Qantas to wet-lease two A330s from 3Q23

Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith) will lease two A330-300s from Finnair (AY, Helsinki Vantaa) for six years to operate on the Sydney - Singapore Changi, and Sydney - Bangkok Suvarnabhumi sectors. The flights will be an extension of existing Finnair services between Helsinki and the two Southeast Asian cities. Finnair will wet-lease the aircraft to Qantas for the first two-and-a-half years of the lease, and switch to a dry-lease for the remaining time.

The Finnair aircraft will begin flying into Sydney in late October 2023, freeing up Qantas planes and crew to fly elsewhere. ch-aviation research reveals that the first Finnair A330 will begin operating six weekly roundtrips between Sydney and Singapore for Qantas from October 30. The Australian airline presently operates a mixture of A330-300, A330-200, and A380-800 types on that city pair. Daily Finnair-operated A330 roundtrip flights will start operating for Qantas between Bangkok and Sydney from March 31, 2024. Qantas presently flies a daily A330-330 roundtrip service on this city pair. While the Finnair service will replace the Qantas-operated Bangkok flight, Qantas will keep operating its own aircraft on some services on the Sydney - Singapore sector, where the airline typically offers several roundtrips a day, including its flagship QF1/2 services. Qantas adds that the Finnair-operated services in and out of Sydney will include Qantas’s usual inflight catering, amenities, IFE, and baggage allowances.

While outgoing Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce says the deal, especially when it shifts to an operating lease, will create jobs and opportunities within the group, the Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) has criticised the move, with president Tony Lucas calling it "shocking and bitterly disappointing."

"The decision to wet-lease illustrates the failures of the fleet planning processes of the last five years, and certainly recent decisions made during the pandemic recovery," he said. Joyce said the deal was about generating more capacity at Qantas, where a shortage of aircraft has hindered its ability to fully rollout its pre-pandemic network. "These are aircraft that are as rare as hens’ teeth," he said. "We think it’s a win-win.” Joyce says the international network is back to 84% of its pre-pandemic levels and will hit 100% by March. This is aided by the return of more A380-800s from storage (there are currently seven in service and three out for maintenance reasons) and the delivery of the last three B787-9s, taking the airline's B787 fleet to 14.

Meanwhile, the Finnair leases and additional aircraft are facilitating a significant lift in frequencies on ten international routes, as well as the resumption of the Sydney - Shanghai Pudong route, and launch of Brisbane International - Wellington, and Brisbane - Honiara routes on October 29. Qantas will use its own A330-300s on the Shanghai run, and E190s wet-leased from Alliance Airlines (QQ, Brisbane International) on the new Southwest Pacific services.

SmartLynx Airlines adds first A321-200(P2F)

SmartLynx Airlines (6Y, Riga) has taken delivery of its first A321-200(P2F), becoming the second SmartLynx AOC to employ the type.

YL-LDP (msn 1241), a 23-year-old jet owned by Aero Capital Solutions and formerly run in passenger configuration by Finnair (AY, Helsinki Vantaa), was redelivered from Guangzhou via Kolkata and Burgas to Kaunas on March 30-April 1, 2023. It then underwent maintenance at Kaunas and Riga airport, before being re-inducted into the carrier's fleet in mid-May 2023. It was ferried from Riga to Leipzig/Halle on May 19, 2023, but has yet to begin commercial operations, ADS-B data shows.

"As we reintroduce the A321-200 freighter to the world, we are confident that it is poised to lead the future of cargo operations. To start, its exceptional fuel efficiency makes it the most sustainable choice in the cargo market today. Direct operational costs for A321F are up to 30% lower compared to the classic B757-200 and B737 freighters, making it the most cost-effective option for our clients. In addition, due to the popularity of the A320 family, we are committed to providing efficient and fast maintenance for our fleet," CEO Zygimantas Surintas said.

Sister carrier SmartLynx Airlines Malta (LYX, Malta International) already operates two A321-200(P2F)s and four A321-200(PCF)s, the ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows, with plans to operate at least 13 converted freighters by the end of 2023 and lease another four in 2024.

