7,000th Airbus aircraft delivered – an A321 to US Airways

Airbus builds 1,000 eco-efficient aircraft in just under two years

12 December 2011 Press Release

Airbus delivered today its 7,000th aircraft, an A321, to US Airways – the airline that operates the largest fleet of Airbus aircraft in the world – from the Airbus facility in Hamburg, Germany. This milestone comes just two years after the delivery of Airbus’ 6,000th aircraft which underlines the continued vibrancy of the commercial aviation sector and the market’s clear vote for eco-efficient aircraft.

The 1,000th Airbus delivery was an A340-300 that went to Air France in 1993, nineteen years after the first Airbus aircraft was delivered – an A300B2 also to Air France, in 1974. The 2,000th delivery was six years later in 1999. It took half that time, just three years, to get to the 3,000th delivery in 2002 and three more years to reach 4,000 deliveries. The tempo went up another notch taking Airbus only two years to hand over its 5,000th aircraft, an A330-200 to Qantas in December 2007. The 6,000th Airbus was an A380 which was delivered to Emirates in January 2010.

“It’s particularly fitting that our 7,000th aircraft is an A321 going to US Airways. The airline not only operates the largest fleet of Airbus aircraft in the world; with over 220 A320 Family aircraft flying in US Airways colours today, they also operate the largest fleet of our best-selling, eco-efficient A320 Family,” said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO. “This milestone is a tribute to the hard work and commitment of Airbus teams around the world. We have improved efficiencies company-wide and this has enabled us to deliver record numbers of latest generation aircraft at continually increasing rates, with an environmental footprint ever decreasing.”

“Airbus has been a long-term strategic partner to US Airways. Today we celebrate a significant milestone in Airbus’ history,” said US Airways’ Chief Executive Officer, Douglas Parker. “It is an honor to be the recipient of their 7,000th delivery. On behalf of the 32,000 employees at US Airways, we applaud this tremendous accomplishment and look forward to a continued successful partnership.”

By the end of the year, US Airways will operate a fleet of 93 A319s, 72 A320s, 63 A321s and 16 A330s. The airline also has firm orders for an additional 58 A320 Family aircraft, eight A330 aircraft and 22 A350 XWBs on backlog.

Over 8,200 A320 Family aircraft have already been ordered and more than 4,900 delivered to more than 340 customers and operators worldwide reaffirming its position as the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality with the current A320, making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload at a given range.

Airbus Updates No.553

You have to have a giggle at all this sanctions stuff because from records going back years the Boeing 707 and 747 programmes were brought about with large funds from the US Government to develop military transport for the USAF but in the end the commercial aircraft were developed.

