Alafco Boosts Airbus A320neo Order To 50

Kuwaiti lessor Alafco placed a USD$4.6 billion expanded order for 50 Airbus A320neo passenger jets at the Dubai Air Show on Monday.
The order supersedes a provisional order for 30 aircraft announced at the Paris Air Show in June.
Airwise reported last week that Alafco was expected to expand its order for A320neos, a revamped version of Airbus's best-selling narrow-body which competes with the Boeing 737.
Alafco Chairman Ahmad Al Zabin said he was not greatly concerned about economic turmoil in Europe derailing long-term aircraft demand especially in the Middle East.
"We are talking long term, what is happening now is short term," he told a news conference.

Gulf Airline Expansion To Continue

Gulf airlines and lessors could splash out more than USD$20 billion on Airbus and Boeing jets at next week's Dubai air show, underscoring the region's role as the industry's chief paymaster amid Europe's worsening sovereign debt crisis.
Emirates is in talks for a hefty order of at least 30 and possibly as many as 50 Boeing 777 long-range aircraft worth USD$8.5 billion to USD$14.5 billion and Qatar Airways is expected to place a USD$6.5 billion order for 50 fuel-saving A320neo jets and five A380s from Airbus, industry sources said.
The last air show two years ago was muted by Dubai's own crisis, but the city state is recovering after a bailout from Abu Dhabi. Burned by its reliance on property and the financial sector, Dubai is now focusing on becoming a transport and logistics hub.
"We absolutely expect the Gulf airlines to continue on the expansion trail -- they are very into having a young fleet and are determined to be superconnectors who try and hoover up traffic flows on a global basis," said Stephen Furlong, transport analyst at Davy Research in Dublin.
"While in other parts of the world you have things like the EU emission scheme and night-time flying bans, in the Gulf, the governments and the airlines are joined at the hip -- the governments are totally in line with the growth plans."
Orders are likely to include dozens of new sales for Airbus's revamped A320neo short-haul jet, which has enabled the European plane maker to pass Boeing in the order race this year.
But Airbus will also be under pressure to explain delays in the A350 passenger jet directly to Gulf customers whose support is crucial for Europe's answer to Boeing's carbon-composite 787 Dreamliner to succeed.
Chief among those is Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker who regularly blasts Airbus and Boeing over design decisions and delays and has abruptly cancelled air show deals.
EUROZONE THREAT?
Emirates and Qatar Airways have some 370 planes on order to be delivered over the next few years but the eurozone debt crisis could mean some orders being cancelled or put on hold.
Financing is increasingly an issue as the industry's traditional backers -- European lenders and particularly French banks -- have become more risk averse and are shying away from new deals. Emirates CEO Tim Clark told reporters recently the airline was looking at the Islamic finance market to fund aircraft deliveries.
That said, the shakeout in Europe may bring advantages of cost for Gulf carriers.
Daniel Broby at Silk Invest said Gulf airlines could snap up bargain deals as the world waits for Europe to resolve its debt crisis and ease doubts over growth.
"The advantage of buying at the air show at this stage in the cycle is that they are bound to secure good prices, because there will be little demand from Europe or the United States."
Airlines placed around USD$14 billion in orders at the last biennial show in 2009, sharply down from USD$155 billion in 2007.

Airbus Lead Widens As A320Neo Sales Hit 1,000

Sales of Airbus' revamped A320neo topped 1,000 as the European plane maker extended its lead over Boeing in the annual tug-of-war for sales, figures showed on Tuesday.
Toulouse-based Airbus said it had won a total of 1,372 orders between January and October, more than three times the volume at the same stage last year and 2 1/2 times the 538 sales reported over the period by Boeing.
After taking into account cancellations, the plane makers booked net sales of 1,231 and 428 aircraft respectively.
The latest Airbus figures include a sale of 110 aircraft to Qantas, first announced in October, which included 78 A320neos worth USD$91.2 million each at list prices.
Boeing hopes to catch up soon with 600 provisional orders for its own revamped 737 MAX waiting to be finalised, but so far Airbus stands well ahead of its rival in the battle to win sales for fuel-efficient narrow-body jets boasting new engines.
Boeing announced key design details of the 737 MAX last week, including the crucial size of the fan for its engines.
Airbus triggered one of the hottest market contests for years by deciding to put new engines on its 150-seat A320 jet in a bid to fend off competition from Canada's Bombardier and set the pace for delivering fuel savings.
Boeing endorsed the strategy by agreeing to re-engine the 737 in July after exploring a more radical but costly redesign which analysts said most airlines were reluctant to wait for.
Both plane makers say their models make most economic sense.
The A320 and 737 are by far the best-selling models of each manufacturer and the backbone of most airline fleets.
The market for narrow-body planes is usually split roughly evenly between the two manufacturers.
Boeing is now considering whether to turn the tables on its rival in a market where it is stronger by upgrading the 777 wide-body jet with new engines and other modifications.
Boeing sold a total of 134 of the roughly 350-seat aircraft between January and the start of November, while it was Airbus that was forced to respond to the threat in this part of the market by beefing up engines on its competing A350-1000.
Airbus said it had delivered 418 aircraft between January and October. It is targeting 520-530 commercial deliveries for 2011.

