Qatar Airways negotiates mega Airbus order: report
PARIS — Qatar Airways is in advanced negotiations to place a giant order for 60 airliners built by the European firm Airbus, the Les Echos newspaper reported on Friday.

The order, which would be announced at the Le Bourget air show in June, would be for 50 A320 NEO aircraft, the re-engined version of the medium-range A320, and for 10 to 20 A380 superjumbo jets.

The airline would also place an additional 50 options to buy A320 NEO aircraft and options to buy an additional 10-20 A380 planes, the report said.

Until now, Qatar Airlines has ordered five of the superjumbo aircraft but has signalled that it intends to buy more this year...........

In April, Airbus logged a 100-aircraft boost to its 2011 order volume – which also served as an important endorsement for its A320 new engine option jetliner programme, while delivering 48 aircraft during the month.
The new business was ILFC’s firm contract for 100 A320neo Family aircraft, confirming a memorandum of understanding for this deal announced in March.  ILFC’s acquisition was listed on the Airbus order listing as 75 A320s and 25 A321s, with the leasing company also confirming its selection of Pratt & Whitney engines to power at least 60 of the aircraft.
With the ILFC booking, total Airbus A320 Family orders have surpassed the 7,000 milestone, reaching 7,025 as of 30 April.
Airbus delivered 39 jetliners from its A320 Family product line in April (composed of 31 A320s, four A319s and four A321s), including the first of five directly-purchased A319s for S.A.T. – the holding of Berlin-based carrier Germania.
Widebody deliveries to international customers during the month were composed of five A330-200s and three A330-300s; along with an A380 for Qantas Airways – bringing the total number of these 21st century flagship airliners provided for airline operators by Airbus to 46.

Accident: Windjet A319 at Palermo on Sep 24th 2010, touched down short of runway

By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, May 5th 2011 15:20Z, last updated Thursday, May 5th 2011 15:37Z
The Italian ANSV said in their preliminary report that the captain was pilot flying with the first officer assuming the duties of the pilot monitoring. The aircraft had descended to 5000 feet on approach to Palermo when the crew requested to fly around cloud formations to the northwest of the airport before the initial approach fix of the VOR/DME approach runway 07, that the aircraft had been cleared for. The diversion from the approach track was authorized and the aircraft stabilized on the VOR/DME approach track and profile at about 6DME PRS.

During the following descent the aircraft encountered a strong squall which reduced horizontal visibility. The aircraft impacted ground immediately before runway 25's end safety area (RESA), impacted the localizer antenna and continued on the runway 25 end safety area and runway 07 for about 850 meters before turning left off the runway and coming to a stop on soft ground to the left of the runway. The aircraft was immediately evacuated.

A number of passengers and crew reported minor injuries. The aircraft received such substantial damage, that the aircraft may be irrecoverable.

At 17:50Z Palermo's ATIS had reported winds from 060 degrees at 14 knots, visibility 4000 meters, moderate rain, cloud one to two octers ceiling 1800 feet, 3-4 octers ceiling 2200 feet, 5-7 octers ceiling 3000 feet, temperature 20 degrees C, dew point 18 degrees C, QNH 1000 hPa, windshear reported for runway 20.

A windshear warning was active from 16:50Z to 17:50Z: moderate windshear of 20 knots reported by an A321 between 1500 and 300 feet AGL.

By Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Sep 24th 2010 19:27Z, last updated Thursday, May 5th 2011 15:21Z

A Windjet Airbus A319-100, registration EI-EDM performing flight IV-243 from Rome Fiumicino to Palermo (Italy) with 124 passengers and 6 crew, was performing a VOR approach to Palermo's runway 07 in thunderstorms and windshear at approximately 20:00L (18:00Z). The airplane touched down about 400 meters (1300 feet) short of the runway, impacted the localizer antenna for the ILS runway 25 embedding parts of the antenna in its nose and came to a stop left of the runway in the area of the intersection of runway 07/25 and 02/20 with both main gear struts collapsed, an evacuation via slides was initiated. Three passengers received minor injuries in the evacuation, the airplane received substantial damage.

