THE MONTH IN REVIEW: NOVEMBER 2014

The 248 orders logged by Airbus in November further boosted the company’s business volume and brought its backlog to more than 6,000 aircraft for the first time ever.  Deliveries during the month reached a total of 61, reflecting Airbus’ sustained production pace.

Widebody bookings in November were for the A350 XWB and A330; while single-aisle orders involved A320 Family products in both their current engine option (ceo) and new engine option (neo) variants.

U.S.-based Delta Airlines placed a firm order for 25 A350-900s, while Air Mauritius firmed up its acquisition for four A350-900s.  This brings overall A350 XWB bookings to 778 for 41 customers.

Completing the month’s widebody orders were 25 A330-900s for Delta Air Lines, expanding the carrier’s fleet that currently has 32 A330s and 126 A320 Family aircraft; along with a booking for 15 A330-900s by CIT Group Inc., a global leader in transportation finance.  The Delta and CIT A330-900 transactions were the first firm orders for Airbus’ A330neo variant of the popular twin-engine airliner, which was launched in July. 

Transactions for single-aisle A320 Family products logged in November involved Azul Brazilian Airlines’ purchase agreement for 25 A320neo and 10 A321neo aircraft; CIT Group Inc.’s order for five A321ceo airliners; along with 10 A321neo versions for JetBlue Airways and nine A321ceo aircraft for Frontier Airlines – both of the United States. 

Three major A320 Family orders were booked with undisclosed customers.  One involved 30 A320neo, 14 A320ceo and six A319ceo jetliners; another was for 30 A320ceo aircraft, while the third encompassed 15 A320neo, 13 A320ceo, 10 A321ceo and two A319ceo airliners.

The month’s new business brought Airbus’ total net orders in 2014 to 1,031 aircraft as of 30 November, which takes into account cancellations during the year.

November’s deliveries were composed of 46 A320 Family jetliners, 12 A330s and three A380s, bringing the 2014 delivery total to 554 aircraft that were received by 85 customers.  This included the first directly-purchased jetliner by Vietnam’s VietJet Air from Airbus (an A320ceo), and the initial A330-200 Freighter directly acquired from Airbus by Qatar Airways.

Based on the month’s activity, Airbus’ backlog at the end of November stood at the record total of 6,036 jetliners remaining to be delivered – an all-time high for the company, and an industry record.

LAN takes delivery of first A321

LAN Airlines, part of LATAM Airlines Group celebrated the arrival of its first A321 today at Santiago’s Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport. This marks a significant milestone as LATAM Airlines affirms its regional and global presence as the largest A320 operator in Latin America. The aircraft, the first of 48 of its kind ordered by the airline, will be operated on domestic routes within Chile and joins LATAM Group’s existing fleet of nearly 230 A320 Family aircraft in operation. 

The A321 aircraft ordered by LAN have a one-class configuration with 220 seats and feature a new LATAM Airlines Group’s cabin, which is a blend of LAN and TAM cabin designs. 

The A320 family’s largest member offers the lowest fuel burn, emissions and noise footprint in its class, and allows for an extended operating range of up to 3,200 nautical miles while carrying a maximum passenger payload; all of which will enhance the efficiency of LAN’s operations within Chile. 

The A320 Family is Latin America’s and the world’s best-selling single aisle product line with nearly 11,000 orders to date and more than 6,200 aircraft delivered to 400 customers and operators worldwide. Today more than 500 A320 Family aircraft are operated by airlines in Latin America.

CIT firms up order for 15 A330neo and five A321ceo aircraft

Strong momentum growing for Airbus’ new A330neo Widebody

CIT Group Inc. (NYSE: CIT), a global leader in transportation finance has firmed up its order for 15 A330-900neo aircraft and five A321ceo aircraft. CIT became one of the launch customers of the A330neo after signing its initial agreement in July 2014, at the Farnborough International Airshow.

The A330-800neo and the A330-900neo are two new members of the Airbus Widebody Family launched in July 2014 with first deliveries scheduled to start in Q4 2017. Benefitting from the unbeatable economics, versatility and high reliability of the A330, the A330neo reduces fuel consumption by 14% per seat, making it the most cost efficient, medium range Widebody aircraft on the market. Finnair orders eight additional A350 XWBs

Repeat order from a launch customer for Airbus’ new generation Widebody aircraft

Finnair, a launch customer for the A350 XWB, has signed an agreement, firming up the order for eight additional  A350-900s. Finnair was the first airline to select the A350 XWB and will be the first European airline in autumn 2015 to receive the all new Airbus Widebody. Finnair’s A350 XWBs will seat 297 passengers in a two class configuration. The aircraft will be deployed on Finnair’s long-haul routes to Asia and America.

Finnair currently operates an all Airbus fleet of 45 aircraft (30 A320 Family aircraft and 15 A330s/A340s). Finnair was launch customer of the A350, and in 2007 placed an order for 11 A350-900s, including an option for further eight. This agreement brings the total committed order to 19 A350-900s. The A350 XWB was designed above all for passengers’ comfort and well-being and will provide Finnair’s passengers with an excellent flight experience with the most advanced cabin with wider seats in both business and economy class.

