UK's Titan Airways to add first A330 freighter

Titan Airways (ZT, London Stansted) is poised to add its first widebody freighter, an A330-300(P2F), for CMI operations for an undisclosed customer, Cargo Facts has reported.

EI-GTT (msn 713), a 15.6-year-old aircraft owned by Stratos, was ferried after conversion by Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) from Dresden to Châteauroux on July 11, 2021, still in the livery of the former operator AirAsia X. Once repainted and re-registered in the UK, it will become G-EODS.

Titan Airways declined to comment concerning the aircraft's future operations, although DHL Express explicitly said it would not be operated on its behalf. The airline has yet to add the type to its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) as of July 13.

The airline does not currently operate any widebody aircraft in either passenger or freighter configuration. Its fleet comprises two A320-200s, four A321-200s, two A321-200(P2F)s, two A321-200NX(LR)s, two B737-400(SF)s, and two B757-200s. Its only ever widebody, a B767-300(ER), was retired in May 2020, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows.

Malaysia Airlines issues RFP for sale of six A380-800s

Malaysia Airlines (MH, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) soliciting bids for the sale of six A380-800s with a deadline for offers to be sent by August 13, 2021.

The carrier said it would only release the detailed documentation to pre-approved bidders who sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) by August 12. It tentatively plans to conclude the sale by November, although it also retained the right to not choose any of the bids.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, the six Airbus double-deckers are 9.2 years old on average and range from 8.7 to 9.8 years of age individually. As of February 28, 2021, they have accumulated from 23,819 to 28,386 flight hours each, and from 2,277 to 2,618 flight cycles each. The aircraft are equipped with 412 seats in economy class (except for a single unit, 9M-MNA (msn 78), with 420), 66 in business class, and eight in first class.

The Malaysian carrier has long struggled with finding a good use for its A380s. In 2017, it resolved to transfer the six aircraft to a new unit, Amal by Malaysia Airlines, dedicated to Hajj and Umrah flights from Malaysia to Madinah and Jeddah. It initially planned to reconfigure the aircraft into high-density single-class layouts. However, it later scrapped these plans and for a while continued to operate the A380-800s on the most in-demand scheduled routes to Seoul Incheon and Tokyo Narita, even as it started taking deliveries of the replacement type, the A350-900s. Eventually, however, the aircraft were moved to serve exclusively the Saudi Arabian routes.

All of them were grounded in February and March 2020, when the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic halted all pilgrimages to the Muslim holy sites. Since then, the aircraft have only been reactivated for sporadic test flights around Kuala Lumpur. In May 2021, Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it would not seek to return the A380s to service and would instead try to sell them.

 Air France Takes Its 11th Airbus A350 – How Many More Will It Take?

French national flag carrier Air France has just received its 11th Airbus A350 as it continues to overhaul its long-haul fleet of planes. Continuing the tradition of naming its aircraft after French cities, Air France has named its latest arrival “Cannes” after the French Riviera resort town famed for its international film festival, upmarket boutiques, and palatial hotels. Air France selected Cannes for the aircraft after being associated with the film festival for the past 41 years.

In a statement published on July 6, 2021, Air France said that its 11th Airbus A350-900 has rolled off the production line in Toulouse and will soon make the journey north to its new home at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). After being given the registration number F-HTYJ, the aircraft will operate on Air France’s premium long-haul routes.

How the delivery works

Before Air France takes delivery of a new plane from the Airbus factory in Toulouse, specialists from Air France visit Toulouse to carry out a thorough check. They make sure that the aircraft conforms to all contractual specifications while spending five days at the Airbus facility. 

• Day One: A ground check of all external surfaces is carried out, and a static aircraft system, cabin, cockpit, and engine check
• Day Two: The specialists carry out a flight check to ensure all the aircraft systems are behaving how they are supposed to
• Day Three: A physical rework or provision for all technical and quality snags
• Day Four: On day four, the Air France crew completes the technical acceptance attesting to the aircraft conforming to technical specifications and issuing the Airworthiness Certificate
• Day Five: On day five, the deeds for the aircraft are transferred from Airbus to Air France, and the plane is then prepared for delivery to its home base

The A350 is a new definition of comfort

Air France has configured all its Airbus A350 aircraft to carry 324 passengers in a three-cabin layout. Business class has 34 seats, premium economy has 24 seats, with economy class making up the remaining 266 seats. Onboard the Airbus A350 Air France, passengers enjoy the following:

• A spacious and quiet cabin
• Windows that are 30% larger
• An optimized air pressure system that provides a more comfortable cabin atmosphere with regularly renewed cabin air
• Lighting that adapts to the different flight phases
• In business class, the seat turns into a real two-meter-long lie-flat bed, guaranteeing a  restful sleep
• In premium economy, the brand new “Recliner” seat is 48cm wide and reclines to 124°
• In economy class, the seat has been redesigned for even more comfort, with a reinforced ergonomic seat cushion, a 118° seat recline, as well as a 79-cm seat pitch.
• Each cabin features large individual High Definition touch screens.

60 new A220-300s

In a move designed to modernize its entire long-haul fleet, between now and 2024, Air France will take delivery of 38 new A350 aircraft from Airbus. And it is not just the long-haul fleet that is getting an upgrade. Starting this September, Air France will begin to overhaul its short-haul fleet with the arrival of the first of 60 new Airbus A220-300 planes.

Aer Lingus (UK) adds first A330-300

Aer Lingus (United Kingdom) (Belfast City) added its first A330-300 transferred from parent company Aer Lingus (EI, Dublin Int'l) on July 5, 2021.

G-EILA (msn 1106), previously EI-ELA on the Irish register, has remained parked at Dublin Int'l airport since February 22, 2021. The aircraft is owned by AerCap and has been operated by the Irish carrier since initial delivery from Airbus in 2010. It seats up to 317 passengers, including 30 in business class and 287 in economy.

The British subsidiary of Aer Lingus is set to add another A330-300, as well as one A321-200NX(LR). It intends to begin revenue operations out of Manchester Int'l on July 29, 2021, deploying the A321 to New York JFK and the A330 to Orlando Int'l. Flights will operate under the "EI" code of Aer Lingus. The UK carrier will remain a technical capacity provider established to comply with the US-UK bilateral air services agreement.

Aer Lingus (UK) has yet to receive an air operator's certificate (AOC) or operator's licence (OL) from the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