US Threatens Sanctions In Airbus Battle With EU

The United States on Friday rejected a European Union plan to eliminate subsidies provided to Airbus and said it would ask the WTO for permission to impose trade sanctions that could amount to between USD$7 billion and USD$10 billion annually.
The move marks a low point in the world's biggest trade dispute, largely centred on European aid for the Airbus A350 aircraft. But an end to the battle over aircraft subsides could be some time away and a negotiated settlement may still be the most likely outcome.
The EU has its own case against US support for Boeing and resolving that will be part of the final mix.
But US officials exploited a tactical advantage derived from the fact the WTO has already issued a final ruling in the US case against Airbus subsidies while the EU case against Boeing subsidies is still pending.
"The WTO clearly found that every single grant of launch aid to Airbus, for every single aircraft that company produced, was a WTO-inconsistent subsidy that caused unfair adverse effects to US industry and jobs," US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said in a statement.
"Our action today underscores what we have said all along - that the United States cannot accept anything less than an end to this subsidised financing," Kirk said, referring to European "launch aid" loans for Airbus.
The United States is still prepared to negotiate with the EU with the "goal of ending subsidised financing at the earliest possible date," Kirk added.
The transatlantic aircraft dispute is the world's largest trade fight, affecting more than 100,000 jobs in an aircraft market worth more than USD$2 trillion.
John Clancy, a spokesman for the European Commission in Brussels, called the US sanctions threat "premature and not in line with the appropriate sequence of events in WTO disputes. We will nevertheless review the requests carefully and consider the next steps."
Last week the EU presented a plan to comply with a WTO appellate body ruling against European government support for Airbus in a case brought by Washington in 2004.
A careful review of that document "appears to show that the EU has not withdrawn the subsidies in question and has, in fact, granted new subsidies to Airbus's development and production of large civil aircraft," Kirk's office said, in apparent reference to Airbus's A350 aircraft.
ILLEGAL SUBSIDIES
As a result, Washington is seeking consultations with the EU on the compliance plan and "also requesting authorisation from the WTO Dispute Settlement Body in Geneva to impose countermeasures annually in response to the EU's claim that it fully complied with the ruling in this case."
"The amount of the countermeasures would vary annually, but in a recent period would have been in the range of USD$7 billion - USD$10 billion. This step will preserve US rights, but any actual imposition of countermeasures would not occur until after further WTO proceedings," Kirk's office said.
Any US sanctions could spill outside the aerospace sector, bringing other EU industries into the dispute to put pressure on Airbus. But the WTO would have the final word on how much the United States could impose.
The WTO appellate body ruled this year that Airbus had received around USD$18 billion in illegal subsidies over many years to help develop a string of aircraft including the A300, A310, A320, A330, A340 and A380.
However, it did not examine European government support for Airbus's latest project, the A350, which was launched after the United States filed its WTO complaint in 2004 to compete with Boeing's 787 Dreamliner.
John Magnus, president of TRADEWINS, a trade law and policy consulting firm, said the United States was unlikely to actually impose sanctions in the dispute, although it would continue to threaten that step.
It's more likely the two sides will eventually negotiate a deal, although getting there will be "slow and dreadful" because the United States and the EU still sharply disagree over what WTO rules allow, despite the rulings, Magnus said.
Richard Aboulafia, an aviation analyst for the Teal Group, said the EU was unlikely to give up support for Airbus.
"It's really tough to get people to change their ways in this game. They simply find different means to achieve exactly the same ends... This is pretty much the only industrial policy the EU has ever done that works," Aboulafia said.
"EMPTY CLAIMS"
A spokesman for Airbus said the US call for sanctions was based on "empty claims" because the EU had taken sufficient steps to address illegal subsidies found by the WTO.
Still, Boeing cheered the US action, saying European governments cannot be in compliance with the WTO's ruling unless they stop "non-commercial launch aid" for the A350.
The EU cannot avoid the enforcement of the WTO ruling by allowing subsidies to pop up on similar products, just like a popular arcade game, Boeing's lead outside lawyer said.
"The WTO is aware of the Whac-A-Mole game and they say you don't play that here in Geneva," Robert Novick, partner at US law firm WilmerHale said.
Meanwhile, a WTO panel in the EU case against US support for Boeing ruled in March that the US aircraft manufacturer had received about USD$5 billion in WTO-illegal subsidies.
Both sides appealed the ruling and a final decision in that case is expected next year.
Assuming the EU prevails on its claims, the United States would have to present its plan for complying with the ruling.
If not satisfied, Brussels could also begin proceedings to impose retaliation. However, US officials contend their victory dwarfs the EU win against Boeing support.

Airbus Updates No.551

The month in review: November 2011

Airbus maintained its sales and delivery pace in November, booking 149 orders for its A320, A330 and A380 jetliner families, while delivering 59 aircraft from these three product lines.

The A320neo new engine option for Airbus’ best-selling A320 Family once again led the month’s new business, with orders coming from key customers in the Middle East, United States and Europe.

ALAFCO, the Kuwait-based international aviation lease and finance company, ordered 50 A320neo jetliners, stating that this fuel-efficient new version was an absolute “must have” for its portfolio.

