Airbus Updates No.3424

 Nordwind Airlines adds a 1st A321neo

On 12 June, Nordwind Airlines took delivery of its first A321neo, VQ-BJC (7694). The aircraft has previously been in use with Holiday Europe as LZ-HEH (2020-2021), Onur Air as TC-OED (2019-2020) and WOW Air as TF-SKY (2017-2019). It is leased via Air Lease Corporation and conducted its first commercial flight a day later.

It's unclear if more A321neos will follow soon. Next to this A321neo, the airline's fleet also consists of ten A321s, three A330-200s, thirteen B737-800s, five B777-200s and three B777-300ERs.

Nordwind Airlines was founded in 2008 and has its base at Moscow-Sheremetyevo Airport. It's predominantly a leisure airline and serves more than 80 destinations. It also owns Ikar, which flies under the Pegas Fly-brand.

 Airhub Airlines adds 1st A340

Airhub Airlines has added its first A340 to the fleet. The aircraft, an A340-300 currently registered as F-WBTJ (668), was delivered on 16 June and will undergo last preparations at Siauliai in Lithuania. It will be registered as 9H-BOB and will be put into service before the end of next month. Previously this Airbus was in use with Air Tahiti Nui as F-OLOV. It was operated between 2005 and 2019, was in storage at Teruel between February 2019 and December 2020 and at Amman for heavy maintenance between December 2020 and June 2021.

Airhub Airlines is the Maltese subsidiary of GetJet Airlines and was launched in 2020. It also has a single A320 in the fleet. Three more A340s are to follow in the coming months, which the company will deploy on ACMI-charters as well as "phreighter"-flights.

Airbus Updates No.3422

Lufthansa Puts 12 Airbus A340s Up For Sale

Lufthansa has officially put 12 of its Airbus A340-600s put for sale. The jets were sent for long-term storage by the flag carrier in May 2020 and have since been formally retired. Considering all these planes are only 12 to 18 years old, they certainly could find use with a new operator, if one is willing.

For sale

According to Aerotelegraph, Lufthansa is putting up 12 of its former Airbus A340-600s for sale to prospective buyers. The airline operated a total of 17 of these four-engined jets before the pandemic broke, all of which are currently parked in long-term storage at Teurel, a Spanish aircraft graveyard. This January, Lufthansa confirmed that these birds would never fly for the airline again.

Over a year after being on the ground, Lufthansa has officially found the next step for these planes: a new owner. The carrier is selling 12 A340-600s, carrying registrations: D-AIHZ, D-AIHY, D-AIHX, D-AIHW, D-AIHL, D-AIHK, D-AIHH, D-AIHF, D-AIHE, D-AIHD, D-AIHC, and D-AIHB.

Despite their retirement, these A346s still have a lot of life in them. The youngest, D-AIHZ, open entered the fleet in May 2009, according to ch-aviation. Meanwhile, the oldest, D-AIHB, first arrived in November 2003.

With a mix of ages and uses, any new buyer could easily find years of use from these A340s. Moreover, the plane comes equipped with Lufthansa’s four-class, 252 seat layouts, including eight first class seats.

Notably, Lufthansa has opted not to sell aircraft ranging from 13 to 15 years old. It’s unclear why only the newest and oldest jets are going on sale.

While the A340-600s go up for sale, other Lufthansa widebodies have been scrapped instead. This includes several Boeing 747-400s in recent months. With little to no resale chances, these jets simply had no future left. However, in a statement, a Lufthansa spokesperson said about the A346s,

If the sale is successful, it will help Lufthansa recover some amount of cash and offset huge impairment charges from the retirement. As the carrier continues to face record losses, any infusion of funds will be considered a victory. However, there is a reason these aircraft were retired in the first place: inefficiency.

Gas-guzzling jets like the A340-600 have little place in a time when airlines are looking to maximize efficiency and reduce operating costs. In the best case, these planes will be picked up by private buyers or wet lease companies for future use. At the right price, operating these aircraft might just make some amount of fiscal sense.

