Airbus to establish assembly line in United States

Industry-leading A320 Family aircraft to be made in largest single-aisle aircraft market

In a major strategic announcement today, Airbus said it will establish a manufacturing facility in the United States to assemble and deliver A320 Family aircraft. Located at the Brookley Aeroplex in Mobile, Alabama, it will be the company’s first U.S.-based production facility. Airbus stressed that the assembly line, which will create jobs and strengthen the aerospace industry, is part of its strategy to enhance Airbus’ global competitiveness by meeting the growing needs of its customers in the United States and elsewhere.

The facility in Alabama will assemble the industry-leading family of A319, A320 and A321 aircraft. The company said construction of the assembly line will begin in summer 2013. Aircraft assembly is planned to start in 2015, with first deliveries from the Mobile facility beginning in 2016. Airbus anticipates the facility will produce between 40 and 50 aircraft per year by 2018.

“The time is right for Airbus to expand in America,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President & CEO at the announcement today in Mobile. “The U.S. is the largest single-aisle aircraft market in the world – with a projected need for 4,600 aircraft over the next 20 years - and this assembly line brings us closer to our customers. Mobile is now becoming part of Airbus’ global production network, joining our successful and growing assembly lines in Hamburg, Toulouse and Tianjin.

Airbus already has a strong and growing presence in Alabama and throughout the United States. In Alabama, the company operates an Engineering Center in Mobile – also located at Brookley Aeroplex and employing more than 200 engineers and support staff – as well as an Airbus Military customer services operation supporting U.S. Coast Guard aircraft. In addition, Airbus operates an Engineering Center in Wichita, Kansas; an aircraft Spares Center in Ashburn, Virginia; a Training Center in Miami, Florida, and a regulatory and government liaison office in Washington, D.C. Subsidiary Metron Aviation, a leading provider of advanced Air Traffic Management (ATM) products and services, is based in Dulles, Virginia. Airbus’ headquarters for the Americas are located in Herndon, Virginia. All together, Airbus’ U.S. facilities currently employ more than 1,000 people.

The company said that the new Mobile assembly line, together with associated functions, should create as many as 1,000 new high-skilled jobs.

Airbus’ assembly line in Mobile will add to existing production capabilities by other EADS companies in the United States. For example, American Eurocopter manufactures helicopters at facilities in Columbus, Mississippi and Grand Prairie, Texas, while Cassidian Communications has an assembly plant in Temecula, California.

Airbus is the largest export customer for the U.S. aerospace industry. Since 1990, the company has spent $127 billion with U.S. suppliers – $12 billion last year alone.

Airbus partners with hundreds of US suppliers in more than 40 US states, and the company’s expenditures in the U.S. support more than 210,000 American jobs.

Airbus is the leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive family of airliners on the market, ranging in capacity from 100 to more than 500 seats. Over 11,500 Airbus aircraft have been sold to more than 470 customers and operators worldwide and more than 7,200 of these have been delivered since the company first entered the market in the early seventies. Incident: THY A319 near Ankara on Jun 15th 2012, bomb hoax on lavatory mirror

