THE MONTH IN REVIEW: FEBRUARY 2015

The continuing popularity of Airbus’ single-aisle A320 Family – both in the CEO (current engine option) and NEO (new engine option) versions – was underscored by the 32 orders logged in February.  For the month’s deliveries, Airbus provided 46 jetliners to international customers from its A320, A330 and A380 product lines.

An unidentified customer booked 18 A320neo and five A320ceo aircraft in February, while nine A320neos were ordered by AirAsia.

Taking cancellations into account, Airbus’ 2015 net orders totalled 28 aircraft as of February 28.

The deliveries during February were composed of 37 jetliners from the A320ceo Family, eight A330s and one A380.  This included an A320 for Nepal Airlines in the airline’s move to an all Airbus jet fleet; along with the first new A330-200 directly purchased by Argentinian flagship carrier Aerolineas Argentinas as part of its fleet renewal strategy.

With the month’s order and delivery activity, Airbus’ backlog was 6,332 aircraft at the end of February.

Turkish Airlines orders four additional A330-200 Freighters

Renewed confidence in the aircraft to boost growth 

Turkish Airlines has signed a firm order for the purchase of four A330-200F freighter aircraft. Operated by Turkish Cargo, a brand of Turkish Airlines, the additional aircraft will help to further boost the company’s expansion in the cargo market.

Turkish Airlines already operates five A330-200F, and the additional order will enable them to quickly meet the growing cargo market demand. “The A330-200F freighter aircraft have demonstrated outstanding operational reliability and performance for our cargo transport operations. It is with this in mind that we chose to expand our freighter fleet with more A330-200F,” said Dr Temel Kotil, CEO of Turkish Airlines.“ “A prestigious customer like Turkish Airlines ordering the A330-200F for the third time shows a real vote of confidence in this aircraft to help further develop their cargo business,“ said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “The A330 Family is the most versatile family of aircraft on the market and the A330-200F is no exception, being the most flexible, reliable and cost-efficient freighter”

Turkish Airlines operates the largest Airbus fleet in the country with a total of 139 Airbus aircraft in service. These include 91 single aisle aircraft, two A310 freighters, 17 A330-200, 18 A330-300, five A330-200F and six A340s. 

Airbus aircraft share a unique cockpit and operational commonality, allowing airlines to use the same pool of pilots, cabin crews and maintenance engineers, bringing operational flexibility and resulting in significant cost savings.  

The A330-200F is capable of carrying a payload of 65 to 70 tonnes, with a range of up to    4,000 nautical miles. With unit costs similar to larger freighters, it is the ideal aircraft for opening new routes and developing networks with minimum risk. The technologically advanced design and continuous improvements since the programme launch make the A330-200F today’s most modern and efficient mid-size freighter.

New higher weight A330 variant paves the way for the A330neo

Just four months after entering the Final Assembly Line, and less than two months after its maiden flight, the first 242 tonne Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW) variant of the A330 rolled out of the paintshop in Toulouse, France in Delta Air Lines livery. 

This first, new higher weight variant of the A330-300 is powered by two GE CF6-80E1 engines and will be delivered this year to the new variant’s launch customer Delta Air Lines. 

Delta Air Lines is a major Airbus widebody customer, with 32 A330 Family aircraft (11 A330-200s and 21 A330-300s) in service today and 35 more on order (25 A330-900neo and 10 A330-300). In addition, Delta has equally 25 A350-900s on order. Delta also operates 126 A320 Family aircraft (57 A319ceo, 69 A320ceo) and has 45 A321ceo on order.

The A330 242 tonne MTOW is the platform for the future A330neo and offers more capability at lower operating cost with a range extended by up to 500 nautical miles and up to two percent reduced fuel consumption while also benefiting from today’s A330 operational reliability of 99,4 percent. The 242 tonne MTOW is capable of flying missions up to 15 hours.

ALC firms up order for 55 Airbus aircraft

Signals strong demand for Airbus’ latest A330neo and A321LR models

Air Lease Corporation (ALC), the Los Angeles based aircraft leasing company, has firmed up its order for 55 Airbus aircraft, comprising 25 A330-900neo and 30 A321LR - the very latest members of Airbus’ modern, fuel-efficient aircraft family.

ALC was first to sign up for the newest member of Airbus’ market leading widebody family, the A330neo, announcing a commitment for 25 A330-900neo during the launch at the 2014 Farnborough International Airshow. ALC was also the first to commit to the A321LR, the newest variant of the A321neo, after signing a Memorandum of Understanding for 30 at the launch in January 2015, increasing its commitment made for 60 A321neo at the 2014 Farnborough Airshow to 90 firm A321neo aircraft.

“We are proud to be adding these newest generation Airbus aircraft to our portfolio and to have played a part in launching these latest generation, efficient aircraft,” said Steven F. Udvar-Házy, Air Lease Corporation’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “We see significant market appetite for Airbus’ A321LR and A330neo models, offering operators exactly what they want - even more range, even better economics and superior level of passenger comfort.”

Including today’s announcement, ALC’s total firm orders for Airbus aircraft stands at 258, comprising 53 A320ceo Family, 140 A320neo Family, 15 A330 Family, 25 A350 XWB Family and 25 A330neo Family.

The A321LR, the latest member of the market leading A320neo Family, will be able to fly longer routes of up to 4,000 nm. The A321LR will provide additional flexibility as it will have the longest range of any single aisle airliner, making it ideally suited to transatlantic routes and enable airlines to tap into new long haul markets which were not previously accessible with current single aisle aircraft. With 206 passengers in a comfortable two-class layout, the A321LR offers the possibility for each passenger to carry up to three bags. First deliveries will start in 2019.

