IAG airline group announces Airbus orders 

INTERNATIONAL Airlines Group (IAG), parent of British Airways and Iberia, has announced firm orders and options for up to 220 Airbus A320 family shorthaul aircraft.

The London-based company said up to 120 of the orders were for Spanish subsidiary airline Vueling, enabling it to "replace some of its existing A320 fleet and expand its business".

The Vueling agreement is made up of 62 firm orders -- 30 A320ceo and 32 A320neo -- to be delivered between 2015 and 2020, and 58 options.

IAG has also secured 100 options for the A320neo, the family's latest model, which could be used by British Airways, Iberia or Vueling.

"Vueling has managed to successfully expand its business profitably by targeting both growth markets and those areas where weak competitors are reducing capacity," explained IAG chief executive, Willie Walsh.

IAG said it had negotiated "a very substantial discount" from the list prices, which are $US81.8 million ($A90.31 million) for the A320ceo and $US92.0 million for the A320neo.

Its shareholders will need to approve the firm orders at a meeting later this year.

UPS Flight 1354 accident in Birmingham – Alabama USA

Airbus regrets to confirm that an A300-600F operated by UPS was involved in an accident shortly after 09.50hrs (UTC), at Birmingham, Alabama today. The aircraft was operating a scheduled service, Flight 1354, from Louisville, KY to Birmingham AL.

The aircraft involved in the accident, registered under the number N155UP (and with ‘manufacturer serial number’ MSN841), was delivered to UPS from the production line in 2003. The aircraft had accumulated approximately 11,000 flight hours in some 6,800 flights. It was powered by Pratt & Whitney engines. At this time no further factual information is available.

In line with the ICAO Annex 13 international convention, Airbus will provide full technical assistance to the French BEA as well as to the authorities who will be responsible for the accident investigation. A team of specialists from Airbus is being dispatched to Alabama.

The A300-600F is a twin-engined widebody freighter aircraft. The first A300-600F entered service in 1994. At the end of June 2013, 104 A300-600Fs were in service.
Airbus will make further factual information available as soon as the details have been confirmed. However, the investigation remains the entire responsibility of the relevant authorities and it would be inappropriate to speculate into the cause of the accident.

The concerns and sympathies of the Airbus employees go out to the families, friends and loved ones affected by the accident of Flight 1354.

Incident: Easyjet A320 at Milan on Aug 12th 2013, engine doors torn off

An Easyjet Airbus A320-200, registration G-EZTC performing flight U2-2715 from Milan Malpensa (Italy) to Lisbon (Portugal) with 174 people on board, was in the initial climb out of Malpensa's runway 35R when the left hand engine's (CFM56) doors opened and were subsequently torn off the engine. The crew stopped the climb at about 3500 feet and returned to runway 35L for a safe landing about 10 minutes later.

Italy's ANSV have opened an investigation into the occurrence rated a serious incident reporting that debris off the engine doors also caused damage to the aft fuselage and tailplane.

Crash: UPS A306 at Birmingham on Aug 14th 2013, contacted trees and touched down outside airport

A UPS Airbus A300-600, registration N155UP performing freight flight 5X-1354 from Louisville,KY to Birmingham,AL (USA) with 2 crew, was on approach to Birmingham's runway 18 at 04:51L (09:51Z) but touched down near the intersection Airport Road/Tarrant Huffman Road about 0.8nm short of the runway in open terrain, burst into flames leaving a trail of debris of about quarter of a nautical mile and coming to a stop about 0.55nm before the runway threshold and slightly left of the extended center line. Both crew were killed. The area has been cordoned off. No people on the ground or houses on the ground were affected.

Local police reported a large cargo aircraft crashed just outside the airport and said - following the Mayor's announcement of both crew having died - that both crew are still unaccounted for.

The FAA confirmed a UPS cargo aircraft crashed at Birmingham Airport. The FAA later declined comments on the condition of the crew (following Birmingham City Mayor's announcements the crew had perished in the crash), but in the afternoon (local time) confirmed both flight crew were fatally injured in the crash.

Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport reported a UPS Cargo Airbus A300 went down just outside the airport perimeter fence, so far there is no word on the fate of the crew and damage to the aircraft (repeated after the City Mayor made his announcements).

The Mayor of Birmingham said, that both crew perished in the crash.

UPS confirmed on Twitter one of their aircraft was involved in an incident at Birmingham,AL Airport. The airline has no verified information on the condition of their crew.

Airbus confirmed N155UP suffered an accident shortly after 09:50Z while on approach to Birmingham,AL arriving as flight 5X-1354 from Louisville,KY. The aircraft was produced in 2003 and had accumulated roughly 11,000 flight hours in 6,800 flight cycles. A team of Airbus specialists have been dispatched to Alabama to join the investigation by the NTSB, members of the French BEA are also going to join the investigation.

The NTSB have dispatched a go-team of 26 investigators to Birmingham,AL. An on site press conference has been scheduled at 16:00L (21:00Z).

In their first press conference on Aug 14th 2013 the NTSB reported the A300-600F N155UP flight 5X-1354 crashed while on approach to runway 18 of Birmingham. There were three impact points prior to the final position of the wreckage over a distance of about 200 yards (200 meters). It appears the aircraft contacted a number of trees on the top of the hill prior to the first point of impact on the ground. The overwing section was extensively damaged by fire, the tail section was still smouldering preventing the black boxes to be recovered, the NTSB is optimistic to recover the boxes the next day. The investigation will "begin in earnest tomorrow morning". Initial information, subject to verification, suggests the crew did not issue a distress call.

