ASL Aviation Holdings, SmartLynx to add A321 freighters

ASL Aviation Holdings has signed a commitment with Cargo Aircraft Management to lease three A321-200(PCF)s, with the first two due for delivery in 2022 and the third one in 2023, the lessor's parent Air Transport Services Group said in its quarterly earnings report.

"We are pleased to count ASL Aviation Holdings, a major source of cargo lift to integrated global networks, among our future lessees of Airbus cargo aircraft. ASL has ordered the first two of our A321 freighters in the second half of this year, a third in 2023," President and Chief Executive of ATSG Rich Corrado said.

The Irish holding will become the launch customer for Cargo Aircraft Management's A321-200(PCF)s, taking N982CM (msn 1972) and N983CM (msn 1887). The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that the former is already in conversion at Tampa Int'l, while the latter remains at Goodyear. The ex-Thomas Cook Airlines UK (MT, Manchester Int'l) aircraft were originally earmarked for Malaysia's Raya Airways (TH, Kuala Lumpur Subang), but Cargo Aircraft Management confirmed to Cargo Facts that it had to reallocate them due to the Malaysian carrier's specific engine requirements. The two aircraft will not only be the lessor's first converted A321s, but also the first Airbus aircraft of any variant.

The identity of the third A321 for ASL Aviation Holdings is not yet known. Cargo Aircraft Management said that it planned to deliver five A321-200(PCF)s in total in 2023. It will also purchase an additional six A321-200s in 2022 to secure feedstock for future conversions.

The commitment also includes two A330s of an unspecified variant due for delivery in 2024. Cargo Aircraft Management does not yet own any A330 freighters but has 29 conversion slots with Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) and has customers for the first 20 of these aircraft. Corrado said that deliveries to customers will begin in 2024.

"Customer interest in the remaining 9 is significant. Together with the B767s and A321s, CAM now holds rights to more than 80 passenger freighter conversions for induction through 2026. With 30 lease orders from customers covering all of our planned deliveries through next year, we already hold orders for more than 50 of those 80-plus freighters in our pipeline," Corrado said during the investor call.

ASL Aviation Holdings' carriers do not operate any A321 freighters just yet. The group's new-generation narrowbody freighter fleet comprises eighteen B737-800(BCF)s and four B737-800(BDSF)s operated by ASL Airlines IrelandASL Airlines BelgiumASL Airlines France, and K-Mile Asia with more to come. The Irish unit also operates three A330-200(P2F)s on behalf of DHL Express.

Neither ASL Aviation Holdings nor ATSG responded to ch-aviation's question about the identity of the third A321 and the two A330s.

Meanwhile, another future ATSG A330-300(P2F) customer SmartLynx Airlines (6Y, Riga), which already operates one A321-200(PCF) and one A321-200(P2F) through SmartLynx Airlines Malta, has announced a partnership with APOC Aviation Europe to acquire and convert a further four A321-200s. OH-LZA (msn 941), OH-LZB (msn 961), OH-LZC (msn 1185), and OH-LZD (msn 1241) were sold by Finnair (AY, Helsinki Vantaa) and will join SmartLynx's fleet as freighters in early 2023. By mid-2023, the Latvian group hopes to operate fifteen A321-200 converted freighters.

Air Albania to add two more A320s

Air Albania (ZB, Tirana) has announced it will dry-lease two A320-200s directly from GA Telesis, its first aircraft not sourced via parent company Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul New).

The Albanian flag carrier plans to finalise the contract shortly ahead of the 180-seater jets' induction later this summer season. It did not, however, provide a more specific timeline and did not disclose the identity of the A320s.

The lessor owns ten A320-200s, five of which are placed with United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare), one with dormant Onur Air (8Q, Istanbul New), and four more are in storage.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows that Air Albania currently operates one A319-100 and one A320-200, both sourced from Turkish Airlines. The A319, ZA-BEL (msn 3142), is sub-leased from Park Aerospace Holdings/Avolon, while the A320 is owned by the Turkish carrier. Air Albania also wet-leases an ACJ319-100 from Turkish Airlines General Aviation for government operations.

The two new A320s will support Air Albania's planned network growth. In early April, the carrier launched scheduled flights from the newly opened Kukës airport in the north of the country to Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg, CH and Zurich. In July, it will launch services from Tirana to Antalya and Burgas.

Airbus Updates No.3861

Qantas confirms A350-1000, A321XLR, A220 orders

Qantas Group has confirmed tentative orders with Airbus for twelve ultra-long-range-capable A350-1000s, twenty A321-200NX(XLR)s, and twenty A220-300s, with a further 94 options for narrowbody aircraft.

Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith) plans to use the A350s for non-stop flights from Sydney Kingsford Smith and Melbourne Tullamarine to Europe and the US East Coast as part of its Project Sunrise. The first aircraft are expected to deliver in 2025, in time for the late 2025 launch of flights from the two Australian gateways to London and New York. The remainder will deliver through 2028.

"The A350 and Project Sunrise will make almost any city in the world just one flight away from Australia. It’s the last frontier and the final fix for the tyranny of distance that has traditionally challenged travel to Australia. The first Project Sunrise flights will be from New York and London, but the aircraft will also be able to operate non-stop flights to Australia from destinations such as Paris and Frankfurt," Chief Executive Alan Joyce said.

The carrier will outfit the aircraft with a premium-heavy cabin configuration with six first-class suites (featuring a separate bed and a seat), 52 business class seats, 40 premium economy, and 140 economy. The aircraft will also be equipped with a "wellbeing zone" for stretching and hydration given the length of the ultra-long-haul flights.

Qantas initially hoped to order the A350s in 2020 but deferred the project due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The airline also confirmed its order for A321-200NX(XLR)s and A220s to replace its mainline fleet of B717-200s and B737-800s. The A220s will start delivering in late 2023 and the A321neo a year later. Including the options, deliveries could continue through 2034. Qantas currently operates seventy-five B737-800s and wet-leases twenty B717-200s from subsidiary Cobham Aviation Services Australia - Airline Services (QJE, Adelaide).

The new A220/A321neo is on top of an existing commitment for 109 A320neo Family aircraft for Jetstar Airways (JQ, Melbourne Tullamarine). The LCC subsidiary is on track to take its first A321-200NX(LR) in July 2022. The Group has also converted twenty A320-200N orders into A321-200NX(XLR)s, with deliveries starting in the second half of 2024. Following the adjustment, Jetstar Airways has orders for twenty-five A320-200Ns, one A321-200NX, twenty-six A321-200NX(LR)s, and fifty-six -200NX(XLR)s, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows

Air Canada bumps A321neo(XLR) order

Air Canada (AC, Montréal Trudeau) has disclosed in its quarterly financial report that it has increased its A321-200NX(XLR) order book by four units to a total of 30.

"We have also advanced our Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals in the quarter by announcing an order for 26 fuel-efficient Airbus A321XLR aircraft, which we have now increased to 30 aircraft. As well, we have recently entered into a long-term agreement with International Aero Engines for the selection of the PW1100G-JM engines, spare engines and related maintenance services for these new aircraft," President and Chief Executive Michael Rousseau said.

The incremental order was signed shortly after the initial commitment - Air Canada ordered the initial batch of twenty-six A321-200NX(XLR)s in late March 2022 comprising six directly from Airbus, fifteen from Air Lease Corporation, and five from AerCap. The incremental four will come directly from the manufacturer. Air Canada revealed it holds a further 15 purchase rights for the type, an increase of one.

Deliveries are expected to begin in the first half of 2024, with the final aircraft to arrive in 2027.

"Our announcement of the acquisition of thirty Airbus A321XLRs is a good example of Rise Higher [strategy] in action, with all four pillars working in a coordinated fashion. The fuel efficiency of these aircraft will reduce operating costs. Their long range opens new market opportunities internationally," Rousseau added during the investor call.

Airbus Updates No.3859

Big Airbus Order As Qantas Greenlights Project Sunrise

After multiple diversions and delays, Qantas' ambitious Project Sunrise got the official green light on Monday morning (Sydney time). Qantas CEO Alan Joyce made the announcement in Sydney alongside a prototype Project Sunrise plane, an A350-1000 featuring Qantas livery specially flown in from Toulouse for the occasion.

From 2025, a fleet of 12 Airbus A350-1000s will fly nonstop from Australia's east coast to London and New York. In addition, Qantas confirmed an order for 40 new Airbus A321XLRs and A220s to fly domestic and short to medium-haul international routes, replacing existing aircraft, with the first due to land in 2023. Qantas has also secured options for a further 94 narrowbody Airbus jets spread over the next decade.

We have come through the other side of the pandemic a structurally different company. Our domestic market share is higher, and the demand for direct international flights is even stronger than it was before COVID. The business case for Project Sunrise has an internal rate of return in the mid-teens," said Mr Joyce in Sydney on Monday.

“The Board’s decision to approve what is the largest aircraft order in Australian aviation is a clear vote of confidence in the future of the Qantas Group. Our strategy for these aircraft will see us generate significant benefits for those who make it possible – our people, our customers, and our shareholders."