Qatar Airways selected the A320neo as the reference aircraft for expansion of its short- to medium-haul fleet, ordering all three aircraft types offered in this latest version: 30 A320neos, 14 A321neos and six A319neos.

Additionally, Aviation Capital Group – the United States-based global aircraft leasing company – signed a purchase agreement for 30 A320neo aircraft, while Transaero became the A320neo’s first customer in Russia and CIS with its order for eight of the jetliners.

With these bookings, firm orders for the A320neo Family reached 1,196, ordered by a total of 21 customers.
In other new business for November, Qatar Airways became the latest Airbus customer to place a repeat order for the A380 – adding five of the 21st century flagship airliners to its five already on contract.   This brings total A380 orders to 243 from 18 customers.

Completing the month’s bookings were Hawaiian Airlines’ order for five more A330-200s – which will support the continued expansion of its network and replace the carrier’s current 767-300s; and BOC Aviation’s contract for an A330-300.

The sustained delivery cadence continued in November, with Airbus providing nearly two new aircraft per day.  Its deliveries were composed of 45 A320 Family jetliners, 11 A330s (including another of the new A330-200F freighters), and three A380s (one each to Korean Air, Emirates and Qantas).  As a result, Airbus delivered a total of 477 aircraft to 84 customers in 2011 through the end of November, compared to 461 during the same 11-month period last year.

With November’s new business and deliveries, Airbus’ total backlog stood at a new record of 4,453 – consisting of 3,348 A320 Family jetliners, 925 aircraft in the A330/A340/A350 XWB families, and 180 A380s.

First customer in Russia and CIS for eco-efficient A320neo

5 December 2011 Press Release

Transaero Airlines, Russia’s second largest airline, has signed a firm order for eight A320neo aircraft following a Memorandum of Understanding signed in August at the International Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2011 in Moscow. The A320neo (new engine option) is an efficiency improvement package offering up to 15 percent fuel savings on the A320 Family.

Transaero Airlines is planning to operate the aircraft on its extended medium-haul network of domestic and international routes as part of its expansion strategy and fleet renewal programme. The engine selection will be announced by the airline at a later date.

Olga Pleshakova, Transaero Airlines CEO, said, “This order for the A320neo confirms Transaero’s ambition to become the first operator of this aircraft type in Russia, the CIS and Eastern Europe. These newest aircraft will enable us to offer maximum comfort to our passengers, while their high fuel efficiency will help us make air transportation affordable for wider audience. “

“Transaero is an exceptionally forward looking and pioneering airline in Russia and we are delighted to play such a significant role in the company’s future strategy.” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “In a fiercely competitive market this is a great endorsement for our eco-efficient, passenger pleasing A320neo aircraft.”

Over 8,100 A320 Family aircraft have already been ordered and more than 4,800 delivered to more than 340 customers and operators worldwide reaffirming its position as the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality with the current A320, making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload at a given range.

The A320neo is a new engine option for the A320 Family entering into service from 2015 and incorporates latest generation engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel savings.

This reduction in fuel burn is equivalent to 1.4m litres of fuel – the consumption of 1,000 mid size cars.  This saves 3,600 metric tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year, the amount absorbed by 240,000 mature trees. The A320neo NOx emissions are 50% below CAEP/6 and this aircraft also has a considerably smaller noise footprint.

Airbus Sues Boeing Partner Over Winglet Patent

Airbus has sued Aviation Partners, challenging its patent on a fuel-saving device used on Boeing planes.
Airbus says Aviation Partners demands royalties on wing tip devices that are similar to its blended winglets.
"For decades, Airbus has been developing and marketing wing tip devices that reduce drag and improve aircraft performance for various Airbus aircraft," the company said in the lawsuit.

Airbus uses a wingtip device it calls "sharklets," which will appear on the upcoming A320neo, an update of its narrow-body aircraft that promises 15 percent savings.