The A350 XWB is the latest addition to the market-leading Airbus Widebody product line. Offering its customers a 25% reduction in fuel-burn, the all-new mid-size long-range A350 XWB Family aircraft can seat up to 369 passengers in a typical two-class layout. The A350 has carbon fibre fuselage and wings and sets new standards in terms of passenger experience, operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. At the end of November 2014, the A350 XWB had won 775 orders from 40 customers worldwide.

Azul orders 35 A320neo

Brazilian airline complements fleet with A320s for domestic long haul flights

Azul Brazilian Airlines has signed a purchase agreement for 35 A320neo Family aircraft. The airline, which is also leasing another 28 A320neo aircraft, has chosen the A320neo Family to carry out domestic long haul flights and high density routes, including Campinas – Salvador and Campinas – Recife. For Azul, an important driver for selecting the A320neo was the aircraft’s low operating costs and excellent fuel efficiency.  Azul has selected CFM engines for their A320neo fleet.

“Azul is an airline that truly serves all of Brazil. With more than 100 destinations , Azul will soon offer even more seats on our longer haul flights, allowing us to reduce operating costs,” said David Neeleman, CEO and Founder of Azul. “In addition to its market leading economics, which will allow Azul to stimulate new demand, the A320neo is also a perfect complement to our E-Jet fleet, giving us additional seats and capacity that can be dedicated to strategic projects like TudoAzul, Azul Viagens and Azul Cargo.”

In April, Azul announced that it would start operating long haul flights by early December. The airline expects to fly new international routes with a fleet of 12 leased wide body Airbus aircraft, including seven Airbus A330-200 and later five Airbus A350-900 equipped with Rolls-Royce engines.

Airbus has obtained regulatory approval for training of A350 XWB airline pilots in accordance with the original goal of an A330/A350 “Common Type Rating” (CTR). This will enable Azul pilots to benefit from reduced training time in the transition from one Airbus jetliner model to another, resulting in significant benefits for airline profitability, pilot productivity and scheduling flexibility.‎

Firm orders for the NEO reached over 3,200 aircraft from 60 customers, representing a 60 percent market share in its category.

Frontier Airlines orders nine Airbus A321ceo aircraft

Deal marks customer’s first order for largest A320 Family member

Frontier Airlines has placed a firm order for nine Airbus A321ceo (current engine option) aircraft. This is the first time Frontier has ordered the largest member of the Airbus A320 Family. The airline currently flies a fleet of 35 A319ceo, and 20 A320ceo aircraft. In addition, Frontier has on its order backlog 80 A320neo (new engine option) family aircraft. 

Including the order announced today, Frontier has a backlog of 89 Airbus single-aisle aircraft. The airline has not yet announced its engine selection or the seating configuration for its A321s. 

Frontier began its transition to an all-Airbus fleet when it took delivery of its first Airbus aircraft in 2001. Since that time, the Airbus single-aisle family has allowed the airline to expand its route network while minimizing operating costs.

Delta orders 50 Airbus widebody aircraft

25 A350-900 and 25 A330-900neo to join fleet of leading U.S. airline

Delta Air Lines has placed a firm order for 50 new Airbus widebody aircraft, 25 A350-900 and 25 A330-900neo aircraft. Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines will power the Airbus A330neo aircraft and Trent XWB engines will power Airbus A350 XWB aircraft.

“When the most successful U.S. airline today – a company that has flown passengers around the world for more than 80 years, has 80-thousand employees and 165 million customers in a year – says ‘yes we want 50 more of your widebody planes’, you can’t debate the fact that it is a massive endorsement of your product line,” said John Leahy, Airbus’ Chief Operating Officer – Customers. “Airbus is unique in offering an optimized long-range choice in aircraft that will allow Delta to continue to modernize its fleet and customize its use with the most efficient and comfortable aircraft available.”

Delta Air Lines currently flies both Airbus single-aisle and widebody aircraft, including 57 A319ceo and 69 A320ceo aircraft, plus 11 A330-200s and 21 A330-300s. In addition to the order announced today, Delta has an order backlog of 10 A330-300s and 45 A321ceo aircraft, bringing its total Airbus backlog to 105 aircraft. 

The A350 XWB is the latest addition to the market-leading Airbus widebody product line. Offering its customers a 25 percent reduction in fuel-burn, the all-new mid-size long-range A350 XWB Family aircraft can seat up to 369 passengers in a typical two-class layout. The A350 has a carbon fibre fuselage and wings and sets new standards in terms of passenger experience, operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. At the end of October 2014, the A350 XWB had won 750 orders from 39 customers worldwide. 

The A330 Family has now attracted more than 1,300 orders. Over 1,100 A330 Family aircraft are flying with more than 100 operators worldwide. The A330 is one of the world’s most efficient aircraft with best in class operating economics. Airbus has committed to continuously improving the program since the A330’s service entry. The company spends approximately 150 million euros each year on enhancements and incremental improvements for the A330 jetliner family. The newest evolution is Airbus’ A330neo, which builds on the A330’s proven economics, versatility and reliability while reducing fuel consumption by a further 14 percent per seat. Comprised of two versions – the A330-800neo and the A330-900neo – this aircraft incorporates latest-generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines with 112-inch diameter fan for a 10:1 bypass ratio, more seats and new cabin features. 

The A330, A350 XWB and A380 make up the Airbus widebody aircraft Family, which uniquely spans the 250 to over-500 seats segment.
