THE MONTH IN REVIEW: DECEMBER 2015

Airbus logged 60 aircraft orders in December from across its commercial product lines, bringing the year’s net orders to 1,036; while the 79 jetliners provided to customers during the month raised the 2015 total to a new annual record of 635 deliveries.  

Based on the orders and deliveries activity, Airbus achieved a year-end industry record backlog of 6,787 aircraft as of 31 December – representing a combined value of $996.3 billion at list prices, and providing a volume equivalent to 10 years of production at current rates.

The A320 single-aisle family paced December’s new business activity, with 36 for the New Engine Option (NEO) versions of Airbus’ A319, A320 and A321; along with three for the A320ceo (Current Engine Option) configuration.

This included the firming-up of a commitment by Turkish Airlines for 20 additional A321neo aircraft, adding to the 72 A321neo jetliners already on order by Turkey’s flagship airline.  Ordering five A320neo aircraft each in December were British Airways, Iberia, and Vueling; while an unnamed private operator acquired an ACJ319neo corporate jet. 

Completing the month’s single-aisle transactions were the two A320ceo aircraft for China Aircraft Leasing Group Holdings Limited (CALC), and one A320ceo booked by Air New Zealand.

Among December’s widebody orders were three for the 21^st century flagship A380 from an unidentified customer, along with bookings from an unidentified customer for two A350-900 versions of the new A350 XWB.

Airbus’ popular A330 Family converted an order from AirAsia X for 11 A330-900 aircraft in the A330’s New Engine Option series, while South Africa Airways booked a conversion to five A330-300s in the Current Engine Option configuration.

Deliveries in December were composed of 55 A320 Family aircraft, 17 A330s, four A350s (including the initial A350-900 for TAM Airlines, which becomes the first A350 XWB operator in the Americas), along with three A380s.  

Taking December’s results into account, the record 635 deliveries by Airbus during 2015 exceeded its targets for the year and also marked the 13^th consecutive annual increase in output.

These deliveries comprise: 491 A320 Family aircraft; 103 A330s; 27 A380s; and 14 A350 XWBs. This production achievement means that Airbus’ aircraft deliveries in 2015 were up for the 13th year in a row, surpassing the previous year-end delivery record of 629 aircraft – set in 2014.

Price adjustment for Airbus’ modern, fuel-efficient aircraft Family

Airbus has increased the average list prices of its aircraft by 1.1 per cent across the product line. The new pricing is effective from January 1st 2016. The 1.1 per cent price increase has been calculated according to Airbus’ standard escalation formula over the January 2015 to January 2016 period and takes into account the drop in materials and commodities prices.

“Our new 2016 price increase reflects the strong appetite from customers around the globe for Airbus’ comprehensive, modern and innovative product range,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “We see demand for our aircraft continuing to grow across all size categories as our reliable, efficient product line enables customers to grow their businesses profitably as well as being favoured by passengers who want to travel in the most comfortable cabins.”

Airbus has exceeded its targets for 2015, achieving a new record of 635 aircraft deliveries for 85 customers of which 10 are new. These deliveries comprise: 491 A320 Family aircraft; 103 A330s; 27 A380s; and 14 A350 XWBs. This production achievement means that Airbus’ aircraft deliveries in 2015 were up for the 13^th year in a row, surpassing the previous year-end delivery record of 629 aircraft – set in 2014.

Airbus also achieved 1,036 net orders from 53 customers (of which eight are new), comprising 897 single-aisle aircraft and 139 widebodies. At 2015 year-end the overall backlog had climbed to a new industry record of 6,787 aircraft valued at US$996.3 billion at list prices.

Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and CEO said: “This commercial and industrial performance unequivocally proves that global demand for our aircraft has remained resilient.” He adds: “In 2015 Airbus has also laid firm foundations for the future, increasing the capability and variety of the aircraft which we can offer to our customers.”

Overall, 2015 has been a year of solid and wide-ranging Airbus accomplishments. For example, the A320neo was certified by the aviation authorities on both sides of the Atlantic just five years after its launch. In addition, Airbus delivered 14 A350s – making good its pledge to the airlines who are now benefitting from the world’s most efficient and advanced airliner. Important progress was also made on the A350 programme’s next variant, the A350-1000 – whose major components and structures are now taking shape across various production sites. Likewise, parts are now in production for the first A330neo – with the machining of its first engine pylon and centre wing-box components. In addition, there has been good news for the flagship A380, 10 years after its first flight, with the programme breaking-even for the first time.

Another notable highlight was of course September’s official opening of the first Airbus factory in the US, at Mobile on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, where between 40 and 50 A320 Family aircraft will be produced annually by 2018. On the other side of the globe in China, additional orders for the A330 not only complements our plans for a new A330 completion and delivery centre in Tianjin, but also helps to smooth our transition towards the A330neo. Furthermore, in 2015 Airbus launched three new incremental aircraft developments which include: the Long-Range version of the A321neo which will offer true transatlantic operation; the Regional version of the A330 which is optimized to seat up to 400 passengers on missions up to 3,000nm; and the Ultra-Long-Range version of the A350-900, capable of 19-hour flights.

BOC Aviation orders 30 A320 Family aircraft

Confirms continuing strong appetite for best-selling, fuel efficient A320 Family

BOC Aviation, the Singapore-based global aircraft leasing company owned by Bank of China, has announced an order for an additional 30 A320 Family aircraft, comprising 18 A320neo Family aircraft and 12 A320ceo Family aircraft. 

“This order underscores our continued confidence in the reliability and operational efficiency of the A320 family aircraft, and reflects its popularity among our customers for short- and medium-haul routes,” said Robert Martin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BOC Aviation.  

“BOC Aviation is a leading lessor based in a fast-growing part of the world, and its latest order not only demonstrates its continued confidence in our product for its airline customers but recognizes the A320 as a sound financial asset in its portfolio,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “We appreciate the mutually beneficial and strong relationship we have built with BOC Aviation over the past 20 years. With this order, BOC Aviation becomes one of Airbus’ top 10 customers.”

Including this latest purchase agreement, BOC Aviation’s cumulative orders to date for new Airbus aircraft have reached a total of 306, comprising 12 A330s and 294 A320 Family, including 64 NEOs. 

With more than 12,300 aircraft ordered, and more than 6,800 aircraft delivered to more than 400 customers and operators worldwide, Airbus’ A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family.  The A320neo Family incorporates latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklet wing tip devices, which together deliver more than 15 percent in fuel savings from day one and 20 percent by 2020 with further cabin innovations. With more than 4,400 orders received from close to 80 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured some 60 percent share of the market.
