Airbus Seeks Compensation For Czech Airlines Unpaid A220 & A321XLR Orders

Czech Airlines (CSA), the flag carrier of the Czech Republic that is in bankruptcy proceedings, has a new creditor on its insolvency register: Airbus. Airbus wants almost CZK 17 billion ($815 million) for four A220-300 and three A321XLR aircraft that Czech Airlines ordered in 2019.

Airbus is seeking financial compensation of CZK 17 billion

The flag carrier of the Czech Republic, Czech Airlines (CSA), could soon be facing a financial burden that it cannot possibly overcome.

Airbus is seeking as much as CZK 17 billion ($815 million) from the airline as part of the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. The insolvency administrator, Michael Šefčík, is now assessing this claim, along with over 5,000 other ones.

The $815 million claim is for the unpaid order of seven aircraft that CSA made in 2019, but never ended up paying for. The seven aircraft are four A220-300s and three A321XLRs.

The A220s should already have arrived at the end of 2020, but the ongoing pandemic came as such a severe blow to CSA that the airline declared bankruptcy last year.

The Smartwings Group, the owner of Czech Airlines, has not received financial assistance from the Czech government, unlike the flag carriers of other countries worldwide.

Czech Airlines also had four A220s on order. Photo: Airbus

What is Airbus claiming for?

In documents supplied as part of the bankruptcy proceedings for review by the insolvency administrator, and as seen by E15, Airbus is claiming CZK 8.5 billion ($407 million) of unconditional receivables from Czech Airlines.

This is exactly half of the total amount of $815 million that Airbus is claiming for. The other half is contingent receivables, so funds that Airbus wants Czech Airlines to pay if it withdraws from the purchase agreements made in 2019. The amount includes interest payments and arrears fees.

Given that it is certain that Czech Airlines will not be honoring the original purchase agreements since it has no financial means to do so, Airbus is really claiming for $815 million. This amount vastly outstrips the total value of CSA’s assets.

Czech Airlines already had a CZK 1.8 billion ($85 million) debt when it was placed in bankruptcy proceedings. If Airbus’ claim is approved, even partially, then Czech Airlines is almost certainly not going to succeed in its attempt to reorganize itself, and will definitely be shut down.

What order did CSA place in 2019 with Airbus?

In October 2019, when it was still a profitable airline, Czech Airlines ordered four Airbus A220-300 aircraft and simultaneously converted its order for three A320neo aircraft to three A321XLRs.

Petr Kudela, the Chairman of the Board of Czech Airlines, commented on the order at the time by saying:

“The A220 and A321XLR fit well with our long-term business strategy in terms of network expansion. These aircraft will definitely give Czech Airlines a competitive advantage, and will increase the capacity of our regular flights.”

But these seven aircraft never arrived. Czech Airlines, one of the world’s oldest airlines, may be destined for history books without ever having received them.

Vistara Takes Its First Owned Airbus A320neo

Vistara has taken delivery of its first owned Airbus A320neo this week. The aircraft, registered VT-TQE, arrived in Delhi from Toulouse on Saturday morning, increasing the fleet size to 46. The latest addition takes Vistara’s owned fleet to three aircraft.

New addition

Similar to many Indian carriers, a vast majority of Vistara’s fleet is leased rather than owned outright. This helps keep capital costs low and offers the chance to quickly grow the fleet size. However, nearly every airline has at least a handful of aircraft it owns.

On Saturday, Vistara took delivery of its first-ever owned Airbus A320neo. VT-TQE features CFM LEAP-1A engines and is a part of the carrier’s order for 50 Airbus jets. The aircraft flew from Toulouse, France, on Friday afternoon and arrived in New Delhi at 04:00 AM local time, making the journey without a stop.

Leasing

According to ch-aviation, the three aircraft currently owned by Vistara include one Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, one 737-800, and the newest A320neo. So which lessors have been supplying Vistara its remaining aircraft?

Vistara’s biggest lessor is BOC Aviation, which has leased the carrier 14 aircraft, 11 A320neos and three 737s. In second place is GECAS, which currently leases out eight A320neos and previously had given 737s as well. Right behind the pair is Avolon, which rents out another seven A320s.

The carrier’s A321neos, and one A320neo, both come from Air Lease Corporation. In addition to these four, Vistara takes aircraft from six other lessors, including Oaktree Capital and Global Knafaim Leasing, ensuring a diversified base of suppliers for the future.

Buying or leasing?

Airlines worldwide face the dilemma of purchasing their aircraft outright or making monthly payments to a lessor instead. However, startup and budget airlines almost exclusively sign lucrative lease agreements to rapidly grow their fleet and keep the average age low.

Indian carriers like IndiGo and SpiceJet have both acquired scores of planes almost solely through leasing. This has kept costs down and operations growing, both critical factors for the challenging market. Vistara seems to have taken a similar path, opting to keep its fleet young and capital expenditure low.

Swiss takes delivery of final A220

Swiss has taken delivery of its final of 30 A220s on 24 May. The aircraft, A220-300 HB-JCU (55110), arrived at Zürich after a non-stop flight from the Airbus-plant at Mirabel. It's due to fly its first commercial flights on 29 May.

The Lufthansa Group ordered 30 CS100s for Swiss back in 2009 when the C-Series programme was launched by Bombardier. The company also took options on another 30 aircraft. In 2015, the order was amended into an order for twenty CS100s and ten CS300s. A year later, Swiss took delivery of its first CS100 and became the launch operator for the C-Series on 15 July 2016. In the same year, the airline amended its order to eight CS100s and 21 CS300s, which were renamed A220-100 and -300 when Airbus took over the programme in 2018.

