Spring Airlines to become the first customer for Sharklet retrofit in China

China’s first LCC invests in new technologies for fuel-saving

Spring Airlines, a low-cost carrier based in Shanghai, China, has signed an agreement with Airbus for Sharklet retrofit of its A320 aircraft in operation to become the first Chinese airline to perform retrofit of the latest fuel saving device. 

Thanks to this aerodynamic upgrade, Spring Airlines’ retrofitted aircraft will benefit from a reduction in fuel costs by up to 4 per cent, an annual 900t reduction in CO2 emissions, an increased mission range by up to 100 nautical miles and improved performances at high elevation airports.

Spring Airlines took delivery of its first A320 with Sharklets in September 2013. Since then the operator has been evaluating the effect of Sharklets on the operational performance of its fleet of six Sharklet-equipped A320s. Based on the proven operational advantage observed from more than 8500 accumulated flight hours, Spring Airlines has decided to select Sharklets for all its new deliveries and now has decided to expand the option to its in-service fleet.

“We are delighted to be the first airline in China to perform Sharklet retrofit to our aircraft in operation,” said Wang Zhenghua, Chairman of Spring Airlines. “As a low-cost operator, Spring Airlines is committed to offering our passengers with the most efficient means of transportation but keeping the fares at a level which is affordable to the general public. We are willing to invest in new technologies that help us further reduce the operational cost of our all Airbus A320 fleet, which is already a benchmark of the industry,” Wang added.

“We are delighted to see Spring Airlines, the first low cost carrier in China, to take another pioneering step this time to become the first Chinese airline for Sharklet retrofit,” said Rafael Gonzalez-Ripoll, Chief Operating Officer, Airbus China. “We will provide Spring Airlines with the strongest support for the retrofit and for the smooth operation of the airline’s all Airbus fleet,” he added.

Sharklets are made from light-weight composites and are 2.4 meters tall. They are an option on new-build A320 Family aircraft and standard on all members of the new A320neo family. They offer operators up to four per cent fuel burn reduction on longer range sectors and provide the flexibility of either adding an additional 100 nautical miles range or increased payload capability of up to 450 kilograms.

Following the success of line-fit Sharklets, Airbus, via its Upgrade Services business unit, entered service with the retrofit programme in February 2013 for all A320 Family aircraft equipped with the latest standard wings.

THE MONTH IN REVIEW: SEPTEMBER 2014

The continued market demand for Airbus’ product line of widebody and single-aisle jetliners was underscored by the 76 orders logged during September for its A320ceo (current engine option) and A320neo (new engine option) families, along with the A330ceo, while the company maintained its 2014 delivery pace with 54 aircraft provided to international customers.

Leading the month’s single-aisle bookings was easyJet’s order for 27 additional current engine option A320s, taking this carrier’s combined total order for the type to 315 aircraft – and continuing it as an all-Airbus operator.       

SWISS, which is a member-airline of the Lufthansa Group, will expand its fleet with 10 A320neo and 5 A321neo jetliners, with these fuel-efficient aircraft gradually renewing and replacing SWISS’ existing fleet of A320 Family aircraft. 

In another September booking, the Lufthansa Group’s supervisory board approved the purchase of 10 A320ceo aircraft for its Eurowings subsidiary. These jetliners are to become the backbone of the new low cost business model announced by the Lufthansa Group in July 2014, which foresees Eurowings operations on direct connections within Europe.

Completing the month’s single-aisle transactions were eight Qatar Airways Group A320ceo aircraft, along with four A319ceo jetliners for Z/C Aviation Partners.

For Airbus’ widebody A330 product line, the September results included International Airlines Group’s decision to convert eight previously-announced A330-200 options into firm orders for Spanish flag carrier Iberia, which will become a new operator of this version.  Iberia’s all-Airbus fleet already includes eight A330-300s, and its new -200s will be delivered from the end of 2015.

Also reflected in the month’s new business was the transaction with Air Algérie for three A330-200s, to be deployed as part of the carrier’s continued growth plans.  Completing the activity was an ACJ330-200 corporate jet order for a private customer.

Taking cancellations into account, Airbus’ net orders for 2014 totalled 791 aircraft at the end of September.

The month’s deliveries involved 42 A320 Family jetliners, eight A330s and four A380s.  This included the first A320 provided for Vistara Airlines – a promising Indian start-up carrier – which was delivered via lessor BOC Aviation. Also during September, seven A320 family aircraft were provided for U.S.-based American Airlines.

Among the month’s A380 deliveries was the initial aircraft for Qatar Airways.  The September handovers brought the total number of A380s provided to customers so far in 2014 to 21.

Taking into account the September orders and deliveries activity, Airbus completed the month with a backlog of 5,907 aircraft – another industry record.

Airbus readies A350 XWB for first customer Qatar Airways

Inaugural delivery scheduled before year end

The first A350 XWB for Qatar Airways is progressing towards delivery before year end. The aircraft equipped with Rolls Royce Trent XWB engines rolled out of the Airbus factory in Toulouse fully painted, prominently bearing Qatar Airways’ livery.

Following the recent EASA Type Certification, the Qatar Airways A350-900 is now entering into its final stage of production during which Airbus and the airline teams are actively working together in order to ensure a seamless hand-over process. The remaining steps up to delivery comprise notably the cabin completion as well as ground and flight tests.

