Brazil’s Azul to retire A350s - reports

Azul Linhas AĆ©reas Brasileiras (AD, Sao Paulo Viracopos) plans to retire its A350-900s just a year after taking delivery of its first of the model, the aviation news site Aeroin reported citing updated slot data from Sao Paulo Viracopos Airport, the carrier’s main hub. Aviacionline and other news outlets have published similar reports.

Azul took delivery of its first A350, PR-AOY (msn 168), last September and commercially debuted it in December on its route to Orlando International. It has since taken a second of the Airbus widebody, PR-AOW (msn 124), the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. Both remain active, currently flying between the Brazilian airport and Paris Orly.

According to the updated slot data, the last A350 flight on Azul’s Orly route will be on October 2, immediately after which the jets will operate again to Orlando - but only until October 28, when the last A350 slot is scheduled at Viracopos. On both routes, the A350s will be replaced by A330-200 and A330-900 equipment after the dates mentioned.

Reports emerged last month, citing sources in and outside the company, that the high operating cost of the model - making it profitable only on routes of equal or greater distance to Sao Paulo-Paris in contrast to the A330-900 - had compelled the airline to decide to withdraw it from service. Azul is currently undergoing debt restructuring with its lessors.

The carrier has three more A350s due for delivery, all of which are currently stored at different locations - F-WTAQ (msn 187) at Abu Dhabi International, F-WXAM (msn 153) at Lourdes/Tarbes, and B-1069 (msn 98) at Beijing Capital.

Azul has opted not to confirm or deny the reports, telling Aeroin that it “is always looking at fleet opportunities and we will announce any changes at an opportune moment.” The airline did not immediately respond to a request for comment from ch-aviation.

Viva Aerobus orders more A321neos

On 5 July 2023, Airbus announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mexican ultra low-cost carrier Viva Aerobus for additional A321neos. In total, the deal is for 90 aircraft. Both companies will now continue working together in order to firm the deal.

Viva Aerobus was launched in 2006, and initially operated the Boeing B737-300. In 2013, it ordered 52 A320s to replace the Boeings, with deliveries starting in 2015. In 2018, the airline placed a follow-on order for 25 A321neos.

Today, it operates an all-Airbus fleet consisting of 22 A320s, 22 A320neos, nine A321s, and 21 A321neos.

1st Cyprus Airways Airbus A220 emerges

At the Airbus-plant at Mirabel near MontrƩal, Canada, the first Airbus A220 for Cyprus Airways has emerged. The aircraft is currently registered C-FOWY (55203) and will become 5B-DEA. A second one, which will be 5B-DEB, is also in final stages for delivery. That one is now registered as C-FPBZ (55208). Both A220-300s were originally destined for Air Senegal but not taken-up.

During this years' Paris Air Show, the airline signed a lease-agreement for the two aircraft with Air Lease Corporation. The introduction of the A220 is part of Cyprus Airways' fleet renewal strategy, which aims to grow the fleet to twelve A220s by 2028. According to Aviation Week, the airline has secured leases for A220s with delivery in 2024 and 2025, and is in negotiations with lessors for A220s for delivery in 2026. The remaining A220s would then be ordered directly with Airbus with an expected delivery in 2027 and 2028.

Today, Cyprus Airways is operating a fleet of three A320s out of its base at Larnaca. From there, it flies to Athens, Basel, Beirut, Cairo, Dubai, Heraklion, Milan-Malpensa, Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Preveza, Rhodes, Rome-Fiumicino, Santorini, Skiathos, Thessaloniki, Yerevan, and Zürich. With the grown fleet, the airline is also planning to increase its destinations as well as frequencies to current ones.

UK's Global Airlines buys three more A380s

Global Airlines has bought three more A380-800s ahead of its planned spring 2024 launch as a premium transatlantic carrier.

The start-up did not disclose the identity of the three aircraft and did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment. Global Airlines' first A380 was acquired from Doric Asset Finance. The ch-aviation fleets ownership module shows the lessor owns a further 17 of the type, including one stored and 16 still placed with Emirates (EK, Dubai International).