By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, Jun 28th 2012 13:07Z, last updated Thursday, Jun 28th 2012 13:07Z A THY Turkish Airlines Airbus A319-100, registration TC-JUA performing flight TK-2201 from Kahramanmaras to Istanbul (Turkey) with 120 passengers, was enroute at FL300 about 160nm southeast of Ankara (Turkey) when the word "BOMMM" was found written on a lavatory mirror with a blue pen. The captain decided to divert to Ankara as a precaution, the aircraft landed safely on Ankara's runway 21R about 25 minutes later. The aircraft taxied to a remote area, the passengers disembarked normally. The aircraft, passengers and luggage were searched with no traces of explosives found. In order to not inconvenience the innocent amongst the passengers any further the aircraft was permitted to continue to Istanbul about 2:45 hours after landing after all passengers had submitted samples of their writing. The aircraft reached Istanbul with a delay of 3:20 hours. Police is still working to determine who wrote onto the lavatory mirror. Incident: Indigo A320 at Srinagar on Jun 28th 2012, bird strike By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, Jun 28th 2012 19:36Z, last updated Thursday, Jun 28th 2012 19:36Z An Indigo Airbus A320-200, flight 6E-448 from Srinagar to Mumbai (India) with 182 people on board, was climbing through about 1500 feet out of Srinagar when the crew suspected a bird strike into one of the engines and decided to return to Srinagar for a safe landing. A replacement aircraft reached Mumbai with a delay of 5 hours. The airline said, the crew suspected a bird strike and returned to Mumbai for a normal landing. ncident: Air France A388 near Gothenburg on Jul 1st 2012, door problems By Simon Hradecky, created Sunday, Jul 1st 2012 17:20Z, last updated Sunday, Jul 1st 2012 22:42Z An Air France Airbus A380-800, registration F-HPJG performing flight AF-276 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Tokyo Narita (Japan), had just reached FL370 about 45nm eastnortheast of Gothenburg (Sweden) when the crew reported door problems and requested to descend to FL250. The aircraft dumped fuel over the Baltic Sea and set course to return to Paris where the aircraft landed safely on runway 27L at about 19:49L (17:49Z) about 5 hours after departure. Sweden's Civil Aviation Authority said the crew reported door problems and requested to dump fuel over the Baltic Sea. The airline reported the aircraft returned to Paris for technical checks. The flight is estimated to depart again at 23:30L (21:30Z). A replacement Airbus A380-800 registration F-HPJF departed runway 09R at 00:36L (Jul 2nd, 22:36Z Jul 1st) about 4:45 hours after landing and is estimated to reach Tokyo with a delay of 10 hours. Incident: S7 A313 at Moscow on Jul 2nd 2012, could not fully retract gear By Simon Hradecky, created Monday, Jul 2nd 2012 14:43Z, last updated Monday, Jul 2nd 2012 14:43Z A S7 Sibir Airlines Airbus A310-300, registration S7-943 from Moscow Domodedovo (Russia) to Bourgas (Bulgaria), was climbing out of Domodedovo's runway 14L when the crew stopped the climb at FL100 reporting they could not fully retract the landing gear. The aircraft entered a holding at FL080 and returned to Moscow's Domodedovo Airport for a safe landing on runway 32R about 50 minutes after departure. A replacement Airbus A319-100 registration VP-BHG reached Bourgas with a delay of 4.5 hours.

THAI Smile takes delivery of its first A320

New regional air services to start operations in July with all-Airbus fleet

THAI Smile, the new light premium regional sub-brand of Thai Airways International (THAI), has taken delivery of its first aircraft, an Airbus A320, in Hamburg, Germany on Friday 28th June. The delivery sees the THAI group become a new operator of the A320 Family, which joins an existing fleet of widebody Airbus aircraft flying with the airline.

Seating 174 passengers, the aircraft are powered by IAE V2527-A5 engines. The Bangkok-based carrier will start regional operations on 7th July with daily flights to Macau, before flying domestically to Krabi, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani and Phuket. These will be followed by new routes to more international destinations.

"We are delighted to take delivery of our brand new Airbus A320.” said Mr Woranate Laprabang, Managing Director of THAI Smile. “Thanks to the A320’s cabin comfort and operational reliability, THAI Smile will be able to service the market gap between low-cost and full service airlines.”

The aircraft is the first of 11 A320s which will be delivered by mid-2015. The first six aircraft are being leased from SMBC Aviation Capital. The company’s CEO, Peter Barrett, said: “This is our first transaction with THAI Smile, and we look forward to building a close relationship with them in the coming years. The fact that we now own and manage 69 A320s and have a further 45 on order is a clear reflection of the high regard in which we and our customers hold this outstanding aircraft.” 

The remaining five aircraft are directly purchased from Airbus andwill be equipped with new “Sharklet" wing tip devices, which will deliver up to 3.5 percent in fuel savings.

THAI is one of Airbus’ longest standing customers. The A320 joins an Airbus fleet at THAI which currently includes the A300, A330 and A340, with the A380 set to enter service with the carrier later this year. THAI will also be an operator of the all-new A350 XWB.

The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line. To date, more than 8,400 aircraft have already been ordered and some 5,100 delivered to more than 360 customers and operators worldwide. With proven reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single-aisle aircraft.

First MAS A380 revealed in special livery

The first A380 for Malaysia Airlines (MAS) was unveiled today bearing its special celebration livery, ahead of entry-into-service next week on the Kuala Lumpur-London route.

The livery was designed by MAS specifically for it its new A380 flagship and was applied post-delivery by Airbus in Toulouse.

Altogether MAS has ordered six A380s with a premium layout seating 494 passengers in three classes.

First THAI A380 rolls out of paint shop

The first A380 for Thai Airways International (THAI) was rolled out of the Airbus paint shop in Hamburg over the weekend, bearing the airline’s distinctive livery.

This marks the completion of the painting and cabin installation work on the aircraft, which will now enter a final phase of ground and flight tests in Hamburg. During this phase of production all cabin systems will be thoroughly tested, including air flow and air conditioning, lighting, galleys, lavatories, seats and in-flight entertainment. In parallel, Airbus will also undertake advanced general performance tests with the aircraft before it flies to Toulouse for preparation for delivery to the airline in the third quarter of the year.