The A330-800neo and the A330-900neo are two new members of the Airbus Widebody Family launched in July 2014 with first deliveries in Q4 2017. The A330neo incorporates latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, aerodynamic enhancements and new cabin features. Benefitting from the excellent economics, versatility and high reliability of the A330, the A330neo reduces fuel consumption by 14% per seat, making it the most cost efficient, medium range Widebody aircraft on the market. In addition, A330neo operators will also benefit from a range increase of up to 400 nautical miles and all the operational commonality advantages of the Airbus Family.

Vietnam Airlines reveals livery of its first A350 XWB

The first A350 XWB for Vietnam Airlines has been rolled out of the Airbus paint shop in Toulouse on Friday 6th March, featuring the airline’s updated distinctive blue and gold lotus livery.

The aircraft, which will be leased from AerCap, is now entering the advanced stage of production. This will include installation of the engines, completion of cabin furnishing, and cockpit fitting, followed by ground and flight tests. The aircraft is scheduled for delivery in the middle of the year.

Vietnam Airlines will become the first Asian airline to fly the A350 XWB and the second operator in the world. Vietnam Airlines will acquire 14 A350 XWBs, including ten on order from Airbus and four under lease agreements. The carrier will operate its A350 XWB fleet on premium long haul routes, beginning with services between Hanoi and Paris.

The A350 XWB is the latest addition to the market-leading Airbus Widebody Family. The type sets new standards in terms of flight experience for passengers, operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness for airlines. At the end of February 2015, the A350 XWB had won 780 firm orders from 40 customers worldwide.

Aerolineas Argentinas receives first of four new A330-200s on order

Versatile, flexible, economic A330s to fuel Airline’s fleet renewal

Argentina’s flagship carrier, Aerolineas Argentinas, has taken delivery of their first new, directly purchased Airbus A330-200 aircraft as a part of the carrier’s fleet renewal strategy. The aircraft, equipped with GE engines, joins the airline’s existing fleet of 11 Airbus widebody aircraft, comprising four A330-200s and seven A340s.

“The addition of this new A330-200 to our wide body family will enable Aerolineas Argentinas, to redefine its long-haul network and enhance its international service offering,” said Dr. Mariano Recalde, President of Aerolineas Argentinas. “This new A330 not only shares commonality with our existing A330 and A340 airliners, it also offers exceptional operational flexibility with the right range and lowest costs. It will play a key role in our fleet renewal strategy, ensuring that we continue to offer our passengers the best in world class comfort and service levels.”

Aerolineas Argentinas will deploy its new A330 on starting on long haul routes from their Buenos Aires hub to Miami and New York City, and then Madrid in July 2015.

“The A330-200 will bring superior long-range flying capability, unmatched economics and excellent passenger appeal to Aerolineas Argentinas’ widebody fleet,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers. “Aerolineas Argentinas has partnered with Airbus for over two decades and we are delighted to see them base their long-range fleet renewal strategy on the popular A330.”

Aerolíneas Argentinas has been an Airbus operator since 1994 when the airline began flying the A310-300. In February 2013, Argentina’s national airline announced their order for four Airbus A330-200s to renew and consolidate its widebody fleet.

The A330 Family includes Freighter, VIP, and Military Transport/Tanker variants, has now attracted more than 1,400 orders. Over 1,100 A330 Family aircraft are flying with more than 100 operators worldwide. The A330 is one of the world’s most efficient aircraft with best in class operating economics. With numerous on-going product enhancements entering service in the coming years, the A330 Family remains the most cost-efficient and capable widebody aircraft, averaging operational reliability above 99 percent.

With more than 850 aircraft sold and a backlog of nearly 400, more than 550 Airbus aircraft are in operation throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. In the last 10 years, Airbus has tripled its in-service fleet, while delivering more than 60 percent of all aircraft operating in the region.

Narrative:
An Airbus A330-303, operated by THY Turkish Airlines, suffered a runway excursion accident upon landing at Kathmandu-Tribhuvan Airport (KTM), Nepal.
Flight TK726 was a regular passenger service from Istanbul-Atatürk International Airport (IST) to Kathmandu, Nepal. The flight was the first international flight to scheduled to arrive that morning. After descending from cruising altitude, it entered a holding pattern at FL210 at 06:12 hours local time (00:27 UTC) until about 07:00 (01:15 UTC) when it was cleared for a VOR/DME approach to runway 02. This approach was abandoned at about the Missed Approach Point at 1DME and the aircraft performed a go around. The aircraft circled and positioned for a second approach to runway 02. After landing the aircraft went off the left side of the runway. It ran onto soft soil and the nose landing gear collapsed.

ARKIA Israeli Airlines, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for up to four A330-900neo aircraft. The commitment makes ARKIA the first Airbus widebody customer in Israel and the first customer for the type in the region. The aircraft will help ARKIA to expand their growing operations into long haul business and leisure markets with the world’s most popular wide-body. The A330-900neo is the most cost-efficient in its size category, offering a reduction in fuel burn of 14 percent per seat, an increase in non-stop flying range of up to 400 nautical miles and the lowest possible maintenance costs.

ARKIA’s A330-900neo will join the four A321neo aircraft ordered at the Farnborough International Airshow in 2012. With Airbus’ Cross Crew Qualification concept, pilots and engineers can transition from the single-aisle A320 Family, to the twin-aisle A330 quickly. Airlines can operate and maintain both types with the same pool of pilots and engineers. The A330neo also offers the latest in In-Flight entertainment either 4^th generation or light IFE. Moreover, it offers connectivity to the ground should it be mobile telephony and internet access services and in parallel on board wireless services enabling passengers to access Wi-Fi content and services on their personal electronic devices.

“The A330-900neo will be a key asset to help us grow efficiently on highly competitive international long-haul routes from and to Israel.