Etihad Moves Unused A350 Out Of Storage After 2 Years

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has moved the first of its five new Airbus A350-1000s from Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (BOD) to its mega-hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). When the Gulf carrier first started taking its A350s two years ago, it immediately flew them from Toulouse to Bordeaux, where they have remained in storage.

In response to questions from New York City-based Bloomberg News about what route the plane would be put on, a spokesperson for the state-owned airline said:

“The introduction date of the aircraft’s entry into service is yet to be determined as part of the airline’s broader strategy planning.”

Etihad had lofty ambitions

Etihad had lofty ambitions from its inception and thought it could compete with Emirates and Qatar Airways by offering a similar hub and spoke model out of Abu Dhabi. The truth of the matter was that no matter how aggressively it tried, it would always have to play catch up with the competition.

While analysts could see the logic of Etihad’s ambitious plan, they were scratching their heads at the decision to partner with Jet Airways, AirBerlin, and Alitalia. All now defunct except for Alitalia, which had to be taken over by the Italian Government.

A change of tack

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic brought aviation to its knees in 2020, Etihad knew that it needed to cut back if it was ever to make a profit. The first thing it did was cancel orders with Airbus and Boeing for 42 A350-900s, two A350-1000s, and 19 Boeing 777Xs.

When speaking about a corporate shakeup and a new direction for the airline in November 2020, Gulf Business quotes Etihad Aviation Group chief executive officer Tony Douglas as saying:

“After our best-ever Q1 performance, none of us could have predicted the challenges that lay ahead in the remainder of this year.

“As a responsible business, we can no longer continue to incrementally adapt to a marketplace that we believe has changed for the foreseeable future. That is why we are taking definitive and decisive action to adjust our business and position ourselves proudly as a mid-sized carrier.

“The first stage of this is an operational model change that will see us restructure our senior leadership team and our organization to allow us to continue delivering on our mandate, ensuring long-term sustainability, and contributing to the growth and prominence of Abu Dhabi.”

Etihad A380s may not be coming back.

Once it became apparent that the pandemic was not going away anytime soon, Etihad decided to ground its fleet of ten Airbus A380s. Since then, many A380 operators have decided to retire the bigs jets early and move towards large twin-engine planes. In a sign that Etihad might be doing the same, last month Etihad removed the A380 from its website.

With codeshare partner Air Arabia Abu Dhabi up and running, it also negates the need for many of Etihad’s short-haul routes, allowing them to concentrate more on long-haul and their new bespoke charter service.

As for the A350s, the obvious choice is to put them on the old A380 routes but seeing as Etihad has not said how it plans to use them, we will have to wait and see.

Bahrain's Gulf Air pushes back Airbus deliveries

Gulf Air (GF, Bahrain Int'l) has agreed with both Airbus and Boeing to defer deliveries of unspecified aircraft originally due for handover in 2020 and 2021 by a matter of six to nine months, Chairman Zayed bin Rashid al-Zayani told the media during the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.

al-Zayani did not go into any details about the types of aircraft affected.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, Gulf Air has six A320-200Ns, six A321-200NXs, nine A321-200NX(LR)s,on firm order from the manufacturer. al-Zayani confirmed that even considering the new agreements with the manufacturers, the Bahraini flag carrier would still take six new aircraft in 2021, likely comprising three A321-200NXs and three B787-9s.

Former Chief Executive Krešimir Kučko told ch-aviation in September 2020 that the airline had decided to extend its ongoing narrowbody fleet renewal process through the end of 2026. Before COVID, it had hoped to retire all A320-200s and A321-200s by the end of 2023. It currently operates eleven and six units of these two types, respectively. Gulf Air has flexibility with its A320ceo as it owns most of the aircraft, except for three A320s and two A321s which are dry-leased.

In terms of its A320neo Family aircraft, Gulf Air has thus far taken delivery of six A320-200Ns and two A321-200NXs, all of which are dry-leased.

The carrier has already completed the retirement of its previous generation widebodies, having phased out the last A330-200 in late 2019.

Florida's GLOBALX signs for five A321(P2F)s

GLOBALX (GXA, Miami Int'l) has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with ST Engineering and its in-house leasing arm Aviation Asset Management to lease five incremental converted A321-200(P2F)s.

The Singapore-based maintenance provider said it would acquire the A321-200s for conversion either on its own or through its joint venture firms. It did not reveal the identity of the aircraft. The first of the quintet is set to enter conversion in April 2022 and deliver to GLOBALX in the fourth quarter of the year. The other four units will be converted and delivered "progressively".

The Floridan start-up, which is currently undergoing certification, signed an LOI with Vallair for ten A321-200(P2F)s in October 2020, of which five were confirmed for conversion by ST Engineering. GLOBALX Chairman Ed Wegel confirmed to ch-aviation that the five newly ordered aircraft are on top of the ten previously signed, increasing the start-up's freighter fleet to fifteen A321-200(P2F)s.

In April 2021, GLOBALX secured a USD10 million investment from Ascent Global Logistics, which it said would partially fund its expansion into the freighter market later in 2021.

GLOBALX plans to operate a two-pronged business model based on the passenger and cargo niches. In terms of its passenger operations, GLOBALX aims to provide charter capacity for major airlines, tour operators, professional and collegiate sports teams, casinos, and corporate groups, as well as direct-to-consumer charters under its Part 380 regulations out of its bases at Miami Int'l and Atlantic City.

The carrier has so far taken delivery of one A320-200 and one A321-200.
