Aer Lingus set to add A321(XLR)s

After reaching an agreement with the Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association (IALPA), Aer Lingus (EI, Dublin International) is once again due to receive two A321-200NY(XLR), Adrian Dunne, the airline’s chief operations officer, said.

“We now have the cost certainty to welcome the A321neo(XLR) into Aer Lingus, with the first two aircraft arriving in Q4 2024,” he said in a post on social media. The Irish Times reported that IAG International Airlines Group could allocate up to six XLRs to the Irish carrier; the remaining four will arrive in 2025. Aer Lingus has not yet announced which routes the new jets will operate.

Sister carrier Iberia (IB, Madrid Barajas) continues to be the launch operator of the new Airbus narrowbody type, a spokesperson told ch-aviation.

Aer Lingus was the XLR's original launch operator. However, due to the pilot pay dispute, IAG dropped Aer Lingus and instead opted for Iberia to receive the first A321neo(XLR). The XLR is set to be introduced into commercial service in mid-November when the Spanish airline deploys it from Madrid to Boston.

Recently, A321neo(XLR) msn 11348 was seen in Aer Lingus’s livery (although its engines still bear the Iberia logo). Meanwhile, EC-OIL (msn 11504) is already fully painted in the Spanish airline’s livery.

ch-aviation has contacted Aer Lingus for comment.

In 2019, IAG ordered fourteen A321neo(XLR)s, six destined for Aer Lingus and eight for Iberia.

United Airlines to add first A321neo(XLR) in late 4Q25

United Airlines (UA, Chicago O'Hare) is set to receive its first A321-200NY(XLR) in December 2025 and will use these new-gen Airbus narrowbodies to replace its ageing Boeing B757 fleet.

In an interview with Business Insider, United’s senior vice president for global network planning and alliances, Patrick Quayle, said the B757 is becoming uneconomical to use for the cities and smaller markets it serves, such as Tenerife Sur and Reykjavik Keflavik. "But we want to continue flying to these cities, and the A321neo(XLR) is long-ranged and has much better fuel burn and maintenance costs.”

The Chicago-based carrier has an order for fifty A321neo(XLR)s. They will mainly be used on flights to international destinations. United currently operates its B757-200s and B757-300s to international destinations such as Dublin InternationalEdinburghShannonLima InternationalLisbonMalagaPorto, Tenerife, and Reykjavik, the ch-aviation schedules module shows. They are also used broadly in domestic operations across the United States.

However, Quayle said the carrier is also looking at new destinations, previously unreachable with narrowbody gauge aircraft, such as France, Italy, Scandinavia, and parts of Africa. “The A321neo(XLR) can fly much further [than the 757] and will open up new stations that either don’t have service from an airline today, or don’t have United Airlines' service.”

ch-aviation has contacted United Airlines for comment. The ch-aviation fleets module shows the carrier has forty B757-200s (averaging 27.6 years of age) and twenty-one B757-300s (22.1 years on average).

Airbus is set to deliver the first XLR to Iberia (IB, Madrid Barajas) later this year. In November, the Spanish carrier will introduce it to commercial service from Madrid Barajas to Boston.

A321N KLM 640KLM takes delivery of 1st Airbus A321neo

27 August 2024, is an important date for KLM as it's the day when the airline took delivery of its first Airbus A321neo, kicking-off its mainline narrowbody replacement programme.

After a festive ceremony at the Airbus-plant at Hamburg-Finkenwerder, A321-200NX PH-AXA (11895) was ferried to Schiphol where it landed safely just before 15:00 hrs local time. The delivery flight was very popular and was even briefly the most followed flight on Flightradar24!

This year, KLM will take delivery of three more A321neos. Entry into commercial service is scheduled to begin next month, with the type first being used to Berlin, Copenhagen and Stockholm.

A359 Edelweiss 6401st Airbus A350-900 for Edelweiss breaks cover

Malcolm Nason was present at Shannon on 14 August 2024, when the first Airbus A350-900 for Edelweiss Air broke cover after being painted at the airport.

The aircraft involved is currently registered OE-LHF (079) and will become HB-IHC once in service. Commercial flights are scheduled to begin in April next year.

The close observer will notice a slight modification to the airline's livery, with the red of the tail now swooping onto the fuselage a bit.