Italy's ANSV have launched an investigation.

In the evening of Sep 25th the ANSV reported, that the airplane impacted ground violently short of the threshold of runway 07. The black boxes were retrieved from the aircraft.

The airline reported, that the airplane encountered windshear causing it to veer off the runway.

The aerodrome was closed for about 42 hours. After the aerodrome re-opened all ILS approaches to runway 25 were unavailable leaving the airport with non-precision approaches to runway 07/25. ILS approaches are available to runway 20 (length 2074 meters/6800 feet, width 45 meters/150 feet).

At the time of the accident runway 07 (length 3326 meters/10900 feet, width 60 meters/200 feet) was in use. Only non-precision approaches are available to runway 07 (VOR).

Local aviation sources reported, that the airplane touched down about 400 meters/1300 feet short of the runway (localizer antenna 300 meters/1000 feet before the runway threshold). The tower could not see the aircraft, believed the airplane had gone down into the sea and called coast guard. Tracks on the runway suggest, that the main gear was still intact before the aircraft veered left off runway 07 just after the intersection with runway 02/20.

Accident: BH Air A320 at Verona on Sep 1st 2009, tail strike on takeoff

By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, May 5th 2011 13:53Z, last updated Thursday, May 5th 2011 13:55Z
The Italian ANSV reported in their preliminary report, that the flight had originated in Hurghada (Egypt) and was destined for Rome Fiuminichino via an intermediate stop in Verona.

At the time of departure from Hurghada the aircraft carried 77 passengers destined for Verona and 87 passengers for Rome. The passengers to Verona were mainly seated in the forward and central cabin, the passengers to Rome mainly in the central to aft cabin. The luggage for Verona had been stowed in the forward cargo compartment and the luggage for Rome in the aft cargo compartment.

After arrival in Verona the passengers for Verona disembarked and their luggage was unloaded, the passengers to Rome kept their seats and their luggage was not re-distributed.

A load and trim sheet was produced at Verona that showed the remaining passengers to Rome in different seat allocation than on the leg Hurghada-Verona. This was not detected by the crew nor did the crew consider to re-distribute the passengers.

The crew decided that no re-fuelling was necessary.

During the takeoff, as soon as the power levers were advanced for FLEX takeoff, the aircraft started an uncommanded early rotation causing a tail strike, the takeoff however was continued with the flight controls degradated to alternate and direct law. The aircraft became airborne at 113 KIAS, a stall warning activated immediately after takeoff and lasted for 5 seconds. The crew continued the departure and the climb until a master caution indicating a cabin pressurization fault activated, then the crew decided to return to Verona.

Inspections revealed substantial structural damage to the lower part of the tail fuselage compromising the pressurized compartment.

The preliminary investigation noted following findings:
- all baggage and cargo were located in the after (nr. 3) cargo compartment in accordance with the Load and Trim sheet;

- the 87 passengers with final destination Rome Fiumicino were seated as per their initial seat assignment given at Hurgada and not in accordance with the Load and Trim sheet prepared in Verona;

- the Load and Trim sheet approved by the captain, was prepared by Verona handling agent in order to respect the new mass and balance configuration requiring the remaining passengers seating to be considerably different from their seat assignment in the incoming flight

- the captain did not consider or did not notice that, based on the Load and Trim sheet, the remaining passengers should have been distributed in order to equally balance their seating on board in the three cabin areas; this resulted in having the passengers seated so as to occupy all the after cabin seats with only few passengers seated in the central and forward cabin

- the center of gravity position calculated considering the effective distribution of passengers and cargo on board, was outside the after operational envelope limit for takeoff.

Two safety recommendations were issued as result of the investigation so far.

