services to Australia, India, and Japan
