MIAMI — Azul, the Brazilian low-cost, award-winning airline, announced today a heavy expansion to the United States with two new flights from Belo Horizonte (CNF) to Orlando (MCO), and from Belem (BEL) to Fort Lauderdale (FLL).

The new flights will be launched in December 2017, during the peak of the Brazilian high season.

“I am very pleased to announce new international service from Brazil to the US,” said the airline’s Chairman, David Neeleman. “Not only have our customers been asking for these flights, but this also strengthens our strategic positioning in these important cities,” he added.

In addition to these new nonstop flights, Azul will be increasing its number of flights to FLL and MCO from the airline’s Viracopos (VCP) main hub up to five flights a day.

With these new routes, Azul consolidates itself as the largest airline in Brazil by number of cities served, offering over 739 daily flights, of which over 200 are non-stop, to over 100 destinations. Its fleet counts with 123 aircraft, including 60 Embraer 195s, 10 Embraer 190s, 40 ATR 72-600s, 8 Airbus A320neos, and 6 wide-body Airbus A330-200s.

Azul’s presence in the United States continues to grow with increased capacity on the new CNF-MCO route. Operated with the airline’s Airbus A330-200, the airline will offer its passengers one of the best cabins in the industry, fitted with the new Azul Xtra fledged Business Class cabin, Economy Xtra (Premium Economy), and standard Economy.

Similarly, the airline will launch its newest Airbus A320neo on the BEL-FLL route. The new neos are fitted with 174 seats in an all-economy layout, of which 36 are labeled “Espaço Azul”, offering more legroom for paying customers.

Back in January 2016, Azul signed a purchase agreement for more than 35 Airbus A320neos, with an additional 28 to be leased. In October, the first aircraft (PR-YRA), powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines, was delivered to the airline via GE Capital Aviation Services Limited (GECAS).

Even though the A320neos are set replace E195s on routes where the latter are not doing well, and where higher passenger density is needed, Azul determined that the aircraft was a perfect fit for routes of more than 2,500km [1,350 miles]. The BEL-FLL route is 2,800nm apart.

Antonoaldo Neves, the airline’s CEO, told Airways, “The combination of both Airbus and Embraer will optimise Azul’s offerings. The new Airbus will further drive CASM [cost per available seat mile] down.”

According to Airbus, 52 A320neos and 10 A321neos will be joining Azul’s fleet.

ICBC identified as customer for 20 A320neo-family jets

Chinese lessor ICBC has been identified as the customer behind an order for 20 Airbus A320neo-family jets placed at the end of 2014.

The aircraft were originally recorded as A320neos but Airbus's latest backlog data, covering the first seven months of this year, lists them as 18 A320neos and two A321neos.

Airbus had attributed the order, placed in December 2014, to an undisclosed customer.

ICBC's agreement has undergone a minor rejig – including cancellation of two aircraft – and the changes take to 36 the number of A320neos ordered by the company, plus two A321neos.

The lessor had signalled, during the Paris air show, that it had additional A320neos on order beyond the 20 formally listed by Airbus at the time.

ICBC had ordered the 20 A320neos in 2012, as part of a deal for 50 Airbus single-aisle jets.

But it signed an agreement at the show covering CFM International Leap-1A engines for 40 A320neos.

ICBC is also still awaiting delivery of two A320s from a total of 48 ordered by the lessor.

MIAMI — The first Airbus A350 for Delta Air Lines will conduct its delivery flight from Toulouse, France to Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday. The aircraft, N501DN, will take off from Toulouse around 9:00 p.m. and land in Atlanta around 11:30 p.m. in the late evening.

This morning, N501DN was captured by Jujug Spotting in Toulouse wearing its final registration as it made its way to the Airbus Delivery Center.

Unlike the delivery flight for the first 242T A330-300, Delta will not be flying specially selected employees (Part of Delta’s Chairman’s Club) on the first A350 delivery flight. Instead, these employees will fly on the delivery flight for the second A350 in a few weeks.

There are currently five additional Delta A350s undergoing various stages of assembly. At this time, the second A350 for Delta is at the Airbus Delivery Center in Toulouse awaiting customer flights. That aircraft, N502DN, will likely make its delivery flight in early September.

The third Delta A350 is having its cabin installed or as Airbus calls it, ‘Station 20.’ The fourth Delta A350 is at ‘Station 18’ undergoing outdoor ground tests ahead of cabin fit. Finally, the fifth and sixth Delta A350s are undergoing final assembly.

The Delta A350-900 will be the first aircraft fitted with the new Delta One Suite and premium economy cabin. The aircraft will have 32 Delta One Suites, 48 Delta Premium Select seats, and 226 economy seats. In total, the A350 will seat 306 passengers.

The first Delta A350 commercial flight will be on October 30th from Detroit to Tokyo-Narita. The A350 is set to replace the Boeing 747-400 as Delta’s flagship aircraft. The first crew base for the A350 will be Detroit.

Delta says the A350 will “continue Delta’s optimization of its Pacific network, operating primarily on long-range routes between the U.S. and Asia.” The aircraft is expected to generate a 20% improvement in operating costs compared to the 747-400.

After Tokyo-Narita, the A350 will fly from Detroit to Seoul beginning November 16th and Beijing beginning January 17th.

TAP Debuts A330 Aircraft with “Stopover” Design Livery

NEW YORK –TAP Air Portugal unveiled one of its A330-300 aircraft, CS-TOW, with a new special themed livery to commemorate the first anniversary of the “Portugal Stopover” program. The paint scheme highlights many popular icons of a visit to Portugal. This aircraft will begin service between Portugal and North America in the weeks to come.

TAP unveiled its stopover offer in July 2016, to encourage TAP’s long-haul customers transiting through Lisbon or Porto to stay for up to three days for no additional airfare. The longer 5-day stopover option is available for visits starting in September of 2017.

Almost 70,000 TAP Air Portugal travelers have enjoyed visits to Lisbon and Porto while en route to destinations in Portugal and throughout Europe and Africa since the airline launched the program one year ago.  Now the popular Portugal Stopover program is expanding to include longer visits, of up to five days, for no additional airfare.

Also from September, stopover passengers will be able to create a multi-destination journey, making it will be possible to travel from one destination and return from another.  For example, people may choose to fly to Barcelona then return from Seville but they will still qualify for a stopover in Lisbon or Porto on the outbound or return travel. Stopover visits are now also available on one-way travel to Europe or Africa. Previously round-trip travel was necessary to qualify for the program.

In February, TAP added several Portugal areas as destinations which also qualify for the stopover, including the Algarve, Madeira and the Azores.  Travelers can now visit Lisbon or Porto for up to five days en route to Faro, Ponta Delgada, Terceira, Funchal and Porto Santo for no extra airfare.

In June, TAP unveiled a special retro paint scheme on another A330. Both A330s in the new special paint schemes are secondhand frames that formerly flew for Singapore Airlines.