By Simon Hradecky, created Tuesday, Sep 1st 2009 22:09Z, last updated Wednesday, Sep 2nd 2009 09:55Z

A BH Balkan Holidays Air Airbus A320-200 on behalf of Air Vallee, registration LZ-BHC performing flight DO-5379 from Verona to Rome Fiumicino (Italy), struck its tail onto the runway in Verona while becoming airborne. The crew decided to return to Verona.

The Italian National Agency for Aviation Safety (ANSV) launched an investigation stating, that the damage to the airplane prompted the agency to rate the occurrence an accident. According to ANSV the airplane was doing Verona-Rome-Hurghada.

According to the airport of Rome Fiumicino the airplane was due to arrive from Hurghada via an intermediate stop in Verona.

Sources at Verona Airport said, that the luggage of those passengers getting off at the stopover in Verona (arriving from Hurghada) had all been stored in the forward luggage hold, while luggage of passengers carrying on to Rome was in the rear luggage hold. The forward hold was therefore emptied during the stopover.

Korean Air places firm order for five more A330s

Eco-efficient A330 family remains the popular choice

Korean Air has placed a firm order with Airbus for five A330-200s.The latest purchase agreement increases the total numbers of A330s ordered by Korean Air to 30 aircraft, of which 23 have already been delivered. As with the existing Korean Air A330 fleet, the newly ordered aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitney PW 4000 engines.
"Korean Air's latest order underscores the ongoing success of the A330 with leading airlines worldwide," said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer Customers, Airbus. "Combining the highest levels of reliability, outstanding medium and long range capabilities and the lowest operating costs in its class, the A330 is proving time and time again that it is the most efficient aircraft in service today in the mid-size widebody category."
With a true wide-body fuselage creating very high comfort standards, the A330-200 is able to accommodate seat and class configurations to suit diverse customer requirements. It also has the excellent operational flexibility necessary to serve a wide range of route structures, providing operators with very low operating cost per seat.
Airbus has recorded over 1,100 orders for the A330 Family, with more than 750 aircraft currently flying with more than 90 operators worldwide. In addition to passenger aircraft, the A330 Family also includes freighter, VIP and military transport / tanker variants.

Deep Sea Search Uncovers Air France Black Box

Deep-sea search parties have found one of two flight data recorders from an Air France plane that crashed off the coast of Brazil in 2009, investigators said, reviving hopes of understanding what caused the crash.
French investigators said in a statement the flight data recorder, or black box, had been hauled up to the deck of a search boat.
The Airbus A330-200 plane crashed into the Atlantic off the northeast coast of Brazil en route to Paris from Rio de Janeiro in June 2009, killing all 228 passengers and crew on board after the flight hit stormy weather.
Officials from France's BEA air accident inquiry office said it was too early to say whether the black box, which records data from the plane's instruments but no voices, would yield any information.
"One thing that's clear is that even if the box does not look damaged on the photograph, we cannot say whether it works until we have opened it up," a BEA spokeswoman said.
"That requires very precise equipment and the analysis can only start in a Paris laboratory." She said search robots had already dived back to the Atlantic sea floor to try to find the second black box, which contains voice and sound recordings from the cockpit.
Pictures on BEA's website of the box before it was pulled to the surface showed an orange cylindrical object half-buried in sand.
The structure housing the recorder appeared to be intact and remarkably free of corrosion. The name of its manufacturer -- US electronics company Honeywell -- was clearly readable on the side as a robot arm was seen plucking the cylinder from the seabed.
The discovery came after long searches of a 10,000 square kilometre area of sea floor.
"This new step in the investigation is very significant as it may provide additional information as to the causes of this accident that remain unexplained to this day," Air France-KLM chief executive Pierre-Henri Gourgeon said.
Speculation about what caused the accident has focused on the possible icing up of the aircraft's Thales speed sensors, which seemed to give inconsistent readings before communication was lost.
Depending on how much data can be retrieved and how clearly it pinpoints the cause of the crash, lawyers say information from the black boxes could lead to a flood of liability claims.
Any fresh conclusions on the cause of the crash will also be fed into an ongoing judicial probe in which Airbus and Air France have both been placed under formal investigation.