Philippine Airlines takes delivery of first A321

Carrier adds capacity with comfort on largest model of A320 Family
Philippine Airlines (PAL) has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321. The aircraft was handed over at the Airbus delivery centre in Hamburg, Germany yesterday and is the first of 64 new Airbus aircraft ordered by the airline in 2012 under a major fleet modernisation programme. These include 44 single aisle A321s and 20 widebody A330s.
Philippine Airlines has specified a two class layout for its A321s, with 12 seats in Business Class and 187 in Economy. The airline will operate its new A321s primarily on international routes across the Asian region, as well as on selected domestic flights.
“We are excited about the A321 not only because its size fit our expansion plans, but the flexibility it gives us in matching the aircraft to specific route requirements is tremendous,” said Ramon Ang, President and CEO, Philippine Airlines. “With the A321 we will be able to add capacity without compromising comfort, offering our passengers a choice between full premium class and a great range of value fares.”
“The addition of the A321 to the PAL fleet reflects a general move towards larger aircraft types in all the various size categories – including the single aisle market,” said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers, Airbus. “With the A321 PAL will benefit from the additional seat count and unbeatable operating costs offered by the aircraft, while offering its passengers a great in-flight experience. We are sure that the A321 will be a winner for the airline, enabling it to compete even more effectively in the fast-growing Asian market.”
The A321 joins an Airbus fleet at Philippine Airlines that already includes 22 A320 Family aircraft flying on domestic and regional routes, as well as nine in service with its budget subsidiary PAL Express. The carrier also operates eight widebody A330s on higher capacity routes across Asia and seven A340-300s on its longest services to the United States.  
Following the introduction of the A321, Philippine Airlines will take delivery of the first of its 20 new A330s in the third quarter of the year. The carrier is also currently adding four A340-300s to its fleet for deployment on new non-stop services to Europe, scheduled to begin next month.
The A321 is the largest member of the best-selling single aisle A320 Family which has the lowest seat mile costs of any single aisle aircraft. As with other members of the A320 Family, the aircraft offers a wider cabin than competing single aisle products, enabling wider seats, a wider aisle and more personal space.
To date, more than 9,800 aircraft from the Family have been ordered and over 5,600 delivered to more than 385 customers and operators worldwide.

The month in review
A busy month for orders and deliveries brought Airbus’ backlog to new industry record once again, with 174 jetliner bookings in July and 52 aircraft provided to international customers.  It included the addition of two more airlines for A320 Family NEO (new engine option) versions, while another carrier joined the list of A350 XWB customers.
New business during the month was led by easyJet’s purchase confirmation for 135 A320 Family aircraft, composed of 100 A320neo and 35 A320ceo (current engine option) jetliners.   easyJet already is the largest A320 Family customer and operator in Europe, operating one of region’s most extensive route networks that also positions it as the United Kingdom’s largest airline.  It becomes a new customer for the NEO.
Orders for Airbus’ single-aisle product line in July also included two bookings from key leasing company customers: 15 A321ceo aircraft from International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC); and CIT’s contract for five A321ceo and three A319ceo.  
Also added to the order book were three A320neo and three A320ceo jetliners for Syphax Airlines, a new Tunisian airline that becomes the first African-based carrier ordering the NEO; and Nepal Airlines Corporation’s firm booking for two A320ceo aircraft equipped with Sharklet fuel-saving wingtip devices.  Completing the July single-aisle sales was an ACJ320 corporate jet order from an unnamed customer.
The widebody product line registered two bookings in July: SriLankan Airlines’ agreement for four A350-900s, becoming a new A350 XWB customer; and three A330-300s for Turkish Airlines, continuing the sales success for this popular twin-engine jetliner.
With the latest business transactions, and taking cancellations into account, Airbus has registered a total of 892 net orders in the first seven months of 2013.
July’s deliveries totaled 52 aircraft, involving 42 A320 Family jetliners 9 A330s and one A380.  Among them were the first of 12 A380s for British Airways, making it the 10th carrier to receive the 21st century flagship jetliner; American Airlines’ initial Airbus single-aisle aircraft, which also was the first A319 delivered with Sharklets; and an A330-300 to Cathay Pacific, marking the 1,000th A330-series jetliner provided to the global base of operators and customers.
The month’s activity brings total Airbus deliveries in 2013 to 347, with these aircraft provided to 79 customers during the January-July timeframe.
As a result of the July orders and deliveries, Airbus once again surpassed the industry backlog record, with 5,227 aircraft to be delivered as of July 31.

Airbus delivers 8,000th aircraft – an A320 for AirAsia

Over 10 billion passengers have flown on Airbus fuel efficient aircraft
Airbus has delivered its 8,000th aircraft – an A320 for the Indonesian wing of AirAsia. The aircraft took off from Toulouse, France on Saturday 3rd August and arrived earlier today at its new base in Jakarta.
The delivery of the 8,000th Airbus aircraft highlights the manufacturer’s position as leader in the civil aircraft market, delivering airlines the most advanced, fuel efficient family of aircraft available today. The product line is also the most comprehensive ever offered by an aircraft manufacturer, covering every segment of the market from 100 to over 500 seats.

AirAsia Group is the largest low-cost airline in Asia and operates an all-Airbus fleet. Meanwhile, Airbus widebody aircraft are the choice of the group’s long haul affiliate AirAsiaX, which has ordered a total of 26 A330-300s and ten A350 XWBs. A total of 141 Airbus aircraft are flying today in AirAsia’s colours out of its 16 bases in the region, which include Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta.
The Airbus product line comprises the best-selling A320 Family in the single aisle market, the popular A330 and all-new A350 XWB in the mid-size widebody category and the flagship A380 in the very large aircraft segment. In the freight market Airbus currently offers the new-build A330-200F and the A330 Passenger-to-Freighter (A330P2F) programme.
