AirAsia X (D7, Kuala Lumpur Int'l) has further adjusted its Airbus backlog ordering twelve A330-900s alongside thirty A321neo(XLR)s.

The AirAsia Group subsidiary said in a stock market disclosure that deliveries of its now 78-strong A330neo order backlog will begin in 2020 while the XLRs will start to arrive from 2023 onwards.

"The additional Aircraft are planned as part of the Company’s future fleet and hub expansion, as well as to replace aircraft in the existing fleet, given that a number of the Company's existing aircraft will reach twelve (12) years of age beginning 2020," it said. "These Aircraft will also replace leased aircraft which will be returned to the respective lessors within the next nine (9) years."

The longhaul LCC specialist said deliveries will be funded mainly by sale and leaseback arrangements and/or debt financing depending on market conditions.

AirAsia X operates twenty-four A330-300s at present while sister carrier Indonesia AirAsia X (XT, Denpasar) operates two and Thai AirAsia X (XJ, Bangkok Don Mueang) operates ten A330-300s and one A330-900.

Volaris El Salvador adds first aircraft, an A320-200

Volaris El Salvador (VOS, San Salvador Int'l) has taken delivery of its first aircraft, an A320-200 N523VL (msn 6014), formerly in service with parent carrier Volaris (Y4, Toluca).

According to Flightradar24 ADS-b data, the 5.51-year-old aircraft was ferried to San Salvador Int'l on Tuesday, August 20.

Despite having secured its Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) from the El Salvadoran civil aviation authority (Autoridad de Aviación Civil - AAC) in June this year, Volaris El Salvador has yet to begin commercial flight operations.

However, at the time, the AAC said the start-up's inaugural route would be a 2x daily San Salvador Int'l-Guatemala City return service.

Once active, it will be Volaris's second foreign AOC after its already active Volaris Costa Rica (Q6, San José Juan Santamaría) subsidiary.

South African court rules Tanzanian A220 should be released

A Gauteng High Court in South Africa has ordered the release of a Tanzanian government-owned A220-300 following its seizure at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo on Friday, August 23.

A government spokesman said following a hearing on Wednesday, September 4, that the plaintiff Hermanus Steyn had been ordered to pay costs as well. For its part, Air Tanzania was forced to suspend its Dar es Salaam-Johannesburg O.R. Tambo route for the duration of proceedings.

Steyn secured a court order in August allowing him to seize 5H-TCH (msn 55047), which, while operated by Air Tanzania (TC, Dar es Salaam), is owned by TGF - Tanzania Government Flight, over a dispute over compensation from the Tanzanian government for property it had seized from him over 30 years ago.

According to Business Day newspaper, during a nationalisation drive in 1982, Tanzania expropriated a large privately-owned bean-and-seed farm from Steyn, a Namibia-born farmer, seizing everything including equipment, 250 cars, and 12 small planes.

Steyn was subsequently awarded USD36 million in compensation in the 1990s but was only paid USD20 million. The outstanding USD16 million was never paid but continued to accrue interest leaving the total amount due at USD33 million.

The report said Steyn, now an 86-year-old grandfather, has been fighting for years to recover the outstanding amount.

According to The Citizen newspaper, during an August 30 hearing, the Tanzanians successfully argued that the South African court did not have the jurisdiction to hear the case.

"The order can only be executed on the Tanzania soil as confirmed by Judge B.K Phillip of the Tanzania Commercial Courts, because there is already a court order in Tanzania," Victor Nkhwashu, a lawyer for the Tanzanians, said.

On the other hand, Steyn's lawyer, Roger Wakefield, had insisted that a prima facie case exists and that a trial should be used to determine the merits of the case and prospects of success.