Pandemic throws Project Sunrise into disarray

The bold plan to link Australia's east coast cities to destinations on the other side of the world in a single hop was set to launch just before the pandemic derailed plans. Qantas had picked modified A350-1000s as its preferred aircraft and was just weeks away from confirming the aircraft order when COVID-19 turned everything upside down.

Qantas never gave up on Project Sunrise. Every six months or so throughout the pandemic, CEO Alan Joyce would bob up to remind everyone that nonstop flights to places like New York, Capetown, and London were still on the agenda. Indeed, Mr Joyce argued as the airline industry recovered from the pandemic, passengers would prefer to bypass transit ports, making the Project Sunrise business case even more compelling. But in the meantime, it was all a question of timing.

Keen plane spotters knew an aviation news story was brewing when an A350-1000 (registration F-WMIL), partly decked out in Qantas colors, took off from Toulouse (TLS) on April 30 and flew down to Perth (PER), landing there on Sunday evening. In the early hours of Monday morning, the jet departed Perth for the trip across to Sydney, where it landed around 60 minutes ahead of the big announcement. Interestingly, the jet didn't make the TLS - SYD flight in one hop, per Project Sunrise's top-selling point.

Project Sunrise locked in

In a hangar at Sydney Airport on Monday morning, Mr Joyce confirmed he'd signed on the dotted line with Airbus to take the 12 Project Sunrise Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. Passengers embarking on the epic trips are in for a treat, with six fully enclosed first class suites featuring a separate bed and seats, lie-flat business class seats with sliding doors, and upgraded premium economy and economy class seats.

Although the A350-1000 is a sizable plane, Qantas' A350s will only carry 238 passengers, with more than 40% of the cabin dedicated to premium seating. This compares to more than 300 seats on competitor airlines. Each Project Sunrise aircraft will include a "wellness zone" where passengers can stretch their legs and get the blood flowing again.

"The A350 and Project Sunrise will make any city just one flight away from Australia. It’s the last frontier and the final fix for the tyranny of distance. As you’d expect, the cabin is being specially designed for maximum comfort in all classes for long-haul flying," said the Qantas CE0.

An Airbus focus for the future Qantas narrowbody fleets

While Qantas' order for the Airbus narrowbodies might not capture the headlines like the Project Sunrise jets, the new Airbus narrowbody order will have a greater impact on the airline's day-to-day operations. On Monday morning, Mr Joyce also confirmed firm orders for 20 Airbus A321XLR and 20 Airbus A220-300 aircraft to start replacing Qantas’ narrowbody Boeing 737 and 717 fleet.

The first A220s are due to land in late 2023 and the first A321XLRs are slated to start landing in late 2024. The 94 options are spread across A320 and A220 families, with significant delivery timing and aircraft type flexibility.

"The A320s and A220s will become the backbone of our domestic fleet for the next 20 years, helping to keep this country moving. Their range and economics will make new direct routes possible, including serving regional cities better," said Mr Joyce.

A big upgrade for future Qantas passengers

The Qantas’ A321XLR will be five meters longer than the outgoing 737s. The new jets will seat 200 people (20 in business class and 180 in economy class) – a 15% increase with no reduction in space between seats. The A321XLR can fly approximately 3,000 kilometers further than the 737-800s and opens up a wider range of direct domestic and short-haul international routes.

The incoming A220-300s are larger overall than the outgoing 717-200s and will be configured to seat 137 people (10 in business class and 127 in economy class) – a 25% increase with no reduction in space between seats. It has almost twice the range at over 6,000 kilometers, meaning it can fly between any city in Australia.

Most regular Qantas flyers will agree these new planes represent a significant upgrade. The Airbus order also locks in the Qantas drift away from Boeing in favor of the Toulouse plane builder. Airbus fans will appreciate that drift, Boeing fans maybe less so. But these incoming jets do represent a significant step-up in Qantas' future capabilities and combined with the Project Sunrise flights, sees Qantas chart its course over the medium-term future.

Virgin Atlantic Takes Delivery Of Its 9th Airbus A350-1000

UK airline Virgin Atlantic took delivery of its 9th Airbus A350-1000 this past week. The delivery took place on April 27th, with the airline now having an all-widebody fleet of 37 aircraft. The name of this aircraft, ‘Lady Emmeline’, was announced on March 8th to celebrate International Women's Day.

Delivery details

Taking place on Wednesday, April 27th, Airbus delivered the A350-1000 registered G-VLIB to Virgin Atlantic. Data from FlightRadar24.com shows that the aircraft with MSN 507 departed Toulouse at 12:36 local time and made the 93-minute flight to London Heathrow, touching down at 13:05 local.

