Singapore Airlines to order up to 50 more A350 XWBs

Third order from carrier for all-new Airbus mid-size widebody

30 May 2013 Press Release

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced that it will purchase up to 50 more A350 XWB aircraft. The agreement covers a firm order for 30 more A350-900s plus options for a further 20 aircraft. The deal allows for the airline to select either the baseline A350-900 or the larger A350-1000 when exercising the options.
The latest agreement will represent the third order from Singapore Airlines for the A350 XWB. Upon confirmation, it will see the airline’s total firm orders for the all-new aircraft increase to 70, excluding options. The aircraft will be used by the airline on both medium and long haul routes.

“The latest announcement from Singapore Airlines is another major endorsement for the A350 XWB,” said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers, Airbus. “As we move closer to first flight, demand for the A350 XWB continues to grow, especially for the larger models. Airbus is set to bring a step-change to the mid-size widebody market and we are proud to have Singapore Airlines on board in such a big way.”

The A350 XWB (Xtra Wide-Body) is an all-new mid-size long range product line comprising three versions and seating between 270 and 350 passengers in typical three-class layouts. The aircraft will bring new levels of efficiency to the mid-size market, using 25 per cent less fuel than existing aircraft in this size category and providing an equivalent reduction in CO2 emissions.

Assembly of the first A350 XWB to fly is complete, with an extensive flight test programme due to begin around mid-2013. Entry into commercial service of the first customer aircraft is scheduled for the second half of 2014.

To date Airbus has recorded 616 firm orders for the A350 XWB from 34 customers worldwide.

Oman Air orders three A330-300 aircraft

A330 success continues as the solution for long-haul growth

22 May 2013Press Release

Oman Air, the national carrier of the Sultanate of Oman, has placed an order for three A330-300s, growing its A330 Family fleet to a total of ten Airbus aircraft. The aircraft will be operated on long haul routes and can comfortably seat close to 300 passengers.

“The efficiency, reliability and passenger appeal of our in-service A330’s already make The Pillar of Oman Air’s long haul operations,” said Wayne Pearce, CEO of Oman Air. “This additional order will allow us to continue our strategy of growth with an aircraft we know to be both reliable and profitable, and in addition offering the highest levels of passenger comfort.”

“We are proud to continuously grow and develop our partnership with Oman Air through our popular A330-300 aircraft,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers “The winning combination of efficiency, reliability and comfort provided by the A330 continues to delight customers and passengers worldwide and will do so for many years to come, with our consistent investment in the aircraft family.”

Airbus aircraft share a unique cockpit and operational commonality, allowing airlines to use the same pool of pilots, cabin crews and maintenance engineers, bringing operational flexibility and resulting in significant cost savings. Airbus is the leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive family of airliners on the market, ranging in capacity from 100 to more than 500 seats.

The A330 Family, which spans 250 to 300 seats, and includes Freighter, VIP, and Military Transport/Tanker variants, has now attracted more than 1,200 orders, with around 900 aircraft flying with more than 100 operators worldwide. Ever since the original version of the A330-300 entered service, the hallmark has been its very efficient operating economics. Thanks to the introduction of numerous product improvements, it still remains the most cost-efficient and capable aircraft in its class, and the family is achieving average dispatch reliability above 99 percent.

AIRBUS CLOSE IN ON KUWAIT AIRWAYS ORDER

KUWAIT. Airbus SAS is close to sealing a purchase agreement from Kuwait Airways Co. for 25 aircraft in a deal valued at US$4.4 billion based on list price, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The state-owned airline may sign the agreement as early as this month to purchase 10 Airbus A350-900s and 15 single-aisle A320neos, with deliveries starting in 2019, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the decision hasn’t been finalized.

Airbus won 616 orders by the end of April for the A350 series, which begins service before the end of 2014 and is designed to challenge Boeing Co.’s 787 and 777 widebody models. Boeing has begun marketing a successor to its 777, the 777X, though it hasn’t yet sought board approval to build the plane.

“The A350XWB is doing extremely well in Airbus’s core twin-aisle market, the Mideast,” said Richard Aboulafia, vice president of the Teal Group, a Fairfax, Virginia based forecaster, referring to the extra wide body version of the plane.

A Kuwait Airways spokesman wasn’t immediately available to comment when contacted by Bloomberg News today. An Airbus spokeswoman said the manufacturer doesn’t comment on discussions with potential customers. Kuwait-based Al-Watan reported the plan to buy Airbus planes earlier today, without saying where it got the information.

Of the 616 A350 orders in the Airbus backlog, 414 are for the A350-900 model, 92 for the smaller A350-800 and 110 for the A350-1000.

Demand has been particularly strong in recent months, with British Airways’ parent IAG SA committing last month to the purchase of 18 A350-1000s, more than doubling the European aircraft maker’s backlog for the largest variant of the A350 in less than a year.

The A320neo, which will offer new engines on Airbus’s A320 single-aisle series, has won 2,125 firm orders from 40 customers since Airbus began offering the model in December 2011.