The A350 XWB is Airbus’ all-new mid-size long range product line and the newest member of Airbus' leading widebody family. The A350 XWB stands out in its class thanks to its combination of passenger comfort, technological innovation and its unique industrial process. Built hand-in-hand with our customers, the A350 XWB sets new standards in terms of passenger experience, operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. At the end of September 2014, the A350 XWB had won 750 orders from 39 customers worldwide.

First A350 XWB for Vietnam Airlines enters final assembly

Final assembly of the first A350 XWB for Vietnam Airlines has begun at the Roger Béteille Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Toulouse, France.

Scheduled for delivery in mid-2015, the aircraft will see Vietnam Airlines become the first Asian airline to fly the A350 XWB and the second operator in the world of the all-new, fuel-efficient widebody.

Vietnam Airlines has a total of 10 A350 XWB on order. The aircraft will be operated on the carrier’s premium long range services.

The five A350 test aircraft currently flying have accumulated some 2600 flight hours in over 600 flights, with entry into service planned for Q4 2014. The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) will bring a step change in efficiency compared with existing aircraft in this size category, using 25 per cent less fuel and providing an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions. To date, the A350 XWB has already won 750 firm orders from 39 customers worldwide.

IAG converts eight A330-200 options into firm orders

Iberia to become new operator of the efficient A330-200

IAG has decided to convert eight A330-200 options, previously announced, into firm orders for Spain’s flag carrier Iberia, which will become a new operator of the A330-200.  The aircraft will be delivered from the end 2015 and will be equipped with GE CF6 engines. Iberia’s all Airbus fleet already includes eight A330-300s.

“We are just delighted that Iberia has reconfirmed its confidence in the A330, and are extremely pleased to welcome them as a new operator of the A330-200 benefiting from the enhanced performance that the new 242 tonne version brings, while continuing to deliver the family synergies of an all Airbus fleet,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers.

Iberia today operates an all Airbus fleet, including 13 A319, 12 A320, 18 A321, 8 A330-300, 8 A340-300 and 17 A340-600. On 1^st August 2014, the new A330s were announced alongside an order for eight Airbus A350-900 aircraft. In total they will replace 16 A340 family aircraft in Iberia’s long-haul fleet. The airline flies to more than a 100 destinations in 38 countries.

The A330 Family, which spans 250 to 300 seats, has now attracted more than 1,300 orders, with over 1,000 aircraft flying with more than 100 operators worldwide. The A330 is one of the world’s most efficient aircraft with best in class operating economics, averaging dispatch reliability well above 99 percent.

easyJet orders 27 more A320 aircraft

A320 Family delivers the best operating costs and passenger comfort

easyJet has placed an order for 27 additional current engine option A320s, taking its combined total order for the type to 315 aircraft. With an all Airbus fleet, easyJet selected the A320 Family aircraft as it delivers the best operating economics and the roomiest cabin for unequalled passenger comfort in the single aisle category.

"We are bringing new aircraft into the fleet as we continue to see a significant number of new profitable opportunities in our core markets in the near term and in order to maintain our cost advantage," said Carolyn McCall, easyJet Chief Executive.

“easyJet is a demanding customer and this repeat order is as solid an endorsement as you can get for the A320’s proven productivity, reliability and comfort. The A320 Family has the widest cabin which also helps with faster airport turnaround times,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. 

The A320 Family aircraft already offer the lowest operating costs of any single aisle aircraft and the Sharklet wing tip devices help to reduce fuel burn by a further four per cent and to increase range by 100nm. 

Currently easyJet operates a fleet of some 225 A320 Family aircraft. In June 2013, EasyJet became a customer for the A320neo, with an order for 100 aircraft. Altogether, with this latest order, easyJet’s combined total order for all members of the A320 Family rises to 415 aircraft. 

easyJet is the largest A320 Family customer and operator in Europe and operates one of Europe’s most extensive route networks. The airline is the UK’s largest by numbers of passengers carried. 

The A320 Family is the world’s most successful with nearly 11,000 ordered and over 6,200 delivered to over 400 customers and operators.

Swiss International Air Lines orders up to 25 A320neo

Successful A320 operations expand with eco-efficient NEOs

Lufthansa Group’s supervisory board has announced that SWISS, a member-airline of the Group, will expand its A320 fleet with a firm order for 15 A320neo aircraft, plus an additional ten of the type to be confirmed at a later stage. The fuel-efficient NEO-fleet will gradually renew and replace SWISS’ existing fleet of A320 Family aircraft.

“Our decision to go with the cleanest, the most reliable and the most efficient belongs to the image of Switzerland, thus the A320neo was a natural fit with our modernization strategy,” says Nico Buchholz, Executive Vice President Lufthansa Group Fleet Management.

“We are delighted to welcome SWISS as a new customer for the A320neo and thank the Swiss Flag carrier for their continuous confidence in our products,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer Customers. “For many years SWISS has successfully cashed in on all the economic and environmental benefits the A320 Family offers. SWISS is the national airline of Switzerland and with A319s, A320s, A321s, A330s and A340s in its fleet the carrier will be able to take maximum benefit from the unique commonality across the Airbus Family.

The A320neo – for “new engine option” – incorporates many innovations, including latest generation engines and large Sharklet wing-tip devices, which together deliver 15 percent in fuel savings and a reduction of 3,600 tonnes of CO₂ per aircraft per year. With more than 3,250 orders received from 60 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured a solid 60 percent share of the market, clearly demonstrating its leadership.