The ACMI/charter specialists passenger fleet comprises twenty-nine A320-200s, eight A321-200s, six A330-300s, and four B737-8s across its AOCs in Latvia, Estonia, and Malta.

Philippine Airlines selects A350-1000

On 10 May 2023, Airbus announced that Philippine Airlines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Airbus A350-1000. In total the airline is planning to order nine A350-1000s, which the airline plans to operate, initially, from Manila to destinations in Canada and the United States. Deliveries are expected to start in 2025 and completed in 2027 and will be used to replace the airline's B777-300ERs.

The airline already operates two A350-900s. Originally, the airline had six A350-900s but during the pandemic it decided to return four of these to their lessors, and have now leased them to Lufthansa. Next to the A350s, the airline's fleet consists of thirteen A320s, 21 A321s, eight A321neos, ten A330-300s, nine B777-300ERs, and eleven DHC-8-400s.

Solomon Airlines in talks for second A320

Solomons - Solomon Airlines (IE, Honiara) is looking to secure a second A320-200 to capitalise on demand for travel to Honiara for the 17th Pacific Games later this year. Solomon Airlines CEO Gus Kraus told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Commission that a letter of intent (LOI) had been signed with the lessor and lease negotiations were expected to commence shortly.

If the lease proceeds, it will provide the state-owned carrier with its second jet aircraft and offer some much needed capacity when the other aircraft goes out of service. Kraus did not provide specific information on the incoming aircraft, other than saying it was former Jetstar Airways (JQ, Melbourne Tullamarine) Airbus stock, and that he hoped to have it by July or August.

“The purchase will see us having a new modern airplane that is under 10 years old," he said. "That’s the newest airplane we’ve got." Solomon Airlines currently operates a fleet of five aircraft, including one 18.04 year-old A320-200, one 31.79 year-old DHC-8-100, and three DHC-6-300s variously aged 47.08 years, 47.49 years, and 53.32 years old.

Kraus says aside from providing extra capacity over the Pacific Games period, the additional jet would be used on charters, including seasonal work charters, and flights to Port Moresby and Kiribati. "There's plenty of work ahead," he said. "In the longer term, we want to talk with Tonga and Samoa if they have a need for airline services as they don’t have national airlines."

According to ch-aviation fleets advanced data, Jetstar has exited three A320-200s since the start of 2022, with the two most recent transferring to Network Aviation (NWK, Perth International), a closed charter specialist airline also owned by Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingsford Smith). However, ch-aviation has confirmed that the aircraft under negotiation is 2-HVFN (msn 5566). Jetstar returned the plane, then registered as VH-VFN, to BOC Aviation in October 2022. The aircraft is 10.16 years old and is currently at Singapore Seletar for maintenance. Representatives from Solomon Airlines plan to inspect the aircraft next week.

Meanwhile, Kraus also said having its sole A320-200, H4-SIB (msn 2445), out of service multiple times this year had proven a costly exercise for the small state-owned airline. He said the aircraft was out of service for ten days in January, three days in March, and fourteen days in late April/early May. The beneficiary was Nauru Airlines (ON, Nauru) which billed Solomon Airlines SBD4.5 million Solomon Islands dollars (USD540,000) for charter flights.

"All revenues made from selling tickets, we don’t keep because we must pay it out for the chartered flights," said Kraus. "This affects us in two ways; us paying another operator to provide our services, and paying the Airbus lease payments."

He confirmed the most recent out-of-service incident was due to a fuel contamination issue in the wing fuel tanks, which he says are checked every time the aircraft lands. "The recent contamination was found in the wing tanks. This saw our maintenance controller in Brisbane making the decision for us to ground the plane."

Kraus also said that H4-SIB would be out of service for two weeks from May 22 for scheduled maintenance at Melbourne Tullamarine. During this time, Nauru Airlines will operate many of Solomon Airlines' scheduled A320 flights but Kraus said he was also looking for another short term wet-lessor to cover what Nauru Airlines could not.