Qatar Air To Make Announcement At Dubai Airshow

Qatar Airways will make a major announcement at the Dubai Airshow next week, Qatar's state news agency said on Tuesday, citing a spokesman for the company.
"Qatar Airways will have a formidable presence at the Dubai Airshow," a spokesman for the carrier told Qatar News Agency. The report did not elaborate on the expected announcement.
The carrier is understood to be in talks to double its order for Airbus A380 superjumbos to 10, and to award an engine contract for the planes to Engine Alliance, a joint venture between GE and Pratt & Whitney, which competes with Rolls-Rolls to power the world's largest airliner.
Qatar has also been negotiating to buy an estimated 50 narrow-body jets from Airbus.

Japan’s Peach Aviation takes delivery of its first A320

Osaka-based new low-cost carrier to start operation next spring

4 November 2011 Press Release

Peach Aviation, Japan’s first low-cost carrier, has taken delivery of its first A320 in Toulouse, France, through a leasing contract with GECAS last Friday. The Japanese carrier will lease 10 A320s.

Peach Aviation’s A320 aircraft seats 180 passengers in a single-class layout and is powered by CFM International engines.

“We are delighted to take delivery of our first brand-new Airbus A320”, Peach Aviation President Shinichi Inoue said during the ceremony. “With a complete new fleet of A320’s, we aim at establishing a new low-cost business model in Japan. The world’s standard single-aisle aircraft will enable us to offer attractive airfares in the competitive Japanese market”, he added.

“We are pleased to play a major role in the historical launch of Peach, the first Japan-based low-cost airline”, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers John Leahy said. “The A320 offers unmatched efficiency and reliability levels and is clearly the aircraft of choice for low-cost carriers around the world. This is the start of a long-term partnership, and we welcome Peach as our newest A320 operator.”

Peach Aviation was established by All Nippon Airways (ANA), First Eastern Investment Group (First Eastern) in Hong Kong and Innovation Network Corporation of Japan. The Osaka-based company will start operations from Kansai airport in March 2012, first on domestic routes, and then internationally across Asia.

As of today, more than 7,900 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been sold to more than 340 customers and operators worldwide, making it the world’s best selling commercial jetliner ever. With proven reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single-aisle aircraft. Uniquely, the A320 Family offers a containerized cargo system, which is compatible with the world wide standard wide-body system and facilitates quick turn-around times at airports.

Engine Trouble Forces Qantas A380 Diversion

An engine fault forced a Qantas Airways A380 bound for London to divert to Dubai on Friday, exactly a year since a mid-air engine blowout prompted the Australian airline to ground its entire fleet of A380 superjumbos for nearly a month.
The Airbus aircraft had an "oil quantity defect" in one engine which was switched off according to standard procedure, a Qantas spokeswoman in Sydney said, adding Qantas engineers would investigate the problem.
The plane, with 258 people on board, including English actor, comedian and writer Stephen Fry, landed safely in Dubai.
The airline said in a letter distributed to passengers and posted on Twitter by Fry that engineers would take a number of hours to conduct "mandatory inspections".
The airline added it was rebooking the passengers on alternative carriers.
"Qantas... have said they shut down the engine to check oil and that there was no explosion," a source familiar with events said.
Referring to the latest incident and the engine explosion a year ago Qantas spokeswoman Olivia Wirth said: "The two issues are completely unrelated. This is a one-off and we will look to get the aircraft back in the skies as soon as possible."
Qantas A380s are powered by four Rolls-Royce engines. The carrier has 10 A380s in service and is due to take delivery of two more by the year-end. It also has two more on order and deferred the delivery schedule for six others.
"Still stuck on Dubai tarmac. No one seems to know how long we'll be here. Should've landed in London at 6:20. That won't happen!" Fry told his 3.3 million followers on Twitter.
"Not a great week for Qantas," he added.
Airbus spokesman Sean Lee said in an email to reporters: "We are aware that an A380 operated by Qantas diverted to Dubai as a precautionary measure. We are working with the airline to look into this matter."
A Rolls-Royce spokesman said the company was aware of the incident and was working closely with Qantas to provide appropriate support and technical assistance.
A Qantas Airbus A380 aircraft suffered an engine explosion on November 4 last year, after it had taken off from Singapore for Sydney. It returned to Singapore and landed safely.
Qantas, which has one of the best safety records in the industry, blamed an oil fire for the blowout.
In last year's engine blowout, a turbine disc disintegrated and sent shards of metal through the aircraft's wing, severing systems and narrowly missing the cabin.
Investigations have pinpointed a suspected manufacturing fault in an oil pipe which could lead to oil leaks and ordered regular safety checks.
Rolls-Royce says it has solved the problem and replaced or upgraded engines.
Rolls engines power the A380 fleet of Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa and China Southern.
Qantas resumed A380 services on November 27 after engine inspections concluded the plane was safe to fly.
The latest incident follows a series of setbacks for Qantas, which is emerging from the grounding of its entire fleet over the weekend in a long-running and costly dispute.
The weekend shutdown stranded tens of thousands of passengers but succeeded in forcing the government and the nation's industrial tribunal to intervene and ban all further strikes at Qantas.
