Airbus Updates No.1636

Airbus delivers first A350 XWB for Delta Air Lines

Delta to be first U.S. airline to fly the most technologically advanced widebody
Delta Air Lines has taken delivery of its first A350-900, and will be the first U.S. airline to operate the newest member of Airbus’ leading widebody family. The A350 XWB will bring unrivalled eco-efficiency and a superior passenger experience to primarily transpacific routes starting in October.
Today’s delivery is the first of five A350-900s scheduled for delivery to Delta in 2017. The aircraft features 32 seats in the Delta One cabin, 48 seats in Delta Premium Select and 226 seats in the Main Cabin.
The A350 XWB was the first aircraft to incorporate the innovative passenger experience elements collectively known as Airspace by Airbus. Delta’s customers will enjoy the quietest twin-aisle cabin, with more personal space and the largest overhead bins in the business. More fresh air, LED ambient lighting, and optimization of cabin pressure, temperature and humidity all combine for absolute passenger wellbeing.
The A350 XWB also boasts the latest aerodynamic design, carbon fiber fuselage and wings, and the fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines. This combination of technologies translates into unequaled operational efficiency, with a 25 percent reduction in fuel burn and emissions, and significantly lower maintenance costs.

A350 XWB
Orders as of 30 June 201717,285

Airbus marked a busy June with 138 aircraft ordered from its A320 and A330 families by airlines and leasing companies – including high-profile announcements made at the Paris Air Show – while delivering 64 jetliners during the month in the A320, A330 and A350 XWB product range.
Leading the new business in June was the booking for 100 A320neo (New Engine Option) Family aircraft by GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) – the U.S. and Irish commercial leasing and financing arm of General Electric. This transaction brings GECAS’ total jetliners ordered from Airbus to almost 600 – of which 220 are from the A320neo Family.
Another lessor placing an order last month was U.S.-based Air Lease Corporation (ALC), acquiring 12 A321neo jetliners. The Los Angeles-headquartered company’s incremental order raises its overall number of aircraft received from Airbus or on order to 279 – of which 209 are from the single-aisle A320 Family, and the remaining 70 being widebodies.
In other activity from the U.S. market, Delta Air Lines placed an order for 10 additional A320 Family aircraft – selecting the longest-fuselage A321ceo (Current Engine Option) configuration for this latest booking with Airbus.
Completing the month’s single-aisle transactions were orders by Cebu Air of the Philippines for seven A321ceo versions, Yemenia-Yemen Airways’ booking for four A320neo aircraft, and three A320ceo jetliners for Vueling of Spain.
In the widebody category, Hi Fly placed its first direct firm order with Airbus – acquiring two A330-200s. The Portuguese airline specialist in wet leasing of widebody aircraft worldwide already operates an all-Airbus fleet of 14 aircraft.
Taking June’s conversions and cancellations into account, Airbus’ net orders for the first six months of 2017 totalled 203 jetliners.
Deliveries in June were composed of 50 A320 Family aircraft (including 11 A320neo/A321neo versions), six A330-200/A330-300s, and eight A350-900s. These 64 aircraft were received by 43 customers.
Among the month’s delivery highlights were the first A321neo deliveries to three operators: WOW air, the Icelandic low-fare carrier; Swedish charter airline Novair; and SriLankan Airlines. Also in June, Airbus provided easyJet’s first A320neo aircraft, which became the 300th A320 Family jetliner to join this airline’s fleet (and was one of five deliveries made to easyJet during the month).
Based on this latest orders and deliveries activity, Airbus’ overall backlog of jetliners to be delivered stood at 6,771 as of June 30, representing approximately nine years of production at current rates.

Incident: Canada A320 at San Francisco on Jul 7th 2017, lined up with taxiway for landing
By Simon Hradecky, created Tuesday, Jul 11th 2017 13:32Z, last updated Tuesday, Jul 11th 2017 20:23Z
An Air Canada Airbus A320-200, registration C-FKCK performing flight AC-759 from Toronto,ON (Canada) to San Francisco,CA (USA) with 140 people on board, was on final approach to runway 28R in night conditions being cleared to land, when a short time after reading back the landing clearance the crew queried tower to confirm they were cleared to land advising they were seeing lights on the runway, tower advised the runway was clear and they were cleared to land indeed. Another voice chimed in calling they were lined up with the taxiway, tower immediately instructed AC-759 to go around as result commenting it looked like they were lined up for taxiway C. The aircraft went around from about 400 feet MSL. Other flight crew taxiing their aircraft on taxiway C commented the A320 was flying straight over them. The A320 positioned for another approach and landed safely about 15 minutes later.

The FAA is investigating the occurrence rated a serious incident. There were four aircraft on taxiway C, which runs parallel to runway 28R to the right of the runway.

On Jul 11th 2017 the Canadian TSB reported the crew of C-FKCK asked ATC to confirm landing clearance as they were seeing lights when the aircraft was 0.6nm before the runway threshold. The controller was coordinating with another facility when a flight crew of another airliner taxiing on taxiway C queried ATC where AC-759 was going and stated it appeared the aircraft was lined up with taxiway C. AC-759 had already overflown taxiway C by about 0.25nm when ATC instructed the aircraft to go around. 4 aircraft were on taxiway C at the time of the occurrence. It is estimated that AC-759 overflew the first two aircraft by 100 feet, the third by about 200 feet and the last by 300 feet. The closest lateral proximity between AC-759 and one of the aircraft on taxiway C was 29 feet. The NTSB is investigating the occurrence.

Air Transat to become first North American Airbus A321LR operator
Ten Airbus A321LR aircraft will be joining the fleet of Canadian airline Air Transat, making it the first North American operator of the longest-range single-aisle aircraft in the world. Air Transat will lease the aircraft through a deal with AerCap, and plans entry into service starting in 2019.
The A321LR builds on the success of the A321neo, which has captured over 80 percent of the market share with more than 1,400 orders to date. The LR option extends the aircraft’s range to up to 4,000 nautical miles and brings with it a 30-percent reduction in operating cost compared to its nearest competitor.
“This is an ideal aircraft for the North American market, and particularly for a carrier like Air Transat,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer-Customers. “It gives operators a highly efficient and affordable modern option for their transatlantic routes, and we look forward to other North American carriers following Air Transat’s example.”
The A321LR enables airlines to access new long-haul markets that were previously inaccessible with current single-aisle aircraft. With 206 passengers in a typical two-class layout, the A321LR offers the possibility for each passenger to carry up to three bags.
The A320neo family incorporates the very latest technologies, including new-generation engines and Sharklets, which together deliver at least 15 percent fuel savings at delivery and 20 percent by 2020, as well as a 50-percent noise reduction. With more than 5,100 orders received from over 90 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo family has captured some 60 percent share of the market.

The A320neo Family incorporates the very latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklets, which together deliver at least 15 percent fuel savings at delivery and 20 percent by 2020 as well as 50 percent noise reduction.