Kuwait's Jazeera Airways to lease two A321s

The board of Jazeera Airways (J9, Kuwait) has approved leasing two A320-200s and two A321-200s at a board meeting held in Kuwait on May 2, 2023. The aircraft will provide the Kuwaiti budget carrier with capacity ahead while awaiting deliveries of A320neo family aircraft from Airbus.

According to a filing with the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE), the transaction is expected to have a positive impact on the carrier's revenues and operations "but the immediate impact cannot be quantified." Jazeera Airways presently operates a fleet of nine A320-200s and eleven A320-200Ns, 16 of which are leased. In notes accompanying a May 3 earnings call, the airline said it expects to grow its fleet to 24 by the end of the year. Jazeera Airways has an outstanding order with Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) for twenty A320-200Ns and eight A321-200Ns.

In March, ch-aviation reported that Jazeera Airways was wet-leasing an A320-200 from Dan Air (JOC, Bucharest Baneasa) to provide a short-term capacity top up over the Ramadan, Eid, and Umrah Pilgrimage peaks ahead of additional aircraft arriving in mid-2023.

Jazeera Airways also reported this week that 2023 is shaping up as a busier year than 2022 and that yields have "completely normalised and expected to continue within normal parameters." The airline expects a busy summer season and says it will give greater attention to connecting flights focusing on Umrah, commuting, students and business travel. Jazeera Airways also recently announced that it will resume flights to Prague Václav Havel and Sarajevo over the upcoming summer.

Biman Bangladesh secures funding for Airbus order

Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG, Dhaka) has secured funding to purchase ten Airbus aircraft after signing a joint communique with the United Kingdom that will allow it to access funds via the UK Export Finance scheme. The communique was signed in London on May 6 just days after the airline said it wanted to buy the planes.

“This deal demonstrates the UK's commitment to strengthening Bangladesh’s aviation industry, in turn helping to create jobs in both countries,” said Lord Dominic Johnson of Lainston CBE, the UK's minister of state in the Department for Business and Trade.

Salman F Rahman, adviser to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, signed on behalf of Bangladesh. The deal coincides with the prime minister's visit to the UK. The UK Export Finance scheme gives Bangladesh access to long term credit on easy deals, and follows active lobbying by Airbus to lock in an order, including sending demonstration aircraft to Dhaka.

The precise nature of the aircraft order remains unclear, but officials from Bangladesh's Ministry of Civil Aviation have been briefing local media on a May 3 Biman Bangladesh board meeting and the decision to buy eight passenger and two freight aircraft, with the first two planes expected in 2026.

"The government plans to revive and regain the international aviation market following the Prime Minister's directives on turning the country into an aviation hub in the subcontinent. We have taken a policy decision to purchase 10 new state-of-the-art aircraft for Biman,” said Mahbub Ali, the State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism.

“The decision to launch several new routes, including Japan and the United States, has already been taken. The procurement of the Airbus fleet is part of our plans for the region,” said Shafiul Azim, Biman Bangladesh's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Unnamed ministry officials are quoted saying Airbus was offering aircraft at around half their list prices. The prospective order is believed to involved A350s, including two A350Fs. However, Biman's board is yet to send technical information to the government, including details of the acquisition process and how they will pay for the planes. ch-aviation has contacted Biman Bangladesh Airlines for further information.

After bringing the A350F to Dhaka in March, Airbus reportedly put several proposals in front of Biman Bangladesh and the government at the Bangladesh Aviation Summit held in the same month. According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, Biman Bangladesh's current fleet of 21 aircraft comprises six B737-800s, four B777-300(ER)s, four B787-8s, two B787-9s, and five DHC-8-Q400s. It last operated Airbus aircraft in 2016, when it phased out the final of six A310-300s.

Meanwhile, local and foreign airlines serving Bangladesh will now have to start charging Bangladeshi's BDT taka denominated fares rather than US dollar, according to a circular from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. The decision, which comes into effect on July 1, is primarily designed to drive down ticket prices for consumers but will also reduce foreign exchange transaction fees for airlines.