Nigeria’s Ibom Air Takes Delivery Of Two Airbus A220s

Ibom Air has taken delivery of two Airbus A220 aircraft this month. These narrowbodies are on lease from EgyptAir and join the Nigerian airline’s five CRJ900 aircraft already in its fleet. The carrier is looking to grow with its state’s economy through the use of these planes.

Air Sinai A220

Young aircraft for a young airline

The two aircraft were formerly operated by Air Sinai on the outfit’s covert Tel Aviv routes. These deliveries mark two years of services for Ibom Air. The Akwa Ibom state government commenced operations with the carrier on June 7th, 2019, following a flight from Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo to Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Uniquely, this operator was the first state airline to be founded in Nigeria.

Ibom Air took delivery of three CRJ900s ahead of the launch of flights, which, according to ch-aviation, started to arrive from February 2019. Two more units of the regional jet were also delivered last year.

Now, the airline is looking to scale things up with two units of the praised A220. This aircraft has been receiving several accolades across the globe by airlines for its modern approach to short and medium-haul operations. Its high fuel efficiency and comfort are two of the factors that have left airlines such as SWISS, airBaltic, Delta Air Lines, Air Canada, and Korean Air taking on the type.

A grand occasion

Umaru Fintiri, the governor of Adamawa state, was at the scene to mark the arrival of the new aircraft in Uyo. He shared that these moves are growing the overall aviation industry, and by extension, unlocking the economy of the country.

At the delivery press conference, Fintiri concluded the following:

“This is one airline that has been growing from number to number and from strength to strength.”

According to Radarbox.com, registration SU-GFD, the first A220-300 to arrive, left Cairo on June 5th to land in Lagos on the same day. Follow this, SU-GFA flew into the capital of Nigeria on June 11th. Both aircraft left for Uyo yesterday.

Icelandic Carrier PLAY Reveals Stunning Airbus A321neo

When it comes to having a bold livery, Iceland’s PLAY is following in the footsteps of its spiritual predecessor, WOW Air. The latter had most of its jets painted in a striking all-purple livery. Now, just over two years after WOW’s collapse, PLAY is set to launch services with its first full-red A321neo aircraft. The airline shared photos of its first aircraft freshly painted in its new colors.

Other than the standard ICAO-mandated registration, Airbus A321neo wordmark, and airline logo, the aircraft will be a solid pinkish-red color. Photo: PLAY

Ready, player one!

On Sunday evening, PLAY posted some photos of its first aircraft, newly painted, on its Facebook page. The airline’s eight photos show the Airbus A321neo in a hangar with its shiny new livery. Engine covers seen in most of the photos indicate just how ‘fresh’ the aircraft’s paint job actually is.

Accompanying the photos was a blurb, partially in Icelandic. Referencing a 2011 science fiction novel (and 2018 movie), the blurb roughly translates to the following:

“Ready, player one! This one is in the competition and has an ambitious plan to help Icelanders paint the big cities red ❤️

PLAY will start its operations with an Airbus A321neo, registered TF-AEW. Photo: PLAY

About PLAY’s first aircraft

PLAY’s first aircraft is an Airbus A321neo registered as TF-AEW, which, according to data from ch-aviation, is out on lease. The actual owner of the jet is major aircraft lessor AerCap with data suggesting that it is on lease until at least 2026.

TF-AEW is three years old and first flew with Mexico’s Interjet in 2018. The aircraft was withdrawn from use at the end of March 2020 and returned to the care of its owner, AerCap. After some maintenance time in the United States, the A321 joined PLAY in May 2021.

The aircraft is configured to accommodate 192 passengers in an all-economy configuration, which looks to offer 34 inches of pitch at every seat. If this data is accurate, it would indicate a surprisingly generous pitch compared to other budget airlines operating the A321. Indeed, Wizz Air’s A321s are all configured with 239 seats, all having a pitch of just 28 inches.

Pay less, play more

Working towards its late-June launch date, the airline also revealed what its cabin crew members will be wearing. Flight attendants can be found wearing white sneakers and casual, comfortable red (or dark grey) outfits.

With its inaugural flight set to take place on June 24th, from Keflavik to London Stansted, it looks like the airline is indeed ready to play. The airline’s published destinations out of Keflavik airport also include Copenhagen, Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Alicante, and Tenerife.