Aviation Partners declined to comment on the lawsuit. According to its website, the company introduced blended winglets in 1992. It says they are now in use on several models, including more than 2,800 Boeing jets.
Aviation Partners says that on the Boeing 737, 757 and 767, blended winglets save fuel, reduce drag, and cut engine maintenance costs, airport noise and emissions.

Airbus asked the court to rule that its own wing tip devices do not infringe on the blended winglets made by Aviation Partners.

"API's threats are a significant hindrance to Airbus and, without an early resolution place Airbus at a competitive disadvantage," Airbus said.

A Boeing spokesman had no immediate comment on the case.

Sharklet-fitted Airbus A320 successfully completes first flight-test

Campaign to hunt down fuel-burn successfully underway
30 November 2011 Press Release
Airbus has completed the first flight of the ‘Sharklet’ wing-tip devices on the company’s A320 development aircraft (MSN 001). This milestone marks the start of the early flight-test campaign to capture data for fine-tuning the flight laws, as well as for certification and performance validation.
Sharklets are around 2.5 metres tall and will replace the aircraft’s current wingtip fence. Offered as an option on new-build aircraft, Sharklets have been specially designed for the Airbus A320 Family to reduce fuel burn by up to an additional 3.5 percent, corresponding to an annual CO2 reduction of around 700 tonnes per aircraft. This reduction is equivalent to the CO2 produced by around 200 cars annually. The wingtip devices will also enhance the aircraft’s performance.
“The hunt is underway for Airbus to take another bite out of airlines’ fuel bills and CO2 emissions,” says Airbus’ Chief Operating Officer Customers, John Leahy. “With this start of Sharklet flight-testing today, actions speak louder than words as we take another definitive step towards greener aviation.”

A standard fit on the A320neo Family, which on its first anniversary after launch has attracted almost 1,500 orders and commitments from 26 customers, the Sharklets will contribute together with the new engines to 15 percent in fuel savings.
Airbus forecasts the world’s single-aisle airliner fleet to double to more than 23,000 aircraft by 2030, with an average annual fleet growth of 3.4 percent. This expansion will require around 19,200 new single-aisle aircraft deliveries for replacement and growth. Thanks to Airbus’ continuous product improvement investments of around 250 million euros annually in its single-aisle aircraft portfolio alone, the A320 Family is well positioned to capture a leading portion of this market.
Airbus is the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer offering the most modern and efficient passenger aircraft families from 100 to over 500 seats. Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus is an EADS company.