THAI will become the ninth operator of the A380. The airline has firm orders for six A380s and will operate the aircraft on its premier routes from Bangkok to Europe.

Transaero Airlines firms up order for four A380s

First A380 customer in Russia, the CIS and Eastern Europe

Transaero Airlines, Russia’s second largest airline, has completed a purchase agreement with Airbus for four A380 aircraft. The agreement was signed today by Olga Pleshakova, Transaero Airlines CEO and Christopher Buckley, Airbus’ Executive Vice President Europe, Asia and the Pacific on the first day of the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum. This order follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed in October 2011. The deal will be financed with the support of VEB Leasing.

Transaero becomes the first customer for the A380 in Russia, the CIS and Eastern Europe. The Russian carrier plans to start operations with the A380 on its long-range network of high density routes from Moscow. The aircraft will feature a three class cabin layout, seating about 700 passengers. Transaero will announce the engine selection soon.

”Our airline, with its strong innovation culture, will be the first in Russia to fly the A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft. I am sure that the operation of the A380 will stimulate the development of Russia’s aviation sector, in particular, its ground infrastructure. In addition, our passengers will benefit from the completely new air travel experience that the A380 offers with its spacious, comfortable cabin, for their long-haul flights.” said Olga Pleshakova, Transaero Airlines CEO.

Transaero Airlines launched its services in November 1991, and currently serves more than 130 routes all over the world.

Since entering service in 2007 the eco-efficient A380 has exceeded all expectations, flying more people further at lower cost (over 23 million passengers up to date). The spacious, quiet cabin and the smooth ride have made the aircraft a favourite with passengers. This has resulted in higher than average load factors and increased profitability on A380 flights, providing airlines with a key competitive advantage wherever they operate the type. With 100 flights per day, the A380 is becoming a familiar sight at airports across the globe. The A380 fleet transports one million passengers each month and performs a takeoff or landing every eight minutes.

Including today’s orders for four A380 from Transaero, the total A380 order book stands at 257 aircraft from 20 customers worldwide. To date, Airbus has delivered 77 aircraft to eight customers.

Norwegian firms up order for 100 Airbus A320neo

Norwegian, one of the largest low cost carriers in Europe, has firmed up its order for 100 A320neo aircraft with Airbus. This follows a commitment signed in January. The order makes Norwegian a new Airbus customer, and as well, one of the biggest A320neo customers.

Norwegian (the brand name of Norwegian Air Shuttle AS) operates a network across Europe into North Africa and the Middle East, and is rapidly expanding its low cost operations. The new aircraft will feature a single class cabin layout, seating approximately 180 passengers. The A320neo will support the carrier’s growth and modernization strategy.

This order gives us an opportunity to secure and invest in the company's future,” said Norwegian's CEO Bjørn Kjos. "Brand new, fuel-efficient aircraft are necessary for us to continue to grow. Norwegian will become among the first airlines in Scandinavia to benefit from the A320neo’s increased capabilities, including a 15 percent reduction in fuel burn and emissions” said John Leahy.

The A320neo is a new engine option for the A320 Family entering into service from 2015 and incorporates latest generation engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel savings. The reduction in fuel burn is equivalent to 1.4 million litres of fuel - the consumption of 1,000 mid size cars, saving 3,600 tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year. The A320neo NOx emissions are 50% below CAEP/6, and this aircraft also has a considerably smaller noise footprint.

Over 8,400 A320 Family aircraft have been ordered and more than 5,100 delivered to about 350 customers and operators worldwide reaffirming its position as the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft Family. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload at a given range.