"As I've always said, the A380 is the best aircraft in the sky, and we will continue to look for further acquisition opportunities," Founder and Chief Executive James Asquith said.

While the airline has yet to reveal its exact business plan, it plans to focus on the UK-US transatlantic market. Asquith told ch-aviation that announcements would be forthcoming shortly, adding that the start-up has been preparing to launch for two years already. At this point, however, he did not disclose whether the airline would seek its own AOC or use a production partner.

Bolivia's BoA launches A330-200 operations

BoA - Boliviana de Aviación (OB, La Paz El Alto) has started in-house A330-200 flight operations, thus kick starting its widebody fleet rollover.

CP-3208 (msn 1452) operated a one-off rotation from Cochabamba via Santa Cruz Viru Viru to Miami International on June 17-18, followed by a first flight to Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini on June 20, 2023. Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows that it has been in daily scheduled service since June 25, flying mainly to Buenos Aires and on the domestic leg between Cochabamba and Santa Cruz Viru Viru.

The 9.9-year-old ex-Virgin Australia jet is owned by Park Aerospace Holdings (managed by Avolon) and is the first of two A330s delivered to BoA in April and May 2023. CP-3209 (msn 1561), which is on lease from Commonwealth Bank of Australia, remains parked at Santa Cruz Viru Viru. The airline was planning to add three A330-200s but the third's induction date is uncertain given a forex crunch in Bolivia.

The A330s are slated to replace four B767-300ERs of which BoA continues to operate just two, with the other pair in storage, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows. The airline is also wet-leasing one B767-200(ER) from Omni Air International (OY, Tulsa International).

Hawaiian Airlines takes first A330-300(P2F)

Hawaiian Airlines (HA, Honolulu) has taken delivery of its first A330-200(P2F) ahead of the launch of operations for Amazon.com in the fourth quarter of 2023.

N4621K (msn 1902) was ferried after conversion at Shanghai Pudong via Seoul Incheon to Honolulu on July 1-2, 2023. The aircraft is just 4.7 years old and has never operated in a passenger configuration (as it was not taken up by Hong Kong Airlines), making it the world's youngest converted freighter of any type. It was delivered already in Amazon's "PrimeAir" livery. Like all Hawaiian A330-300(P2F)s, N4621K is dry-leased from Altavair.

The Hawaiian airline expects to take two more A330s which are under P2F conversion with no prior passenger service history, as well as seven older, ex-Etihad Airways jets. The aircraft will undergo pre-induction maintenance at Honolulu airport.

Chief Executive Peter Ingram told ch-aviation recently the freighters' initial base will be Cincinnati International. All ten aircraft are to be inducted into service by the end of 2024.

The A330-300(P2F)s will be the only dedicated freighters operated by Hawaiian Airlines. The carrier's passenger fleet includes twenty-four A330-200s.

MNG Airlines adds first A321-200(P2F)

MNG Airlines (MB, Istanbul Airport) has taken delivery of its first narrowbody freighter, an A321-200(P2F), and plans to take a second of the type "in the near future".

TC-MYA (msn 3369) was converted at Singapore Seletar by ST Engineering. It was ferried via Delhi International and Erzurum to Istanbul Airport over the course of June 30-July 1, 2023, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows. It has yet to be deployed into revenue service. The 15.5-year-old jet was formerly in passenger service with Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad International) and Cathay Pacific (CX, Hong Kong International).

The aircraft joins MNG Airlines' all-widebody fleet comprising one A300-600F, three A300-600R(F)s, one A330-200F, and two A330-300(P2F).

The cargo specialist, which is in the process of listing on the New York Stock Exchange via a reverse IPO, did not respond to ch-aviation's request for comment regarding its future fleet plans.

On 2 July 2023, the first Airbus A330-300P2F for Hawaiian Airlines arrived at Honolulu (HI) after a ferry-flight from Shanghai-Pudong via Seoul-Incheon. The Airbus is registered N4621K (1902).
