Vietnam's Bamboo Airways to add maiden A330, eyes A380 to US

Bamboo Airways (QH, Hanoi) is in the process of adding its maiden widebody aircraft, an ex-Vietnam Airlines A330-200. Going forward, the carrier is also eyeing leasing an A380-800 for its touted flights to the United States.

Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows A330-200 msn 943 was ferried from storage at Lourdes/Tarbes to Manchester Int'l on June 21. It was subsequently repainted into Bamboo Airways' livery and departed back to Lourdes on July 1. The 11-year-old aircraft is owned by FPG Amentum and currently registered as 2-RLAX ahead of its transfer to the Vietnamese register.

Bamboo Airways is planning to acquire up to thirty B787-9s from Boeing for its planned long-haul expansion. Deliveries are, however, only scheduled to start during the third quarter of 2020.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, the carrier currently operates an all-narrowbody fleet including one A319-100, two A320-200s, and three A321-200neo. It is also in the process of adding another two A320s and one A321neo, and wet-leases a further three A320s.

Meanwhile, Bamboo Airways is also planning to add more second-hand widebody aircraft, including a leased A380-800. Chairman and CEO of parent company FLC Trinh Van Quyet told the Financial Times that the carrier would like to use the A380 on new direct services to the United States where it is looking at serving either San Francisco, CA or Los Angeles Int'l from either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

"We will start in the first quarter of 2020 if we get permission by the end of this year," he said.

Vietnam secured FAA Category 1 status earlier this year, paving the way for direct flights. Thus far, only Vietnam Airlines has applied for, and been granted, exemption authority by the US Department of Transportation (DOT). It has, however, said that while it was considering direct services to the US, they would probably be loss-making and would require subsidies from the Vietnamese government.

jetBlue takes delivery of first A321neo

jetBlue Airways (B6, New York JFK) has taken delivery of its first of eighty-five A321neo Family jets on order from Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac). According to Skyliner Aviation, A321-200neo N2002J (msn 8823) was ferried from Hamburg Finkenwerder to Lake City via New York JFK on June 29.

Inclusive of its recent order for the XLR placed during the 2019 Paris Air Show, jetBlue's A321neo Family order book stands at 85 aircraft of which sixty-nine are standard variants, thirteen are LRs, and thirteen are XLRs.

It expects to take delivery of a minimum of six standard A321neo in 2019 all of which will supplement its existing fleet of 130 A320ceo and sixty-three A321ceo.

Hungary's Wizz Air eyes Dubai, India with A321neo(XLR)

Wizz Air (W6, Budapest) is planning to focus on eastbound expansion with its A321-200neo(XLR)s and is eyeing direct services from London to Dubai and from Central Europe to India, CEO József Váradi told Bloomberg.

"We’ll connect the dots of our existing network but we’ll be looking at new opportunities, too. The XLR will be delivered in four years so we have plenty of time to work it out," he said.

According to the ch-aviation schedules module, Wizz Air currently flies to Dubai World Central from its Central European bases at Bucharest Otopeni and Budapest year-round, and from Katowice, Sofia, and Cluj-Napoca in winter only. In Asia, the carrier also serves Tel Aviv Ben Gurion, Eilat Ramon, and Nur-Sultan.

Wizz Air and its subsidiary Wizz Air UK (W9, London Luton) maintain bases at London Luton but cannot currently operate to Dubai due to range limitations of the current-generation Airbus narrowbodies.

Váradi underlined that the LCC had no plans to enter the transatlantic market, even with the new aircraft.

Wizz Air is set to receive twenty A321neo(XLR)s as a part of an order for fifty units (including eighteen conversions of A320-200neo orders) placed by its largest shareholder Indigo Partners during the 2019 Paris Air Show. Váradi clarified that once formalised, contracts will be signed directly between the airline and the manufacturer.

Currently, the Hungarian LCC operates sixty-eight A320-200s, thirty-three A321-200s, and three A321neo. It has a further seventy-two A320neo (possibly including some units due to be converted into A321neo(XLR)s), three A321-200s, and 181 A321neo on firm order from Airbus.

Royalair philippines adds first A319

royalair philippines (RW, Clark) has added a maiden A319-100 in the form of an ex-Lanmei Airlines (LQ, Phnom Penh) unit, msn 2784, formerly XU-983.

The 13-year-old unit is leased from Carlyle Aviation Partners and has been re-registered as RP-C9368. It operated a demo flight in royalair's livery from Clark to Cebu and Davao prior to returning to Clark on June 28, 2019, Skyliner Aviation has reported. Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows that the Airbus unit was retired by the Cambodian carrier on May 30, 2019.

royalair philippines currently operates three active ARJ-100s on a predominantly domestic network out of Cebu and Clark. The airline also operates scheduled flights to Macau Int'l and Shantou in mainland China.

The Filipino carrier has yet to schedule any A319 flights.

Following the transfer of the A319, Lanmei Airlines continues to operate a further two units of the type, as well as two A320-200s and two A321-200s.
