Airbus Updates No.2274

Virgin delays A340 retirement after Norwegian incident

Virgin Atlantic (VS, London Heathrow) has pushed back towards the end of the year the retirement of its A340-600 fleet because an incident on a Norwegian B787-8 last month has altered the availability of Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.
Planned A340 services between London Heathrow and both Delhi Int'l and New York JFK have been extended from October 26 until December 8, according to Routes Online.
"We're keeping them for about two months longer", Virgin Atlantic's executive vice president for operations, Philip Maher, told FlightGlobal.
A "minor issue" with the supply of Rolls-Royce engines was the reason for the decision, Maher explained.
On August 10, a Norwegian B787-8 suffered a serious engine failure after taking off from Rome Fiumicino, sending molten shards of metal raining down on the southern suburbs of Rome, damaging buildings and cars. About four kilograms of debris from the aircraft's left-hand engine was recovered from the ground, according to The Times newspaper.
Rolls-Royce admitted on September 20 that the blowout had accelerated its Trent 1000 engine repair plan begun in 2018. This will result in dozens of Dreamliners operated by, for example, Virgin Atlantic, Norwegian, and British Airways being grounded in the coming months.
The incident "caused a number of engines to come out of the pool of engines to support Norwegian," Maher said, while "engines coming back from overhaul for us weren't available for four to five weeks".
Virgin Atlantic currently operates 47 aircraft, according to ch-aviation fleets advanced, including seventeen B787-9s and the five A340-600s, as well as eight B747-400s, three A350-1000s (so far delivered out of an order for twelve due through to 2021), four A330-200s, and ten A330-300s.

Air Tahiti Nui ends A340 operations

Air Tahiti Nui (TN, Papeete) has ended Airbus operations following the retirement of its last two remaining A340-300s on Tuesday, September 24.
According to the French Polynesian carrier, F-OJGF (msn 385) was retired from commercial service on September 1 and ferried from Papeete to Marana on September 25. For its part, F-OSEA (msn 438) conducted its last revenue flight on September 24 before being ferried to Marana the day after. Air Tahiti Nui had operated a total of five A340-300s.
As it now stands, Air Tahiti Nui's fleet is now an all-Boeing affair consisting of four B787-9s of which two are leased from Air Lease Corporation while the remaining two are owned. The jets are used to serve Auckland Int'l, Los Angeles Int'l, Paris CDG (via Los Angeles), and Tokyo Narita.

Airbus Updates No.2270

The month in review: August 2019

The single-aisle A320 Family logged 16 orders in August for its NEO versions, while 42 jetliners were delivered to 29 customers from the single-aisle A220 and A320 families, as well as the A330neo and A350 XWB product lines.
An undisclosed customer ordered 15 A321XLR versions from the A320 Family, further expanding Airbus’ bookings for this longest-range single-aisle airliner. Based on the stretched-fuselage A321neo version, Airbus launched the A321XLR earlier this year to offer airlines even more range, and also create additional value for operators by bringing 30% lower fuel burn per seat than previous-generation competitor aircraft.
Also logged in August was a private customer’s booking for an Airbus Corporate Jetliner in the ACJ320neo configuration.
The month’s deliveries involved 31 single-aisle aircraft: three A220s and 28 A320 Family jetliners (composed of 19 NEO versions and nine in the CEO configurations); along with 11 wide-body aircraft (six A330s in NEO versions, and five A350 XWBs in the A350-900 and A350-1000 configurations).
Taking the January-to-August delivery activity into account, Airbus provided 66 more aircraft than during the same eight-month period in 2018.
Notable deliveries in August included the first A330neo in the A330-900 version for AirAsia X, and the initial A330-900 in the livery of Portuguese wet lease specialist Hi Fly. Also during the month, Virgin Atlantic received its initial A350-1000 version of the A350 XWB, and Airbus provided the first-ever ACJ319neo to a private customer.
Taking the latest orders and deliveries into account, Airbus’ backlog of jetliners remaining to be delivered as of 31 August stood at 7,172 aircraft. The single-aisle total was composed of 5,810 A320 Family jetliners and 428 A220s; while the wide-body tally involved 613 A350 XWBs, 270 A330s and 51 A380s.
