Airbus Updates No.2110

Avianca cancels 17 A320neo family aircraft, defers 35

Colombia's Avianca has cancelled deliveries of 17 Airbus A320neo family aircraft from a 100-aircraft order signed in 2015, and rescheduled deliveries of another 35 jets.
The fleet changes will reduce Avianca's fleet capital expenditure needs by more than $350 million over the next three years, says the Star Alliance carrier. Financial commitments from 2020 to 2022 will also reduce by more than $2.6 billion.
The 35 rescheduled aircraft will now be delivered from 2026 to 2028, instead of 2020 to 2022.
Prior to the orderbook changes, Avianca had 20 A319neos, 92 A320neos and 15 A321neos on order, Cirium's Fleets Analyzer shows.
The airline operates three A320neos and two A321neos. It had an in-service fleet of 190 aircraft as of end-2018.
Under an updated fleet plan, Avianca will receive three aircraft this year, down from six originally. It will take delivery of six aircraft (down from 20) in 2020, four (down from 23) in 2021, and four (down from 20) in 2022.
In 2023 and 2024 respectively, Avianca will take delivery of 20 aircraft each year as originally planned. It will also stick to an earlier plan of taking delivery of 19 aircraft in 2025.
Avianca will accept 15 aircraft in 2026, 14 in 2027 and six in 2028.
The airline has said previously that it was in talks to defer up to 50 aircraft to free up cash and reduce debt. Avianca is also streamlining its fleet under a company-wide plan to improve profitability. It has said it will phase out its entire Embraer 190 fleet this year.

AirAsia X delays A330-900 deliveries to 2Q20

AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) has postponed the first delivery of an A330-900 to the second quarter of 2020, while Thai AirAsia X (XJ, Bangkok Don Mueang) plans to take the first two leased -900s already in the second quarter of 2019, CAPA has reported.
Initially, AirAsia X was due to take the first -900 by the end of 2019.
The Thai long-haul low-cost unit will lease the two Airbus widebodies. As such, the deliveries will not affect the backlog of outstanding orders placed by AirAsia Group, which includes sixty-six firm -900s and a further thirty-four announced last year but still not confirmed.
AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said that the additional order from last year was still under consideration. The carrier will likely settle for around seventy-five units. The number of widebody -900s eventually confirmed will also depend on the number of A321-200neo and A321neo(LR)s AirAsia decides to take.
Ismail added that AirAsia X had worries about the performance of the Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines and wanted to use the data from its Thai unit for further analyses.
Following the revision of the plans, AirAsia X is generally not planning to take any new aircraft in 2019. The airline currently operates twenty-four A330-300s. It could, however, take one -300 from Indonesia AirAsia X (XT, Denpasar) in the third quarter of the year. The Indonesian unit is currently focusing on charter flights and terminated all scheduled services.
In turn, Thai AirAsia X will also add three -300s on top of the two -900s. It currently operates ten -300s.

Orders and Deliveries February 2019

The month in review: February 2019

Airbus booked an order in February for four A220s – the newest addition to Airbus’ single-aisle jetliner product line – and delivered 49 single-aisle and widebody aircraft to 33 customers during the month.
The A220 booking in February was from Air Vanuatu for two A220-100s and two A220-300s. As a result, Vanuatu island’s national flag carrier became the A220’s launch customer in the Pacific region.
Taking the February order and delivery activity into account – as well as cancellations – Airbus’ overall backlog as of 28 February stood at 7,390 aircraft.