In total, Edelweiss Air will add six A350s to its fleet. Four of them are former LATAM-aircraft, while the remaining two are currently in use with Thai Airways.

The airline will use its new widebody aircraft to replace its current long-haul fleet of five A340-300s.

 airBaltic firms Airbus A220-300 options

On 13 August 2024, airBaltic and Airbus announced that both companies agreed to the firming of options on the A220-300 by the airline into firm order. In total, airBaltic is firming ten orders, bringing the total number of A220s ordered to 90.

The ten options were part of a previous deal announced by both companies during the Dubai Air Show of 2023. Then, the airline placed a firm order for 30 A220s with 20 options. Now, ten options remain.

Delivery of the 40 A220s are expected to take place from 2026 onwards.

Etihad Airways touts 3Q25 debut, first class for A321neo(LR)

Etihad Airways (EY, Abu Dhabi International) plans to configure its A321-200NX(LR)s, due next year, with first and lie-flat business class seats; a first for its narrowbody fleet. The Emirati carrier tentatively aims to debut the type on the Phuket route in August 2025.

Aeroroutes reports the airline plans to operate one of its three daily rotations to Phuket with the new type, replacing the usual B787-9s. The other two rotations will operate with B787-10s. According to Etihad's internet booking engine, the A321neo(LR) will be configured for up to 160 passengers, including two first-class seats, fourteen business class lie-flat seats in a 1-1 configuration, and 144 economy class seats.

"As Etihad Airways advances its ambitious fleet expansion, the airline looks forward to welcoming new aircraft to its fleet next year. As we prepare for their arrival, guests and travel agents may notice these aircraft appearing on select routes in our GDS system. While the specifics of the aircraft, onboard offerings, and their destinations remain under wraps for now, we’re excited to reveal more in the coming months when we officially unveil our enhanced network and product offerings," the carrier's spokesperson told ch-aviation.

Etihad Airways has twenty A321-200NX(LR)s on order from Airbus, placed in 2013 when it was aggressively expanding. The carrier said it would deploy these aircraft on medium- and long-haul routes that are too thin to sustain daily frequencies with widebodies.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows that despite years of restructuring, Etihad's fleet remains skewed towards widebodies. Its narrowbody fleet comprises fourteen A320-200s, nine A321-200s, four A321-200Ns, and one A321-200NX (with one more due). The second-hand A321neo were inducted earlier this year independent of the unfilled Airbus order. They are all ex-Bamboo Airways (QH, Hanoi Noi Bai International) stock.

Etihad's widebody fleet includes five A350-1000s (with 15 more on order), ten A380-800s, nine B777-300(ER)s, thirty-three B787-9s (eight more on order), and ten B787-10s (twenty more on order). The carrier is also expecting eight B787-8s and seventeen B777-9s in terms of its passenger fleet.

Airbus Updates No.4341

A321N Jetblue 640US low-cost carriers defer Airbuses

Over the last few weeks, three major US low-cost carriers have announced that they are deferring deliveries of new Airbus A320neo-family aircraft. They are doing this to reduce capital expenditure in the coming years, the expectation of lower passenger demand, as well as issues with the new engines.

On 1 July 2024, Spirit Airlines was the first to announce that they have deferred all new Airbuses it had planned to take delivery of between July 2025 and December 2026 until 2030 and 2031. How many aircraft are exactly involved hasn't been communicated. The airline currently has open orders for 23 A320neos and 30 A321neos.

JetBlue announced on 30 July 2024 that it has agreed with Airbus to defer 44 A321neos to 2030 onwards. The airline will not take delivery of any new Airbus between 2026 and 2029. JetBlue has open orders with Airbus for 49 A321neos. The delivery of new A220-300s will continue, of which they still have 66 on order.

The last airline to announce a deferral is Frontier Airlines, which did so on 8 August 2024. In total, the airline is deferring 54 A320neos and A321neos which it planned to take delivery of between 2025 and 2028. Instead, they now plan to take them on from 2029 onwards. Next to the deferral, Frontier Airlines also said it has decided to swap orders for eighteen A321XLRs into regular A320neos. The low-cost carrier currently has open orders with Airbus for 49 A320neos and 147 A321neos.
