THE MONTH IN REVIEW: NOVEMBER 2015

The 169 orders logged by Airbus in November further boosted total bookings for its A320 new engine option (NEO) and current engine option (CEO) single-aisle Family product lines, while also expanding the order book for widebody A330ceo and A330neo jetliners. 

Airbus has passed the milestone of more than 1,000 aircraft booked in 2015 to date, with 1,007 net orders.

November’s deliveries of 61 aircraft to international customers involved all Airbus product lines currently in production, from its A320 Family to the A330, A350 XWB and A380.

Taking into account the month’s order and delivery volume – and factoring in conversions – Airbus’ overall backlog stood at 6,837 aircraft as of 30 November, marking another industry record (and corresponding to some 10 years of production).

The new business in November was paced by the twin-engine A320 Family, with a total of 135 bookings for A320/A321neo jetliners and orders for 15 A320/A321ceo aircraft. This was led by TAP Portugal’s acquisition of 24 A321neo and 15 A320neo aircraft in a transaction that includes the A321LR (thereby positioning the Portuguese carrier as a new customer for this long-range A320neo Family version).

Also in the month’s bookings were easyJet’s order for 30 A320neo and six A320ceo aircraft, and 30 A321neo jetliners for Korean Air – which becomes a new customer for the type, and marks this East Asian carrier’s first Airbus order of single-aisle jetliners in 40 years. Completing the November single-aisle orders were the purchase of 21 A321neo and nine A321ceo aircraft for VietJet of Vietnam; along with 12 A320neo and three A321neo versions by the International Airlines Group for Spain’s Iberia.

The single-aisle jetliner transactions in November once again confirmed the worldwide air transport industry’s move toward larger-capacity aircraft, with Airbus’ longest-fuselage A321 variant accounting for 87 of the month’s A320 Family orders.

Widebody acquisitions during November were comprised of 19 A330 Family aircraft booked by four customers, and involving four different versions of this versatile twin-engine product line. TAP Portugal signed a firm order for 14 A330-900neo jetliners (positioning it as a new A330neo customer), while two A330-200ceo aircraft were ordered by the International Airlines Group for Iberia (which will become a new operator of this type).

Ireland’s Aer Lingus – which also is a member of the International Airlines Group – will receive two A330-300s ordered in November, while an ACJ330-200 corporate jet was acquired by an unnamed private customer.

The month’s transactions brought Airbus’ total gross orders during the first 11 months of 2015 to 1,079 – composed of 825 A319/A320/A321neo aircraft, 102 A318/A320/A321ceo jetliners, 99 A330ceo versions, 39 A330neo aircraft, and 14 A350s. Taking year-to-date cancellations and conversions into account, net orders in 2015 stood at 1,007 as of 30 November.

Deliveries in November were composed of 47 A320 Family aircraft, 10 A330s (including a VIP A330-200), three A380s and one A350. Among the month’s deliveries was the 10^th A380 for British Airways. As of end-November, Airbus had provided a total of 24 A380 flagship airliners to customers during the first 11 months of 2015.

THE MONTH IN REVIEW: OCTOBER 2015

Contracts logged during October for 35 A350 XWB, A330 and A320 family aircraft raised Airbus’ total net bookings to 850 so far in 2015, and already above the company’s net order target for the entire year, while the month’s 49 deliveries involved jetliners from across its in-production product lines.

Included in the October order book were four A350-900s for Singapore Airlines, reaffirming its confidence in the Xtra Wide Body aircraft – which was further underscored by this international carrier’s selection of the newly-launched A350-900 Ultra-Long Range version for non-stop flights from Singapore to the U.S.

Also in October’s transactions were widebody orders for 30 A330-300s covered in a General Terms Agreement with China Aviation Supplies Holding Company (CAS) that firmed up a commitment signed in June. 

Completing the month’s new business was Aviation Capital Group’s order for an A321neo from the new engine option product line of Airbus’ best-selling single-aisle jetliner series.

Overall, Airbus’ net orders during the first 10 months of 2015 for the A320, A330 and A350 XWB families reached 850 aircraft, composed of 39 A319/A320/A321s in the current engine option (CEO) configuration; 687 NEO variants of the A319/A320/A321; 92 A330ceo and 25 A330neo jetliners; along with seven A350 XWBs.

