Airbus Updates No.4422

Air Canada orders five Airbus A220-300s

Air Canada (AC, Montréal Trudeau) has exercised preexisting purchase options for five incremental A220-300s from Airbus Canada, increasing its total commitment for the type to 65 units.

The airline did not disclose a timeline for the deliveries of the five aircraft, although it recently said during an investor event that all firm-ordered A220s should be in service by 2028.

It is Air Canada's third order for the type - it initially committed to forty-five A220-300s in 2016, followed by a second order for 15 units in 2022. So far, thirty-four A220-300s have been delivered to Air Canada. Following the 2022 order, the carrier had a further 15 unconverted options for the A220s, leaving it with ten more remaining options.

The ch-aviation fleets module shows that the airline bases nearly all of its aircraft of the type out of Toronto Pearson, with two aircraft currently operating out of Montréal Trudeau. It recently said that as the A220 fleet grows, it will consider basing some out of Vancouver International to support its west coast hub.