The crew stopped the climb and decided return to Chongqing. The aircraft entered a holding to burn off fuel and landed safely about one hour after departure. A replacement aircraft reached Beijing with a delay of 3 hours Incident: Air India A321 at Kozhikode on Apr 30th 2012, bird strike By Simon Hradecky, created Monday, Apr 30th 2012 14:41Z, last updated Monday, Apr 30th 2012 14:41Z An Air India Airbus A321-200, registration VT-PPV performing flight AI-937 from Kozhikode (India) to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) with 148 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out of Kozhikode when the right hand engine (CFM56) ingested a bird prompting the crew to return to Kozhikode, where the aircraft landed safely. A post flight inspection revealed several bent fan blades on the right hand engine. A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration VT-PPM reached Dubai with a delay of 4 hours. Incident: Singapore A388 over Andaman Islands on Apr 26th 2012, navigation system problems By Simon Hradecky, created Thursday, Apr 26th 2012 15:16Z, last updated Monday, Apr 30th 2012 14:56Z A Singapore Airlines Airbus A380-800, registration 9V-SKQ performing flight SQ-318 from Singapore (Singapore) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute near the Andaman Islands about three hours into the flight when the crew decided to return to Singapore due to problems with the navigation systems and autopilot. The crew dumped fuel on their way back to Singapore. The aircraft landed safely back in Singapore about 6 hours after departure. The flight is now estimated to depart Singapore with a delay of 11 hours. Passengers reported the crew wasn't very clear in their announcements, they understood technical problems with the navigation systems that also knocked the autopilot off. Passenger Lisa told The Aviation Herald, that she was listening to music and waiting for her meal to be served, when a loud bang was heard sounding like "like a thunder clap or a car backfiring" followed by immediate violent shaking of the aircraft spilling the drinks everywhere and banging the service carts into the seats. The shaking stopped after about 3-4 seconds and did not re-occur. Lisa, seated in the back of the cabin, had the impression the bang came from very close and her right hand side. There were no comments from any passenger regarding observations on the engines or the like. Some time later passengers at the window seats observed fuel dump had started. About 45 minutes after the bang the crew announced that some turbulence had knocked off their autopilot and they were returning to Singapore. The aircraft descended to about FL200 (editorial note: radar data showed the aircraft coming into radar range of Malaysia's Penang Airport, about 350nm northwest of Singapore, at FL210), the gear was lowered in order to burn off fuel on the way back to Singapore. Maintenance replaced the captain's angle of attack sensor and released the aircraft to depart again with a replacement crew. The aircraft reached Detroit with a delay of 5 hours. The aircraft landed safely back on Karachi's runway 25L about 20 minutes after departure. The aircraft was able to depart again after two hours on the ground and reached Peshawar with a delay of 2.5 hours. Accident: Aerolineas Argentinas A343 near Quito on Apr 30th 2012, turbulence injures 9 By Simon Hradecky, created Tuesday, May 1st 2012 14:22Z, last updated Friday, May 4th 2012 13:23Z An Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340-300, registration LV-CSD performing flight AR-1387 from Cancun (Mexico) to Buenos Aires Ezeiza,BA (Argentina) with 213 passengers, was enroute at FL370 east of Quito (Ecuador) around 16:30Z when the aircraft encountered turbulence resulting in several oxygen masks dropping and causing minor injuries to a number of passengers. The crew continued the flight to Buenos Aires where the aircraft landed safely on runway 11 about 5.5 hours later. 9 passengers were taken to hospitals with bruises and quickly released. A passenger reported the aircraft was hit by two turbulence encounters causing the injuries. A doctor on board provided first aid. Another passenger reported the aircraft experienced two large jolts causing passengers, who had not fastened their seat belts, to lift off and contact the cabin ceiling. The fasten seat belt signs were turned off at that time. The crew later announced they had encountered clear air turbulence not depicted by the weather radar. The aircraft landed safely back on runway 09L about 2 hours after departure. The flight was subsequently cancelled. Incident: Monarch A321 near Manchester on May 4th 2012, engine problem By Simon Hradecky, created Saturday, May 5th 2012 17:36Z, last updated Saturday, May 5th 2012 17:36Z A Monarch Airlines Airbus A321-200, registration G-OZBM performing flight ZB-581 from Faro (Portugal) to Manchester,EN (UK), was enroute at FL330 close to the top of descent into Manchester when the crew declared emergency reporting problems with the right hand engine (V2533). The aircraft landed safely on Manchester's runway 05R and vacated the runway stopping on the adjacent taxiway to have emergency services inspect the right hand engine. The aircraft is still on the ground 24 hours later.

First new-build Sharklet-equipped A320 completed in Toulouse

Airbus has produced the first new-build A320 with Sharklets. Depicted here at its roll-out in Toulouse, MSN 5098 will be one of several A320 Family aircraft in the certification flight-test campaign starting in May this year and lasting around 600 flight hours. These Sharklet tests follow the successful ‘early flight-test’ campaign with Airbus’ A320 MSN 001 test aircraft.

In total, seven new-build A320 Family aircraft fitted with both CFM56 and V2500 engine types will test the production-standard Sharklets. The results of the tests will lead up to the certification of these fuel-saving devices on each combination of aircraft model and engine selection. The first member of the family to enter service with Sharklets will be the CFM56-powered A320, from the fourth quarter of 2012.

Sharklets, which have been specially designed for the Airbus A320 Family, will reduce fuel burn by up to 3.5 percent, giving an annual CO2 reduction of around 700 tonnes per aircraft. This is equivalent to the CO2 produced by around 200 cars annually. Sharklets are now offered as an option on new-build aircraft, and are standard on the A320neo Family.