Airbus Alleges US Interference In Boeing Lion Deal

Airbus accused the White House of derailing open competition by helping Boeing win a record aircraft deal in Indonesia as details emerged of a behind-the-scenes struggle over jobs and plane sales worth almost USD$22 billion.
The European plane maker's sales chief said lobbying over the deal on behalf of President Barack Obama had demonstrated double standards on free-market competition amid an ongoing row between Washington and Europe over aircraft subsidies.
"There's only one superpower in the world and I think we know it isn't France; it is probably represented by President Obama," John Leahy said at a market briefing in Washington on Thursday.
"When he starts making headlines that he is selling airplanes and how that wouldn't happen without his personal involvement, we are seeing economic distortion and we shouldn't be talking about free and open level playing fields for trade around the world if the US pulls stuff like that."
Last month, Obama showcased an order for 230 jets from Indonesian budget carrier Lion Air worth USD$21.7 billion at list prices, the largest commercial deal in Boeing's history.
That came months after Airbus pulled off a dramatic coup by landing its own largest order in volume terms for 260 aircraft from American Airlines, toppling an exclusive Boeing customer.
The move prompted Boeing to alter its strategy and match Airbus by refreshing its most-sold 737 model with new engines.
Attending the Lion Air signing ceremony during a nine-day Pacific tour in mid-November, Obama called the deal a "win-win" for US workers and Asian consumers and said his administration and the Ex-Im bank played a key role in facilitating the sale.
The White House said it would support 110,000 industrial US jobs, addressing a key issue in next year's elections.
Analysts say a deal between Lion Air and Airbus would have been a surprise since it has an all-Boeing fleet and Europe's jet maker has previously tried and failed to win its business.
But lifting the lid on secretive yet fruitless negotiations to invade Boeing's turf a second time, Leahy said Airbus might have won a deal if it had not been for political intervention.
"The CEO and owner of that airline, who has bought nothing but Boeing airplanes, actually came to see me in Toulouse twice to talk about buying the airplanes and in the end told me he had no choice," Leahy said.
"I am not sure what 'has no choice' means, but there seems to have been an awful lot of political interference and I think the White House is very proud of that, taking credit for it, saying it would not have happened without White House intervention. Well, that is probably true, but it doesn't really speak well for freedom of competition and free trade."
There was no immediate comment from the White House. A Boeing spokesman said it never commented on such negotiations.
News of the Lion Air deal angered Airbus, which thought it had pulled off another dramatic coup against Boeing, though analysts do not expect too many defections between rival camps.
A person with direct knowledge of the talks said Airbus had progressed as far as reaching a provisional deal known as a memorandum of understanding with Lion Air, which although non-binding, usually signals an end to the competition.
Lion Air declined comment, but denied bowing to pressure.
"I do not wish to comment on that issue, but all I can say is we did the purchase purely on a commercial basis and we have our independence in doing so," spokesman Edward Sirait said.
CUTTHROAT COMPETITION
Cutthroat competition and diplomatic pressure have defined aerospace for decades as aircraft makers chase business estimated to be worth trillions of dollars over 20 years, shoring up trade balances and protecting high-tech jobs.
Leaked cables published by Wikileaks described lobbying on both sides and selling is seen as a growing part of diplomacy.
As part of the US National Export Initiative, US officials have said that Cabinet officials and even Obama himself would take time to make a commercial sales pitch when travelling overseas in response to what they see as high-level advocacy from other countries such as Germany and France.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy regularly beats the drum for France-based Airbus, as did his predecessor Jacques Chirac, whom newspapers nicknamed the "travelling salesman of France."
Boeing and Airbus compete for aircraft sales worth about USD$80 billion annually, but the stakes have rarely been higher as airlines scramble for revamped short-haul jets to lock in fuel savings, leading to a series of blockbuster orders this year.
Each side also accuses the other of benefiting from unfair government subsidies. The European Union said on Thursday it had met a deadline for complying with a World Trade Organisation ruling against European government subsidies for Airbus and called on Boeing to rectify its own government aid.
Neither side in the world's largest trade dispute disclosed the steps taken by the EU, but some trade experts doubted they would succeed in putting an end to the long-running spat between Airbus and Boeing.

Airbus Says American To Reaffirm Plane Orders

Airbus's sales chief, John Leahy, said that American Airlines has been clear that it intends to confirm its plane contracts.

Leahy added that he expects the US carrier, which filed for Chapter 11 protection on Tuesday, to dump older, less efficient planes more quickly as it restructures.

"I think you'll see a faster renewal of their fleet," Leahy told a conference in New York.

This year, American placed a giant split order for 460 single-aisle jets worth up to USD$40 billion with Airbus and Boeing. Bankruptcy could endanger parts of the order that are not firm.

Leahy said he expects more airline orders, mentioning recent reports of a potential order that could be decided late this year or early next year by United Continental.

Leahy also said that he expects India's Kingfisher Airlines, a carrier that is looking to shore up its finances, will be able to sort out its problems.

Shares in Kingfisher have tumbled in recent weeks as the airline seeks to raise funds. The company saw its losses double in the September quarter on high fuel costs and price competition.

"Kingfisher is one of our good customers," Leahy said. He added that chairman Vijay Mallya was bringing in new management and understands the need to drop unprofitable routes.

"We have high hopes that he'll get things sorted out," Leahy said. "He needs to be more focused and he's now doing that."

Leahy added that there are no Kingfisher orders that were at risk in the production cycle.
