Gurugram, India - Indian low-cost carrier SpiceJet added two Airbus A320 aircraft to its fleet. The planes are wet-leased from Bulgarian leisure operator BH Air.
With the latest induction, the SpiceJet fleet now stands at 121 aircraft. These are the first Airbus planes to join the all-Boeing airline's fleet.
Despite facing an unprecedented crisis following the grounding of the 737 MAX in March last year, SpiceJet grew almost 60% in 2019. The Indian operator has taken delivery of more than 40 planes since April 2019.
Like all other 737 MAX operators around the world, SpiceJet has been suffering from revenue losses due to the prolonged worldwide grounding of the type. SpiceJet currently has 13 Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets in its fleet. There are 192 737 MAX 8s in the airline's order book waiting to be delivered.
SpiceJet is looking at options beyond 737 MAX 8 to continue to grow its route network.
Besides the newly added two Airbus A320s, the Indian budget carrier currently operates a fleet of 82 Boeing 737s and Bombardier Q400s. The airline has a fleet of 82 Boeing 737 jets and 32 Bombardier Q-400s.