Prior to the aircraft’s delivery, it had accumulated a total of nine test flight hours (eight hours and 54 minutes to be precise) across four flights. The aircraft was first spotted in Toulouse without its engines back on December 16th, 2021.

G-VLIB’s special name and story

Having a strong history of naming its aircraft with feminine names and nicknames such as "Tinker Belle," "Cosmic Girl," and "Beauty Queen," Virgin Atlantic continues this tradition with a slight twist.

Indeed, while the story of this new A350-1000 has just begun, the person it’s been named after has already made it into the history books. The aircraft has been given the nickname Lady Emmeline, which Virgin Atlantic describes as an "homage to the founder of the Suffragette movement and women’s rights activist, Emmeline Pankhurst."

The airline adds that Pankhurst was the leader of the Women’s Social and Political Union, and was instrumental in securing the right to vote for women in the UK at the turn of the last century.

"In tribute to its feminist namesake, all charitable donations received onboard Lady Emmeline will be distributed to a selection of women’s charities when the plane starts flights next year." -Virgin Atlantic

As the airline explains in a recent blog, the International Women's Day announcement was meant to celebrate women in aviation. Estelle Hollingsworth, chief people officer at Virgin Atlantic went on to say that it was focused on "being a fair, diverse, and inclusive employer that attracts the best talent, regardless of gender.”

Five more A350 deliveries remain for Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic initially placed its order for 12 A350-1000s back in 2016. At the time of the announcement, Craig Kreeger, CEO Virgin Atlantic said:

"The size of this order demonstrates our absolute focus on investing in the future for our customers and our people, and confirms the strength of our business. The A350-1000 plays a pivotal role in our fleet programme, helping to create one of the youngest, cleanest, greenest fleets in the sky."

The airline took delivery of its first back in August 2019, taking an additional three during the remainder of 2019 and another three over the course of 2020. Just one was delivered to Virgin Atlantic in 2021.

In mid-December of 2021, it was announced that the carrier would be adding two additional A350-1000s to its fleet via a lease agreement with Air Lease Corporation (ALC). This brings the airline's total A350 commitment to 14 aircraft.

Delta Air Lines Takes Delivery Of 15th Airbus A330-900

Major US carrier Delta Air Lines took delivery of another brand new A330-900 from Airbus at the end of the week. The April 29th delivery marks the 15th A330neo to join the Delta fleet from a total order of 35. Let's look at the delivery and what else Delta is expecting in the months to come.

Delivery details

On April 29th, Delta's 15th Airbus A330-900 departed France for Atlanta. The aircraft, registered N418DX, took off from Airbus' assembly facilities in Toulouse at 12:24 local time and made the nine-hour flight to Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International. The jet touched down at 15:33 local time.

The delivery was conducted after the aircraft had completed a total of six hours and 55 minutes of test flying across just four test flights. The plane's very first test flight took place on April 1st, with subsequent tests occurring on April 13th, 15th, and 22nd.

All of Delta's A330-900s have just one type of seating configuration. Comprised of four classes, the breakdown is as follows:

  • 29 Delta One Suites
  • 28 seats in Delta Premium Select (premium economy)
  • 56 Comfort Plus seats*
  • 168 seats in Delta's "Main Cabin" (standard economy)

Almost halfway there...

As Delta's 15th A330-900, the recent delivery from Airbus means that the airline has 20 more of the type yet to be delivered.

This order originally goes back to November 20th, 2014, when Delta placed a massive order for 50 Airbus widebody aircraft. This was divided equally, with 25 A350-900s and 25 A330-900s. The order itself marked a significant shift for Delta, which had previously been a majority-Boeing airline. For those unaware, Delta's older A330-200s and -300s come from its merger with Northwest Airlines, which took place in 2008.

Almost exactly four years later, Delta boosted its commitment to the A330-900, adding another 10 of the type to the order book for a total of 35. Commenting on this adjustment, Gil West, Delta’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer said at the time:

“Expanding our A330 order book not only ensures that Delta’s near-to-medium-term widebody needs are taken care of, but also drives our strategic, measured international growth.”

Other new types incoming to Delta

It's not just A330-900s that continue to be delivered to the US carrier. Indeed, Delta is expecting another 10 A350-900s to join the fleet over the course of this year as well as from 2023 through 2025. On the narrowbody side, Delta is expecting over 150 Airbus A321neos as well as about 40 more A220-300s.

All of these upcoming deliveries show Delta's trust in Airbus' products - having a much higher proportion of the European planemaker's aircraft in its fleet than its US rivals. American had adopted an order for A350s due to its merger with US Airways, but this was eventually canceled. Meanwhile, United Airlines still has an outstanding order for A350s, which has been adjusted and deferred for multiple years.
