Germany's Condor takes first A320neo

Condor (DE, Frankfurt International) took delivery of its first A320-200N on April 24, 2024, kick starting the renewal of its narrowbody fleet.

D-ANCZ (msn 12031) was ferried directly from Toulouse Blagnac to Frankfurt International. The aircraft is on lease from Avolon and configured for up to 180 passengers in a single-class layout. Condor plans to induct the aircraft into revenue service on May 15, with the first flight to Palma de Mallorca.

The German leisure specialist plans to add 41 new-generation narrowbodies, comprising thirteen A320-200Ns and twenty-eight A321-200Ns. The first A321neo is scheduled for delivery in June. Only two units of each type are on direct orders from Airbus, with the remainder due from various lessors. The ch-aviation fleets module shows that at least two A320neo and four A321neo will come from BOC Aviation, and at least seventeen A321neo from Air Lease Corporation. The deliveries of the new-generation narrowbodies are set to conclude by 2029.

The A320/1neo will replace Condor's current narrowbody fleet, which includes twelve A320-200s, thirteen A321-200s, and nine B757-300s.

Condor recently retired its last B767-300ERs and completed the renewal of its widebody fleet, which currently comprises fifteen A330-900s. It has eight more due, including four from Airbus and four from lessors (including two from AerCap). The carrier's fleet renewal was sparked by the acquisition by Attestor Capital in 2021.

France’s CMA CGM Air Cargo doubles A350F order

CMA CGM Air Cargo (2C, Paris CDG) has ordered four additional A350Fs, increasing its total tally to eight of the type to be delivered in 2026 and 2027, and it will take possession of three B777-200Fs within the next 12 months.

The eight Airbus A350 freighters will enable the company to extend its reach and “operate a global network, meeting the global logistics needs of air freight customers,” it said in a statement. All eight airframes will be owned by parent entity CMA CGM, the company confirmed ch-aviation.

In addition, CMA CGM Air Cargo will take delivery of three new fully-owned B777-200Fs, with the first scheduled for delivery in June, the second in the fourth quarter of 2024, and the third in the first quarter of 2025. The first two - one of which will be operated by Atlas Air (5Y, New York JFK) - will be deployed between Europe and Asia and the United States, serving airports in Hong Kong InternationalSeoul IncheonChicago O'Hare, and mainland China. CMA CGM did not disclose where it would deploy its third B777-200F.

ch-aviation has asked CMA CGM and Atlas Air for added comment.

In 2022, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings operated a similar agreement with CMA CGM rival MSC Air Cargo, to operate four B777-200Fs.

Currently, the CMA CGM Air Cargo fleet consists of B777-200Fs and three A330-200Fs, the ch-aviation fleets module shows. The first type operate flights between Europe and Asia with five flights per week to Hong Kong International and four to Shanghai Pudong. Two of the three A330Fs are chartered for Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul Airport) and the third operates between Paris CDGMumbai International, and Guangzhou 3x weekly.

Aegean Airlines to add "premium" A321neo for medium-haul

Aegean Airlines (A3, Athens) has announced that four of its outstanding A321-200NX aircraft will be delivered in a new premium configuration for medium-haul routes, to be added to the fleet in 2026 and 2027.

The twinjets will be configured for less than 180 passengers, compared to 220 all-economy seats on Aegean's current A321neo, allowing for them to feature lie-flat business class seats for the first time in the carrier's history. The exact configuration will be unveiled by mid-2024. By equipping the aircraft with additional fuel tanks, the airline will extend the range to up to 7.5 hours of flight time, allowing it to target "non-EU markets".

Aegean Airlines said that the aircraft would be used on routes to the Middle East, both those currently served (RiyadhJeddah InternationalDubai International) and new (such as Bahrain InternationalDoha Hamad International, or Muscat), Africa (for example, Addis Ababa InternationalLagos, or Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta) and Asia (potentially Delhi InternationalMumbai International, or Almaty International). The carrier conceded that as those destinations are served by widebody aircraft by many competitors, its standard European configuration would not be competitive.

"We are making a significant investment in the extended range and a totally new level of comfort for an initial four-aircraft sub-fleet to give our crews the right tool to best represent Aegean values for these longer flight markets," CEO Dimitris Gerogiannis said.

The carrier emphasised that the four extended-range aircraft will not be a new commitment but will come from the existing orderbook. Aegean has a total commitment for twenty-one A320-200neo and twenty-nine A321neo, including both direct orders from Airbus and contracts with lessors, of which it has so far taken sixteen and twelve units, respectively. Its fleet also includes twenty-eight A320-200s and five A321-200s. Aegean Airlines has been adamant that it will not enter the widebody market.

United secures additional Airbus A321neos

United Airlines has announced on 16 April 2024 that it has secured leases for additional Airbus A321neos. In January 2024, Scramble reported that the airline was in discussion with Airbus for more A321neos. It now seems, however, that the airline has settled to fill its capacity gaps with leased aircraft.

In total United is leasing 35 A321neos that will be delivered from 2026. The new Airbuses will fill the void that is created by the late certification and delivery of its Boeing B737-10s it has on order. Which lessors are involved is currently unclear.

With these lease-deals, United is bringing its total commitment to the A321neo to 215. So far, it has taken delivery of seven of those.

Brazil’s Azul ends Airbus A350 operations

Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras (AD, São Paulo Viracopos) has ferried its last A350-900 out of Brazil, putting an end to the type's brief stint at the carrier, ch-aviation research has revealed.

PR-AOY (msn 168) flew from São Paulo Viracopos to Fort Lauderdale International on Tuesday, April 9 under flight number AD9840, which is only used for ferry operations and was last deployed when the airline retired its other A350, PR-AOW (now HS-THY, msn 124), flying it to San Bernardino, according to Flightradar24 ADS-B data.

The Brazilian carrier operated the A350-900 type between September 2022 and January 2024. The original plan was for the model to be part of its fleet renewal plan and replace its A330-200s, chief executive John Rodgerson said in September 2022.

However, one year later, Azul moved away from the A350 and instead focused on the A330-900N, placing an order for four aircraft of the type in June 2023. CFO Alexandre Malfitani said at the time that with the A330neo operating and on order, “we will standardise our international fleet.”

ch-aviation has reached out to Azul for comment.

PR-AOY is owned and managed by AerCap, the ch-aviation fleets module shows. HS-THY, owned by the same lessor, is under maintenance at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and will enter into service for Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi).

Azul’s fleet now comprises 166 aircraft: forty-nine A320-200Ns, six A321-200NX(LR)s, four A330-200s, five A330-900Ns (with nine more coming), thirty-seven ATR72-600s, two B737-400(F)s, forty-three E195s, and twenty E195-E2s. Regional subsidiary Azul Conecta (2F, Jundiaí) operates a fleet of twenty-four Cessna Aircraft Company Grand Caravan turboprops.