The month’s 49 aircraft deliveries comprised 37 A320 Family aircraft, six A330s, four A350 XWBs and two A380s. This activity brings Airbus’ total deliveries so far this year to 495 jetliners, received by 81 customers.

Notable deliveries during the month included the initial A350 XWB to Finnair, positioning the airline as Europe’s first operator with this aircraft type.  Also provided in October was the first of three A330-300s for Indonesia’s Lion Air. Seating 440 passengers in a single-class layout, Lion Air’s A330s are to be used on long-range pilgrimage flights to Saudi Arabia, as well as on selected high-density domestic routes.

Taking the month’s orders and deliveries into account, Airbus’ backlog stood at 6,741 aircraft at the end of October, corresponding to some 10 years of production.  Since its creation, Airbus has logged more than 16,000 orders from across its jetliner families.

easyJet orders an additional 36 A320 Family aircraft

easyJet has signed a firm order for a further 36 A320 Family aircraft taking its cumulative order for the type to 451. The agreement for six A320ceo and 30 A320neo makes easyJet one of the world’s biggest airline customers for the A320ceo Family with 321 ordered and also for the A320neo with 130 on order.

In the year that easyJet celebrates its 20^th anniversary, earlier in April 2015, the airline took delivery of its 250^th A320 aircraft. As with other recent deliveries to easyJet, the A320 is equipped with the latest technology and fuel-saving Sharklets.

TAP Portugal orders 14 A330-900neo and 39 A320neo Family aircraft

TAP Portugal has signed a firm order with Airbus for 53 Widebody and single aisle aircraft including 14 A330-900neo, and 39 A320neo Family aircraft (15 A320neos and 24 A321neos). The aircraft will join TAP Portugal’s fleet as part of its fleet renewal announced by the airline’s new majority owner Atlantic Gateway. As part of the agreement, TAP Portugal is replacing its previous order of 12 A350-900s with the A330-900neo.

TAP Portugal is an all Airbus customer, currently operating 43 A320 Family aircraft and 18 Widebody Family aircraft. 

The A330-800neo and the A330-900neo are two new members of the Airbus Widebody Family launched in July 2014 with first deliveries scheduled to start in Q4 2017. The A330neo incorporates latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, aerodynamic enhancements and new cabin features. Benefitting from the unbeatable economics, versatility and high reliability of the A330, the A330neo reduces fuel consumption by 14% per seat, making it the most cost efficient, medium range Widebody aircraft on the market. In addition to greater fuel savings, A330neo operators will also benefit from a range increase of around 400 nautical miles and of course all the operational commonality advantages of the Airbus Family.                  

The A320neo Family incorporates latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklet wing tip devices, which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings from day one and 20 percent by 2020 with further cabin innovations. With more than 4,300 orders received from over 75 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured some 60 percent share of the market.

Ethiopian Airlines first A350 XWB takes shape

The first Airbus A350-900 for Ethiopian Airlines is taking shape on the Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Toulouse, France.  Ethiopian Airlines will be the first African A350 XWB operator when it takes delivery of the aircraft next year.

Ethiopian Airlines will operate 14 A350 XWB of which 12 are directly purchased from Airbus and two are on lease from AerCap, including this first aircraft.  

Mating of the various aircraft fuselage sections has begun and the vertical stabilizer (tail fin) has been attached.   Similarly, work has begun on joining the wings, and the horizontal tailplanes to the fuselage, after which its undercarriage will be fitted. All these activities are carried out in parallel with cabin interiors installation and the first electrical power–on, enabling a significant reduction in lead-time. Following this, the aircraft will undergo a comprehensive sequence of tests. Once those are complete, the aircraft will be painted, its engines installed and preparations for delivery will begin. 

The carrier will deploy the aircraft on its expanding route network linking the East African nation with Asia and America. The Airbus A350 XWB MSN2 will be arriving at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport on 11th November as part of its Middle East-Ethiopia demonstration flight tour.

The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) will bring a step-change in efficiency compared with existing aircraft in this size category, as it uses 25 per cent less fuel and provides an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions. To date, the A350 XWB has already won 787 firm orders from 41 customers worldwide.