As part of the purchase agreement, Kuwait Airways will also lease 13 aircraft from Airbus, with the first to be received in June or July, the people said. The airline plans to take all 11 of its A300s, A310s and A320s out of service by the end of this year, one of the people said.

Kuwait Airways, which expects to pay about 850 million dinars ($3 billion) for the order, chose Airbus over an offer by Boeing Co. (BA) partly because the cost was lower, one of the people said.

Kuwait Airways’ fleet of 17 planes is mainly comprised of Airbus jet, along with two Boeing 777s. The sale of the unprofitable flag carrier was approved by parliament in January 2008. According to a draft law approved by the Cabinet last year, 35 percent of Kuwait Airways shares are to be sold in the first three years.

First Chinese assembled A320 with Sharklets goes to China Eastern

First in China to benefit from more fuel savings

17 May 2013Press Release

China’s largest operator of Airbus aircraft, China Eastern Airlines, has taken delivery of its first A320 aircraft equipped with Sharklet fuel saving wing-tip devices, becoming China’s first carrier to do so. The aircraft is also the first Sharklets equipped A320 assembled and delivered in Tianjin.

The A320, powered by IAE V2500 engines, features a comfortable two class cabin, seating 158 passengers with eight in business class and 150 in economy. The A320 will make its first commercial flight from Shanghai to Dalian on May 18.

“As the first and biggest Airbus customer in China, China Eastern and Airbus have long-term good cooperation. China Eastern is honored to be the first customer of A320 with sharklets in China. In the near future, China Eastern will further expand our sharklet equipped A320 family fleet”, said Shu Mingjiang, Vice President Flight Operations, China Eastern.

We are delighted that China Eastern Airlines has taken delivery of its first Sharklet equipped A320. It is a mark of our close ties that the biggest Airbus fleet operator in China is also the first Chinese carrier to benefit from up to four per cent reduction in fuel costs”, said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers.

Sharklets are made from light-weight composites and are 2.4 meters tall. They are an option on new-build A320 Family aircraft and standard on all members of the new A320neo family. They offer operators up to four per cent fuel burn reduction on longer range sectors and provide the flexibility of either adding an additional 100 nautical miles range or increased payload capability of up to 450 kilograms.

China Eastern is one of the largest airlines in China and is the first Chinese airline operating Airbus aircraft in 1985. Now it operates an Airbus fleet of over 230 aircraft including A300s, A319s, A320s, A321s, A330s and A340s.

Airbus Tianjin Delivery Centre has delivered 126 aircraft since June 2009 and it plans to deliver 46 aircraft in total in 2013.

The A320 Family is the world’s best-selling and most modern single aisle aircraft Family. To date, over 9,400 aircraft have been ordered and over 5,500 delivered to more than 385 customers and operators worldwide. With proven reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single-aisle aircraft.

First A350 XWB painting completed in Toulouse

13 May 2013Press Release

Painting of the first A350 XWB “MSN001” was today fully completed as it emerged in its Airbus livery out from the paintshop in Toulouse. This latest milestone shows that MSN001 is progressing well on its route to first flight.

The aircraft painting was achieved in less than seven days and follows the recent completion of MSN001’s flight-test-instrumentation (FTI) verification. Last month the aircraft underwent its engines installation, and passed a subsequent intensive phase of ground vibration tests. MSN001 will soon start the final tests before its maiden flight this summer.

Airbus Updates No.999

The month in review: April 2013

Orders & deliveries

   Airbus         April 2013
Total orders      12805
   Total deliveries    7832
In operation    7264

April marked numerous milestones in Airbus’ order and delivery activities, bringing it to a new industry record backlog of 4,973 aircraft that corresponds to more than seven years of production for its jetliner product line.

New bookings for 83 aircraft were logged during the month – led by the largest order ever from Turkish Airlines: composed of 57 new engine option (neo) versions of the Airbus single-aisle A320 Family (53 in the A321neo configuration, and four of the A320neo variant), along with 25 A321ceo (current engine option) aircraft.

With this transaction, Turkish Airlines becomes the latest customer for new engine option members of Airbus’ best-selling A320 Family, bringing total neo orders to 2,125 aircraft from 40 customers.

Completing the activity in April was an ACJ319 corporate jet order from an unnamed private customer. The month’s new business increased total net orders booked by Airbus during the first four months of 2013 to 493 aircraft.

Airbus provided 45 A320 Family aircraft and 13 A330s in April to international customers. One of the A330s was an A330-200F freighter delivered to aircraft leasing company BOC Aviation for operation by Qatar Airways.

Nearly 20 per cent of the jetliners provided in April were for China’s dynamic airline market, consisting of six A321s, four A320s, one A319 and an A330.

Also notable was the fact that a large proportion of April’s overall A320 Family deliveries were made for low-cost carriers worldwide, demonstrating the single-aisle product line’s continued popularity with this demanding airline sector. Such customers adding A320 Family aircraft to their fleets during the month included Europe’s Vueling, easyJet and Wizz Air; IndiGo and GoAir in India; along with Peach Aviation and Jetstar in Japan.

Year-to-date deliveries from January through April totalled 202 aircraft, representing a 10 per cent rate increase from the same period in 2012.
